A decision support system for herd health management for dairy farmsOriginal Paper

Industrial dairy farms boast highly advanced health monitoring and disease diagnosis systems. But without easily accessible, user-friendly web platforms for real-time decision-making, most dairy farmers cannot proactively manage herd health management and optimize treatments based on disease prediction and prevention. To bridge this gap, we have developed a web application of a Decision support system (DSS) for dairy health management based on machine learning. The system architecture combines a Flask backend with a React frontend and scalable cloud data storage and includes preprocessing, data integration, predictive modelling, and cost analysis. DSS forecasts herd diseases with an accuracy 6.66 mean absolute error and 2.35 median absolute deviation across predictions. Its core predictive capabilities rely on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks to forecast disease progression from historical records and on a linear trend model to project cuts in treatment costs. The system calculates medication dosages and cost per disease, streamlines supplier selection, and simulates various treatment scenarios, thereby identifying high-cost diseases with potential savings. In other words, this DSS application processes disease and treatment data by incorporating veterinary records into advanced data analytics and neural networks, thereby predicting diseases, optimizing disease prevention and treatment strategies, and reducing costs. As such, this DSS application provides dairy farmers with a tool for strategic decision-making, veterinary treatment planning, and cost-effective disease management towards improving animal welfare and increasing milk yield.

Modelling of energy demand prediction system in potato farming using deep learning methodOriginal Paper

Agriculture and energy are intricately connected, with agriculture being a significant energy consumer and supplier. In this comprehensive study, SPSS and Jupyter Notebook were used to model and predict the energy requirements of potato plants during cultivation. A system using deep learning methods, specifically the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), was also developed to accurately predict the classification of potato plant growth phases using image data. The CNN model, developed with 100 epochs and 5 layers, used 1 125 image data of potato plants, categorising them into two classes: the vegetative phase, with an energy requirement of 4 195.80 MJ·ha–1, and the generative phase, with an energy requirement of 746.45 MJ·ha–1. The model‘s accuracy in reflecting the actual data, with a mean absolute error of 0.11, mean square error of 0.01, and root mean square of 0.13, indicates no significant issues. The test predicted categorization with 99% precision, underscoring the thoroughness and validity of this study and reassuring the audience about the accuracy of the results. The study findings not only validate the use of deep learning in agriculture but also inspire the development of applications to predict the energy demand for each growth phase using plant image data.

Assessment of the accuracy of patient-specific drilling guides for cervical (C5–C6) and lumbar (L4–L5) vertebrae in catsOriginal Paper

Ten sets of vertebral biomodels and the corresponding drilling guides were created to evaluate the implantation accuracy in the cervical (C5–C6) and lumbar (L4–L5) vertebrae of cats. Smooth pins were implanted using the guides on the right side of five randomly assigned biomodel sets and on the left side of the remaining sets, with the contralateral side undergoing freehand implantation. Subsequently, a new tomographic study was conducted to measure the implantation angles. The pre-implantation angles were compared with the post-implantation angles between the techniques and among the sets. The guide-assisted implantation exhibited a lower dispersion compared to the freehand technique, with coefficients of variation of –1.95 and 48.9 in the cervical vertebrae and 1.98 and 9.39 in the lumbar vertebrae, respectively. However, no statistical difference was observed between the pre- and post-implantation angles, nor when comparing the vertebral segments (P > 0.05). Under the study conditions, the use of the guide failed to result in more accurate implantations in the C5–C6 and L4–L5 vertebral biomodels of cats.

The creation of the database system represents a complex task which is difficult to coordinate. In this work, a method of the logic framework was used for the coordination of each particular step to one integral part. In the Czech Republic, most of the information about soil was gathered within a systematic soil survey (KPP) in the period 1961–1970. Information about genetic and agronomic characteristics of agricultural soils was gathered for the whole Czech Republic. The other part of the data is coming from the databases of forest soils. This contribution is a continuation of the previous research. We are aware of the fact that in the Czech Republic exist also other soil information systems. In this work we also tried to show the practical exploitation of the large soil database. We applied many approaches to assess bulk density of the soil. It was calculated for the main soil groups and it could be applied on every soil profile in PUGIS system. We also showed different possibilities of mapping soil organic concentration or amount in soils.

