Estimation of genetic parameters for horn traits and essential economic traits in Inner Mongolia Cashmere goatsOriginal PaperLei Zhang, Fenghong Wang, Lingtian Zhang, Fengting Zhang, Hongfu Liu, Libing He, Jinquan Li, Rui SuCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2021, 66(6):211-216 | DOI: 10.17221/212/2020-CJAS Horns are unique cranial appendages in ruminants, and horn traits are useful in the indirect selection of growth traits in goat. However, genetic parameters for horns have not been estimated in Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats. In this study, we collected pedigree information with 7 632 records from 2 049 Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats during 2017 to 2019 to study horn base interval (HBI), horn length (HL) and horn base circumference (HBC), as well as four essential economic traits including cashmere length (CL), staple length (SL), cashmere weight (CW) and live body weight (LBW). Genetic parameters and (co)variances were estimated by a multivariate animal model, average information restriction maximum likelihood method in WOMBAT software. The estimates of heritability for HBI, HL, HBC, CL, SL, CW and LBW were 0.31, 0.25, 0.30, 0.10, 0.34, 0.21 and 0.12, respectively, indicating moderate heritability of horn traits in Cashmere goats. We found out that coefficients of genetic correlations between three horn traits were -0.31 to 0.78, while those between three horn traits and four economic traits ranged from -0.05 to 0.52. Strong genetic correlations were observed between horn traits (HBC-HL, HBC-HBI). In addition, a strong phenotypic correlation was revealed for horn and economic traits (HL-LBW). In summary, this study uncovered genetic characteristics and relationships for horn traits in Cashmere goats, which will facilitate the breeding practices of Cashmere goats by providing easier measurement than common economic traits. |
Effect of fat levels in early phase on growth performance and meat characteristics in twin lambsOriginal PaperWenjuan Li, Hui Tao, Tao Ma, Naifeng Zhang, Kaidong Deng, Qiyu DiaoCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2021, 66(6):217-224 | DOI: 10.17221/177/2020-CJAS This experiment aims to study the effects of dietary fat level during the suckling period on growth performance and meat characteristics in twin lambs. Thirty pairs of male twin Hu lambs were divided into two groups, namely high fat (HF) and normal fat (NF). Lambs in the HF group were fed milk replacer and starter containing 26.89% and 5.07% of fat, whereas those in the NF group were fed milk replacer and starter containing 15.15% and 2.80% of fat, respectively, from eight to 60 days of age. From 60 to 120 days of age, all lambs were fed a starter feed containing 2.80% fat. The results showed that lambs fed HF diet had higher body weight (12.78 kg versus 11.63 kg, P = 0.020), average daily gain (162.4 g/day versus 141.1 g/day, P = 0.019), apparent digestibility of organic matter (P = 0.018) and gross energy (P < 0.001). No difference was observed between HF and NF group in slaughter performance during eight to 60 days of age. Lambs fed HF diet had higher body weight at 120 days of age (P = 0.035). However, no difference was observed in nutrient digestibility, slaughter performance or meat quality at 120 days of age. In summary, the HF diet in the suckling period showed long-lasting beneficial effects on the growth performance of lambs. |
Study on the influence of dietary sea buckthorn meal on nutritional properties of laying hen eggsOriginal PaperArabela Elena Untea, Tatiana Dumitra Panaite, Iulia Varzaru, Raluca Paula Turcu, Teodor Gavris, Alexandra LupuCzech J. Sci., 2021, 66(6):225-234 | DOI: 10.17221/239/2020-CJAS The study aimed to evaluate the transfer of bioactive compounds from sea buckthorn meal (SBM) supplement to eggs and the effect on lipid quality and peroxidation process. Thirty-two-week-old TETRA SL laying hens were allocated to two dietary treatments, 30 birds each (15 replicate pens). The control diet (C) contained a maize-soybean diet, and the experimental diet contained the previous C diet with 2% of maize replaced with SBM. Thirty-six eggs from each group were collected in order to determine the quality parameters at the end of the experiment. The antioxidant profile of SBM showed that the phytoadditive is a valuable source of vitamin E, xanthophylls and polyphenols. The inclusion of 2% of SBM in the experimental diet led to a more than 25% increase of vitamin E and an almost 50% increase of xanthophylls compared to the control. The markers specific to the coronary risk decreased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control, showing a beneficial effect of dietary SBM on the quality of yolk lipids. The bioactive compounds detected in egg yolk showed a significant (P < 0.05) improvement of the antioxidant profile, the rate of vitamin (A and E), carotenoid (lutein and zeaxanthin) and mineral (iron and zinc) deposition increased after dietary SBM inclusion. Regarding the lipid peroxidation parameters, the dietary SBM inclusion acted in the first phase of the lipid peroxidation process by inhibiting the formation of primary oxidation products (hydroperoxides and conjugated dienes). In conclusion, the sea buckthorn supplementation of the laying hen diet improved the bioactive compound concentrations in eggs and delayed the oxidation process of yolk during storage. |

