Sci., 2025, 71(7):336-346 | DOI: 10.17221/31/2025-JFS This paper analyses the accounting and tax treatment of forests as biological assets in the Czech Republic under Act No. 563/1991 Coll., on Accounting, and its implementing regulations. It compares national approaches with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), focusing on the International Accounting Standard IAS 41 – Agriculture. A comparative-analytical method was used to identify key differences in classification, valuation, and reporting practices. Czech legislation values forests at historical cost and classifies them as non-depreciable land, whereas IFRS requires fair value measurement, capturing biological transformation and the economic potential of forest ecosystems. The findings show that while the Czech framework ensures legal clarity and tax alignment, it lacks integration with environmental accounting frameworks such as the United Nations System of Integrated Environmental Economic Accounts (SEEA) and does not reflect ecosystem services or ESG (environmental, social, governance) reporting needs. In contrast, IFRS provides a dynamic representation of forest assets, supporting transparency and comparability in international contexts. The study contributes to the ongoing harmonisation debate by offering recommendations to improve the alignment of Czech accounting with international standards, thus supporting sustainable forest management and enhancing investment credibility. Its originality lies in combining legislative analysis with international practice review, highlighting the gap between ecological value and financial reporting in forestry. |

Food Sci., 2025, 43(4):283-290 | DOI: 10.17221/127/2024-CJFS Pink oyster mushrooms are rich in protein, dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals, making them a great addition to any diet. However, pink oyster mushrooms have the ability to accumulate high concentrations of heavy metals, some of which, such as cadmium, can cause adverse effects on human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of pink oyster mushrooms to absorb Cd from substrates contaminated with Cd and to assess the human health risks associated with the consumption of these mushrooms. An experiment was carried out in a completely randomised design and included four treatments (four Cd contamination levels i.e. 0, 20, 50 and 100 mg·kg–1) with three replications. Cd accumulation in mushrooms increased with increasing Cd content in substrates and ranged from 1.8 mg·kg–1 (non-contaminated substrate) to 23.8 mg·kg–1 of dry mass (substrate contaminated with 100 mg·kg–1 of Cd). On the other hand, total mushroom yield showed a decreasing trend with increasing Cd levels in substrates. The results of the present study suggest that pink oyster mushrooms possess the capability to absorb Cd from the substrate in which they grow. The obtained results for target hazard quotient (THQ) of Cd point to the conclusion that the consumption of mushrooms cultivated on the Cd-contaminated substrates could produce negative health effects. |

Food Sci., 2025, 43(5):358-364 | DOI: 10.17221/93/2025-CJFS Enrichment of yoghurt with probiotic bacterial strains and prebiotic plant substrates has gained increasing interest among both consumers and food manufacturers. In this study, limited growth and fermentation activity of the commercial probiotic strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v were observed when cultured in ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk. Electron microscopy revealed the strain's ability to adhere to the surface of prebiotically active plant particles, specifically quinoa, lucuma, and baobab powders. Supplementation of these plant substrates at a concentration of 1% (w/v) slightly enhanced the growth of L. plantarum 299v in UHT milk and improved its viability over a 28-day storage period at 5 ± 1 °C. Co-cultivation of L. plantarum 299v with the yoghurt starter culture YC-381 (in a 1 : 0.5 ratio), along with the addition of 1% (w/v) of lucuma, quinoa, or baobab powders to UHT milk, was successfully achieved. These substrates positively influenced the stability of L. plantarum 299v during the 28-day storage and in the case of quinoa of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus during 21-day storage at 5 ± 1 °C. Moreover, the addition of 1% (w/v) plant powders slightly stimulated the production of lactic and acetic acids in yoghurt containing L. plantarum 299v. |