Monitoring surface water pollution in Algeria using database indicesOriginal Paper

This study investigated how remote sensing techniques can pinpoint pollution in surface water areas. Researchers focused on the municipalities of Boumerdes, Corso, and Tidjalabine in Algeria’s Boumerdes province. The team used geographic information systems (GIS) to analyse pollution levels and their spatial distribution. Specifically, they employed the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to identify areas teeming with biodiversity and healthy vegetation. Furthermore, the compactness index provided insights into the overall evolution of the drainage network. This data proved invaluable in identifying areas likely impacted by pollution. Our study is part of a scientific approach to detecting, monitoring, and intervening in water pollution. The core objective was to develop an alternate approach to protecting productive farmland and populated areas by mitigating pollution in these susceptible zones. The NDVI and compactness index, along with their associated database, hold significant promise for environmental preservation efforts. This spatial procedure effectively maps the spatial temporal distribution of pollutants, providing targeted management strategies. The method’s user-friendly nature makes it easily applicable in other African countries.

Brassica and related crops are one of the most important and widely growing crops around the world. They have very broad utilization in human activities as fresh and processed food, fodder and forage of animals, condiments and ornamental plants. This group of plants belongs to one of the oldest domesticated crops with very wide geographic distribution and history of growing and human utilization. Brassicas are also very diverse from taxonomical and genetic viewpoint with rather long history of breeding. The First Edition of this book was published by CABI in 2006, this volume received very high evaluation and by reviewers was considered as “an exemplary job in making horticultural sense“. However, during the last two decades there was made enormous progress in research, breeding, growing and practical aspects of utilization of these crops. This newest edition of the book represents a very impressive, comprehensive and complex treatment of all the most important aspects related to vegetable brassicas and related crucifers used in horticulture.

Validation of the evaluation of longevity by weighted analysisOriginal Paper

We applied the Interbull validation methodology, a widely accepted method in animal breeding, to assess novel weighted and nonweighted repeatability models for the prediction of breeding values for longevity in Czech Holstein cattle. The population included in the estimation also contained 58 704 animals with genotypes. Performance records from 1 055 814 cows in the full dataset and from 831 995 cows in the trimmed dataset were used for evaluation. Both linear models included effects of herd-year-period, animal, permanent environment, and correction for milk production of individual cows in relation to herd average lactation curve, differing only in the use of weighs. The average reliability of the validation bulls increased in the full dataset from 0.85 without weight to 0.91 in the model with weight. This increase was also apparent in the trimmed dataset (from 0.42 to 0.50). Both models showed considerable inflation of genomic breeding values (GEBVs) by Interbull validation and did not manifest distinct benefits supporting their use in the routine evaluation of Czech Holstein cattle in the Czech Republic.

Application predictive modelling of Penicillium roqueforti germination in environmental conditions in cakeOriginal Paper

This study aimed to predict the germination of Penicillium roqueforti as one of the most important moulds in cake in certain environmental conditions that lead to cake spoilage. The germination rate of P. roqueforti was evaluated by culturing in the Yeast Extract Glucose Chloramphenicol Agar medium with different pH, water activity (aw), and inoculum size at three levels of temperature (15, 25, 30 °C) during 60 days by the factorial experiment. The results of analysis of variance (ANOVA) proved that environmental conditions affect germination significantly (P < 0.05). Predictive modelling illustrated that the temperature did not affect germination significantly, while no germination was seen at aw = 0.65. The minimum lag phase of germination was observed at aw = 0.9, pH = 6.5, and inoculum size of 1 000 spores per mL. The logistic model was found to be more precise for fitting the data of P. roqueforti in cakes.

