Sunflower downy mildew caused by Plasmopara halstedii (Farl.) Berl. et de Toni is a destructive and widespread disease. More than 50 races of P. halstedii have been recorded worldwide. In 2020, in the Russian Federation (Zernogradsky district, Rostov region), a globally new race 337 was identified for the first time. The pathogen was identified on the plants of a foreign sunflower hybrid bearing the resistance gene Pl6. According to the five-digit racial nomenclature, its virulence profile was determined as 337 53. It is the first P. halstedii race recorded in the Russian Federation that simultaneously infects all differential lines of the 3rd triplet, i.e., HA-R4, HA-R5 and HA-335. The sunflower lines RHA-274, 803-1, PSC8, RHA-419 and RHA-340 were resistant to it. All the collected isolates of the new race were susceptible to the fungicide mefenoxam.

An investigation of the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of myclobutanil fungicide on plantsOriginal Paper

Myclobutanil is a chemical pesticide commonly used in the production of some vegetables and fruits like greenhouse peppers, grapes, and apples. The aim of this study was to investigate the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of myclobutanil fungicide on the Allium cepa plant, the model organism. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA and inter simple sequence repeat-PCR techniques were performed on the DNA of A. cepa exposed to the different myclobutanil doses and time periods. The nucleus anomalies and abnormal anaphases were investigated using a light microscope. PCR analyses showed that myclobutanil causes some DNA sequence changes on the onion genome depending on the increase in the fungicide dose and exposure time. It was determined that myclobutanil has a serious genotoxic effect, even in low doses like 25-50 ppm.

Provenance affects the growth and mortality of teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) plantations cultivated in central NicaraguaOriginal Paper

Teak has been planted extensively by smallholders in Central America within reforestation programmes and has become one of the most valuable timbers. The five-year growth and mortality of teak cultivated in a plantation in central Nicaragua, representing sites at the low limit of teak ecological valence, were evaluated. From 2006 to 2010, 72 pure teak stands were established, with 48.93 ha in total. For afforestation, planting stock from five provenances was used and planted at 1 m × 1 m spacing to stimulate the height growth and reduce broad crowns formed by self-pruning. In the pure teak stands, 144 permanent sample plots of 0.01 ha in size were established in 2011. From 2011 until 2015, the tree height and stem girth of all individuals in the studied sample plots were measured, and mortality based on the stand density was assessed. Significant differences between the provenances were observed. The highest growth was noted in the Local provenance originated from the studied area, whereas the Semilla provenance from Costa Rica, characterised by the lowest growth ability, was characterized by lower radial increment and mean tree height with high mortality.

Evaluation of electrical resistance of electrodes with conductive ink for agriculture applications using computer technologyOriginal Paper

The article presents the ongoing research, which aims to select suitable electrodes and mixtures of conductive inks, which will be used as a converter between the pressure and electrical quantities in the design of planar pressure transducers. In the described research, we continue our previous work and the work of other authors who have previously dealt with the properties of conductive inks and electrodes. Due to the only partial results in the given field, we decided to perform an extensive and original measurement of a total of 172 combinations of different electrode sizes, various conductive ink mixtures and ink layer thicknesses. Thanks to this, it will be possible, in the future, to select a suitable combination of electrodes and inks when designing pressure sensors for industrial and agricultural applications without the need to perform time-consuming preparatory measurements. The aim of the measurements is also to determine the usable working range of the pressures and the corresponding sensitivity for certain combinations of electrodes and inks, and to also exclude those variants which are unsuitable for the given purposes. This paper presents the introductory part of the measurements, which aims to verify the methodology of the measurements on a test plate at robotised workspace that is connected to a PC in real time via the program LabView. The described introductory measurements proved our methodology to be suitable to the given purpose; however, there minor problems emerged with the actual working pressure range of the transducer and the consequential necessary adjustments of the control program.