Sci., 2021, 66(7):235-250 | DOI: 10.17221/163/2020-CJAS The review focuses on breeding practices aimed at improving resistance to diseases and health disorders that are associated with better efficiency, welfare and longevity of cows. It is commonly known that diseases like mastitis, foot and claw disorders, metabolic and reproductive issues seriously violate dairy cows' well-being. The cause of prevailing health and fertility deterioration has been the intensive selection merely based on higher milk production starting after the Second World War. Therefore since the last decades of the 20th-century genetic selection programs have been increasingly focused on increasing resistance to diseases and improving fertility traits using several omics techniques, including genomics. The first steps for maintaining the goal of genetic breeding for disease resistance were the introduction of disease data collection at national levels followed by an elaboration of gene evaluation systems. It was proved that diseases exhibit additive genetic variability exploitable in the breeding. For greater breeding efficiency, the indicator traits are used, which were strongly genetically correlated with health traits, have higher heritability, and above all, are usually easily measurable at low cost. Genome-wide association studies have identified several polymorphisms associated with disease liability that could also be used for speeding up selection efforts. Sci., 2021, 66(7):251-261 | DOI: 10.17221/265/2020-CJAS The aim of this study was to evaluate the effective population size based on linkage disequilibrium and the trend of inbreeding derived from runs of homozygosity (ROH) in the Slovak Spotted cattle. The ROH segments longer than 4 Mb were then analysed to identify selection signals. Eighty-five individuals were genotyped using the ICBF International Dairy and Beef chip (dams of sires) and Illumina BovineSNP50 BeadChip (sires). The ROH segments > 1 Mb occurred most often in the autosomal genome with an average number of 16.75 ± 7.23. The ROH segments > 16 Mb covering 0.41% of the genome pointed to the long-term effort of breeders to reduce inbreeding in the population of Slovak Spotted cattle. However, the average observed heterozygosity indicated a decrease in overall diversity in the current population. The decrease of heterozygosity per generation also confirmed the estimates of historical and recent effective population size (a decrease of 6.88 animals per generation). The predicted current effective population size was 58 animals. Twenty-one regions across 12 different autosomes were fixed due to the high selection pressure. Within these genomic regions were identified various genes associated with reproduction (SLC9C1, PTPN12), milk production (IGF1, ABCG2), beef production (IFRD1, PTPN4), developmental processes (FMNL2, GLI2), immune system (CD96, CSK) and coat colour (KIT). These selection signals detected in the genome of Slovak Spotted cattle confirm the constant effort of breeders to preserve the dual-purpose nature of this breed. |
Relationship between direct and maternal genetic effects on weaning weight of Limousin and crossbred beef calvesOriginal PaperFerenc Szabó, Judit Márton, Eszter Szabó, Márton Szűcs, Szabolcs BeneCzech J. Sci., 2021, 66(7):262-270 | DOI: 10.17221/298/2020-CJAS Population genetic parameters, direct and maternal breeding value, the genetic trend in the weaning weight of Limousin beef cattle calves were estimated in the period 1992-2019. Data of 19 764 calves (15 437 purebred Limousin and 4 327 crossbred) were computed. Crossbred calves were sired by Limousin breeding bulls from Simmental dams. Calves in question came from 37 herds and from 240 sires in Hungary. DFREML and MTDFREML software was used for the estimation of population genetic parameters, BLUP animal model for breeding value estimation. Weighted linear regression model was used for describing genetic trends. The maternal heritability (h2m ± SE = 0.29 ± 0.03; 0.32 ± 0.10) was approximately half of the direct heritability (h2d ± SE = 0.63 ± 0.05; 0.68 ± 0.12). The direct maternal covariance is negative, the direct maternal genetic correlation coefficients (rdm ± SE = -0.80 ± 0.03 and -0.96 ± 0.07) are strong negative. The Spearman rank correlation between direct and maternal breeding value in purebred population is moderate and negative (rrank = -0.33; P < 0.01), in crossbred population it is strong and negative (rrank = -0.99; P < 0.01). According to direct and maternal breeding values of sires, the genetic trend of the weaning weight of purebred and crossbred Limousin calves appeared stagnant during the examined period (b = +0.01 kg/year to +0.19 kg/year). |