Proposal of a conceptual framework for creating a model for the implementation of green growth indicators in the conditions of the Slovak RepublicOriginal Paper

Green growth promotes sustainable economic development by protecting the environment and efficiently using natural resources. Supporting green growth enhances long-term sustainability, quality of life, and climate change mitigation. This article aims to propose a conceptual framework for implementing green growth indicators in Slovakia by comparing their perception with that of the Czech Republic. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 3 281 Slovak and Czech forestry enterprises [Nomenclature of Economic Activities (NACE) classification 02.10], with 1 365 responses. The findings highlight significant differences in the approach to green growth indicators between small and large enterprises and between state and non-state enterprises. Additionally, the study examines how Slovakia and the Czech Republic manage these indicators, forming the basis for a conceptual framework for their implementation in Slovakia. The research contributes to the discourse on green growth and sustainability, key concepts in the 21st century.

Whole-genome resequencing data reveal the genetic diversity of local chickens in southern Zhejiang and surrounding areas in ChinaOriginal Paper

China’s local chicken breeds, especially those in the Zhejiang Province, are rich in genetic diversity owing to environmental heterogeneity and complex ecosystems. Distinctive local breeds have emerged through long-term natural selection and domestication. We investigated the genetic diversity and population structure of local chickens in southern Zhejiang and surrounding areas using whole-genome resequencing of 129 chickens from seven populations. A total of 1.8 terabytes of raw data was obtained, and 4 802 728 single nucleotide polymorphisms were detected. The Xianju chicken population exhibited the highest genetic diversity, while Yandang Partridge chickens were genetically distant from other chicken breeds. This study provides valuable information for conserving poultry genetic diversity and informs about breeding programmes of local Chinese chicken breeds.

Effects of praziquantel on early life stages of Grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idellaOriginal Paper

This study aimed to assess the toxicity of the anthelmintic drug praziquantel in the early life stages of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The toxicity was evaluated based on mortality, early ontogeny development, growth, oxidative stress biomarkers, antioxidant enzymes and histopathology. Praziquantel at all tested concentrations (1, 2, 4 and 6 mg/l) showed no significant adverse effects on the hatching of grass carp. Concentrations of 2, 4 and 6 mg/l praziquantel caused significantly (P < 0.01) higher mortality and slower growth compared with controls. Praziquantel at concentrations (4 and 6 mg/l) showed a significant (P < 0.01) delay of early ontogeny of grass carp. Concentration of 2 mg/l praziquantel caused significantly (P < 0.01) higher GST activity than controls. Among the groups, no histological changes were detected in tissues. For the early life of grass carp, praziquantel is safe at concentrations ≤1 mg/l.

Selection of high-quality tree peony varieties suitable for the south Yangtze River areaOriginal Paper

To select tree peony varieties with high ornamental value suitable for the hot and humid environment of the south Yangtze River area, 74 tree peony varieties from the Chenshan Botanical Garden in Shanghai were selected as experimental materials. The experiment involved initial selection for leaf humidity and heat tolerance, assessing the ornamental value during the flowering period of the following year and measuring a series of indicators such as the relative chlorophyll content of the leaves. Methods including principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and comprehensive membership function were employed. The results indicated that among the varieties assessed for humidity and heat tolerance, 43 obtained a composite score of 3.75 or above. Upon further assessment of the flowering period for these 43 varieties in the subsequent year, 14 varieties clustered in the top tier based on their scoring for ornamental value. Then, during the summer season, physiological indicators were measured for the previously selected 14 tree peony varieties. Combining these data with the comprehensive membership function, the humidity and heat tolerance of each variety were quantified. The synthesis of scores, combined with cluster analysis, revealed that varieties including ‘Yinhong Qiaodui’, ‘Shengge Jin’, ‘Linghua Zhanlu’, ‘Baixue Gongzhu’, ‘Di Guan’, and ‘Cunsong Ying’ exhibit both high ornamental value and tolerance to humidity and heat, making them suitable for cultivation in the south Yangtze River area.