Dynamics of occurrence of defective eggs in initial laying lines of hensOriginal Paper

The aim of this study was to monitor the occurrence of abnormal eggs in five initial laying lines of the domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus) between 2017 and 2021. The incidence of abnormal eggs, cracks, shell-less eggs, and double-yolk eggs were examined as part of the monitoring. Also assessed was the laying intensity, which ranged from 83.7% for the Barred Plymouth Rock (BPR) B line to 96.8% for the Rhode Island Red (RIR) A line. A statistically significant relationship between the line and control year was discovered for all varieties of abnormal eggs. The highest occurrence of cracks was in the RIR B line (2.2%). The BPR A line of hens had the highest concentration of shell-less eggs (1.7%), while the RIR A line, which also had the highest laying intensity (96.8%), had the highest frequency of double-yolk eggs (1.5%). A positive trend between the intensity and the occurrence of abnormal eggs was also confirmed. The BPR B (3.4%) and BPR C (3.0%) lines, which belonged to the lines with the lowest laying intensity, had the lowest percentage of abnormal eggs. For the BPR C line, cracks (1.2%), shell-less eggs (0.9%), and double-yolk eggs (0.9%) had the lowest occurrence rates. The correlation between laying intensity and double-yolk eggs reached 0.67, and a significant positive relationship was seen. On the other hand, no association was found between the laying intensity and the prevalence of cracked or shell-less eggs. There was also a strong correlation between abnormal eggs and double-yolk eggs (0.80) and between abnormal eggs and cracks (0.73). The correlation between the total occurrence of abnormal eggs and the intensity of laying reaches a mean value of 0.41. An increase in the intensity of laying from 80% to almost 100% leads to an increase in the occurrence of abnormal eggs from 2.6% to 6.3%.

Determining the technical and economic feasibility of combining pest control techniques in open field and netting house chili cultivation systemsShort Communication

As one of the most widely cultivated vegetable crops worldwide, chillies (Capsicum annuum L.) face serious pest-related problems when grown in either open or protected cultivation systems. However, studies aimed at understanding the implementation of various integrated pest management (IPM) techniques on chilli production in both cultivation systems are scarce. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of implementing an integrated approach that combines the use of a sweet corn barrier, thiamethoxam, control threshold, silver plastic mulch, pest traps, and fungicides on chilli pests and diseases in open and protected farming systems. Those techniques were applied simultaneously to overcome major chilli pests and diseases that commonly co-occur in the field. The experiment conducted in West Java, Indonesia from May to November 2021 revealed that control techniques could maintain chilli pest population below their control threshold and prevented disease outbreak in both cultivation systems. The average yields of chilli cultivated in the netting house were higher than those cultivated in the open field, i.e. 20.92 t/ha and 9.77 t/ha, respectively. Furthermore, the profitability of chilli cultivation using IPM technologies has been demonstrated in both open and protected fields, with the profit generated in the protected system being 3.9 times higher than that of the open field.

Changes in the behaviour of Czech Fleckvieh dairy cows during the day under optimal ambient temperature conditions in the barnOriginal Paper

In the experimental section of the barn (which made up 25% of the barn), 103 cubicles in free stall barn were selected in three rows, housing 98 dairy cows of Czech Fleckvieh cattle. Monitoring was done for one calendar year, once a week. From this period, 16 days with temperatures from 0.5–15.0 °C were selected for quantification. Observations were continuously recorded at 10:00 am (one hour after the coming of the last cow from the milking parlour), at hourly intervals until 7:00 pm. Ten observations were carried out every day of the monitoring period. In total, 15 680 individual observations were recorded. The microclimatic parameters (temperature, relative humidity) were monitored within the barns continuously at 15-minute intervals using three data logger sensors. Changes in the proportion of lying to standing dairy cows were observed during the day. A steady trend of a reduced ratio of lying dairy cows during the day (from 70% to 40%) in favour of standing dairy cows was observed. The optimal value of the cow comfort index – CCI (85%) was not reached in any monitored part of the day. The number of dairy cows lying on their left sides increased from 50.4% to 56%, especially after feeding (at 4:00 pm). Differences were found in the proportion of lying and standing cows (< 0.05) at an optimal microclimate during the day. A significant preference for the left side when lying down was also found.

The influence of photovoltaic and nuclear energy sources on the use of land in the Czech RepublicReview

The human population is highly dependent on electricity, and to maintain the current progress of its use and for future requirements, it is necessary to look for ways to ensure sufficient energy. The aim of the article is to compare nuclear energy as a representative of non-renewable energy sources with photovoltaic energy as a representative of renewable energy sources (RES). The comparison is made in terms of the effect on agricultural land occupation, given that soil as a basic production factor is completely unique and that nuclear energy sources are often used as a backup for RES. We used a quantitative research method based on deduction using available real data to compare agricultural land occupation by these two energy sources. The results indicate that the effect of photovoltaic power plants on agricultural land occupation is 100 times greater than that of nuclear power plants. In terms of the effect on agricultural land occupation, the combination of solar and nuclear power plants seems to be appropriate. This combination partially eliminates the negative agricultural land occupation consequence of using solar power plants.

