Closed spinal dysraphism in a 6-month-old mixed breed dogCase ReportGG Franco, EGM Siqueira, JAL Souza, LOC Prado, SC Rahal, MJ Mamprim, BW Minto, CVS Brandao, JS Jr CostaVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(5):219-224 | DOI: 10.17221/68/2020-VETMED The term spinal dysraphism defines an incomplete fusion or a bone defect that affects the neural structures of the spinal cord due to a neural tube malformation. A 6-month-old, male, mixed-breed dog, was evaluated for paraparesis, pelvic limb proprioceptive ataxia, faecal and urinary incontinence. A neurological examination indicated an L4-S3 spinal cord segment lesion. A thoracolumbar and lumbosacral spine magnetic resonance imaging was performed and a closed spinal dysraphism, with the presence of a lipomyelomeningocele, was detected. The magnetic resonance imaging showed an entire narrowing passage and a fibrous mass stemming from a wedge-shaped gap in the caudal region of the dorsal lamina of the L4 vertebra, leaving the spinal canal towards the skin surface in the region where the skin stigma was observed. A dorsal laminectomy was performed, the spinal cord was exposed, and the entire fibrous mass was excised. Three months postoperatively, the patient had a complete resolution of the urinary and faecal incontinence showing only a residual mild paraparesis, which remained six months after surgery. The surgical procedure resulted in the satisfactory recovery of the neurological signs. |
Thermography as a tool to monitor the velvet temperature and ossification stage of fallow deer (Dama dama) antlers under normal and modified photoperiodic conditionsOriginal PaperA Potrapeluk, P Janiszewski, M BogdaszewskiVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(6):233-241 | DOI: 10.17221/214/2020-VETMED An increase in testosterone levels affects the shedding of velvet which, in turn, influences the behaviour of farm-raised fallow deer bucks. Consequently, the welfare of the farmed animals can be considerably improved by controlling the timing of the velvet shedding period. The aim of this study was to analyse changes in the velvet temperature and the timing of the velvet shedding in farm-raised fallow deer bucks exposed to a modified photoperiod. A total of 28 bucks were examined. The experimental group was subjected to an experimentally modified photoperiod before the direct observations and measurements of the antler temperatures with a thermal imaging camera. The acquired thermograms were useful for analysing the stages and the rate of the antler growth and for predicting the timing of the velvet shedding. The introduction of a long-day photoperiod in spring affected the growth and ossification of the antlers as well as the velvet shedding. The optimal time for antler cutting can be planned based on the identified changes in the velvet temperature in different parts of the antler. |
Experimental determination of the pharmacokinetic properties of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole combination in the blood serum of broiler chickensOriginal PaperK Putecova, K Nedbalcova, I Bartejsova, M Zouharova, K Matiaskova, E Jeklova, M Viskova, P Zouzelkova, M Jerabek, K StastnyVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(6):248-256 | DOI: 10.17221/190/2020-VETMED A rapid, simple and highly efficient analytical method for the targeted determination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in serum samples has been developed and used to measure the pharmacokinetic curve of these medicinal substances after administration to chicken broilers. The pharmacokinetics properties of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole were investigated in clinically healthy broiler chickens after the single oral administration of the commercial preparation Methoxasol (Eurovet Animal Health, B.V., The Netherlands) at a dose of 0.275 ml/kg b.w. After a single dose drug administration, the chickens were sacrificed by decapitation under general anaesthesia by Isoflurin 1 000 mg/g (Vetpharma AH, Spain) and the blood was collected at precisely defined intervals: 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180, 360 and 720 min after the administration. The serum concentrations of amoxicillin were determined using Q Exactive tandem mass spectrometer (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA) in conjunction with liquid chromatography. The detected pharmacokinetic parameters of trimethoprim after the oral administration were Cmax = 2.1 ± 1.0 µg/ml; Tmax = 1.5 h; t1/2 = 0.88 h; kel = 0.009 3 ± 0.001 1 1/h; AUCt = 2.901 ± 1.4 µg.h/ml; AUC∞ = 2.907 ± 1.5 µg.h/ml; Vd = 2.632 l/kg; Cl = 2.7 l/h. The pharmacokinetic parameters of sulfamethoxazole after the oral administration were Cmax = 47.1 ± 15.3 µg/ml; Tmax = 1 h; t1/2 = 1.92 h; kel = 0.004 6 ± 0.000 3 1/h; AUCt = 89.676 ± 26.9 µg.h/ml; AUC∞ = 94.612 ± 28.4 µg.h/ml; Vd = 0.584 l/kg; Cl = 0.21 l/h. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first pharmacokinetic study of the combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in broiler chickens. |