Studies on some engineering properties of breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) starch flourOriginal Paper

This research work evaluated some engineering properties of breadfruit starch flour following standard procedures with the aim of providing engineering data that would help its usage in food processed industries. Starch was extracted from matured breadfruit fruits, modified using acid and engineering properties were examined following standard procedures. Results of moisture contents, loose and packed bulk densities, density ratio and porosity were ranged from 8.23–9.13% dry basis (DB); 0.44–0.51 g·mL–1; 0.60–0.66 g·mL–1; 70.01–80.14% and 19.87–29.99%, respectively. Similarly, Carr index values ranged from 19.44–30.61% and Hausner ratio values ranged from 1.25–1.43, indicating that the flour samples investigated had poor (native), fair (modified) and good (potato) flow properties, using Carr index standard. Amylose, amylopectin and amylose-amylopectin ratio contents values ranged from 21.52–29.77%; 70.23–78.48% and 0.28–0.42%, respectively. Also, the flour samples thermal properties values using Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) ranged from 106.4–129.09 °C; 31.93–78.36 °C; 106.2–175.75 °C; 214.90–278.6 J·g–1; 35.5–148.82 °C; 2.26–10.95 J·g–1·K–1; 0.305–3.0 (×10–6) W·m–1· °C–1, and 0.095–1.32 (×10–6) m2·s–1 for peak temperature, onset temperature, end temperature, enthalpy, temperature range, specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, respectively. Viscosity values as influenced by concentration and temperature ranged from 25.8–149 mPas for native starch and 41.9–109.6 mPas for modified starches. Hence, this research work provides engineering data that would help in process control, process design and bulk handling of breadfruit starch flour so as to promote its usage in food process industries.

Prevalence of subclinical mastitis, related risk factors, and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria isolated from the milk of dairy cows in KosovoOriginal Paper

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with subclinical mastitis, as well as the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria isolated from the milk of dairy cows in the Republic of Kosovo. The study involved 242 lactating cows from 16 farms. Data were collected through questionnaire interviews, the California mastitis test (CMT), and microbiological analysis. For the detection and identification of bacteria, conventional methods and biochemical tests were used. The disc diffusion method was used to test the susceptibility of isolated bacteria. The prevalence of subclinical mastitis (SCM) at quarter and cow level was 22.3% and 10.5%, respectively. Factors including breed, age, parity, milk production, and lactation stage were significantly correlated with the occurrence of subclinical mastitis in cows (P < 0.05). Major bacterial isolates were Staphylococcus aureus (34%), coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS, 21.3%), Escherichia coli (18.1%), Streptococcus uberis (14.9%), and Streptococcus agalactiae (4.3%). All bacterial isolates showed high susceptibility to gentamicin, tetracycline, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim and low susceptibility to penicillin and streptomycin.

Effect of polyphenol-rich oil palm empty fruit bunch extract on in vitro rumen fermentation, fatty acid profile and microbial populationOriginal Paper

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) extract on in vitro rumen fermentation, fatty acid profile, and microbial population. Rumen fluid was obtained from three female dairy goats fed a similar diet of 60% Napier grass and 40% commercial pellets. The substrate used for the fermentation was a Napier grass and commercial pellet mixture (60 : 40 in dry matter) and the treatment diets were: CON (substrate without OPEFB extract), OPEFB-5 (substrate with 5% of OPEFB extract), OPEFB-10 (substrate with 10% of OPEFB extract). The characteristics of rumen fermentation including pH, fermentation kinetics, total gas production, volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, fatty acid (FA) production, and microbial populations were examined. Results showed that OPEFB supplementation decreased rumen acetate concentration, increased isoacid concentrations as well as palmitic acid concentration. Meanwhile, the population of total bacteria, protozoa, and B. fibrisolvens decreased with the OPEFB supplementation. OPEFB-5 resulted in a moderate amount of acetate, isobutyrate, isovalerate concentration, insoluble fraction of gas production (but degradable), estimated potential gas production as well as B. fibrisolvens population when compared with the control and OPEFB-10 diet. Therefore it is suggested that the supplementation of OPEFB extract at 5% is suitable and practical to be used in ruminant feed without causing an imperative effect on rumen fermentation.