Sci., 2021, 66(7):271-280 | DOI: 10.17221/225/2020-CJAS The purpose of this experiment is to study the relationship between the difference in production performance between Sichuan White (SC) rabbits and New Zealand (NZL) rabbits and the diversity of caecal flora. Twelve pregnant SC rabbits and 12 NZL female rabbits were selected for this experiment. After delivery, the young rabbits were divided into two groups according to breeds, each group had 30 replicates, and each replicate had one rabbit. During the experiments, these rabbits were kept in the same room, and the temperature in the room was controlled at 12-25 °C, with a 16-hour light cycle every 24 hours. The nutritional composition of the feed and other environmental conditions were consistent. On the 59th day of the experiment, the caecum contents of the two groups of young rabbits were collected. The results showed that the survival rate of the SC rabbit group was higher than that of the NZL rabbit group, and the diarrhoea rate and average daily gain were lower than those of the NZL rabbit group (P < 0.05). The results of high-throughput sequencing of the 16S gene showed that compared with the NZL rabbit group, the relative abundance of Bacteroides increased, and the abundance of harmful flora Verrucomicrobia and Proteobacteria decreased (P < 0.05). Functional analysis of the microflora showed that the relative abundance of carbohydrate metabolism genes in the SC rabbit group was higher than in the NZL rabbit group. In conclusion, compared with the NZL rabbits, the SC rabbits have a more optimized intestinal flora structure and lower abundance of harmful bacteria. Moreover, the intestinal health level of SC rabbits is improved, and the tolerance to roughage of SC rabbits is increased. |
Combinations of Trolox and ascorbic acid have a beneficial effect on in vitro maturation of pig oocytesOriginal PaperIleana Miclea, Marius ZăhanCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2021, 66(9):359-367 | DOI: 10.17221/253/2020-CJAS Abstract: The poor in vitro development of pig oocytes and embryos has been blamed on oxidative stress. We sought to find out if combinations of Trolox (T), a synthetic and cell-permeable derivative of vitamin E, and ascorbic acid (AA) could improve the maturation rates of in vitro cultured pig oocytes. Pig oocytes underwent maturation for 44-45 h in medium M 199 supplemented with 0 μM T + 0 μM AA, 100 μM T + 250 μM AA, 300 μM T + 250 μM AA, 100 μM T + 750 μM AA or 300 μM T + 750 μM AA. These combinations were chosen based on previous research conducted in our laboratory and on the available literature. After maturation, several parameters were assessed: cumulus oophorus expansion, oocyte viability (based on the presence of metabolic activity versus membrane damage), extrusion of the first polar body, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), pronucleus formation, and embryo development after fertilization. All antioxidant combinations significantly improved cumulus expansion and formation of the first polar body. The best was 300 μM T + 250 μM AA for the first characteristic and 300 μM T + 750 μM AA for the second. Antioxidant presence in the maturation media increased the percentages of viable oocytes but not significantly. MMP was not significantly modified by the addition of antioxidant combinations. We also found that a low concentration of T (100 µM) mixed with a high concentration of AA (750 µM) in the oocyte maturation media led to significantly higher rates of both female and male pronuclei formation and also enhanced embryo development to the morula stage. Therefore, we recommend this combination to improve the in vitro maturation media of pig oocytes. |

(Prague), 2021, 48(1):1-11 | DOI: 10.17221/45/2020-HORTSCI Mediterranean farming is facing increasing periods of water shortage and, in the coming decades, the water reduction is expected to exert the most adverse impact upon growth and productivity. This study was performed to assess the response of the physico-biochemical quality parameters of mango fruits to different doses of irrigation in a Mediterranean subtropical area in Spain. During two-monitoring seasons, trees were subjected to deficit-irrigation strategies receiving 33, 50, and 75% of a crop evapotranspiration (ETC), and a control at 100% ETC. According to the findings and respect to control, the yield was reduced in 8, 11, and 20% for the water-stressed trees at 75, 50, and 33% ETC, respectively, producing smaller fruits in line with the amount of applied irrigation. However, the water-stressed fruits significantly enhanced their quality, in particular at 33% ETC, with regards to the content of the health-promoting phytochemicals (total soluble solids, vitamin C, and β-carotenoids). Thus, sustainable water management without a detrimental effect on the yield could be possible, and farmers should be encouraged to adapt to the environmental constraints, producing improved quality fruits. |
Effects of LED and HPS lighting on the growth, seedling morphology and yield of greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbersOriginal PaperJacek Dyśko, Stanisław KaniszewskiHort. Sci. (Prague), 2021, 48(1):22-29 | DOI: 10.17221/4/2020-HORTSCI In an experiment with tomato and cucumber transplants, light units equipped with purpose-built LED arrays were compared with HPS sodium lamps with a power of 600 W and a voltage of 230 V. For both the LED and HPS lamps, the same PAR radiation level was used at the plant height, which was about 70-80 μmol/m2/s in conditions without daylight. The supplementary lighting was carried out for 8 to 24 hours and was switched on during the day when the solar radiation outside the greenhouse was lower than 200 W/m2. The supplementary lighting with the LED and HPS lamps did not have a significant impact on the growth of the tomato and cucumber seedlings and the fresh and dry mass of the tomato and cucumber plants. The plants grown without the additional artificial lighting were significantly smaller in height, had fewer leaves, a smaller spread and produced lower fresh and dry weights. The tomato and cucumber plants grown under the LED lamps had a higher chlorophyll index than those grown under the HPS lamps and without any lighting. The supplementary lighting with the LED lamps increased the early yield of the tomatoes compared to the HPS and control plants but has no effect on the early yield of the cucumbers. Both the LED and HPS lighting significantly increased the total and marketable yield of the tomatoes and cucumbers. |