However, Hanglongbing (HLB) disease, caused by Candidatus Liberibactor asiaticus (CLAs), poses a major threat to sweet orange production, by hindering colour, quality and export. Carotenoid cleavage oxygenases (CCOs), which include carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases (CCDs) and 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenases (NCEDs), are essential for plant growth, development, and adaptation to phytohormonal, biotic, and abiotic stresses. This study identified 14 CsCCO genes in C. sinensis. Structural and conservation studies were conducted using gene structure and conserved domain analysis. Genomic localisation, gene duplication, and similarity among these genes were also examined. Gene ontology analysis predicted that CsCCOs could be involved in the carotene catabolic process. Analysis of cis-regulatory elements revealed that most CsCCO genes are involved in responses to stress, light signalling, and plant growth regulation. Genes in the 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) subgroup are predominantly localised in chloroplasts, whereas genes in other subgroups are primarily found in the cytoplasm. All 13 of the CsCCOs genes identified were regulated by 25 microRNAs, indicating the crucial role of microRNAs in gene regulation in Citrus sinensis. The expression patterns of CsCCO genes in response to biotic and abiotic stress were studied. Transcriptome analysis demonstrated that CsNCED3 and CsNCED10 were up-regulated in response to HLB. This provides insight into the function of CCO genes in C. sinensis and identifies potential candidate genes for combating citrus greening. |

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a versatile crop used for food, feed, and raw materials, contributing significantly to global food systems. Abiotic stresses like drought and soil fertility limit its production. Fertilisation is an amelioration technique that optimises maize growth and yield by maintaining optimum nutrition and leveraging nutrient deficiency conditions. Precision agricultural tools like chlorophyll meters are essential for non-destructive chlorophyll assessment and nitrogen status. An experiment conducted at the University of Debrecen evaluated the impact of nitrogen (N) fertilisation (0, 90, and 150 kg/ha) and three maize cultivars (P9610-FAO 340, DKC4590-FAO360, and GKT376-FAO360) on physiological parameters, namely: relative chlorophyll content (SPAD), normalised differences vegetation index (NDVI) and grain quality. Results showed that SPAD and NDVI positively correlated (P < 0.05) with grain quality and yield. Nitrogen application significantly influenced SPAD. Maize cultivars and N rates with higher chlorophyll content had maximum yield. Cultivar responses to nitrogen rates significantly (P < 0.05) varied by crop year. Higher SPAD and NDVI values were associated with higher protein content. Therefore, SPAD and NDVI values could be used to analyse the nutrient requirements of maize under field conditions to estimate grain yield. |

Food Sci., 2025, 43(4):274-282 | DOI: 10.17221/139/2023-CJFS This research aimed to evaluate the type of solvent (80% methanol, ethanol, and water), solute/solvent ratio (1 : 10 and 1 : 15 w/v), maceration time (0 h, 24 h and 7 d) and stage of leaf maturity [vegetative (VW) and generative (GW)] on the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of watercress leaf extracts. The leaf was characterised by determining the chemical composition, the phytochemical profile, and the colour. The GW presented the highest moisture content [93.25 g·(100 g)–1], carbohydrates [70.74 g·(100 g)–1], and lightness (L* = 59.66), and the presence of alkaloids, phytosterols, phenols, and flavonoids. VW had the highest protein content [26.52 g·(100 g)–1] and the lowest presence of phytochemicals. The best solvent for the extraction was distilled water at a 1 : 15 w/v ratio, GW at 24 h rest centrifuged at 2 300 × g for 15 min, obtaining the highest values of phenols [2 077 mg GAE·(100 g)–1], of dust and an inhibition power of 85.09% by the 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation (ABTS+) radical method. Therefore, cress leaves in the generative stage can be considered a potential source of bioactive compounds, and using water as an extracting agent for these compounds makes it a viable and economical method to be used in the food industry, and in addition, to be friendly to the environment. |

The presence of shared factors and undesirable outputs increases the complexity of evaluating the efficiency of these systems. To address this issue, we first analysed the production possibility sets of the agricultural subsystems, pastoral subsystems, and agricultural and pastoral systems. Then, two bounded adjusted measure (BAM) models considering shared factors and undesirable outputs were proposed to evaluate the divisional efficiency of agricultural and pastoral subsystems. Additionally, a network BAM model in the presence of shared factors and undesirable outputs was developed to assess overall efficiency. Undesirable outputs were handled by slack-based measures in the three novel models. The proposed models were used to evaluate the efficiency of agricultural and pastoral systems across 30 provinces and cities in China. To explore the impact of undesirable outputs, the efficiency of ignoring undesirable outputs was investigated and compared with that obtained from the new method. These results suggest that ignoring undesirable outputs may misestimate efficiency to a certain extent. |