Chemical, nutritional, and bioactive compositions of fresh, washed, and blanched shiitakeOriginal Paper

Washing and blanching are two important steps for the processing of fresh good grade small shiitake into casual snacks and prepared foods. This study explored their effects on the dimensions, weights, proximate compositions, taste and bioactive compounds of the shiitake caps and stipes. Results showed that the dimensions and weights of the caps and stipes increased after washing but decreased after blanching. On a dry basis, washing did not affect the nutrients and bioactive compounds contents of shiitake except sugars and polyols compared to fresh samples. However, blanching greatly reduced all the quality contents of the shiitake. The major minerals in the caps and stipes were potassium, magnesium and calcium. The main polyol, sugar, free amino acid, and 5'-nucleotide of shiitake were mannitol, trehalose, glutamine and 5'-adenosine monophosphate, respectively. Equivalent umami concentration (EUC) in the caps was three-fold higher than that in the stipes. Ergosterol, ergothioneine, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and total phenols contents in the caps were significantly higher than those of the stipes, but the polysaccharides showed the reversed. Overall, both caps and stipes contain the necessary nutrients and bioactive compounds, and the blanching significantly affected the above-mentioned components of all tested samples.

Combining the null Kunitz trypsin inhibitor and yellow mosaic disease resistance in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill)Original Paper

For the wide adoption of soybean varieties, it is desirable, that they are Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (Kti) free and resistant to yellow mosaic disease (YMD). The soybean variety SL525 with YMD resistance was crossed with the YMD susceptible variety NRC101 with a null kti allele. The F5 progeny derived from the cross was screened with two simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers (satt409 and satt322) linked with the null kti allele and the YMD resistance, respectively, and one null kti allele-specific marker. The presence of both desirable traits was further confirmed with the phenotypic data which showed good correlation with the genotypic data. The yield potential of fourteen such identified genotypes having both desirable traits was either at par or superior to SL525, hence, represent improved versions of SL 525.

Effect of protease supplementation on the digestibility of amino acids in animal-origin meals for broiler dietsOriginal Paper

Enzymes benefit digestion and absorption of the ingredients and their addition to an animal-origin meal (AOM) can improve its nutritional quality. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of protease on nutrient digestibility, amino acids, and metabolism of AOM energy for broilers. Four hundred and eighty broiler chickens were distributed in a completely randomized design (4 × 2 factorial scheme), eight treatments, six replicates containing 10 birds/replicate. Treatments consisted of poultry viscera meal, swine viscera meal (SVM), bovine meat and bone meal, and basal diet; with and without protease addition. Two tests were performed. In the first test, the total excreta collection method was used with birds at 13 to 20 days of age and 25% of the reference feed was replaced by AOM. In the second test, a protein-free diet was administered to birds at 21 to 24 days of age and AOM replaced 25% of the starch. The inclusion of protease increased the apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen balance of SVM by 15.99% and the apparent metabolizable crude energy by 5.7%, and it also raised the coefficient of true ileal digestibility of the amino acids in the AOMs by 5.67% on average. The inclusion of protease improved the apparent metabolizable crude energy of AOMs, apparent metabolizable dry matter of bovine meat and bone meal, coefficient of true ileal digestibility of essential amino acids, and apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen balance of SVM. Dietary supplementation of protease may be a potential strategy to improve the digestibility of amino acids for broilers, a possibility of using animal-origin meals as a protein source of diets.

Association of sodium butyrate and phytase on the performance, bone quality and intestinal development in broilersOriginal Paper