Leech therapy in the treatment of a penile haematoma in a stallionCase ReportA Nowicki, J Jaworska, W BaranskiVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(6):266-271 | DOI: 10.17221/163/2020-VETMED Treatment of penile haematomas includes conventional therapy and/or surgical intervention which may not always result in the recovery of all penile functions. For valuable breeding stallions, a safe and effective treatment is necessary and medical leech therapy meets these criteria. Additionally, the proven efficiency and safety of the use of leeches in the resolution of haematomas makes this method applicable to other fields of veterinary medicine. A 14-year-old stallion was presented and assigned to the university hospital with a swollen and prolapsed penis. The owner reported that the stallion was likely kicked in the penis while mating. There were no deviations in the physiological indicators during the general examination. A drainage was inserted and a compression bandage was applied. After an initial slight subsidence of the oedema, the healing process slowed down. Hence, the experimental leech treatment was applied. The hirudotherapy was performed twice, five days apart. The hirudotherapy proved to be safe and effective, and with the addition of hydrotherapy, anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics, resulted in the full recovery of the horse within 45 days. The erectile functions of the penis were restored and the stallion successfully continued its breeding career. |
An oesophageal benign stricture: Endoscopy treatment limitation and surgical management in a heiferCase ReportM Trovatelli, G Sala, S Romussi, A BoccardoVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(6):272-277 | DOI: 10.17221/93/2020-VETMED A 4-month-old female red Holstein Friesian heifer was referred with intermittent meteorism and regurgitation associated with poor weight gain. The subject showed a fair physical condition with an increased respiratory rate, normal food prehension, mastication, and swallowing activity. The blood gas analysis showed mild respiratory acidosis. An oral gastric tube introduction followed by an endoscopy confirmed the provisional diagnosis of benign oesophageal stenosis. An endoscopic balloon and bouginage did not result in any stricture release, probably due to the degree of fibrosis of the stenotic ring. A surgical approach with a mucosectomy was performed, which restored the normal oesophageal function. Based on the authors' knowledge, this is the first description of a bovine oesophageal mucosectomy as a definitive surgical treatment for a stricture after the failure of both balloon dilation and a bougienage technique. |
Percutaneous endoscopic limited-lumbosacral-dorsal laminectomy in eight dogs - A cadaveric studyOriginal PaperSB Yang, HS Moon, YH Hwang, HC Lee, D Lee, JH LeeVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(7):279-286 | DOI: 10.17221/33/2020-VETMED This study aimed to investigate the technical feasibility of a percutaneous endoscopic limited-dorsal laminectomy (PELDL) and to evaluate if the decompression and examination of the lumbosacral vertebral canals could be achieved using an endoscope in small dogs. A total of eight fresh canine cadavers were used for the study. Following the injection of a barium and agarose mixture (BA-gel), which simulates intervertebral disc herniation, a PELDL was performed over L7-S1 in these animals. Computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained pre- and postoperatively to evaluate the surgical outcomes. All the procedures were completed with a clear visualisation of the spinal cord and removal of the BA-gel. The mean surgery time for the PELDL was 30.00 ± 12.01 minutes. In two dogs, iatrogenic nerve root injuries were caused by the surgical instruments during the operation. The CT scans showed that the amount of BA-gel removed was sufficient for a spinal-cord decompression. A PELDL could be used for the BA-gel removal to decompress the spinal cord and provide a clear view of the spinal canal. Therefore, it could be used as an alternative surgical option to treat lumbosacral disc disease in dogs. |
Optimisation of phagocytosis assay in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)Original PaperH Minarova, P Ondrackova, M Palikova, J Mares, J Blahova, K Jarova, M FaldynaVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(7):298-304 | DOI: 10.17221/189/2020-VETMED A phagocytosis assay is one of the most commonly used functional immunological methods. There are many possible ways of assessing leucocytes and their ability to ingest different particles. The aim of this study was to optimise the phagocytosis assay in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) using labelled zymosan particles (Alexa Fluor 488 and Texas Red conjugate). Whole blood was incubated with the particles under different conditions and leucocytes were subsequently isolated by haemolysis in a hypotonic environment. The effect of the different incubation time, temperature, blood volume and dilution on the phagocytic activity was evaluated by flow cytometry. Our experiments showed that the incubation for at least 2 h at 15 °C provided optimal results, while the blood volume and dilution had no significant effect. The optimised assay will be used for the examination of fish health and in further experimental studies. |