Food Sci., 2025, 43(5):326-335 | DOI: 10.17221/201/2024-CJFS Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a bactericidal agent used as a common disinfectant since the 1950s. However, its effectiveness may have diminished over the time due to the rise of microbial resistance even among nonantibiotics. In this study, we evaluate the response of 46 Staphylococcus aureus isolates to CHXdihydrochloride according to their origin and phenotype (haemolysis induction, coagulase production, methicillin resistance and biofilm formation). Following classification, the influence of seven CHX concentrations (10.00–0.50 mg·L–1) on planktonic cell growth and biofilm formation was evaluated spectrophotometrically at 620 nm and 595 nm (24 h). Even though the effect of CHX was strain-specific irrespective of origin or phenotypic profile, concentrations above 2.50 mg·L–1 were almost uniformly determined as bactericidal. Although the non-bactericidal concentrations did not indicate any statistically significant differences, they did promote biofilm formation in some cases. Overall, our results suggest that CHX is still an effective disinfectant and an antimicrobial agent against S. aureus. |

Over a four-year period (2017–2020), temporal variations in flowering were evaluated in ‘Honeycrisp’ apple trees on eight rootstocks (G.30, G.969, G.202, G.41, G.11, M.9T337, M.26 EMLA and V.6) planted in 2014 in Chihuahua, México. Among the variables evaluated were the probability of late-spring frost, winter chill units, growing degree days, flowering period, foliar nutrient concentrations, trunk cross-sectional area, number and weight of fruit per tree, and production efficiency. Significantly different chill unit accumulations occurred over the four years, with values falling between 974 and 1 415, where for the latter value, the start of flower opening was earlier, but there was a higher risk of damage by temperatures ≤ –2 °C. There was no effect of rootstock on the time of onset and end of flowering. The most productive combinations were ‘Honeycrisp’ on G.969, G.11 and V.6 with yield estimates of 35 300, 34 200 and 33 600 kg/ha, respectively. The commercial production of ‘Honeycrisp’ apple trees requires the evaluation of their agronomic performance with different rootstocks. Flowering is particularly important since this phenological stage is so closely linked to productivity and is strongly affected by variations in winter temperatures. |

The mentioned problems appear more in areas with hot and humid summers. The research focused on the quality of the kernel in terms of colour and marketability, as well as the dry matter of the kernels. Additionally, the ease of mesocarp separation from endocarp was examined. Experimental trials were designed with 27 treatment combinations to address the mentioned issues using varying concentrations of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon) at different harvest dates. In this study, using 1 920 ppm of ethephon on August 22nd resulted in the best quality walnut kernels and mesocarp. Researchers in this project successfully achieved the highest quality of walnut kernels and nuts in a region where over 90% of the harvest consisted of dark-kernel walnuts. |

(Prague), 2025, 52(3):237-249 | DOI: 10.17221/96/2024-HORTSCI In recent years, grafting has emerged as an efficient and alternative tool to the relatively slow conventional breeding methods, aiming to increase tolerance to abiotic stresses and soil pathogens while improving yield and quality attributes in fruit vegetables. In the present investigation, six inter-specific cucurbitaceous rootstocks, viz. sponge gourd (SG), ridge gourd (RG), ash gourd (AG), bottle gourd (BG), and Summerfit (SF), an inter-specific hybrid of snap melon × acidulus melon, were evaluated for cucumber (C) cv. ‘Kashi Nutan’. Experimental findings revealed that cucumber grafted onto inter-specific SF exhibited a 14.63%, 57.5%, and 20.05% increase in vine length, number of branches, and dry matter production, respectively, compared to the self-rooted control. Photosynthetic parameters such as photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), and maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (PS II) (Fv/Fm) were also higher in cucumber leaves grafted onto the SF rootstock. Compared to self-rooted plants, cucumber grafted onto SF recorded 72.3% more fruits, a 36.9% increase in fruit weight, and an 80.9% higher fruit yield. The SF rootstock also showed a 44.54% increase in total root length (TRL), a 77.11% increase in root volume, and a 27.25% increase in average root diameter over self-rooted cucumber. |