This study assessed the effect of the combination of microencapsulated sodium butyrate (SB) and phytase (PH) on the performance, intestinal integrity, and bone development of broilers. The experiment comprised 736 chicks distributed in a completely randomised design in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme (with and without the inclusion of SB and with the inclusion of PH at the recommended dose and superdosing) totalling four treatments and eight repetitions of 23 birds each. SB was added at 0.750 kg/tonne and PH was included at 750 phytase units (FTU)/kg and 1 500 FTU/kg of diet. The live weight (LW), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion (FC) were evaluated weekly. Bone measurements of the tibia and femur, densitometry, length, the Seedor index, and diameter were performed at seven and 28 days. In the same ages, fragments of the jejunum and ileum segments were collected and subjected to a morphometry analysis. At seven days of age, the birds supplemented with the phytase superdosing showed a better FI and LW, and the microencapsulated SB in the diet showed a better LW and FC. In the period from one to 28 days, the treatment supplemented with SB provided a higher FI and LW. The SB supplementation resulted in greater bone measurements at seven and 28 days. The use of the superdosing phytase increased the villus length and width of the jejunum at seven days and at 28 days. There was an increase in the villus length, villus-to-crypt ratio, absorption area, and muscular layer of the jejunum and a decrease in the crypt width of the jejunum. The SB supplementation increased the ileum crypt width at seven days and there was no effect on any intestinal segment at 28 days. The supplementation of SB or PH 1 500 FTU/kg in the broiler diets' growth promoter or antibiotic-free resulted in a better performance and bone measurements, while the association of the additional PH 1 500 FTU/kg and SB supplementation resulted in the greater depth and width of the jejunum crypt and villus : ileum crypt at seven days and greater villus length and ileum absorption area at 28 days. The association of SB and PH may be a strategy to improve the performance and bone quality and intestinal integrity in broilers.

Evaluation of ElecTIS bioreactor for the micropropagation of Malus sylvestris (L.) Mill., an important autochthonous species of AlbaniaOriginal Paper

Malus sylvestris (L.) Mill., an economically-important fruit tree, is native to Albania and in many parts of Europe. It is cultivated as an ornamental tree, while its fruits are collected for food and a source of antioxidant substances. It is included in The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. For these reasons, it is very important to optimise a micropropagation protocol, in order to obtain great numbers of clonal plantlets for ex situ conservation and production purposes. A liquid culture in a temporary immersion system (TIS) is a recently-proposed system for large-scale in vitro plant propagation. In this study, lateral buds of M. sylvestris were inoculated in MS medium with BAP (1 mg/L) and NAA (0.1 mg/L). In order to avoid oxidative stress, different antioxidants were previously tested with the culture in a gelled medium, and the combination of ascorbic acid and citric acid (both at 100 mg/L) was selected for the following culture in TIS. Stabilised explants were then cultivated in ElecTIS, an innovative TIS bioreactor, and in a semisolid medium, after which the two culture systems were evaluated. Overall, the ElecTIS showed to be more effective for all the tested parameters.

Grapevine Pinot gris virus infecting grapevines in Romania - Short CommunicaitonShort Communication

Grapevine Pinot gris virus (GPGV) has been identified in many grape growing countries of the world since 2012. The aim of this work was to investigate the presence of GPGV on some accessions collected from a germplasm collection, in addition to the propagation material and clonal selection samples. During 2019-2020, a total of 199 samples have been analysed by a double antibody sandwich - enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) for the presence of GPGV, Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), Grapevine leafroll-associated virus-1+3 (GLRaV-1+3) and Grapevine fleck virus (GFkV). Among them, 107 samples (53.76%) showed a GPGV-infection, associated with or without symptoms on the leaves (deformations, chlorosis, mosaic, wrinkles) or stunting plants. The distribution of infected varieties showed a high rate of infection in old varieties (37.38%), followed by clones (32.71%), rootstocks (11.21%), clonal selections (9.35%) and new varieties (9.35%). The tests revealed the association of GPGV with GFkV (5 cases) and GLRaV-1+3 (2 cases). GPGV should be included in the rules of grapevine certification schemes for the production of virus-free mother plants.

The effect of weather conditions in southern Russia on the frost resistance of apricot generative budsOriginal Paper

One of the reasons limiting the apricot expansion in the world is the short period of winter dormancy in the plants and the rapid development of generative buds in the spring. Apricot flower buds often die even after small spring return frosts that limit the commercial culture of this fruit crop. The aim of this investigation was to study collection-breeding plantations and select frost-resistant genotypes that have promise for commercial and breeding use. To solve this problem, the frost resistance of generative buds in 50 apricot cultivars and the breeding forms of various origins were studied by freezing treatments of the branches in a climatic chamber. The Czech cultivar 'Leala' was selected due to its best frost resistance. In late winter 2020-2021, six cultivars and breeding forms, which kept 41.8 to 65.9% of the generative buds alive, were identified. These genotypes are characterised by a slow development that prevents any negative freezing temperature effects. Thus, the results of the study confirmed the dependence of the adaptation mechanisms in apricot plants on the rates of their morphogenesis and abiotic factor pressures.

