The present study was aimed at determining the prevalence of Theileria equi in the equids of this province. A total of 165 blood samples from healthy Persian Arab horses from twenty four stables were examined for the presence of T. equi infection using molecular methods. For detection of T. equi, primers targeting the 18SrRNA gene were selected. The PCR method gave 47 (28.5%) positive results. Age (P = 0.68), sex (P = 0.88), contact with cattle (P = 0.26) and type of activity (P = 0.06) were not determined as risk factors for T. equi infection in this study. However, there was a significant geographical variation in the prevalence of T. equi infection ranging from 8.3% (2/24) in Shushtar to 55.6% (10/18) in Ramhormoz (CI, 2.46-76.82) (P = 0.003). In conclusion, equine theileriosis has the potential of posing a significant problem for Iran's Persian Arab horse industry and should remain a major concern to the horse community and regulatory agencies. A total of 640 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chickens with an average initial body weight of 40.25 ± 0.5 g were randomly allotted to one of four treatments lasting four weeks with 10 replicates per treatment and 16 chicks per replicate pen. Dietary treatments consisted of: CON (basal diet); YGF0.05 (CON + 0.05% YGF251); YGF0.1 (CON + 0.10% YGF251); YGF0.15 (CON + 0.15% YGF251). There were no statistical differences in body weight (BW), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion rate (FCR) throughout the whole experiment. However, broiler chickens fed with YGF0.1 diets had greater body weight gains (BWG) than chickens fed CON diets during eight to 28 days and zero to 28 days although the means of pH value, breast meat colour, WHC, drip loss, the relative organ weights of liver, spleen, bursa of Fabricius and breast muscle were not affected by any dietary supplementation (P > 0.05). The relative weight of abdominal fat in the CON treatment group was significantly higher than the YGF0.05 and YGF0.1 treatments, although relative gizzard weight was lower with CON treatment compared to YGF0.1 treatment (P < 0.05). Femur length and weight were significantly higher in the YGF251-supplemented chicks than in chicks fed the control diet (P < 0.05). Broiler chickens fed the YGF0.1 diet had significantly higher blood IgG counts compared to chicks fed the CON and YGF0.05 diets (P < 0.05). Moreover, YGF251-supplemented chicks exhibited increased IGF-I concentrations compared to the CON to YGF0.1 treatment (P < 0.05). The results of this study indicate that supplementation with 0.1% YGF251 can increase body weight, IgG and energy digestibility and reduce relative abdominal fat and gizzard weight in broiler chickens, while at all concentrations tested YGF251-supplemented chicks showed higher results for femur length and weight and serum IGF-I concentrations compared to the control treatment in broiler chickens. China Title: Effects of Bai zhu san (Atractylodis macrocephalae) decoction on cellular immunity and Th1/Th2 cytokine ratio in a Mifepristone-induced murine abortion model Abstract: Chinese herbal medicine has been used as an anti-abortive treatment in farm animals for thousands of years. To investigate the anti-abortive functions and mechanisms of Bai zhu san (BZS) on mifepristone (RU-486)-induced abortion, pregnant mice were allocated to different groups as follows: control group receiving neither RU-486 nor BZS; mice receiving RU-486 only; mice treated with both RU-486 and BZS. The results showed that the concentrations of IL-10 and IL-4 in uterine lysates were significantly higher in mice of the BZS + RU-486 group compared with the mice of the RU-486 group. The IL-10 and IL-4 levels in serum were several folds higher than that in uterus lysates. The IFN-γ concentrations in uterine lysate decreased significantly in mice of the BZS + RU-486 group vs. the RU-486 group. There were no significant differences in IL-2 concentrations between the mice of BZS + RU-486 or RU-486 groups and controls in the uterus and serum. The numbers of CD4+, CD8+T lymphocytes or macrophages in the uterus decreased in the BZS + RU-486 group compared with the RU-486 group. These results indicate that the Chinese herbal formula Bai zhu san inhibits RU-486-induced abortion and modulates the Th1/Th2 cytokine balance at the maternal-foetal interface. Fish were exposed to butachlor at a concentration of 0.39 mg/l, for a period of 10 days. Haematologically, fish showed a significant decrease in erythrocyte count, haemoglobin, white blood cells and lymphocytes and a significant increase in neutrophils compared to controls (P < 0.05). Histopathological observations of prepared sections of the treatment group also revealed pathological