Results or conclusions of each study are briefly described, ranging by year of publication and alphabetical order of authors. The most important topic is physiological research, which includes 31 references. Referring to the years, the most productive was 2019 with 55 references, whereas the least prolific was the previous year 2018, providing only 33 references. One report was published in cooperation with authors from two countries. |

The average mercury content in muscles, livers, and kidneys of calves was 0.000 5 ± 0.000 0 mg.kg–1, 0.002 7 ± 0.000 5 mg.kg–1, and 0.004 1 ± 0.000 8 mg.kg–1, respectively. In fattening cattle, the average mercury content in muscles, livers and kidneys was 0.000 5 ± 0.000 0 mg.kg–1, 0.002 1 ± 0.000 2 mg.kg–1 and 0.004 9 ± 0.000 3 mg.kg–1, respectively. In cows, the average mercury content in muscles, livers and kidneys was 0.000 5 ± 0.000 0 mg.kg–1, 0.002 3 ± 0.000 1 mg.kg–1 and 0.006 9 ± 0.000 3 mg.kg–1, respectively. The maximum residual limit for human consumption was exceeded in 10 kidney samples (3 calves, 6 cows, 1 fattening cattle) and 1 liver sample (calf). In all age categories, the highest mercury concentrations were found in the kidneys, lower in the livers, and the lowest in the muscles. When comparing the age groups, significantly higher mercury concentrations were observed in the kidneys of cows than in calves and fattening cattle. It can be concluded that there is still a need for further monitoring of mercury concentrations in cattle tissues in the Czech Republic. |

Forty Californian rabbits, aged 35 days with an average body weight of 588 ± 34 g, were randomly assigned to four groups: a control group fed a standard diet, a group (T1) receiving the basal diet supplemented with 1.5% coriander seed powder, a group (T2) receiving the basal diet with oral LAS at 1 × 109 CFU/kg, and a group (T3) receiving both coriander seed powder and LAS. The study measured body weight, daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, mortality rate, blood metabolites, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal histomorphology. Results showed that rabbits fed with 1.5% coriander seed powder had significant improvements in body weight gain, feed conversion, and a reduction in mortality compared to the control. Both coriander seed powder and LAS improved blood metabolites, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal health. However, the combination of both additives did not provide additional benefits over the individual treatments. The findings suggest that either 1.5% coriander seed powder or LAS can enhance growth performance and health in rabbits under subtropical conditions. |

Sci., 2025, 71(9):456-467 | DOI: 10.17221/36/2025-JFS This article presents a doctrinal legal analysis of judicial practice concerning criminal tax offences in the Czech timber trade, with a primary focus on VAT fraud. Court decisions were examined thematically to identify key categories of fraud schemes, recurring evidentiary challenges, and patterns of judicial reasoning. Administrative and regulatory frameworks, such as the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), have played only a marginal role in Czech judicial practice, with a single decision explicitly referring to the EUTR. The findings highlight how courts rely on indicators such as fictitious supply chains, economically irrational transactions, and incomplete documentation to establish fraudulent intent. The study contributes to a better understanding of judicial reasoning in tax fraud cases and offers evidence-based recommendations for strengthening enforcement practice. The article focuses on Criminal Tax Law, i.e. examples of tax fraud in the timber trade that were not dealt with by the tax authorities as administrative offences but were assessed as criminal tax offences falling within the jurisdiction of criminal courts. Criminal Tax Law is a subfield of Czech Tax Law dealing with criminal activity in the area of tax and fee administration. (Lichnovský et al. 2020). The article contains all court decisions in the field of Criminal Tax Law dealing with the issue of timber trade. The article deals only with the criminal law aspects of tax law. No other court decisions were found in the Automated Legal Information System (ASPI). The ASPI legal information system contains only one court decision relating to the EUTR Regulation, which is cited below. Criminal cases in the field of forestry and timber industry constitute only a small part of the entire criminal tax law. In terms of the method of committing the criminal activity (issuing fictitious invoices, fictitious deliveries of goods), these are common frauds common to all economic activities. |

Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CIPKs) play a significant role in plant defence response to several stresses, including cold. In this study, we observed the expression of ScCIPK1, ScCIPK3, ScCIPK23 and ScCIPK24 in S. commersonii exposed to 4 °C at multiple time intervals. Initial findings revealed that these genes were under-expressed after 10 and 30 minutes of cold stress, except ScCIPK3. Notably, after 24 hours, all genes displayed higher expression levels compared to the non-stressed controls. These findings highlight the role of ScCIPK3 in the early stages of cold response and indicate a coordinated regulatory mechanism across CIPKs that likely contributes to the cold stress tolerance observed in S. commersonii. In this work, we introduce a model to elucidate the signalling crosstalk under cold stress in S. commersonii, providing insights that could facilitate the development of cold-resistant potato cultivars. |

In the present study, the accuracy of various G estimation methods is examined using long-term measurements from the Central European mountain meadow. The impact of different G approximation on calculated evapotranspiration by the Penman-Monteith method (ET) is analysed. Soil heat flux measurements and surface temperature data were used to determine G, while net radiation was used to approximate G. Neglecting G led to an overestimation of ET in the daily timestep. On the contrary, the FAO-recommended hourly approximation overestimated G, underestimating ET. Site-specific calibrations of G prediction models improved their accuracy. For daily average G, as well as for hourly average G, simple constant parameter models (i.e., models including a single parameter specifying the fraction of net radiation directly) provide satisfactory accuracy of ET evaluation. However, in an hourly timestep, net radiation fails as a predictor of G shortly after sunrise and before sunset. The findings emphasise the importance of considering G in ET calculations and the need for site-specific calibrations of G estimation models. |

A logit regression model revealed that grassland establishment lowers the likelihood of erosion events by about 64%, with erosion risk strongly influenced by altitude, land use, and management practices. Spatial mapping and soil suitability classification identified nearly 240 00 hectares – mainly along 33 000 concentrated runoff pathways – as suitable for targeted grassland conversion. Despite its soil-protective function, high opportunity costs hinder uptake in economically productive regions. Cluster analysis across EU Member States confirmed a strong link between low permanent grassland share and high erosion exposure. The findings underscore the need for regionally tailored policies, long-term financial support, and flexible land management options to enhance soil resilience and promote sustainable agriculture. |

However, the performance of microbial inoculant strains can vary widely depending on the cultivated species and environmental conditions. This study evaluated the ESALQ 1306 strain of Trichoderma harzianum, a soil fungus recognised as a biological control agent for crops such as soybean and strawberry, investigating its potential as a growth promoter in maize (Zea mays L.). Field experiments were conducted with three commercial cultivars (DKB255, DKB360, and 2B810) over two growing seasons, one under irrigation and the other under severe natural drought. The results revealed that Trichoderma (ESALQ 1306) significantly increased plant height, biomass, and grain yield, particularly under drought stress, despite lacking a formal recommendation for maize. The cv. DKB360 showed the greatest response, with yield increases of up to 60% compared to untreated controls. Inoculation also improved nutrient uptake, especially nitrogen, highlighting its potential to maintain soil health and fertility. These findings demonstrate that the ESALQ 1306 strain of Trichoderma is a promising soil bioinoculant for agriculture, capable of improving maize performance under both optimal and stressful conditions. However, it is important to emphasise that genotype-specific responses highlight the need to align bioinoculant application with selecting specific cultivars to ensure inoculation success. This insight is crucial for guiding future breeding programs and establishing clear regulatory guidelines for commercialising biological products, fostering sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. |