Sci. (Prague), 2021, 48(2):63-72 | DOI: 10.17221/106/2020-HORTSCI Rootstocks play a vital role in regulating the environmental adaptability and controlling the growth and development of apple trees. M9T337, an excellent apple rootstock widely used in commercial orchards, could confer dwarf tree architectures, early fruiting and suitability for high-density planting. However, the rooting ability of M9T3337 is low when it is vegetatively propagated, and researchers have not yet established an efficient micropropagation system. The present study systematically evaluated the multiplication in adventitious shoots and the in vitro formation of adventitious roots to determine the effects of the culture media and plant growth regulators of M9T337 and a rapid micropropagation system was developed. For the shoot multiplication, the highest multiplication index of 3.93 was obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with 2.0 mg/L 6-BA, 0.1 mg/L NAA and 0.3 mg/L GA3 from 12 combinations of 6-BA and NAA. Stronger and taller adventitious shoots were grown on MS supplemented with 1.8 mg/L 6-BA and 0.5 mg/L NAA. The optimal media with 100% rooting was obtained using 1/2 MS supplemented with 0.3 mg/L IBA or MS supplemented with 0.6 mg/L IBA for the rooting induction, resulting in mean rooting numbers of 13.00 and 11.33, respectively. Additionally, the effect on rooting of adding 0.3 mg/L IBA or not on the 1/2 MS and MS media was compared; the results suggested that an appropriate IBA concentration was the key to successful rooting. The rooted plantlets were acclimatised in a shaded greenhouse with an 84% survival rate. The established micropropagation system could be used for the rapid propagation of M9T337 for commercial production. |

(Prague), 2021, 48(2):73-79 | DOI: 10.17221/158/2019-HORTSCI The aim of our research was to determine the effect of short pruning on the productive and vegetative characteristics of peach trees. The research was conducted on two cultivars, 'Redhaven' and 'Fayette'. Three short pruning treatments were applied, with heading of the bearing branches at 20, 30, and 40 cm in length and a control, without heading. The following characteristics were evaluated: the growth of the TCSA, the number of thinned fruitlets, the number of fruit and yield per tree, the average weight of the fruits and the diameter of the fruits. Based on our research, we made several observations: the pruning method did not affect the growth of the TCSA; the number of thinned fruitlets decreased with a reduction in the length of the bearing branches; the number of fruits and yield per tree decreased with a reduction in the length of the bearing branches. A higher average fruit weight and percentage of fruits with a bigger diameter were calculated from the trees with the short pruning, but with a different share depending on the cultivar. |

(Prague), 2021, 48(2):80-89 | DOI: 10.17221/99/2020-HORTSCI The vigorous behaviour of a rootstock modifies the growth and yield of a plant variety or hybrid, altering the plant nutritional requirements. The purpose of this work was to study four ratios of NO3-/NH4+ (100/0, 92/8, 85/15 and 80/20%) over the growth, leaf anatomy and yield of grafted and ungrafted tomato plants. We used a fully randomised experimental block design with factorial arrangement of 2 × 4 (grafted and ungrafted plants and four ratios of NO3-/NH4+), on eight treatments in total with four replicates each, using Tukey's mean comparison test (P ≤ 0.05). The rootstock was 'Silex' by Fito Seeds, with the 'El Arrojado' graft (variety) by Gene Seeds. The graft produced an increase in growth, dry biomass production, stomatal density, trichome number, epidermal cell density, fruits per plant, average fruit weight, fruit size and total soluble solids, in comparison with the ungrafted tomato plants. In most of the assessed variables, the grafted tomato plants gave their best response at an 85/15% NO3-/NH4+ ratio; while the ungrafted plants performed better at a 92/8% NO3-/NH4+ ratio. The response of the grafted plants to the different NO3-/NH4+ ratios suggests that grafting induces tolerance to NH4+. |
The effects of K+-deficiency on H2O2 dynamics and sucrose in tomatoOriginal PaperXiaoming Zhao, Ning Zhang, Xin Liu, Jing JiangHort. Sci. (Prague), 2021, 48(2):90-97 | DOI: 10.17221/103/2020-HORTSCI Potassium (K+) deficiency inhibits the transport of photosynthetic products and causes severe crop yield losses. However, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we used two tomato lines 081018 (K+-deficiency-sensitive) and 081034 (K+-deficiency-tolerant), showing tolerance to K+ deficiency to investigate the relationship between the H2O2 and sucrose in the tomato under K+-deficiency. The H2O2 accumulation was increased by the low K+ condition (0.5 mM) after 8 h in 081018. The enzymes related to the metabolism of H2O2 were decreased, and more malondialdehyde (MDA) was produced. After 24 h, the sucrose content had accumulated significantly in the leaves, however, it was deficient in the roots, and the expression level of the sucrose transporters (SUT1) was inhibited. In 081034, the activity of antioxidant enzymes was increased under K+-deficiency, and then the H2O2 subsequently returned to the control treatment (4 mM) levels and did not produce more MDA. The sucrose content was not significantly different from the control treatment after 24 h. The expression of SUT1 was not suppressed. These results suggested that the H2O2 dynamics played different roles in the two different strains. The transportation of sucrose was suppressed by the H2O2 from the leaf (source) to the root (sink) in 081018, and unrestricted by the advantageous reactive oxygen species dynamics capacity in 081034. |