Congenital gallbladder agenesis in a 9-month-old Bull TerrierCase ReportO Gojska-Zygner, M Galanty, B Degorska, J Frymus, W ZygnerVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(7):305-312 | DOI: 10.17221/135/2020-VETMED Congenital gallbladder agenesis is an extremely rare disorder, which has, to the best of our knowledge, only been reported in seventeen dogs (mainly in Japan). In almost all of these cases, gallbladder agenesis or hypoplasia was detected in small dogs. In this report, we present a case of gallbladder agenesis in a 9-month-old intact female Bull Terrier. The clinical signs included diarrhoea, sporadic vomiting, apathy and decreased appetite. The serum biochemistry revealed an increased liver enzyme activity, an increased concentration of serum bile acids and mild hyperbilirubinaemia. A diagnostic laparotomy demonstrated the lack of a gallbladder and dilation of the common bile duct, which was misinterpreted as the gallbladder in the ultrasonographic examination. The histological examination of the liver revealed degenerative changes in the hepatocytes with glycogen accumulation and some necrotic hepatocytes. The therapy included a low protein diet, fluids, silymarin and ursodeoxycholic acid. After nine weeks of therapy, the dog was in good condition, the diarrhoea and vomiting ceased, and the liver function parameters, such as the AST and GLDH activities, and the concentration of bile acids had decreased to reference intervals. |
Efficacy of riboflavin/UV-A corneal phototherapy as stand-alone treatment for ulcerative keratitis in horsesOriginal PaperA Marchegiani, M Bazzano, MP Cassarani, R Arcelli, C Orzalesi, G Lombardo, M Lombardo, A Spaterna, R GiallettiVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(8):321-329 | DOI: 10.17221/60/2020-VETMED The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of riboflavin/UV-A corneal phototherapy in comparison with topical antimicrobials for the treatment of corneal ulcers in horses. Nineteen horses with a diagnosis of corneal ulceration were randomised to receive either corneal phototherapy (11 horses) or topical antimicrobial therapy (8 horses). The corneal phototherapy consisted in the application of a riboflavin-enriched ophthalmic solution onto the cornea for 20 min followed by cornea UV-A irradiation at 30 mW/cm2 for 3 min using a point-of-care UV-A device. A complete ophthalmological examination was performed at enrolment and then at day 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, and 49 after treatment. The corneal ulcer was considered healed when the fluorescein staining was negative. The corneal phototherapy succeeded in the complete corneal wound healing in 91% cases (10/11 horses) by 12.7 ± 5.5 days. In the topical antimicrobial group, no horse showed improvement of the corneal ulceration (0/8; 0%) and two eyes had a corneal perforation. Six horses, due to an enlarged corneal lesion, underwent corneal phototherapy at day 14 and achieved complete wound healing by 17.2 ± 5.5 days in 83% cases (5/6). The corneal phototherapy was shown to be an effective and safe treatment for equine corneal ulcers. |
Age and sex-related differences in the haematological parameters of captive African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus)Original PaperH Gaspar, F Bargallo, J Grifols, E Correia, ML PintoVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(8):330-341 | DOI: 10.17221/31/2020-VETMED African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) are very popular pets, commonly seen in avian clinical practice. Haematological profiles are critical to the understanding of several disease processes, being particularly useful as diagnostic tools in clinical practice, since birds tend to hide clinical signs of disease. We have previously proposed new haematological reference intervals (RI) for captive African grey parrots, and in the present work the basic data obtained was studied in detail to investigate the influence of factors, such as age and sex, on the haematological profile of this bird species. During an 8-year period (March 2009 to July 2017), animals (n = 239) examined in first consultations or check-ups at the Zoològic Veterinaris (Barcelona) were submitted to blood collection at different time points, rendering a total of 459 blood samples. The haematological testing was performed according to