The regeneration of Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) share in the secondary hornbeam stands using the complex cuttingOriginal Paper

In the paper, the results of the complex cuttings were presented in the secondary hornbeam stands with the aim of regenerating the natural beech stands in the northern regions of Azerbaijan. For this purpose, three complex cutting procedures were carried out with a recurrence at 5 and 10 years in four sites of the secondary hornbeam stands in the northern regions. The experimental plots were characterised with: a stand density of 0.5-0.7, the age of the forest stands of 60-130 years, undergrowth of 12-25 years, a stand volume of 130-200 m3.ha-1, the beech percentage in the composition of stands of 17-28%, hornbeam 62-79% spread over the southern and northern slopes of the mountains. As a result of the complex cuttings, the share of beech trees in the composition of the parent stands increased 2.2-3.0 times. During cutting, the share of beech trees, as a part of undergrowth, increased 3.8-4.3 times. Based on the data, mathematical models were established reflecting the dynamics of the numbers of the undergrowth and the total stand volume of the forest stands depending on the participation percentage of beech trees in the parent stand.

A simplified method for application of natural regeneration in black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) stands in HungaryOriginal Paper

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is one of the most important forest tree species in Hungary, covering approximately 24% of the forest land and providing 25% of the annual timber supply. One third of these black locust stands are high forests (planted with seedlings) and the remaining stands are coppices. An auxiliary table was developed for planning the black locust natural regeneration in order to determine the sprouting criteria based on stand volume at the final cutting age. Twenty forest subcompartments were selected for investigating the possibility of black locust regeneration by root suckers. The basic yield and stand structure factors were determined using the numerical yield table for black locust stands. The results show that the regeneration of black locust stands from root suckers can be recommended on good and medium quality sites without a decrease in yield or stem quality. Black locust stands of good and medium quality (yield classes I, II, III and IV) may be regenerated from suckers in general until their growing stock attains and if their health is adequate. The simplicity of the practice-oriented auxiliary table based on the black locust yield table may further the development of management and wood utilization of the species.

However, literature which reviews and examines the environmental valuation studies is limited. Thus, this paper performed a literature review on forest contingent valuation studies conducted in the Ethiopian context in the past two decades (2000 to May 2022), focusing on two specific objectives: (i) to examine amounts of resources that households are willing to pay (WTP) for forest conservation, and (ii) to identify determinants of households' WTP. Results indicate the mean lower annual WTP of USD 0.41 (2.63 birr) and 7.04 man-days per household in money and labour time, respectively. Whereas the mean upper annual WTP of USD 53.52 per household in monetary payment and 94.34 man-days per household in labour time contribution are found for the management and conservation of forest in Ethiopia. The finding reveals that there is a limited proportion of the examined studies that included and estimated WTP in a non-monetary payment vehicle, implying a need for future researches on the topic. The result shows that demographic and socio-economic variables, physical assets ownership, institutional and infrastructural services and bid price variables were the main determinants of households' WTP. This suggests that the forest conservation intervention program involving public participation in the country needs to consider the identified determinants of WTP in design and implementation of the program. Moreover, the finding indicates the presence of mixed results on the effect and direction in which some determinants of WTP are affected. This recommends a pressing need for comprehensive future studies on the research theme.

Phylogenetic and diversity analyses of Garlic common latent virus based on the TGB and CP gene sequenceOriginal Paper

Garlic common latent virus (GarCLV, Carlavirus), in co-infection, often worsens the severity of other Allium viruses on the garlic (Allium sativum Linnaeus). The nucleotide (nt) and amino acid (aa) sequences of the TGB and CP genes were analysed to get the first deep insight into the genomic variations and population structure of GarCLV. Global recombinant-free isolates were clustered into three clades in both the nt-based phylogenetic trees of TGB and CP. The clade 3 isolates shared low similarity percentages among themselves, as well as to the clade 1 and 2 isolates. Most major aa changes in the CP were observed on its 5' and 3' ends. Clade 2 obtained the lowest S, η, k, and π values for both the TGB and CP, which indicated low variations among its isolates. Both TGB and CP have undergone a negative selection, with CP being under stronger negative pressure than TGB. Neutrality tests estimated the non-significant negative values to all clades for TGB and CP, except Tajima's D for clade 2 of the TGB. The results of the Ks*, Kst*, Z*, and Snn tests suggested that all three phylogroups were divergent to each other for both TGB and CP. The high Fst on all the clade comparisons for both TGB and CP showed a large gene flow among three clades.