(Prague), 2021, 48(3):117-125 | DOI: 10.17221/64/2020-HORTSCI One-year-old 'Florida Prince' cultivar peach trees grafted on a 'Nemaguard' rootstock were planted in the early spring of 2018 at the Centre of Agricultural Research and Experiments, Minia University, located in southwest Egypt. The trees were planted 5 × 5 m in a randomised complete block design with four replicates, with ten trees in each replicate. In the late spring, two different pruning systems were applied; traditional open centre (OC) and de-branched top trees (DBT). The OC trees were headed at 80 cm above the ground. DBT is a modification of the OC, but no heading was undertaken and the new shoot growth arising from the 20 cm at the top of the plant were removed. Before the winter pruning took place, measurements were taken on the upper two opposite branches. The average length and diameter values of the upper two opposite branches at the top of the trees trained to the OC were higher than those trained with the DBT. In contrast, the distance between the upper two branches (25 cm) at the top of the DBT trees was significantly higher. Likewise, the values of the crotch angles (48°) and the number of branches (81 of 100 branches) that showed desired crotch angles (more than 40°) were remarkably higher in the trees trained with the DBT. After the winter pruning took place, the DBT trees were higher than the OC trees. Additionally, the trees trained with the DBT had low pruning costs and took less time. Moreover, the pruning wood weight of the DBT trees was about half of the pruning wood weight of the OC trees. In conclusion, the DBT training system showed the desired impact on the crotch angles and the tested pruning characteristics. |
Generative propagation and fertilisation of Stipeae species - wild grasses with ornamental potentialOriginal PaperAnna Kapczyńska, Bożena StodolakHort. Sci. The appropriate plant selection is crucial for the subsequent survival and growth of plants in grassy gardens. The aim of the experiment was to assess the influence of seed age (1-3-year old seeds) on the germination of three Stipeae species: Eriocoma occidentalis subsp. californica, Stipa pulcherrima and Hesperostipa curtiseta. The seed weight and germination percentage showed a decline over a period of seed storage. There was 31-84% (depending on species) loss in germinability of 3-year old seeds in comparison to 1-year old seeds. After germination, plants were repotted and treated with Osmocote (a slow-release fertiliser, N15 + P10 + K12). The results indicated that fertilisation significantly increased the number of roots, stems, leaf length, leaf dry weight, chlorophylls and proline content. None of the tested species flowered in the year of sowing but in the next growing season. Plants fertilised in the previous year formed more and of better quality inflorescence stems. |

Aceria granati is a monophagous gall mite damaging the leaves of Punica granatum. This gall mite was present in one locality in Nitra only and was probably imported from Hungary via the plant trade. This is the first observation of an Aceria granati occurrence in Slovakia. |

A range of variations regarding the bloom colour, bloom size, bloom type, flowering incidence, plant size was noticed. The evaluation showed the decorative value and considerable frost resistance of the varieties 'Double White', 'Dunwich Rose', 'Frühlingsduft', 'Frühlingsgold', 'Frühlingsmorgen', 'Karl Forster', 'Mon Amie Claire', 'Red Nelly', 'Stanwell Perpetual', 'Suzanne', and 'William III'. The varieties studied can be used for decorative purposes in urban landscapes in the northern part of Ukraine. |
Response of sweet cherry buds and twigs to temperature changes - evaluated by the determination of the degradation and synthesis of sucroseOriginal PaperKlaus-Peter Götz, Frank-Michael ChmielewskiHort. (Prague), 2021, 48(4):149-157 | DOI: 10.17221/123/2020-HORTSCI This study was undertaken to determine the degradation and synthesis of sucrose (Suc) in sweet cherry buds and the twig tissue response to a sequence of environmental temperature changes (cold (orchard) - warm (controlled temperature of ∼22 °C) - cold (orchard)). The results of two years' (2016, 2017) findings were compared with the buds of trees and the buds of twigs in November/December in northeast Germany. The Suc content in the buds of trees and the buds of twigs under natural conditions was stable. Temperatures of ∼22 °C resulted in a significant (Suc) degradation (62%, from 39 to 15 mg/g DW) in the buds of twigs after 21 days (day of the year (DOY) 340). The significant re-synthesis (66%, to 25 mg/g DW after 21 days, DOY 361) in the orchard is noteworthy, and highlights the Suc value as a cryoprotective saccharide. The marked changes in the Suc, glucose, and fructose contents of the twigs exposed to a cold-warm-cold sequence (< DOY 319, DOY 319-340, DOY 340-361), lead to the conclusion that this adaptation is the result of tissue- and cold-specific sucrose invertases/synthases. The effect of low-temperature-active enzymes explains the role of Suc in the buds of trees during the winter rest. When using twigs for plant physiological examinations during the winter rest, results on a metabolite level should be considered when drawing conclusions concerning the overall tree physiology. |