the guidelines of the American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology to determine the packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb), mean haemoglobin concentration (MHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), total erythrocyte count (TRBC), total leukocyte count (TWBC), and differential leukogram with absolute and relative counts. All the haematological testing was performed in an in-house laboratory as previously described. Animals with 0 to 4 years of age showed higher values of PCV (P < 0.001), Hb (P = 0.023) and RBC (P = 0.018), and lower values of MCHC (P = 0.008), WBC (P = 0.012) and heterophils (P < 0.001) than older animals. There were significant differences exhibited in the monocytes (P = 0.035) between different age groups. Females presented higher PCV, Hb and RBC values (P < 0.001) compared to males. Our results suggest that the age and sex influence the haematological parameters in a significant manner in African grey parrots and should be accounted for when assessing the health status of individuals from this species. |
Effects of bee bread, Cornelian cherries treatment on the femoral bone structure using Zucker diabetic fatty rats as an animal modelOriginal PaperM Martiniakova, J Blahova, V Kovacova, V Mondockova, R Babosova, A Kalafova, M Capcarova, R OmelkaVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(8):342-349 | DOI: 10.17221/224/2020-VETMED This is a pilot study dealing with the reduced femoral bone structure in Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats following a 10 weeks treatment with bee bread and Cornelian cherries. The adult ZDF rats were divided into 4 groups: the E1 group received bee bread (500 mg/kg b.w. daily), the E2 group received Cornelian cherries (500 mg/kg b.w. per day), the E3 group was simultaneously supplemented by bee bread and Cornelian cherries (500 + 500 mg/kg b.w. daily), and the C group served as an untreated diabetic control. A non-significant decrease in the blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride concentrations, ALP activity and a non-significant increase in the insulin, total body weight of the ZDF rats, femoral length and weight were observed in the E1, E2, and E3 groups. The treatments had no impact on the relative volume of the cortical bone, bone mineral density, bone surface and cortical bone thickness. On the contrary, the relative volume of the trabecular bone, trabecular thickness and trabecular bone surface were significantly increased in the E1 group. The relative volume of the trabecular bone and trabecular thickness were significantly elevated in the E2 group. In the E3 group, the trabecular thickness was found to have significantly increased. Single administrations of either bee bread or Cornelian cherries had more positive effects on the trabecular bone microarchitecture in the ZDF rats than the simultaneous supplementation. |
Cadmium concentration in cattle tissues in the Czech RepublicOriginal PaperJ Drapal, L Steinhauser, K Stastny, M FaldynaVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(9):369-375 | DOI: 10.17221/218/2020-VETMED The aim of this paper was to evaluate the cadmium concentrations in the muscles, liver, and kidney of three age categories (≤ 8 months; ≤ 2 years; ≥ 2 years) of cattle during the period of years 2014-2019 and to determine the age limit at which the concentration of cadmium in an organ with the highest accumulation increases health risk for consumers. In cattle above two years of age, there was a higher average cadmium concentration in the liver (0.10 mg/kg) and kidney (0.62 mg/kg), when compared with cadmium concentration in the liver (0.06 mg/kg) and kidney (0.24 mg/kg) of cattle under two years of age. A paired correlation coefficient r = 0.825 8 (P < 0.006) and Spearman's coefficient ρ = 0.92 (P < 0.000 1) were calculated for the dependence of the cadmium concentration on the age. The correlation analysis statistically demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the concentration of cadmium in the kidney and the age of the cattle. A non-significant difference between the maximum limit and the average concentration of the cadmium in the kidney of the cattle from the age of 6 years (P = 0.029) was demonstrated using the t-test. The cadmium concentration in the muscles was low and was not significantly affected by the cattle's age. |