Evaluation of different rooting stimulators and substrates to produce guava clone plants through softwood cuttingsOriginal Paper

The clonal propagation of guava (Psidium guajava L.) is essential to avoid segregation, and its multiplication through cuttings is the easiest and cheapest way to raise a nursery, as other propagation techniques are laborious and need expertise. The current study was planned to evaluate the best rooting stimulators and rooting substrates for guava nursery propagation. In this experiment, the guava-prepared cuttings were treated with rooting stimulators, indole butyric acid (IBA) and paclobutrazol (PB) with concentrations (0, 200, 400, and 600 ppm) and were planted in independent rooting substrates (sand, silt and topsoil) under polytunnels. The results revealed that the highest number of roots, root length and root weight were achieved in cuttings planted in the sand with IBA 400 ppm concentration. In contrast, the highest survival percentage (50%) was obtained in silt substrate with a similar concentration of IBA. However, sand’s lowest and highest concentrations of both rooting hormones produced zero plants. In shooting capacity, maximum leaves (13.6) and sprouts (3.76) were obtained using IBA 400 ppm in silt substrate. The highest sprouting length (6.80 cm) and cutting height (26.2 cm) were attained with sand using PB 200 ppm. In the overall comparison, rooting stimulator IBA 400 ppm and rooting substrate silt performed better than other rooting stimulators and rooting substrates.

Portable analogue-based electronic moisture meter for root-crop chipsShort Communication

Moisture content regulation of root crops is crucial in post-harvest processing operations, not only in the price stipulation but also to avoid aflatoxin contamination. To prolong their storage life, they are processed into dried chips to extend their usability in feed formulations and starches. In this study, we use the capacitance-based method to evaluate the performance of an analogue-based electronic meter for the cassava, sweet potato, and taro chips. The meter was calibrated against the oven-drying method, yielding high R2 values of the different root crops. The established calibration models were validated and revealed high R2 values with 0.9580 for the cassava, 0.9958 for the sweet potato, and 0.9798 for the taro. The trendline equations are y = 59.44x0.56, y = 54.38x0.47, and y = 52.94x0.62, respectively. The results revealed that the moisture meter is capable of reading the moisture content on a weight basis (% MCwb) with accuracy and reliability at specified limits of 8% < x < 69% for the cassava, 15% < x < 59% for the sweet potato, and 9% < x < 57% for the taro. This study presents the performance of a portable analogue-based moisture meter as a reliable and accessible solution to small-scale operations, especially for farmers, offering an on-site rapid moisture content measurement in root crop processing.

Soil water content is critical in plants’ morphological and physiological processes; therefore, water must always be available in appropriate quantities to meet plant growth needs. Soil moisture can be easily detected using sensors, which offer a practical solution for monitoring water content in the soil. However, using sensors for a long time, especially on agricultural land, will reduce sensor accuracy. This research aims to investigate the accuracy of soil moisture sensors during their use for cultivating crops. Using sensors in sandy clay soil can detect soil moisture levels with an accuracy of 93.80% and a precision of 90.81%. A reading deviation (error) of up to 49.74% with a precision level of 75.69% occurred when the sensor had been used for 40 days. Regular cleaning and calibration of the sensor are necessary to obtain accurate soil moisture readings. A copper-based sensor module kit can be used to detect soil moisture with reasonable accuracy during plant growth with a 5–6 weeks harvest time.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo) and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) are major and widespread swine pathogens, both implicated in the porcine respiratory disease complex, which can lead to significant economic losses for pig producers. PCV-2d is currently the most prevalent genotype. Vaccination against these two pathogens helps mitigate their impact on pig health and performance. The use of ready-to-mix or ready-to-use (RTU) vaccines targeting PCV-2a or PCV-2a/b and M. hyo is a common practice. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a novel RTU vaccine containing PCV-2d and M. hyo antigens under experimental conditions. Several challenge trials were conducted using PCV-2a, PCV-2b, PCV-2d, and M. hyo to assess the level of protection conferred against different PCV-2 genotypes and M. hyo, as well as to determine the duration of protection. This study demonstrated that the bivalent PCV-2/M. hyo vaccine induces both early and long-lasting protection against infections caused by M. hyo and PCV-2. In addition, cross-protection against the three major PCV-2 genotypes was confirmed.

