Grega Author-Workplace-Name: Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno, Faculty of Business and Economics, Czech Republic Title: Price stabilization as a factor of competitiveness of agriculture Abstract: Price fluctuations make agriculture a risky business. High price fluctuation of agricultural commodities may have through its income effect a very unfavourable impact on the economic situation of agricultural subjects. In finding corresponding instruments of agricultural policy to stabilize prices and incomes, it is necessary to distinguish between various types of price changes. However, important question for conception of adequate price policy is how to protect against high price fluctuations and not to restrain function of price as a signal about market situation. Application of partial equilibrium analysis to evaluate impact of price stabilization policies is an adequate method, especially if price changes in the market do not cause significant price fluctuation in other markets. Using this methodological approach is possible to prove that price stabilization brings for common net benefit consumers and producers. However in practical application some additional aspects must be taken into account if dealing with stabilization of agricultural products prices. The entrepreneurs started to build their activities on the base of market economy principles. The farmers started founding of specialized or universal-trading organizations aimed to sale of the agricultural production. The legal forms of the companies were cooperatives or companies incorporated. In practice, the subjects proved the reasonability of their existence not only on the side of agricultural production sale, but also on the side of purchasing inputs necessary for the agricultural production process. One of the best trading organizations is Agropork-družstvo in Brno, which is specialized in purchasing and sale of pigs, cows and recently poultry as well. Blažková Author-Workplace-Name: Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry, Faculty of Business and Economics, Brno, Czech Republic Title: Commodity chain and strengthening of the agro-food sector competitiveness Abstract: In the last decade, the character of agro-food chains functioning has changed significantly. Globalisation elements in the food processing and distribution are changing conditions in agro-food sector and influencing also agrarian markets. Due to higher food finalisation and market force of processing and distribution stages in the agribusiness commodity vertical, farm value share in the final food price has decreased. Increasing competition makes agribusiness firms look for possibilities to strengthen their competitiveness, which is increasingly determined by the ability to develop successful partnerships within commodity verticals, i.e. vertical integration, eventually co-ordination, enforces. In this study, potential benefits and risks of these forms of vertical interconnection are reviewed with respect on specific market and production characteristics of agro-food chains. The problem is presented on the example of the commodity chain of bakery and pasta production in the Czech Republic. At the end of the paper, main arguments for the interconnection of particular stages of this vertical are derived, especially between mills and bakeries. The paper is focused on PEST analysis and pays attention to individual factors. It emphasizes the necessity of adjustment of the Czech legislation to the EU conditions, fulfilment of its conditions, e.g. compulsory registration of vineyards. In the field of economics, it is necessary to pay attention to renovation of vineyards with the help of subsidies from the state budget because the industry contributes to keeping the cultural level of the region and the human resources on the territory. It can be also a source of the environmental pollution. The technology of vine processing follows the changes in viniculture, changes of growing-technology and of the structure of white and red varieties. In conditions of the Czech Republic, it means to gradually transfer to production of quality varieties of vines by gradual renovation, which has to be a priority. The winegrowing sector is the industry with the highest value added also in the Czech Republic, and its share in the total agricultural production in a region can reach a significant level. Škorpíková Author-Workplace-Name: Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry, Faculty of Business and Economics, Brno, Czech Republic Title: Factor conditions of the viniculture and wine sector in the EU member states, in the Czech Republic and in the selected candidate countries Abstract: The paper is a part of the solution of the research plan of the FBE MUAF in Brno, No. GAMSM 431100007, and it is focused on the analysis of factors influencing competitiveness of the wine-growing and viniculture. This paper is based on the hypothesis that the competitiveness of the viniculture and wine sector could be influenced, amongst other things, by specific national conditions as defined by "Porter's diamond". This essay deals with factor conditions like the total area of vineyards, the average per hectare yield of grapes, the total wine production and wine consumption including the foreign trade with this commodity. The comparison of the chosen national conditions is made within the EU member states and also within six candidate countries - Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. The basic types of analysed driving forces are the following: long-term growth rate of the industry, character of customers and how they use the product, product innovation, process innovation, marketing innovation, entry/exit of major firms, diffusion of proprietary knowledge, changes in cost and efficiency, buyer preferences for a differentiated product, regulatory influences and government policy changes, changing societal priorities and lifestyles, uncertainty and business risk, and globalisation. Factors identified in the above-mentioned areas are examined also owing to their period of influence, and the possible implications on actions and strategies of breweries are discussed. All analysed factors are important and significantly intensify competition fight among the existing firms in the industry. The level of concentration is low - 16% of businesses in the industry control 60% of market, but almost 30% of businesses in the industry have only 3% share in the market, growth of the industry is slow - about 5% annually, and barriers of exit from the industry are significant. Situation of the next four factors (level of fixed and storage costs, product differentiation and switching costs, size of capacity augmentation, diversity of competitors) is similar. Chmelíková Author-Workplace-Name: Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry, Brno, Czech Republic Title: Possibilities and limits for capital structure optimalising model design of Czech dairy industry Abstract: The aim of the paper is to approximate the conclusions of the Trade-off model for practical usage in Czech dairies. In the contribution, there is carried on a transformation of the basic Trade - off model formula with respect to the practical usage. Then there is proposed a method of the quantification of unique factors of the Trade -off model theory. In order to measure some of these factors, there is partially used the methodology, which was proposed by Prof. Edward Altman. According to this methodology, it is possible to quantify part of the capital structure influences. The measurement is then valid for all firms in the sector. Following the results of empirical study which is carried on in this paper, one of the factors' relationship is not constant in the Czech dairy sector. This limits the recommendation to use the common model for all of the firms in one sector. When making a financial decision, it is necessary, after quantification of the capital structure factors, to analyse individual ability of a firm to utilise foreign capital. Záboj Author-Workplace-Name: Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry Brno, Czech Republic Title: Choosing the distribution channel for meat products Abstract: In the paper, the author deals with the problem of choosing the distribution channel and offers the use of selected methods which should contribute to the final distribution process decision for the firm pursuing production and sale of meat and smoked goods. It is direct qualitative estimate approach, weighted factor summing approach and distribution cost approach. The last two methods try to quantify the decision criteria. In case of the weighted factor summing approach, the weights are assigned to each of the decision factors and at the same time each channel alternative is rated and the overall weighted factor score is computed which is the basis of setting up the scale of distribution variants. Distribution cost analysis made for specific situation proves higher effectiveness with distribution through the own retail selling unit than with sale by intermediary (concretely by 350,533 CZK). However, a single numerical result cannot be used as the only evaluating indicator but it is necessary to consider the other factors which would increase the objectivity of the final decision.