Induction of atopic dermatitis by epicutaneous sensitisation with Dermatophagoides farinae in nongenetically predisposed Beagle dogsOriginal PaperY Jeong, T Yun, H Kim, Y Koo, JH Kang, MP Yang, BT KangVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(10):413-422 | DOI: 10.17221/58/2020-VETMED This study was performed to induce atopic dermatitis (AD) using nongenetically predisposed Beagle dogs. Five healthy Beagle dogs were used. Twice weekly for 12 weeks, the dogs were painted on the axillae and groin with a solution of Dermatophagoides farinae (D. farinae). Each dog was thereafter placed in a cage where a house dust mite (HDM) solution was applied on the bottom of the cage. The dog remained in the cage for 3 h daily for 3 consecutive days for the environmental exposure to HDM. Serum samples were collected at 0 week and 6 weeks after sensitisation, and at 0 h and 72 h after the environmental exposure. During the environmental exposure, skin biopsies were obtained at 0 h, 36 h, and 72 hours. After the first environmental exposure, no dog had any marked clinical sign. An additional sensitisation was subsequently administered for 10-13 weeks. Three of the five dogs developed pruritic dermatitis with skin lesions after the second exposure. The histopathology of the lesions revealed severe infiltration of inflammatory cells and dermal oedema. The levels of D. farinae-specific IgE were also elevated. This study demonstrated that AD could be induced by epicutaneous sensitisation with HDM in nongenetically predisposed dogs. |
A comprehensive study of canine parvoviruses (Carnivore protoparvovirus 1, Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1 and 2) from shelter dogs in TurkeyOriginal PaperH Isidan, T TuranVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(10):423-430 | DOI: 10.17221/130/2020-VETMED A total of 150 rectal swab samples were collected from diarrheic dogs from the Sivas Municipal Animal Shelter, Turkey in April 2018. While 127 faecal samples were gathered from adults, 23 samples were collected from puppies. Canine parvovirus type 2 (Carnivore protoparvovirus 1), Canine minute virus (Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1) and Canine bocavirus (Carnivore bocaparvovirus 2) were examined by PCR with three sets of novel primers. Some of the amplicons were subjected to molecular sequencing and molecular analysis. Three faecal (2.36%) samples were found to be positive for Carnivore protoparvovirus 1, five faecal samples (3.94%) were found to be positive for Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1 and three samples (2.36%) were found to be positive for Carnivore bocaparvovirus 2 among 127 adult dogs. On the other hand, 14/23 faecal samples (60.87%) were found to be positive for Carnivore protoparvovirus 1, 8/23 faecal samples (34.78%) were found to be positive for Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1, and 6/23 faecal samples (26.09%) were found to be positive for Carnivore bocaparvovirus 2 from the puppies. Moreover, we detected two distinct clades of Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1 and 2 according to the molecular analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report for the direct detection of Carnivore bocaparvovirus 1 and 2 in Turkey. |
Characterisation of Clostridium perfringens isolated from chickens in VietnamOriginal PaperTN Thi, H Vu-Khac, TN DucVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(10):431-439 | DOI: 10.17221/209/2020-VETMED The objective of this study was isolating and characterising Clostridium perfringens from chickens in Vietnam and identifying virulence factors involved with enteritis. Five hundred thirty-one faecal and sixty-eight intestinal samples were collected from healthy and diseased chickens for the C. perfringens isolation. The presence of virulence factors was determined by multiplex PCR. The netB gene of the selected isolates was sequenced and checked for its expression by SDS-PAGE. Two hundred seventy-two C. perfringens isolates were collected. All of them were shown to be positive for the cpa gene. The netB gene was detected in 26.56% of the C. perfringens isolates from the healthy chickens, while 43.45% of the isolates from the faeces and 45% of the isolates from the intestinal samples were positive for this gene in the diseased birds. All eight isolates positive to netB from the diseased chickens showed 100% identity in the netB sequence and produced the NetB toxin in vitro, whereas only two out of eight healthy chicken-derived isolates produced this toxin. Nine out of ten chickens experimentally infected with the C. perfringens netB-positive isolate showed typical signs of enteritis. The cpa gene was the most prevalent virulence factor identified in the bacteria C. perfringens, but the netB gene could be a major player responsible for necrotic enteritis progression in chickens. |