Time-kill properties of citrus peel essential oils and constituents against foodborne pathogensOriginal Paper

Growth inhibition and time-kill properties of Hallabong, Redhyang, Cheonhyehyang, and orange peel essential oils against foodborne pathogens were evaluated. Hallabong, Redhyang, Cheonhyehyang, and orange peel essential oils prolonged the lag phase of Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Shigella sonnei, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus for > 24 h and extended the lag phase by 4–24 h against other food poisoning bacteria. Citrus fruit peel essential oil and their constituents after 12 and 24 h of incubation showed almost complete growth inhibition against all foodborne pathogens, except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Hallabong, Redhyang, Cheonhyehyang, and orange peel essential oils exhibited > 40% killing activity against B. cereus, B. subtilis, and S. sonnei, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. vulnificus after 12 and 24 h of incubation. Additionally, B. subtilis showed the highest microbial killing rate of over 16% per hour, followed by Vibrio sp. Hallabong, Redhyang, Cheonhyehyang, and orange peel essential oil are anticipated to replace chemical preservatives against foodborne pathogens.

Genomic diversity characteristics of sheep populations in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia and MontenegroOriginal Paper

Monitoring the genetic diversity in livestock is a critical component for sustainable management of small and endangered breeds. In this paper we follow up the two most often used metrics of genetic diversity, the average inbreeding coefficients (F) and the effective population (Ne) size in 16 sheep breeds from four countries. The analysis was based on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, with about 35 to 49 thousand SNPs and 19 to 98 individuals after quality control. The runs of homozygosity (ROH) method with the cgaTOH software was used to estimate FROH, for three different time points in the past (3, 6 and 12 generations before present). Three methods were implemented to estimate Ne, using the NeEstimator v2, GONE and CurrentNe software for different time spans in the past. The average FROH ranged between 0.001 and 0.035 for 3 generations, 0.003 and 0.059 for 6 generations, 0.005 and 0.074 for 12 generations in the past. The wide range of inbreeding coefficients might be a consequence of different population sizes and breed management strategies in the respective countries. The results for Ne ranged from 7 to 352 for NeEstimator, 25 to 303 for GONE, and 15 to 542 for CurrentNe. Overall, the software showed comparable results for 10 out of 16 breeds, and significantly different results for at least one software for at least one of the methods for 6 out of 16 breeds. These differences show a degree of uncertainty in Ne estimations for certain breeds. Overall, we suggest the continued monitoring of sheep breeds, ideally by routine genotyping in all populations. This monitoring is especially important for small breeds with a greater decline in genetic diversity.

Comparison of the actual release dates of ascospores of the fungus Venturia inaequalis with those predicted by selected simulation models in an apple orchard in Central PolandOriginal Paper

The research was conducted in 2014–2017 in a multi-cultivar apple orchard in the Experimental Orchard of the National Institute of Horticultural Research (IO-PIB) in D±browice near Skierniewice. To determine the actual Venturia inaequalis ascospores release dates, the Burkard spore trap installed in a plot of the McIntosh cv. that was not protected against apple scab was used. Monitoring of ascospore releases was carried out annually, starting from the appearance of numerous colouring (maturing) ascospores in the pseudothecia (usually in the second decade of March) and ending at the second half of June, usually about two weeks after the last release of these spores. The sums of ascospores detected on a given day and their proportion in all ascospores recorded during primary infections were calculated. The obtained results formed the basis for the analysis of forecast indications of the A-scab, Metos (Metos® Pessl Instruments), and RIMpro-Venturia models in connection with meteorological data from the Metos weather station installed in this orchard and to compare them with the actual release dates recorded by the Burkard spore trap. Depending on the year, significant differences were found in the number and intensity of V. inaequalis ascospore releases and in their beginning and end dates.

Corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas L.) resistance to ALS inhibiting and 2,4-D herbicides in Moroccan and Tunisian rainfed wheat fieldsOriginal Paper

Corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas L.) is one of the most problematic weed species, mainly in rainfed Moroccan and Tunisian cereal crops. The overuse of acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting and/or auxinic herbicides led to the spread of corn poppies resistant to both chemical families in this region. In order to identify and understand the selection drivers of resistance, appropriate characterisation of the resistance profile is necessary. Two experiments were carried out: biological sensitivity tests with ALS inhibiting herbicides (tribenuron-methyl and florasulam) and auxinic herbicides (2,4-d) were carried out with populations sampled in the field where the herbicide failure was observed. Bioassay tests confirmed resistance in all studied populations with an average frequency of 75.13, 30.81, 33.17 and 11.52% with tribenuron, florasulam, 2,4-d and florasulam + 2,4-d, respectively. Corn poppy sampled from both countries exhibited similar frequencies within populations for each tested herbicide. The molecular analysis was conducted with next-generation sequencing (Illumina), allowing massive, precise and rapid sequencing regions of the ALS gene carrying resistance codons. Using this technology, ALS mutant alleles were found in all populations at frequencies ranging from 1.4% to 63.3%, with an average of 16.7%. This study highlights the need to elucidate resistance mechanisms to understand herbicide responses and develop effective strategies for managing resistant corn poppy in rainfed cereals as an essential step to maintain the effectiveness of these molecules as long as possible.

The use of parenteral application of ferric carboxymaltose in the prevention of iron deficiency anaemia in suckling pigletsOriginal Paper

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ferric carboxymaltose injection in the prevention of anaemia in suckling piglets. In group A (n = 8), piglets were administered iron in the form of iron carboxymaltose complex (Ferinject®) at a dose of 200 mg i.m. (neck muscle) at the age of 3 days. In group B (n = 8), piglets were given iron in the form of iron dextran (Ferribion®) at a dose of 200 mg i.m. (neck muscle) at the age of 3 days. In group C (n = 8, anaemic control group), iron was not administered until the age of 10 days. During the study, no statistically significant differences were observed in the parameters of red blood cell count or blood plasma iron concentration between the group that received iron carboxymaltase and the group that received iron dextran. The results of haematological and biochemical examinations achieved in our study show that the application of iron carboxymaltase was successful in preventing iron deficiency anaemia in piglets. The results indicate comparable efficacy of iron carboxymaltase and iron dextran.

Effect of Trichoderma harzianum against Fusarium oxysporum in resistant and susceptible tomato cultivarsOriginal Paper

Fusarium wilt disease presents a substantial challenge to tomato production, especially in an open field environment. The peroxidase (POD) activity and total phenolic compounds (TPCs) play a crucial role in measuring the antioxidant capacity of plants. Understanding the variations in the POD and TPC levels during disease-induced stress becomes important for effectively managing Fusarium wilt and enhancing tomato production. This study investigates the impacts of Trichoderma harzianum inoculation through the root drip method on five tomato cultivars. It compares these cultivars to their non-treated counterparts when they are subjected to infection by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol). The results showed that the level of resistance to Fol is based on the specific tomato cultivar. Notably, ‘MT26’ exhibited the lowest disease severity index (DSI), indicating a strong response, whereas ‘CLN3682F’ showed notable susceptibility. Regarding the POD and TPC activity, its exhibition differed in compatibility with the response of each tomato cultivar to Fusarium wilt disease. The resistant cultivars increased the POD activity after the Trichoderma induction before the Fol inoculation, and this activity was further boosted when exposed to disease conditions. Consequently, enhancing the POD and TPC levels during the initial stages could potentially serve as a systemic defence mechanism of tomatoes against the Fusarium wilt disease.