To study the effects of day and night temperature differences on the strawberry sugar quality, an experiment using climate chambers was conducted. Five different differences between the day and night temperatures (DIF) were set, which were 6 °C (28 °C/22 °C, day/night temperature), 8 °C (29 °C/21 °C), 10 °C (30 °C/20 °C), 12 °C (31 °C/19 °C), 14 °C (32 °C/18 °C). The results showed the following indices peaked with a DIF of 12 °C, including the photosynthesis rate, glucose content, fructose content, sucrose content, soluble sugar content and sugar metabolic enzyme activity. The respiration rate increased with the DIF during the day and decreased with the DIF at night. The root dry weight peaked at a DIF of 10 °C, the stolon dry weight peaked at a DIF of 8 °C and the leaf dry weight peaked at a DIF of 6 °C; however, the fruit dry weight reached maximum values at a DIF of 12 °C. The Grey correlation analysis showed that the most important factor in our experiment affecting the fructose content was the sucrose phosphate synthase; however, for the sucrose, glucose, and soluble sugars, the most important factor was the photosynthesis. We found that a DIF of 12 °C (31 °C/19 °C, day/night temperature) was the most suitable for strawberry growth, especially for the sugar content accumulation. |
Effect of growing location on anthocyanin content and total antioxidant capacity of haskap (Lonicera caerulea L.) berry: A preliminary investigationOriginal PaperAruma B.H.K. De Silva, H.P. We investigated whether the latitude has any impact on the anthocyanin accumulation and total antioxidant capacity in the haskap berry. The measured quality attributes were compared with that of the blueberry. Haskap 'Aurora' berries were collected from Yukon, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia in Canada, and blueberries were collected from Nova Scotia. Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G), the most abundant anthocyanin of haskap berry, the total anthocyanins, the total polyphenols, the soluble solids (°Brix), the pH value, the total antioxidant capacity, and the moisture content were determined. The results revealed that the total anthocyanin, total phenolic content, and antioxidant capacity of the haskap range between 88 to 273 mg C3GE/100 g fresh weight (FW), 256 to 442 mg GAE/100 g of FW, and 27 to 52 µmol TE/g FW, respectively. The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS) analysis revealed that the C3G contained in the haskap berry is highly dependent on the harvest stage. Among the samples, the haskap berry harvested on July 19, 2019, from the Yukon had the highest C3G content. Interestingly, the total anthocyanin content of the haskap berry is comparable to that of the lowbush blueberry, but higher than the highbush blueberry. A systematic multi-year experiment employing many cultivars and growing locations is recommended to better understand the latitude effect. |

Sci., 2020, 66(2):70-79 | DOI: 10.17221/149/2019-JFS Northern forests of Iran are among the most important plant communities in Iran due to their dynamic and diverse vegetation composition and fertile soils. There is little information about carbon stocks of these forests. In the present study, above- and belowground carbon stocks of trees, litter, herbs and soil organic carbon stock at three selected sites of these forests were calculated using random plots and non-destructive sampling. The FAO method was used for carbon estimation of trees and Walkley-Black method was used for soil carbon stock and carbon coefficient was estimated directly. The results showed that both the tree carbon stocks and soil carbon stocks increased from east to west with increasing altitude, showing significant differences. The results also indicate that these forests have a high carbon sequestration potential as a green belt across the northern slopes of the Alborz Mountains, when the contribution of the aboveground section was greater than that of the belowground section (soil and roots) at all sites. |

The aim of this study is to evaluate ecological capability of five proposed sites including Golestan National Park, Afra Takhteh Yew Forest, Kojoor Forest, Cypress Woodland of Hassanabad-e Chalous, Lomer forest along the Hyrcanian region from east to west, using both Boolean and fuzzy logic and to compare these two models. A total of 10 important factors including slope, aspect, elevation, soil types, soil erosion, soil transformation, canopy cover, the value of species, distance to streams and climate were investigated in this study. The results show that elevation, slope and aspect have the most important role in the classification of the studied area. The results of model validation with field data indicate that the fuzzy gamma model shows the better assessment, accuracy and reliability compared to the Boolean model. Based on the obtained results we suggest the fuzzy-based operation model in sustainable protection planning in the Hyrcanian Forests. |