Comparative effectiveness of interventions for treating interdigital necrobacillosis in cattle: A network meta-analysisOriginal PaperMA Torehanov, ZK Tulemissova, AS Ibazhanova, ER Rafikova, B Muzapbarov, EM Korabaev, ST SiyabekovVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(11):461-469 | DOI: 10.17221/232/2020-VETMED The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the efficacy of different antimicrobial agents against interdigital necrobacillosis (IN) in cattle to identify the treatment with the greatest benefit. A network meta-analysis was used to synthesise empirical results from randomised controlled trials. Four studies with five interventions for 565 animals were included. The meta-analysis found no significant differences between the risk ratios for the antimicrobials versus placebo. However, ceftiofur sodium administered intramuscularly at a dose of 1.0 µg/kg body weight every 24 h for 3 days showed a better clinical response than 6.6 µg of oxytetracycline, 2.5 µg of tulathromycin, the placebo and 0.1 µg of ceftiofur sodium. The results show the best efficacy for 6.6 µg of oxytetracycline and 1.0 µg of ceftiofur sodium. Nevertheless, the latter is likely to be superior to oxytetracycline in terms of its pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties. Thus, 1.0 µg of ceftiofur sodium appears to provide the best therapeutic activity against IN in cattle. Further well-designed studies are required. |
Health concerns of lambs fed cottonseed hulls combined with chitosan by examining the blood metabolic profile and histopathology of the kidney, liver, and rumenOriginal PaperT Silva Magalhaes, GGP Carvalho, EM Santos, AES Lima, JE Freitas Junior, DS Pina, SA Santos, LFB Pinto, GB Mourao, FDS Soares, TCJ Pereira, LC LeiteVet Med - Czech, 2021, 66(11):470-480 | DOI: 10.17221/194/2020-VETMED This study analysed the effect of cottonseed hulls and chitosan in diets for lambs by determining the blood metabolite profile, and the histopathology of the kidney, liver, and rumen. Eighty non-castrated Santa Inês lambs, approximately 120 days of age and a mean initial body weight (b.w.) of 22.6 (standard deviation ± 2.2 kg) were assigned to a completely randomised design, with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Two chitosan levels and two cottonseed forms were evaluated. The experimental diets were following: diet containing whole cottonseed hulls (WC) without the addition of chitosan; diet containing WC with 136 mg/kg b.w. chitosan added; diet containing ground cottonseed hulls (GC) without the addition of chitosan; diet containing GC with 136 mg/kg b.w. chitosan added. The blood metabolites and hepatic enzymes ALT, AST, GGT were not significantly influenced in the treatment groups, except for the serum cholesterol concentration which was lower (P < 0.05) when the chitosan was combined with the whole cottonseed hulls. There were histopathological alterations (P < 0.05) in the liver and kidney tissue and moderate changes in the rumen samples in the animals fed cottonseed without chitosan, however, when chitosan was added, the changes were less marked. The combination of chitosan with cottonseed hulls (ground or whole) can be supplied safely to feedlot finishing lambs without compromising their health. |

The effects of three plasma-activated water generation systems on lettuce seed germinationOriginal PaperRouzbeh Abbaszadeh, Pegah Khosravi Nia, Mahsa Fattahi, Hamidreza Ghomi MarzdashtiRes. Agr. Eng., 2021, 67(3):131-137 | DOI: 10.17221/105/2020-RAE Irrigation water treatment using plasma technology is a new approach to improve productivity. In this study the generation of plasma-activated water (PAW) as a novel subject in agriculture is investigated. Three water treatment systems were designed and evaluated: 1st PAW generation from vapor and injection into the water, 2nd PAW generation using electrical discharge on the water surface and 3rd PAW generation in the aeration path into the water. The lettuce seeds were irrigated with PAW. The germination rate and mean germination time were measured after 6 days. The seedlings weight and the number of seedlings with a length of more than 3 cm were also recorded after 8 days. The results showed that PAW had a significant effect on the germination rate and length of seedlings. Electrical discharge on the water surface had the best results. Germination rate and the number of seedlings with a length of more than 3 cm increased by 11 and 36% respectively. While injection of plasma-treated air into the water significantly reduced the number of seedlings longer than 3 cm, compared to the control. In conclusion, the PAW application can improve some attributes of lettuce germination depending on the PAW system. |

The planned reform of the Common Agricultural Policy with particular reference to the direct support systemShort CommunicationAdrian SadłowskiAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2020, 66(8):381-390 | DOI: 10.17221/397/2019-AGRICECON Having evaluated the situation in agriculture and rural areas, and having assessed the significance of new external and internal conditions, the European Commission has decided to reform the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union. This article presents the essence of the part of the reform plan which affects the direct support system. The author of the article also examines the impact of the reform on the system's capacity to achieve the set goals, and on its efficiency. The research showed that the new legal framework proposed by the Commission would not directly improve the efficiency of the system, but the increased decision-making authority it grants to Member States provides an opportunity to reduce administrative outlays on the functioning of the scheme. Likewise, the effectiveness of a reformed direct support system in achieving the set goals will largely depend on decisions made by Member States, i.e. on the appropriate choice of instruments, and the accuracy of their form, as well as the equitable distribution of the available funds. |
