The ewes were inseminated with diluted fresh semen after gestagen removal, and mated thereafter; 26 of them conceived at the fixed-time AI (fix AI; conception rate is calculated from lambing dates). Ovarian function was monitored by milk progesterone (P4) profiles. Before synchronization, the ovary was still acyclic in 33 and already cyclic in 72 ewes. Twenty-nine and 43 of the cyclic animals were in the follicular and luteal phases, respectively. After gestagen removal almost all (n = 104) ewes ovulated, although at AI elevated P4 levels related to the presence of partially luteinized follicles, and short-lived CL-s were observed in 10 and five animals (none of them re-conceived at the fixed time AI). Cycling ewes showed higher insulin and IGF-I levels than the acyclic animals, and those who had not conceived had higher PUN than the pregnant ones. The other metabolic parameters did not differ. Neither conception rate, nor the ovarian response was influenced by the pre-treatment. Abstract: In cattle referred to the Clinic of Ruminants at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna by local veterinarians from Lower Austria, the number of animals positive for antibodies against pestiviruses decreased from 11.9% in 2004 to 7.4% in 2007. In other Austrian regions the seroprevalence of 17.6% in 2004 dropped to 12.2% in 2007. The seroprevalence rates were considerably higher in older animals than in younger indicating a marked decrease of new infections (8.2% in < 1.5 years old animals, 6.8% in 1.5-4.5 years, 19.8% in 4.5-7.5 years and 33.3% in > 7.5 years). These data nevertheless also demonstrate that new pestivirus infections occur, although at a lower rate. We report the case of a calf persistently infected with Border disease virus-3 (BDV-3) detected in a mixed cattle and sheep farm with the status "BVDV-free". Earlier investigations have shown that BDV-3 is endemic in Austrian sheep populations and seems to be a potential risk factor for the reintroduction of pestiviruses in BVDV free cattle herds. Serological findings among the investigated sheep population showed in four out of nine sheep samples considerably higher titres to the BDV strain Moredun than to the BVDV strain NADL. Seroconversion against pestiviruses was also detected in contact cattle and the mother of the persistently infected calf. Pestivirus specific RNA was neither detected in the blood samples collected from the patients of the Clinic for Ruminants nor in the sheep or cattle investigated on the farm described. One gram of the preparation contains: 4.7 × 107 of LAB (Lactobacillus casei/paracasei LOCK 0920, L. brevis LOCK 0944, L. plantarum LOCK 0945), 2.0 × 103 of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae LOCK 0140) and a 50 mg of extract from Yucca Schidigera. The experiment was conducted on 99 female broilers divided into three groups consisting of 33 chickens, kept separately. A wheat- and soybean meal-based diet was divided into three parts: A (containing 1 g/kg of probiotic for starter and grower diets and 0.5g/kg for finisher diet), B (containing 14 mg/kg of flavomycin), and C (unsupplemented). The diets were fed from Day 1 to Day 41 of life. Final BW was on average 2.4 kg in all groups, FCR was 1.63 kg feed/kg BWG, neither BWG nor FCR nor mass of the liver, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract were significantly influenced by supplementing the diet with either additive. Special attention should be drawn to the fact that supplementing feeds with a probiotic preparation already after one week of breeding considerably decreased the number of Clostridium bacteria in broilers' faeces. Nevertheless, it should be emphasized that in this study the excreta of chickens fed with the feed mixed with a probiotic contained the lowest changeability of the number bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family and bacteria belonging to coli groups in individual weeks of breeding. It may be concluded that the studied probiotic can be considered as a substitute for antibiotic growth promoters in broiler diets. Thirty-one adult ferrets (Mustela putorrius furo) were divided into five groups. The levels of serum 17beta-estradiol differed significantly when comparing females with ovarian tumors (817.80 ± 433.90 pmol/l) to intact (83.50 ± 32.53 pmol/l) and spayed, healthy females (73.17 ± 0.41 pmol/l) as well as to females with prolonged estrus (274.75 ± 192.40 pmol/l). Concentrations of serum progesterone differed significantly when comparing females with ovarian tumours (2.10 ± 1.85 ng/ml) to intact (0.40 ± 0.40 ng/ml) and spayed, healthy females (0.30 ± 0.12 ng/ml). Our study has made it clear that a determination of serum concentrations of 17-beta estradiol and progesterone is not sufficient for distinguishing between prolonged estrus and the presence of ovarian tumours. Therefore, it is advisable to employ other clinical procedures, such as ones allowing organ visualization. Increased concentrations of 17beta-estradiol in ferrets persisted for two weeks after hCG administration. This is particularly important in clinical practice, as negative effects of estrogens on bone marrow could persist for more than 14 days. Therefore, ferrets should be clinically monitored for a longer period of time. Five ground squirrels were used as subjects. Coloured latex was injected from the left ventriculi of the hearts of all the squirrels. When the vertebral arteries of two of the animals were ligatured, it was found that there was no internal carotid artery. After careful dissection, the circulus arteriosus cerebri (the circle of Willis) was investigated. The right and left vertebral arteries gave rise to the caudal cerebellar artery before forming the basilar artery. The basilar artery formed the caudal communicans artery that was the caudal part of the circulus arteriosus cerebri on the pontocrural groove (sulcus pontocruralis). The caudal, medial, rostral cerebellar, the common root formed by the caudal cerebral and choroid arteries, the rostral choroid, the rostral and medial cerebral arteries arose from the vertebral, basilar and caudal communicans arteries and dispersed to the cerebrum and cerebellum from caudal to cranial. The termination and the branches of the rostral cerebral artery in ground squirrels varied. It was observed that the internal carotid artery does not supply the circulus arteriosus cerebri in ground squirrels. It was initially discovered in the Teschen district of North-Eastern Moravia. During the 1940s and 1950s it caused serious losses to the pig production industry in Europe. The most critical situation at that time, however, was in the former Czechoslovakia. A nationally organized eradication programme started in 1952. That year the reported number of new cases of Teschen disease reached 137 396, i.e., an incidence rate of 2 794 per 100 000 pigs, in 14 801 villages with 65 597 affected farms, i.e., 4.43 affected farms per village and 2.10 diseased pigs per affected farm. The average territorial density of new cases was 1.07 per km2. For etiological diagnosis histological investigation of the central nervous system, isolation of virus and seroneutralization were used. Preventive measures consisted in feeding pigs with sterilized waste food and in ring vaccination. Eradication measures took the form of the timely detection and reporting of new cases, isolating outbreak areas, and the slaughter of intrafocal pigs followed by sanitation measures. Diseased pigs were usually destroyed in rendering facilities. The carcasses of other intrafocal pigs were treated as conditionally comestible, i.e., only after sterilization. During the years 1952-1965 from a reported 537 480 specifically diseased pigs 36 558 died; i.e., Teschen disease mortality rate was 6.80% while other intrafocal pigs (88.12%) were urgently slaughtered. During the whole eradication programme there were a reported 542 971 Teschen disease cases. The disease was found mainly in small private farms where domestic refuse was used for pig feeding without proper sterilization. During 1959-1972 there were a reported 16 981 529 vaccinations using a vaccine of national origin. The ratio of vaccination to national pig population was reduced from 0.4904 in 1959 to 0.0786 in 1972. During 1959-1965 the ratio of reported vaccinations to reported new diseased pigs was 521 : 1 and during 1960-1965 the ratio of reported vaccinations to reported intrafocal pigs was 85 : 1. After eradication the vaccination was stopped. The last cases were detected in 1973 and from that time Czech and Slovak territories have been free from this dangerous infection.