During the past centuries, it has been extensively introduced into artificial monocultures, but is currently experiencing a number of problems related to climate change and extreme droughts. There is a large-scale disintegration of its stands and, in addition to its replacement by other native trees, it is possible to use a wide range of introduced species of the same genus. The aim of the investigation was to compare production parameters, structure and diversity of pine stands at the age of 35 years in school Arboretum of Faculty of Forestry and Wood Science in Central Bohemia (320 m a.s.l., medium rich habitats, water deficit site). Seven species of pine were compared: ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex C. Hawson), Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi Balf.), black pine (Pinus nigra J.F.Arnold), eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.), Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Douglas), Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce Griseb.) and the only native Scots pine. The results showed that significantly (P < 0.001) highest height, diameter at breast height and mean stem volume were achieved in Pinus ponderosa and P. strobus stands, while these parameters were lowest in P. peuce and P. nigra. In contrast, the lowest stand volume was calculated for P. strobus (112 m3.ha-1) due to the lower stand density, while the highest production was again in P. ponderosa (430 m3.ha-1). In terms of structural variability, the highest diversity was found in P. jeffreyi and P. peuce. The introduced pine species, especially P. ponderosa, could therefore play an important role in terms of production and economic potential and even replace native P. sylvestris on suitable sites. |
Green space trends in small towns of Kyiv region according to EOS Land Viewer - a case studyOriginal PaperVasyl Yukhnovskyi, Olha ZibtsevaJ. For. The lack of green space inventory in small towns in the Kyiv region has prompted the use of express analysis provided by the EOS Land Viewer platform, which allows obtaining an instantaneous distribution of the urban and suburban territories by a number of vegetative indices and in recent years - by scene classification. The purpose of the study is to determine the current state and dynamics of the ratio of vegetation and built-up cover of the territories of small towns in Kyiv region with establishing the rating of towns by eco-balance of territories. The distribution of the territory of small towns by the most common vegetation index NDVI, as well as by SAVI, which is more suitable for areas with vegetation coverage of less than 30%, has been monitored. We found that the share of dense vegetation in the territory of towns increased on average from 2.4 to 49.3% during 1990-2018. The share of the vegetation cover of moderate density decreased from 40.8 to 27.1%, and of sparse one from 37.5 to 14.9%. High variability of these indicators is noted. The share of open area for small towns decreased on average from 15.4 to 3.8%. The vegetation-free areas in 1990, 2005 and 2018 accounted for 3.8, 2.6 and 4.4%, respectively, which may indicate the intensive expansion of built-up areas over the last fifteen years. The development of urban greening systems was completely individual and depended not only on natural conditions but also on the manifestations of anthropogenic activity. The reduction of the ecological balance of the territories of small towns as of 2018 took place in the following sequence - Irpin, Tarashcha, Boiarka, Rzhyshchiv, Kaharlyk, Skvyra, Myronivka, Yahotyn, Uzyn. |
Assessment of pine aboveground biomass within Northern Steppe of Ukraine using Sentinel-2 dataOriginal PaperViktoriia Lovynska, Yuriy Buchavyi, Petro Lakyda, Svitlana Sytnyk, Yuriy Gritzan, Roman SendziukJ. Sci., 2020, 66(8):339-348 | DOI: 10.17221/28/2020-JFS The present study offers the results of the spectral characteristics, calculated vegetative indices and biophysical parameters of pine stands of the Northern Steppe of Ukraine region obtained using Sentinel-2 data. For the development of regression models with the prediction of the biomass of pine forests using the obtained spectral characteristics, we used the results of the assessment of the aboveground biomass by the method of field surveys. The results revealed the highest correlation relations between the parameters of the general and trunk biomass with the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and transformed vegetation index (TVI) vegetative indices and the fraction of absorbed photosynthetic active radiation (FARAP) and fraction of vegetation cover (FCOVER) biophysical parameters. To generate the models of determining the forest aboveground biomass (AGB), we used both the single- and two-factor models, the most optimum of which were those containing the NDVI predictor separately and in combination with the FCOVER predictor. The predicted values of the total AGB for the mentioned models equalled 32.5 to 236.3 and 39.9 to 253.4 t.ha-1. We performed mapping of the AGB of pine stands of the Northern Steppe using multi-spectral Sentinel-2 images, particularly the spectral characteristics of their derivatives (vegetative indices, biophysical parameters). This study demonstrated promising results for conducting an AGB-mapping of pine woods in the studied region using free-access resources. |