Haemotropic Mycoplasma species in cat blood samples by PCROriginal Paper

Haemotropic mycoplasmas can cause severe anaemia in pets and also have zoonotic potential. The determination of these microorganisms from clinical samples is of critical importance. In this study, the presence of Mycoplasma haemofelis (Mhf), Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum (CMhm), and Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis (CMt) in blood samples collected from 62 cats was investigated. Haemotropic mycoplasmas were identified by PCR amplifying the 16S rRNA gene, and sequence analysis was applied for confirmation and differentiation of the species. Six (9.67%) blood samples were positive for haemotropic mycoplasmas. CMhm and CMt were identified in five (8.06%) samples and one (1.61%) sample, respectively. Mhf was not detected in the samples. Additionally, a co-infection was not observed in any of the cats. It was found that the PCR positivity was not related to the sex or clinical status of the cats. To our knowledge, this is the first report investigating haemotropic mycoplasmas in blood samples from cats in Siirt Province of Türkiye. It is suggested that the data obtained from this study will contribute to clinicians working on pet animal health in this province.

SOD1 and CAT gene expressions in stray and owned animalsOriginal Paper

Dogs and cats are the most common companion animals in urban environments. Some dogs and cats live in stable home settings, receiving regular care. However, stray dogs and cats are exposed to chronic stress due to life on the streets or in shelters. Stress is correlated with oxidative stress. The dysregulation of redox balance can lead to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which promote cellular and molecular damage. In this study, the blood samples were collected from 150 female animals (90 dogs and 60 cats) to isolate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Total RNA was extracted from PBMCs and subjected to reverse transcription. The expression levels of SOD1 and CAT were quantified using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Compared with those in stray animals, the SOD1 expression levels were significantly higher (P < 0.01), and the CAT expression levels were non-significantly lower in owned animals. These findings suggest that the expression of antioxidant defence genes varied between owned and stray animals. Thus, oxidative stress regulation is dependent on environmental conditions and lifestyle in companion species.

Determination of aflatoxin M1 presence and concentration in Van Herby cheeseOriginal Paper

Aflatoxins are considered the most toxic secondary metabolites of concern to food safety due to their wide distribution and high toxicity in foods and feeds. The aim of this study is to identify the prevalence of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in Van Herby cheeses (brined/dry salted). A total of 90 brined and dry salted Van Herby cheese samples offered for retail sale were analysed. The AFM1 level in the samples was determined by the chromatographic [High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)/Fluorescent Detection (FLD)] method. Brined Van Herby cheese samples contained AFM1 in amounts ranging from < LOD to 0.573 ng·g–1 with a mean of 0.165 ± 0.206 ng·g–1, while dry salted Van Herby cheese samples contained < LOD to 0.017 ng·g–1 AFM1. The analysis of the prevalence of AFM1 in brined and dry salted Van Herby cheese samples was 17.78% (n = 8) and 2.22% (n = 1), respectively. In Van Herby cheese production, standardisation, quality improvement and food safety control procedures need to be used effectively and disseminated. In addition to good agricultural and storage practices to prevent mycotoxin formation, measures must be taken to prevent aflatoxin contamination in animal feed. These applications and systems will provide positive contributions in terms of total quality, nutrients and public health, as well as different advantages such as technological superiority.

Modelling for a land suitability analysis of rice terraces on the upland area using the geographic information system (GIS) and analytical hierarchical process (AHP)Original Paper

Rice fields are the main source of rice production. Rice field expansion is one way to increase rice production. Rice field expansion activities for the upland area in Indonesia are often overlooked due to limited information about the availability of suitable land. In upland areas, rice terraces are often found. Until now, there has been no guideline for determining the suitable location of rice terraces on upland areas. The purpose of this study was to develop a land suitability assessment model for rice terraces using geographic information system (GIS) and the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) on upland areas like the Lake Toba catchment area. There were four important factors for selecting rice terracing plantations: spatial planning, slope, texture, and distance from the river (hydrology). By using the AHP method, a rating has been assigned to each theme layer. To create the suitability map for rice terraces in a GIS setting, all the thematic layers were combined into a single layer using the weighted overlay approach. The results showed that 37.78% were highly suitable, 18.88% were moderately suitable, and 36.95% were marginally suitable for rice terraces. The model can be used to determine the location of rice terraces on upland areas with a high accuracy of about 93%.
