Food Sci., 2014, 32(1):54-60 | DOI: 10.17221/505/2012-CJFS Nine lactic acid bacteria from artisanal-made cheeses were investigated for their ability to inhibit Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. Both extracellular and surface-bound bacteriocins were recovered. While Lb. plantarum molecule was present only extracellularly, all the other strains displayed interference in both compartments. Maximum bacteriocin production was observed at the end-logarithmic phase, with the exception of Lb. plantarum (late stationary) and L. lactis subsp. cremoris (very early exponential). Lactobacillus and Lactococcus strains inhibited both List. monocytogenes and S. aureus. On the contrary, both E. faecium strains were active only on List. monocytogenes, and the enterocin A amount was enhanced under oxygen stress. All L. lactis strains (including L. lactis subsp. cremoris EL3 generally producing nisin Z) biosynthesised nisin A, while Lb. plantarum caused interference because of its very high lactic acid production. All these results suggest that artisanal-made cheeses can contain promising strains for food biosafety: these strains can be employed in toto directly in the food matrix or the purified bacteriocins can be incorporated into food packaging. |

Food Sci., 2017, 35(2):171-179 | DOI: 10.17221/194/2016-CJFS The prospects of sparkling wine production by the 'Champenoise' method using alginate-immobilised yeast cells were examined. Grape varieties dominant in quantity were selected within the group of recommended and permitted varieties of Kutjevo vineyards, located in the eastern part of continental Croatia. Research revealed that there are no influential variations in the principal physicochemical and sensory characteristics between sparkling wines obtained through immobilised yeast and traditional sparkling method. The analysis of aroma compounds showed minor differences between samples. Observed oenological parameters assessed in the final products did not show any relevant oenological differences, with the exception of alcohol content, which was slightly higher in sparkling wines made with yeast cells immobilised with calcium alginate beads. According to this research, the sensory properties of the produced sparkling wines, compared to sparkling wine produced with free yeast, did not show any significant differences. On the full-scale obtained results indicate that some of the selected varieties can be sorted as suitable for the production of sparkling wine using immobilised yeast cells. |

The samples were excised from a different anatomical location of each beaver carcass used in the study: m. longissimus dorsi (LD), m. triceps brachii (shoulder), m. biceps femoris (thigh). Thigh muscles were characterized by the highest percentage of free fat followed by longissimus muscle and shoulder. The total proportions of saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA), including many individual fatty acids, were affected by the muscle anatomical location. The fattiest thigh had the most favourable and highest PUFA/SFA, hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic (h/H) and lowest n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios, and the lowest thrombogenic index. Despite the fact that the leanest m. triceps brachii had the highest proportions of total polyunsaturated fatty acids, the n-6/n-3PUFA ratio was the lowest compared with the muscles from other anatomical locations and showed lower atherogenic index compared with a more fatty longissimus muscle. |

Food Sci., 2019, 37(4):226-231 | DOI: 10.17221/31/2018-CJFS To investigate a comparative evaluation of the gluten polymerization properties at different oil contents during the extrusion processing, the electrophoretic profiles of the gluten, free sulfhydryl (SH) compounds, the secondary structure of gluten, glutenin macropolymer contents and gluten network were measured. Five gluten samples were formulated by adding different oil contents. The low molecular weight contents of gluten decreased as well as the high molecular weight contents increased during the extrusion processing. The free SH of gluten at 8 or 10% oil content drops significantly to a minimum. The β-sheets contents of gluten have significantly difference between the treatments and control, except for 15 and 20% oil content treatments. Confocal laser scanning microscopy of mixed glutens correlated to the degree of oil contents with the gluten in the bi-continuous gluten network. |