Seedling dynamics and community forecast for disturbed forests of the Western Himalayas: a multivariate analysisOriginal PaperAfsheen KhanJ. For. Sci., 2020, 66(9):383-392 | DOI: 10.17221/101/2020-JFS The present study focuses on the forest structure of highly disturbed sites in Western Himalayan regions in Pakistan. In this study, the regeneration potential of conifer species is a key point for the assessment of future conifer status in disturbed environment by employing multivariate techniques. The forests are composed of four conifer species Pinus wallichiana A. B. Jacks, Pinus roxburghii Sarg., Cedrus deodara (Roxb.) G. Don, and Abies pindrow (Royle ex D. Don) Royle., associated with broadleaved species Quercus baloot Griffith, Quercus dilatata Raf., and Aesculus indica (Wall. ex Cambess.) Hook. Cluster analysis shows five groups when Pinus wallichiana (PW) forms the largest group, incorporates with other conifers and broadleaved species and in some cases it overlaps with its subgroups forming a pure larger group. Similarly in DCA (ordination) overlapping exists in all the axes while elevation is the only variable that shows a highly significant (P < 0.001) correlation with conifers. Cedrus deodara (CD) with Quercus baloot (QB) and Aesculus indica (AI) shares a significant (P < 0.05) correlation in the same habitat while there is no correlation between the remaining conifers. It is anticipated that overlapping in cluster analysis and ordination and non-significant correlations in cluster analysis and ordination are due to the highly disturbed nature of the sites. It is also suggested that seedling recruitment and development are highly affected due to the anthropogenic disturbance. Therefore, proper maintenance of the forest, proper management and conservational practice should be imposed. |
Composition and structure of regrowth forests on abandoned agricultural landOriginal PaperIrina N. Volkova, Alexander Solodunov, Larisa N. KondratenkoJ. For. Sci., 2020, 66(10):436-442 Overgrowing of agricultural land by forest in Russia is a large-scale process. This study aims to examine the composition and structure of forests that took over abandoned agricultural lands in Belorechensky district, Krasnodar Krai (Russia). The research on 4 farmland plots was carried out in 2018. At the time of observation agricultural land has been abandoned for 7 to 8 years. Research methodology was developed to determine parameters such as tree and shrub density per ha, height and age at 50 m and up to 100 m from the forest. Two study sites were dominated by mesophytes, whilst the other two sites were invaded by xerophytes. Xerophytic landscapes were co-dominated by downy oaks and dog roses. The stand density of examined plants was 1.7 times lower at 51 to 100 m than near the forest (P ≤ 0.05). There were 3.3 times as many dog roses as downy oaks. The stand density of common ash stand at 51 to 100 m from the forest edge was 10 times lower than that of dog rose (P ≤ 0.01). Mesophytic landscapes were co-dominated by black poplars and crack willows. Black poplar was 4.3 times more frequent than dog rose (P ≤ 0.002) and 130 times more common than elm (P ≤ 0.0001). Natural overgrowth or succession can affect vast areas of land. It was established that dog roses and downy oaks regenerate xerophytic fields within 6 to 7 years, whereas mesophytic fields become dominated by black poplars and crack willows within 5 to 7 years. |
Evaluation of silver birch diameter increment model based on data of the Czech National Forest InventoryOriginal PaperJan Kikal, Zdeněk AdamecJ. For. It occurs mainly on clearcutting areas after disturbances. The aim of this study was to fit breast height diameter increment model for birch with respect to tree age, share of birch trees and forest site type (ecological series - ES and forest vegetation zones - FVZ). We used data of both cycles of National Forest Inventory of the Czech Republic. We evaluated production potential of this species. We tested Korf and Michailoff increment models in variant of nonlinear least squares model (NLS) and nonlinear mixed effects model (NLME). Michailoff models performed better. We found seven statistically significant and practically applicable models. The greatest influence on increment of diameter at breast height have forest vegetation zone and ecological series whereas the influence of the share of birch in forest stand is smaller. The highest absolute values of diameter increment were on gleyed or enriched with water sites in the fourth forest vegetation zone. |
Long-term tending effect on static stability of pure beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) standsOriginal PaperIgor ŠtefančíkJ. For. Sufficient mechanic stand stability could be developed by the early and long-term thinning where basic tree characteristics, such as stem and crown parameters play the decisive role. We compared selected parameters of static stability in pure beech stands, which have been exposed to heavy low thinning and free-crown thinning with control stands without interventions. Data from twenty-seven long-term research subplots at eight localities across Slovakia were involved in this study. In total 7 693 trees between 30 and 110 years were analysed. Slenderness (h/d ratio), crown length, crown width and crown ratio proved to be the most explanatory parameters for the defining mechanical stability on subplots with free-crown thinning. We found the least favourable results on control subplots. The differences between the subplots with tending (regardless of the tending method) and the control subplots were statistically significant in all studied parameters (P < 0.05). |