Effect of drought and waterlogging on saccharides and amino acids content in potato tubersOriginal Paper

The study was focused on the effect of drought and waterlogging stresses in two-year pot experiments in the peat substrate on the content of glucose, fructose and sucrose and free amino acids in potato tubers of four cultivars (yellow-fleshed Laura, Marabel, Milva and blue-fleshed Valfi) after 71 days of exposure to stresses conditions (BBCH 909). Drought and waterlogging increased levels of fructose, glucose, and sucrose in three potato cultivars except for cv. Laura. Drought stress increased l-proline (+248.4%), l-hydroxyproline (+135.3%), l-arginine (+29.97%), l-glutamic acid (+29.09%) and l-leucine (+22.58%) contents in all analysed cultivars. Moreover, the high effect of drought stress on an increase of l-phenylalanine, l-histidine, l-threonine, and total free amino acids content of the cvs. Laura, Valfi and Marabel has been observed. A comparison of the effects of drought and waterlogging stresses on the content of total amino acids showed an increase under drought and a decrease under waterlogging conditions. On average, of all cultivars, waterlogging stress caused an increase of l-tyrosine content, whereas drought stress decrease. In addition, drought stress caused a significant increase of l-proline in all cultivars while waterlogging its decrease. Obtained results confirmed different responses of susceptible or resistant cultivars to abiotic stresses.

Impact of different fallow durations on soil aggregate structure and humus status parametersOriginal Paper

Soil aggregate structure and soil organic matter are closely interrelated and commonly considered as key indicators of soil quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different fallow durations on indices of soil structure and humus status indicators. Studies were conducted on abandoned agricultural fields (15, 20 and, 35 years after abandonment). As a reference site, we used a cultivated field in the area. The experimental soil fields are classified as Gleyic Cambisols. Soil macroaggregates were separated with the sieve (dry sieve) to seven aggregate size fractions, i.e.> 10, 10-5, 5-2, 2-1, 1-0.5, 0.5-0.25 and < 0.25 mm. The humus status parameters of soils included the following indicators: soil organic carbon (Corg), humus reserves (QH), the degree of humification of organic matter (SOMdh), fractions of humic acids (HA) (free and bound with monovalent cations and Al2O3, Fe2O3, bound with Cа2+ which forms humates, bound with clay minerals), fulvic acids (FA) (free aggressive) and ratio of HA to FA (CHA : CFA). After a fallow period of more than 20 years on the surface formation of a sod layer. A long-term fallow period had an impact on the mean weight diameter of the aggregates (MWD) and agronomically valuable aggregates (AVA). Fallow soils have a significantly better structure than soils under a cultivated field. Long-term cultivation leads to the deterioration of soil structure and the formation of large aggregates (>10 mm). The Corg content remains at the level of the background content when the soils are left fallow for less than 15 years and increases over time. The Corg in the upper 0-20 cm soil layer has been shown to increase from 3.55 to 8.74% on arable land that has been fallow for 35 years and has been largely associated with significant accumulation of organic matter within the plant root mass. Mature sites are characterized by an increase of fulvic acids in the humus composition in comparison with their arable analogues. The abandonment of soil agricultural use and the cessation of mechanical tillage results in the restoration of the natural structure of soils and the improvement of their agrophysical properties. Such studies have not been previously conducted in the Primorsky region of the Russian Far East.

Detection of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis in environmental samples from infected Czech dairy herdsOriginal Paper

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the suitability of environmental sampling to screen Czech dairy herds to detect Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) and to find the most convenient location for the MAP detection in the lactating cow area. Environmental samples (ES, n = 72) from milking parlour holding pens (n = 19), milking alleyways (n = 19) and free-stall alleyways (n = 34) from 19 herds were simultaneously tested to detect MAP by a quantitative PCR (qPCR) and bacterial culture. Eight and thirteen samples from the milking parlour holding pens, twelve and eleven samples from the milking alleyways and eleven and eighteen samples from the free-stall alleyways were qPCR and culture positive, respectively. A 4.6 times higher probability of being culture positive than qPCR positive was detected for the assessable MAP detection results from the free-stall alleyways [P = 0.008 6, odds ration (OR) = 4.572 8)] and no association was found between the results from the milking parlour holding pens (P = 0.191 4) and the milking alleyways (P > 0.999 9) and the diagnostic method used. The percentage of qPCR-positive samples in the tested locations was detected for the milking alleyways (63.2%), free-stall alleyways and milking parlour holding pens. The herd infectious status was in agreement with 16 (84.2%), 14 (73.7%) and 12 (63.2%) qPCR results from the milking alleyways, free-stall alleyways (32.4%) and milking parlour holding pens (42.1%), respectively. No statistically significant differences were detected for these results (P = 0.396 1). MAP was detected by the qPCR and bacterial culture in all three locations where the ES were collected. We suggest an environmental sampling followed by MAP detection by qPCR as an easy-to-perform time-saving protocol for MAP screening in Czech dairy herds. Although the milking alleyways seem to be the most convenient location for the environmental sampling, this assumption was not statistically supported.