Break-even point analysis for milk production - Selected EU countriesOriginal PaperJan Syrůček, Luděk Bartoň, Jiří BurdychAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2022, 68(6):199-206 | DOI: 10.17221/40/2022-AGRICECON Unstable conditions in the milk market in the Czech Republic (CR) and in the European Union (EU), mainly due to volatility of milk prices, are increasing pressure on dairy farmers to maximise production at the lowest possible production costs. Break-even point (BEP) analysis is a useful tool in dairy herd management for determining minimum requirements for profitability. BEP values for milk yield and milk price were calculated based on data obtained from 95 dairy farms in the CR. BEP values were estimated also for another eight EU countries based upon production and cost data from the EU Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). With the milk price ranging from EUR 28 to EUR 38 per 100 L and while excluding subsidies, zero profitability would be achieved on Czech dairy farms with milk yields ranging from 6 706 L to 13 151 L per cow and from 7 450 L to 14 088 L per cow in Czech Fleckvieh (C) and Holstein (H) herds, respectively. In order to achieve 5% profitability, the milk yield would need to increase by 21%. Considerable variability exists among EU countries in estimated BEP values depending upon average milk yields, input prices, and milk prices in different countries. |
Nutritional and functional properties of certain gluten-free raw materialsDubravka Vitali, Daniela Amidžić Klarić, Irena Vedrina DragojevićCzech J. Food Sci., 2010, 28(6):495-505 | DOI: 10.17221/253/2009-CJFS Since the adherence to the gluten-free diet in celiac patients affects the consumption from the grain food group, questions have been raised about the effects of such diet on calcium, iron, and fiber intake, as well as total carbohydrate and grain food consumption. Therefore, in the framework of this research, eleven types of nutritionally valuable gluten-free raw materials were proposed for consumption in gluten-free diet. They were investigated considering their macronutritive composition, different starch classes, the contents of essential minerals, dietary fiber, and polyphenols, as well as their antioxidant activity. The results were compared to the values obtained with wheat flour that was used as the reference raw material indicating that, in many aspects, the gluten-free raw materials mentioned can be considered as nutritionally more valuable in comparison to wheat flour. Especially satisfying results were obtained regarding the contents of proteins, dietary fiber, polyphenols, iron, and calcium. Therefore, the raw materials investigated can be recommended as desirable components that may contribute to the diversity, functionality, and nutritional quality of gluten-free diet. |
Effects of eggshell powder supplementation on nutritional and sensory attributes of biscuitsOriginal PaperShahnila, Sana Arif, Imran Pasha, Hira Iftikhar, Fakiha Mehak, Razia SultanaCzech J. Food Sci., 2022, 40(1):26-32 | DOI: 10.17221/309/2020-CJFS Chicken eggshell, a poultry waste material, is a potential but poorly recognised source of calcium that can be used by humans to increase their dietary calcium intake by incorporating it into foods. This study was aimed at assessing the effects of eggshell powder supplementation at 5, 10, 15, and 20% levels on the chemical composition, sensory characteristics, and calorific value of the biscuits. Calcium absorption from supplemented biscuits was also determined. The inclusion of eggshell powder resulted in significant variations in the chemical composition of biscuits. It profoundly increased the mineral content, mainly calcium from 43.57 mg 100 g-1 to 1 054.7, 2 186.7, 2 941.6, and 3 843 mg 100 g-1 at 5, 10, 15 and 20% supplementation level, respectively. Substantial changes in the sensory quality of biscuits were also observed with corresponding rises in eggshell addition levels. Biscuits prepared with 5 and 10% supplementation levels were found acceptable in terms of sensory attributes. The in vivo study affirmed the absorption of calcium from eggshell powder and it was found highest (41.83%) at 5% supplementation level. Conclusively, supplementation of biscuits with eggshell powder might be an attractive source of dietary calcium intake without any significant adverse effects on biscuits quality up to 10% supplementation level. |