lesions of varying severity in studied organs, including liver (hyperaemia and haemorrhage, bile duct hyperplasia, dilated sinuses, interstitial oedema, monocellular necrosis, nuclear degeneration and hypertrophy in hepatocytes), gills (hyperplasia and hyperplasia of lamellar epithelium, fusion of lamellae, rod-like structures of secondary gill lamellae, cystic-like lesions) and kidneys (vacuolar degeneration of tubular epithelium, desquamation of epithelium and necrosis of tubular epithelium). It is concluded that butachlor caused changes in certain haematological parameters and histopathologically, exerted destructive effects on the gills, liver and kidneys of rainbow trout. Fish were fed for nine weeks with a diet containing 0 (control), 0.5% (G1), 1% (G2) and 2% (G3 group) β-glucan. Subsequently, stress responses were studied by evaluating serum cortisol and glucose levels following a constant 24 h cold shock (from 28 °C to 15 °C). Serum cortisol and glucose concentrations were measured after cold treatments of varying durations (prior to, and after one, 12 and 24 h of cold shock stress, respectively). No differences in serum cortisol and glucose levels were found between control and β-glucan-treated fish. However, the mortality rate was significantly lowered in cold challenged fish fed appropriate doses of β-glucan (in G1 and G2 vs. G3 and control group). The results of the present study demonstrate that a proper administrationβ--glucan in the diet could ameliorate the detrimental effects of a severe stress resulting in a reduction in fish mortality. A two year old 530 kg Shire stallion underwent surgical removal of a granuloma in the ventral sternal region under general inhalation anaesthesia in dorsal recumbency. Total duration of the operation was 85 min. The anaesthesia was uneventful except for profuse sweating and arterial hypertension observed during the whole period. During recovery the horse was not able to stand, and flaccid paralysis of hind limbs, absence of reaction to an induced pain stimulus on the hind limbs and no patellar or anal reflex was recorded; in addition, tail tonus was weak. Panniculus reflex was absent distally from the 17th intercostal space. Head, neck and front limb movement was not affected. The horse did not respond to treatment by intravenous administration of dexamethasone, hypertonic or isotonic saline. The status deteriorated and the horse was euthanised 4 h after the end of anaesthesia. The main pathological findings were haemorrhage, oedema and malacia of L5-L6 spinal cord segments and cauda equina. Histological examination of the spinal cord revealed haemorrhage and areas of necrosis predominantly in the grey matter of L5 and L6 segments. Impairment of spinal cord perfusion due to haemodynamic changes associated with dorsal recumbency and general anaesthesia is presumed. Predisposition factors could include young age, dorsal recumbency and high weight. Two cutaneous angiokeratomas were diagnosed in a six-year-old spayed female Pekinese dog. Physical examination of the skin revealed two small erythematous papules on the axillary and abdominal regions. The masses were approximately 2-3 mm in diameter, well-circumscribed, purple to red in colour, and slightly elevated above the skin surface. The two small masses had similar histopathological features, characterised by exophytic proliferation of a mixture of multiple vascular channels resembling a cavernous haemangioma on the superficial dermis. The entire lesion was well circumscribed and the overlying epidermal hyperplasia formed a collarette. Ultrastructural analysis with transmission electron microscopy revealed electron-lucent lysosomal dilatation in the keratinocytes of the irregular hyperplastic epithelial trabeculae like rete pegs. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a grass awn foreign body in the vaginal fornix. Culture swabs obtained from the vagina revealed the presence of Staphylococcus epidermidis as the preponderant organism. Ovariohysterectomy was performed, and the presence of the grass awn was confirmed. A chronic-active vaginitis was found at histological examination. The dog recovered with resolution of all clinical signs. Differential diagnoses for acute vulvar discharge in bitches should include retention of vaginal foreign bodies. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of a grass awn foreign body in the vaginal fornix of a dog. Surgical removal with electrocautery and a cryogun was conducted because the owner wanted to maintain the fertility of the dogs. The dogs were followed up for 12 months. The surgical wounds were completely healed by five to six weeks. The dogs remained fertile without complications or recurrences.