Food Sci., 2019, 37(4):260-267 | DOI: 10.17221/477/2017-CJFS The investigation determined the influence of Lactobacillus helveticus strains (T80, T105, B734 and DSMZ 20075) and Lactobacillus acidophilus La-05 (probiotic strain) on the antioxidant activity of whey and milk protein preparations. In order to indicate possible mechanism of antioxidant activity of the obtained hydrolysates, the reducing power (RP) assay, ability to neutralize free radicals and Fe2+ chelating activity analysis were employed. The results suggest that antioxidant activity of tested hydrolysates depends on the type of protein preparation (substrate) and the applied bacterial strain. The strongest antioxidant activity was exhibited by whey protein isolate hydrolysate obtained by using L. helveticus T80. A majority of fermented products obtained with the use of the probiotic strain were characterized by higher antioxidant properties than those obtained by application of L. helveticus. The solution of caseinoglicomacropeptide fermented by strain T105 exhibited the highest RP values, while α-lactalbumin hydrolysed by probiotic strain (La-5) was characterized by the strongest Fe2+ chelating activity. The analysed protein preparations and their hydrolysates obtained with using tested bacteria might potentially be applied in food products in order to inhibit oxidation processes. |
The gluten content in oat products available on the Czech marketFood Analysis, Food Quality and NutritionJana Rysová, Eva Mašková, Zuzana ŠmídováCzech J. Food Sci., 2019, 37(5):345-350 | DOI: 10.17221/114/2018-CJFS The gluten content in oat products on the market in the Czech Republic was monitored. The ELISA kit Ridascreen gliadin from R-Biopharm based on the R5 antibody was used for the gliadin determination. Oat products (41 samples), including 21 samples of oat flakes, were tested. Only 6 samples were labelled as gluten-free and it was confirmed that these samples meet the criteria for gluten-free foods. The total of 29 oat products, of which 15 were samples of oat flakes, contained more than 20 mg/kg of gluten. This means that 71% of oat cereal products were contaminated with cereals toxic for people with celiac disease. It was shown that most oat products on the Czech market are not safe for people with gluten intolerance. |

Sci., 2019, 64(1):1-10 | DOI: 10.17221/35/2018-CJAS Verbascoside, the main component of Lippia citriodora extract, is one of the most powerful free radical scavengers exhibiting a wide biological activity. In in vivo study 20 adult New Zealand white rabbit bucks were divided into two homogeneous groups, one control (CON) and one verbascoside-supplemented (0.1%) in feed mixture (EXP) and later in vitro effects of verbascoside on the motility aspects of rabbit spermatozoa were analysed. The spermatozoa concentration, ejaculate volume, spermatozoa motility, progressive motility, distance parameters, velocity parameters and type of spermatozoa movement were negatively affected by Lippia citriodora leaves extract after the first 4 weeks of dietary treatment, till the end of experiment (8 weeks). Four weeks after the suspension of feed additive supplementation, all spermatozoa traits values returned to the normality, and in line with CON group. For in vitro findings, ejaculates from 10 male New Zealand white bucks were collected using an artificial vagina. Then it was diluted in physiological saline solution containing different concentrations of verbascoside at the concentration of 0, 0.0024, 0.0219, 0.157, 120.0 mg/ml (Ctrl, VB1, VB2, VB3, VB4 groups, respectively), using a dilution ratio of 1 : 4. The obtained data proved that verbascoside at the concentration of 0.0024 and 0.0219 mg/ml had no adverse effect on spermatozoa. Additionally, we found that verbascoside at higher concentrations (0.157 and 120.0 mg/ml) significantly altered all the motility parameters analysed in the experiment. In conclusion a possible negative effect of verbascoside supplementation into feed mixture (0.1%) on semen quality parameters in rabbit bucks as well as in vitro can be stated, obviously considering that target organs of antioxidant activities of phenylpropanoid glycosides are various. In addition it has to be emphasized that the extract showed a reversible action, since the semen traits of treated animals returned to the normality after the dietary administration period. |