Classification of hazelnuts according to their quality using deep learning algorithmsOriginal PaperNizamettin Erbaş, Gökalp Çinarer, Kazim KiliçCzech J. Food Sci., 2022, 40(3):240-248 | DOI: 10.17221/21/2022-CJFS Hazelnut is a product with high nutritional and economic value. In maintaining the quality value of hazelnut, the classification process is of great importance. In the present day, the quality classification of hazelnuts and other crops is performed in general manually, and so it is difficult and costly. Performing this classification with modern agricultural techniques is much more important in terms of quality. This study was based on a model intended to detect hazelnut quality. The model is about the establishment of an artificial intelligence-based classification system that can detect the hidden defects of hazelnuts. In the developed model, the visuals used in the dataset are divided into training and test groups. In the model, hazelnuts are divided into 5 classes according to their quality using AlexNet architecture and modern deep learning (DL) techniques instead of traditional hazelnut classification methods. In this model developed based on artificial intelligence, a very good approach was presented with the accurate classification of 99%. Moreover, the values regarding precision and recall were also determined at 98.7% and 99.6%, respectively. This study is important in terms of becoming widespread information technology use and computer-assisted applications in the agricultural economics field such as product classification, quality, and control. |

Evaluation of certain pomological and phenological traits of selected asian pear varieties growing in Middle European conditionsOriginal PaperTomáš Nečas, Jan Wolf, Tomáš Kiss, Martina Göttingerová, Ivo Ondrášek, Monika BieniaszHort. Sci. (Prague), 2020, 47(2):81-92 | DOI: 10.17221/83/2019-HORTSCI The cultivation and breeding of new pear tree varieties have great potential, especially with the changing climate. The introduction of genetic resources and varieties from regions with a high genetic diversity can have a positive effect on the cultivation of pear trees in our region. In this experiment, a total of 23 Asian pear varieties originating from Japan and China were assessed. Based on the values obtained, the varieties were sorted, and suitable varieties for the conditions of the Czech Republic were selected. The early-maturing varieties that proved to be promising were 'Shinseiki' and 'Zao Su Li' due to their refreshing juiciness, plasticity and ease of cultivation. generally low demand. The 'Shinseiki' bears medium- to small-sized fruits (103 g on average). The size of the fruits of the evaluated cultivar 'Zao Su Li' can reach very large sizes (255 g on average). The medium-maturity varieties suitable for the conditions of the Czech Republic were 'Hosui' and 'Dangshansu Li' (ripening on the September 11-19 on average) and another interesting variety, 'Kirgizkaja zimnaja'. Other suitable medium-maturity varieties are 'Nijisseiki', 'Sha Li' and 'Pung Su'. Of the assessed late-maturing varieties, the promising ones were 'Ya Li' and 'Mut Chen', especially due to their relatively high storability under cold storage. |
The effect of different tending on stand structure and quantitative production of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stand in a selected region of East SlovakiaOriginal PaperI. ŠtefančíkJ. For. Sci., 2015, 61(3):98-105 | DOI: 10.17221/105/2014-JFS The paper deals with assessment of a long-term experiment (45 and/or 53 years of investigation) in the 90-years-old European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stand in a selected region of East Slovakia. The research was performed from 1960 to 2013 on subplots managed by four different methods: (i) plot with heavy thinning from below (C grade according to the German forest research institutes from 1902), (ii) plot with free crown thinning (thinning interval of 5 years), (iii) plot with free crown thinning (thinning interval of 10 years) and (iv) control plot (with no thinning). The diameter and height structure was calculated by structural indices according to Füldner (1995). Additionally, the following quantitative parameters were analysed: number of trees (tree density), basal area, standing volume, total yield production, total annual volume increment, total tree number decrease including thinning, self-thinning and abiotic injurious factors. The most suitable structure documented by the above-mentioned indices was found on the plots managed by free crown thinning. Similarly, from the quantitative aspect, the highest values (total production according to basal area) were reached on the plot tended by free crown thinning (thinning interval of 5 years). As for the total production according to merchantable volume, the highest values were obtained from the plot treated with heavy thinning from below. |