Small-plot field experiments (10 m2 each plot) were established on loam to clay loam mollic soil with total Se content 0.21–0.22 mg/kg in ®eliezovce on the land of the Central Control and Testing Institute in Agriculture of the Slovak Republic. The effect of growing season on two sources of selenium, in the form of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3 · 5 H2O) and sodium selenate (Na2SeO4), was monitored during the growth phase BBCH 29 (the end of the tillering phase) in a two-year experiment. The experiment included six foliar treatments in four repetitions, which were differentiated as follows: T1 – 30 kg N/ha; T1 Se032– – 30 kg N/ha and 20 g Se/ha; T1 Se042– – 30 kg N/ha and 20 g Se/ha; T2 – 30 kg N/ha and 10 kg S/ha; T2 Se032– – 30 kg N/ha, 10 kg S/ha and 20 g Se/ha; T2 Se042– – 30 kg N/ha, 10 kg S/ha and 20 g Se/ha. A statistically significant difference in yield was found between the growing seasons. Statistically non-significant impact of treatments on achieved yields was found. The highest average Se content in grain, 0.90 ± 0.28 mg/kg, was achieved on treatment T2 Se042–. The application of sodium selenite appeared to be less effective than selenate form in the evaluation of average Se content in grain, where statistically significantly higher Se contents (T1 Se042– 0.78 ± 0.22 mg/kg; T2 Se042– 0.90 ± 0.28 mg/kg) were found after selenate application. The application of two types of fertilisers and two forms of selenium did not significantly increase the content of N, P, Mg, and S in grain. The Fe content in the grain was increased by treatment T2 Se032–. The application of sodium selenate compared to sodium selenite significantly increased the starch content (T1 Se042– 56.39 ± 4.44%; T2 Se042– 55.87 ± 4.05) in the grain of spring wheat. |

We combined the propensity score matching (PSM) method with an inverse probability weighted regression (IPWRA) model to derive treatment effects of the adoption of these critical inputs using Farm Accountancy Data Network data. Results exhibit consistency across estimation techniques. Estimates of both IPWRA and PSM models showed that adoption of at least one of the chemical inputs decreases volatility of crop yield output and downside risk. The results are more robust for Estonian than for Slovenian farms suggesting on possible impacts of other exogenous factors such as climate change on mitigating the crop yield downside risk. |

Econ. - Czech, 2025, 71(10):537-549 | DOI: 10.17221/247/2024-AGRICECON To promote the sustainable consumption of prepared dishes, this study examines how green attribute information (GAI) and live streaming scenes experience (LSSE) influence consumers' green perceptions (GP) – including perceived green value (PGV) and perceived green trust (PGT) – and subsequently affect their purchase intention (PI). A green perception model was developed and tested using a mixed-method approach. Word cloud analysis was conducted on consumer comments collected from e-commerce platforms to extract key descriptors and concerns, which informed the design of a structured questionnaire. A total of 291 valid responses were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Results show that: (i) GAI does not directly impact PI, indicating that GP is a necessary mediator; (ii) GAI significantly influences PGV, but not PGT; (iii) GP fully mediates the GAI–PI relationship, although PGV has a negligible direct effect on PGT; (iv) LSSE significantly enhances both GP and PI; (v) GP partially mediates the LSSE–PI relationship. These findings highlight the dual role of LSSE in facilitating information adoption and emotional engagement, and suggest that enhancing LSSE design and enriching GAI are effective strategies to increase consumers' green perception and purchase intention towards prepared dishes. |

The system includes four layers – physical, sensor, computational, and interface and integrates actuators, sensors, decision-making modules, and analytics. A Python-based simulation using Control and SimPy showed an average washing time of 10.4 minutes and 97.5% cycle initiation accuracy under critical contamination. The Control was achieved via gated recurrent unit (GRU) prediction and proportional–integral–derivative (PID) regulation. Despite assumptions like ideal sensors and fixed conditions, the system proved feasible, with the future work targeting real-world validation and digital twin development. |