Recurrent hydronephrosis and spontaneous renal rupture caused by lymphoplasmacytic inflammation in a catCase Report

A seven-year-old male cat that was previously diagnosed with - and treated for - left hydronephrosis due to suspected idiopathic proteinaceous materials in the renal pelvis, presented with a short history of anorexia and vomiting. The abdominal ultrasound revealed bilateral hydronephrosis, and the intravenous pyelography showed a moderate amount of free fluid in the retroperitoneal space at 48 hours. After the nephrectomy, the gross examination of the right kidney revealed a very thin capsule with urine leakage, and the right renal pelvis showed small, black deposits. The histopathology of the right kidney revealed hydronephrosis with compression atrophy, necrosis of the renal cortex/medulla, and a moderate lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. The crystallographic analysis revealed that the black deposits were composed of 100% protein and no minerals. The cat was diagnosed with hydronephrosis and spontaneous renal rupture caused by proteinaceous pelvic materials, secondary to the idiopathic renal lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. In addition to revealing the possibility that immune-mediated renal disease can induce spontaneous renal rupture in cats, this case report demonstrates the utility of imaging for diagnosing and monitoring hydronephrosis, detecting urine leakage, and planning surgery.

Aggressive behaviour of Hodgkin's-like lymphoma in a domestic ferretCase Report

A 3-year-old castrated male ferret was suspected to have lymphoma based on a markedly enlarged mesenteric lymph node. Hodgkin's-like lymphoma (HLL) was suspected because numerous Reed-Sternberg-like cells were observed in the fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the mesenteric lymph node. In the post-mortem histopathology, neoplastic cells were invasively proliferated not only in the mesenteric lymph nodes, but also in the liver and spleen. Immunohistochemically, most neoplastic cells were positive for vimentin and BLA-36, weakly positive for CD20, and negative for Pax5, CD79a, CD3, CD45, and Iba-1, demonstrating similarity to human Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). In addition, a prominent programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) expression was observed at the sites showing malignant tumour proliferation. HLL in non-human beings can be morphologically and immunophenotypically similar to human HL, but the prognosis and clinical outcome may differ. This is the first study analysing the PD-1 expression in a ferret, suggesting that PD-1 can be a novel diagnostic and prognostic factor in a similar manner to humans.

Food hypersensitivity and feline hyperaesthesia syndrome (FHS): A case reportCase Report

A 2-year-11-month-old female spayed cat was at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital of Ghent University presenting with hyperactivity, scratching and licking all over her body and an abnormal urination behaviour. Nothing remarkable was found on the dermatology and neurological examination. Based on the owner's history and video material, the presence of feline hyperaesthesia syndrome (FHS) was hypothesised. A symptomatic treatment with gabapentin was established for a month without any significant improvement. An elimination diet with hydrolysed protein sources was started and, as a result, the dose of gabapentin was reduced after three days and completely stopped after one week. With the exception of two non-intentional exposures to non-hypoallergenic diets and the challenge with new protein sources by the owner, the cat has been free of symptoms, with the exception of a slight reaction in the lumbar area (significantly reduced in comparison before starting the diet), and without the use of medication. In conclusion, an elimination diet should be considered as part of the diagnostic plan for FHS and should not be delegated to the last step if the patient's condition allows it.

Globally, people started gravitating toward organic food as health consciousness rose. From the farm to the consumer's fork, organic food is produced using a comprehensive method. Organic farming has provided farmers and producers with many opportunities, but there are still difficulties concerning the cost of production and distribution. Due to environmental sustainability challenges, climate change, soil fertility, biological assortment, and consumer well-being, organic farming is attracting more attention than conventional farming. Organic farming can be done using standardised methods and has many common issues with conventional farming. Organic farming has some unique problems as well. With the right strategies, careful planning, and government assistance, many difficulties faced by farmers can be addressed. The downstream material flow of the supply chain, and in particular demand estimation, market price, and identifying customer segments, has been identified as a significant problem in organic farming. Massive losses have been incurred along with the entire supply chain a due to the inadequate demand estimation that has caused surpluses and shortages in the produce. A few farmers have resolved the cash flows and material information controlling problem. This article proposes various related hypotheses associated with identifying customer segments, forecasting demand for the product, and profitability as market price changes in the crop.