Sci., 2019, 64(5):207-215 | DOI: 10.17221/158/2018-CJAS QKI, a KH domain containing RNA binding, is an RNA-binding protein that is involved in cell proliferation and apoptosis through binding to the QKI response element (QRE) site of its target mRNA. And Caspase 8 (CASP8) and Caspase 3 (CASP3) play important roles in the pathway of apoptosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of QKI-5 on the apoptosis of Sertoli cells. The experimental results show that pig tissues contain QKI-5, QKI-6 and QKI-7. Overexpression of QKI-5 significantly decreased the mRNA expression of CASP8 (P < 0.05) and the protein expression of CASP8 (P < 0.05). On the contrary, inhibiting QKI-5 increased the expression of CASP8 significantly. Overexpression of QKI-5 significantly reduced the apoptosis of Sertoli cells and promoted cell growth (P < 0.05). Furthermore, QKI-5 specifically reduced the stability of CASP8 mRNA by binding QRE sites on CASP8. Our experiments provide preliminary evidence that QKI-5 induces Sertoli cells proliferation by inhibiting apoptosis, and this may be one of the factors promoting testicular development. |
The haemoglobin subunits alpha and beta: Old and new genetic variants in the Italian Mediterranean buffaloOriginal PaperRosario Rullo, Aldo Di Luccia, Elena Ciani, Elisa PieragostiniCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2019, 64(7):279-290 | DOI: 10.17221/14/2018-CJAS Haemoglobin (HB), the most widely distributed respiratory pigment in the animal kingdom, is among the best characterized oxygen-binding proteins, both at functional and molecular level. However, very little information is available about the genomic features of HB in river buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), even though there are reports in literature confirming the presence of interesting polymorphisms at the protein level in Mediterranean buffalo. We hence address the characterization of exonic as well as intronic nucleotide polymorphism in the haemoglobin subunit alpha and beta in a set of nine Italian Mediterranean buffaloes exhibiting different HB phenotypes. The nine buffaloes were selected from a random set of 398 samples, previously analysed for their HB protein polymorphism, in order to account for both globin variants and the evolution of intron variability within the most common domesticated species of the family Bovidae. All four sequenced clones of the subunit alpha were 1311 bp, whereas the length of the five different sequenced clones of the subunit beta ranged from 1841 to 1960 bp, due to an insertion of 119 nucleotides. Six polymorphic sites were detected in the four amplicons of alpha subunit. Among them, two variations concern exclusively haplotype A, while four sequence variations were found to be specific to haplotype B. Several variations, both in exonic and intronic regions, were detected in the B. bubalis subunit beta. In conclusion, the nucleotide sequence variants observed in this work substantiate the known haemoglobin protein polymorphisms, and an updated protein nomenclature is provided here. In addition, we observed a high sequence similarity in the overall pattern of variation in the haemoglobin subunits, possibly the results of a concerted evolution, with relatively more extensive gene homogenization in river buffalo than in other ruminant species. |

Mannerist gardens were founded in the territory of Bohemia at the time of Emperor Rudolf II. The model garden for the purposes of this paper is the castle garden in Brandýs nad Labem. There are no reliable historical resources which could specify the plant assortment cultivated in this garden at the time of its creation. However, the period of Rudolfine Mannerism is defined by known determinative elements of garden architecture as well as certain cultivated plant species. For this reason, it was possible to compile a list of elements which must conform to the individual forms of greenery (solitary, hedges, alleys, climbers, containers) and their spatial arrangement (point, line, shape) typical for Renaissance and Mannerist composition. The list was created with respect for the current cultural and climatic conditions by evaluating the current utilisation of the garden. |

One of them is particularly surface weeding before sowing. The aim of the experiment was to find a solution to this problem, i.e. whether covering sowing substrates can suppress the germination and growth of weeds and improve growth parameters of annuals. The certified seed mixture of annuals and three variants of substrates that differed in ability to retain water were chosen for the experiment. Substrate A contained 70% vol. of sand and 30% vol. of peat; substrate B 50% vol. of sand, 20% vol. of siliceous marlite, 30% vol. of peat; and substrate C 30% vol. of sand, 40% vol. of siliceous marlite, 30% vol. of peat. In the control variant annuals were sown directly into the soil. The experiment was established in two different sites. Development of the mixture was monitored and evaluated all the season; the coverage with annuals and weed, the height of annuals and flowering time were evaluated. According to the results the use of sowing substrates ensured the successful development of mixtures of annuals, particularly in the initial stand development. |

