It was also monitored whether the intensity of increased physical activity would influence the conception rate. The observations were performed in a herd of 243 cows, 80 of them Czech Pied cows (C) and 163 of themHolstein cows (H) during 4 years. The cows were housed together in a free cubicle housing system. The cows of H breed produced 3 790 kg and those of C breed 3 087 kg of milk on average during the first 100 days of lactation. The mean calving interval was 400 days, and the mean number of services per pregnancy was 2.1. The cows were fed a total mixed ration. This ration has a low energy content (NEL) and excessive content of crude protein according to the official evaluation used in theCzechRepublic. The intake of NEL ensured the production of 30.9 l of milk and the intake of crude protein in 45 l of milk in these cows. The cows of both breeds significantly differed in the length of postpartal anoestrus, which is probably related to the negative energetic balance of H cows. The effect of parity, year of calving, and season of calving on the length of postpartum anoestrus was not demonstrated as statistically significant. A comparison of the walking activity over the oestrus period in the individual breeds demonstrated that the cows of the Czech Pied breed exhibited significantly higher activity. The highest walking activity was observed in first-calvers of both breeds, and the lowest walking activity during oestrus was recorded in winter. The cows with higher walking activity had a higher conception rate than those with lower walking activity. The application of Ovopel induced the statistically significantly (P ≤ 0.01) higher weight of eggs per kg female body weight and the statistically significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher quality of eggs after 24 h incubation in comparison with the effects of hypophysation. No effect of the experiment on the weight or quality of obtained eggs was determined while the interaction between the experiment and the ovulation stimulator was statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05) with respect to the percentage of egg fertilization. Statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05) correlation was found between the percentage of egg fertilization and that of living embryos, the determined correlation coefficient being higher after the application of Ovopel than after the carp pituitary homogenate. B 1 1Institute of Ichthyobiology and Aquaculture, Polish Academy of Sciences, Gołysz, Poland Title: The application of [D-Tle6,ProNHEt9]mGnRH (Lecirelin) with the dopaminergic inhibitor metoclopramide to stimulate ovulation in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) Abstract: The results of reproduction were tested in females of the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822) after stimulation of ovulation with carp pituitary (4 mg/kg body weight) or with Lecirelin (15 μg/kg) and metoclopramide (10 mg/kg). After administering the synthetic substance eggs were obtained from all females while in the group treated with pituitary homogenate 7 out of 8 hypophysed females spawned. The applied spawning agent did not significantly influence the weight of eggs expressed in grams, but in the case of females treated with carp pituitary homogenate a significantly higher weight of eggs expressed as the percentage of body weight of fish was recorded. The applied stimulators of ovulation did not affect any trait reflecting the quality of eggs. Females used as an experimental material belonged to two categories in respect of body weight: lighter females with average body weight of 2.63 ± 0.36 kg and heavier females with average body weight of 3.91 ± 0.48 kg. It was proved that the weight of eggs expressed either in grams or as a percentage of a female's weight was significantly related to the body weight of a female (P ≤ 0.01 and P ≤ 0.05, respectively), as well as the percentage of fertilised eggs and the percentage of living embryos after 28 hours of incubation (P ≤ 0.05 and P ≤ 0.05, respectively). The interaction between the stimulator of ovulation and the female body weight was significant only for traits reflecting the weight of obtained eggs (P ≤ 0.05 and P ≤ 0.01). Mazurkiewicz Author-Workplace-Name: Department of Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture, August Cieszkowski Agricultural University of Poznań, Poland Title: Nutritive value of cereals in feeds for common carp Abstract: Four isonitrogenous (gross protein content 32%) and isoenergetic (gross energy content 4 080 kcal/kg) diets were prepared by extrusion to investigate the effects of different cereal grains (barley - diet A, wheat - diet B, triticale - diet C, rye - diet D) as carbohydrate compounds of extruded feeds for carp. The physical and chemical properties of the feeds were established. A 60-day growth test was performed in experimental ponds of 40 m2 area. Each diet was fed to three groups of fish (initial average weight 200 ± 10 g). The following rearing effectiveness indices were used in the final evaluation of the growth test: weight gain (WG, %), specific growth rate (SGR, %/d), food conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and protein retention (PR, %). Conclusions were based on statistical analysis using the Statistica 5.0 package. The results obtained in the growth test did not show any differences in the evaluated feeds regarding their usefulness in the nutrition of carp (there were no statistically significant differences in the values of fish rearing parameters, P ≤ 0.05). The recorded growth parameters of carp were as follows: WG: 308.48-324.0%; SGR: 2.81-2.92%/d; the feed conversion coefficients were: FCR: 1.43-1.50; PER: 1.75-1.83; PR: 29.54-31.72%. F 2 1Research Institute for Cattle Breeding, Ltd., Rapotín, Czech Republic Title: Carcass value of the progeny of tested beef bulls Abstract: In the study focused on the estimation of the efficiency of beef cattle in the conditions of the Czech Republic, 361 half-carcasses of the offspring of crossbred bulls of tested young beef sires were dissected. The bulls were fattened together and slaughtered at the age of 500 ± 30 days. The tested breeds were Aberdeen Angus (AA), Blonde d'Aquitaine (BA), Belgian Blue (BB), Charolais (CH), Hereford (HE), Limousine (LI), and Piemontese (PI). The control groups were bulls of the Czech Pied (C) and Holstein (H) breeds. The best commercial class according to the SEUROP system was found in the offspring of Charolais sires (3.17). The fat content was the highest in the BB group (2.45) and the lowest (P < 0.01) in the PI group (1.50). The average hot carcass weight was 332.54 kg and was significantly (P < 0.05) the lowest in bulls of the HE group (290.50 kg). After dissection the dressing percentage of meat, bone, separable fat, and the meat/bone ratio were calculated. The average meat percentage in the carcass was 78.47%. The dressing percentage of meat of PI group was 80.33% and was the highest of all the groups (P < 0.01). H group showed the highest proportion of bones (19.79%), which was by 2% higher than in PI group. The content of separable fat ranged between 1.29 and 3.68%.