Genetic diversity of plant genetic resources provides the foundation for breeding programmes aimed at developing high-yielding rice varieties with tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Given the abundance of available genetic resources, efficient approaches for their characterisation are essential. In this study, 182 Malaysian rice accessions representing different maturity groups were characterised using 20 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. The analysis identified 183 alleles, ranging from two (RM507) to 22 (RM154), with an average of 9.15 alleles per locus. Observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.000 to 0.506 and 0.319 to 0.864, respectively. Polymorphism information content (PIC) values ranged from 0.2744 (RM495) to 0.8475 (RM154), with an average of 0.6216 per locus. Unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analysis revealed two major groups. In general, the accessions were clustered according to their adaptive ecosystem type, with most lowland varieties, including lowland breeding lines (92.4%), assigned to Group I, whereas most upland varieties (86.7%) belonged to Group II. This grouping pattern was supported by STRUCTURE analysis, which identified K = 2 as the optimal number of clusters, indicating that the studied accessions were structured into two major genetic groups. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) further supported this grouping pattern, with the first three axes explaining 39.63% of the total variation. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that 31% of the total variation occurred among populations, 63% among accessions, and 6% within accessions. The results also indicated the possible presence of duplicate accessions within the collection. This study provides valuable insights for future breeding programmes aimed at developing high-yielding rice varieties with a broad genetic base and supports the effective management and conservation of rice genetic resources.

The effect of deep-tillage depths on crop yield: A global meta-analysisOriginal Paper

The tillage depth plays a critical role in solving soil compaction - a global problem of soil degradation. However, to date, there are few research reported about tillage depth, and the standard of optimum tillage depth is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to quantify the effect of tillage depths on crop yield across a global scale, and then to analysis their influence factors such as local climate, soil properties, and managements. Moreover, a global distribution of the optimal tillage depths was estimated by using a random-forest model. Overall, our result demonstrated that crop yield first increased within tillage depths from 25 to 35 cm, and then reduced under higher depth of deep tillage compared to conventional tillage, according to 1109 wheat, maize and soybean (WMS) yield observations from 202 studies and 109 publications. Visibly, 35 cm hence became the optimum tillage depth of WMS across the world, while it varies with different regions. Furthermore, higher crop yields observed in areas with a humid climate, high clay contents, and large bulk density under the optimal depth 40, 35 and 45 cm, respectively. In contrast, a lower yield was observed in areas with arid climates, silty and sandy soils, and lower bulk density within optimal depth of 25 cm, 30 cm, and 25 to 35 cm. Human management efforts, including fertilizer addition, irrigation, straw returning, and changing of cropping system or crop species mostly increased the crop yield under deep tillage. Particularly, our meta-analysis indicated that straw returning needs a greater depth. Finally, we predicted the distributions of optimum depths, which showed that 30 and 35 cm were the optimum tillage depths in the temperate and tropical regions, and the total crop yields of global WMS increased by 2689 million tons per year under the optimal tillage depth, compared with the conventional tillage.

Selection of trees for rubbing by the wild boar (Sus scrofa) in the Sidi Boughaba forested Moroccan Ramsar site: Assessment, implications, and perspectivesOriginal Paper

Knowledge of mechanisms by which large mammals select rubbing trees (RT) is a major challenge for the effective management of forests and wildlife resources. In this study, we investigated this issue regarding the Wild boar (Sus scrofa) in the Moroccan forested site of Sidi Boughaba as a case study. We used data from four sets of variables, namely topography, forest type, landscape composition, and microhabitat, measured at 58 rub and control trees, to determine the factors associated with the occurrence of RT by means of generalized linear mixed models. Our results showed that the RT occurrence increased with a high density of red juniper trees and declined with distance to the nearest footpath. Variation partitioning analysis revealed that the pure fraction of microhabitat was the most robust in explaining this occurrence (adj. R2 = 0.17, P < 0.001), followed by that of forest type (adj. R2 = 0.05, P < 0.05). A scientific monitoring system must be set up to strike a balance between the availability of forest trees on the one hand and the pressure exerted by wild boars on this internationally importance site on the other. It is imperative to test the geographical generality of our results in other Mediterranean forests.