Sci., 2019, 65(1):1-8 | DOI: 10.17221/130/2018-JFS Soil properties and foliar chemistry of Douglas-fir stands were evaluated in four regions with historical cultivation of this introduced species in the Czech Republic. All the localities are on acidic sites with pH (KCl) ranging between 4 and 5, low in concentrations of base cations particularly at the soil depth between 10 and 40 cm and also low in phosphorus. Sufficient to increased content of nitrogen and, on the other hand, the deficiency of phosphorus, potassium and occasional deficiency of magnesium were found in foliage. Studied Douglas-fir stands are apparently proximate to the acidic limit of convenient site conditions, however, neither the foliage discoloration nor the growth suppression has been observed. Sensitive management to ensure the nutritional balance sustainability is proposed. |
Forest landscape aesthetic quality model (FLAQM): A comparative study on landscape modelling using regression analysis and artificial neural networksOriginal PaperAli JahaniJ. For. Sci., 2019, 65(2):61-69 | DOI: 10.17221/86/2018-JFS Today, the landscape aesthetic quality assessment is more technical and quantitative in environmental management. We aimed at developing artificial neural network (ANN) modelling and multiple regression (MLR) analysis approaches to predict the perceptional aesthetic quality of forest landscapes. The methodology, followed in this paper, can be divided into six distinct parts: (i) selection of representative study sites, (ii) mapping of landscape units, (iii) quantification of naturalness indicators, (iv) visibility analysis, (v) assessment of human perceptions, (vi) ANN and MLR modelling and sensitivity analysis. The results of ANN modelling, especially its high accuracy (R2 = 0.871) in comparison with MLR results (R2 = 0.782), introduced the forest landscape aesthetic quality model (FLAQM) as a comparative model for an assessment of forest landscape aesthetic quality. According to sensitivity analysis, the values of livestock density, tree harvesting, virgin forest, animal grazing, and tree richness were identified as the most significant variables which influence FLAQM. FLAQM can be used to compare the classes of aesthetic quality of forests. |
Quantification of the economic value of the recreational function of forests in the territory of Městské lesy Hradec Králové a.s.Original PaperDavid Březina, Jakub Michal, Zdeněk Adamec, Jana BurdováJ. The research was conducted in the area of Městské lesy Hradec Králové a.s. in 2018. A part of the questionnaire survey assessed by means of statistical analysis was based on the travel cost method and the contingent valuation method, which investigate the respondents' willingness to pay for services resulting from the recreational ecosystem service of forests. The research specifically dealt with the visitors' willingness to pay for the services resulting from the use of forest logging roads, forest clearings, and small structures of forest infrastructure. The questionnaires were created using foreign publications and case studies. The findings of the questionnaire survey indicated that visitors prevailingly believed that the recreational service provided by the area of interest should not be chargeable. The reason for this opinion was mainly the fact that the visitors perceive the forests in the territory of Městské lesy Hradec Králové a.s. as public goods, hence the access to them should be free of charge. |

Sci., 2019, 65(6):226-233 | DOI: 10.17221/138/2018-JFS Forests as a part of landscape do not fulfil their economic function (timber production) only but a lot of other non-economic functions, especially ecological ones. Both economic and non-economic functions are indisputable and equally important for society. The aim of this paper is to identify current attitudes to forest perceptions by citizens in the Czech Republic. Primary data were obtained by means of a questionnaire research survey which was carried out in 2018. Altogether 824 respondents took part in this survey (n = 824). From the results follows that approximately 70% of respondents visit forest at least three times a month. In connection with this, the relationship between respondents' forest visit frequency and the forest density in the region where they come from was confirmed. 60% of respondents consider the forest exploitation and forest management to be the most important cause of damage and threats to forest. In relation to forest, 46% of respondents consider forest conservation and protection to be the most important topics. |

Sci., 2019, 65(7):256-262 | DOI: 10.17221/59/2019-JFS European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) represents the major climax tree species in the forests of Central Europe growing at many sites. The reintroduction of this species is an important silvicultural topic because of stability and diversity of forest ecosystems and vitality of forest soils in this region. The present study documents the growth, quality of growth and vitality of beech plantations in two positions at the same site (580 m a.s.l., forest habitat type 5K8 - acid fir-beech site, soil type Cambisol): underplantings at 50% of the light intensity of open space and clear-cut. Plantations were established in 1994 by bare-root plants on the same day of April, at a 1 × 1 m spacing, the shelter at the underplanted locality was removed in 2010. In 2017, the plantations showed very different characteristics (underplanting/clear-cut position): density 5,900/3,750 trees.ha-1, mean DBH 6.8/7.0, mean height 8.7/6.9 m, basal area 21.41/14.42 m2.ha-1. Underplanting was documented as a very proper way of beech reintroduction into the species composition of Czech forests. The reintroduction of beech at the newly originated clearcuts should be done with the use of ecological shelter of the mature stands. |
Impact of long and short-term conservation periods on structure of English yew (Taxus baccata L.) in Arasbaran forests, IranOriginal PaperSajad Ghanbari, Kiomars Sefidi, Matthew M. AghaiJ. For. Sci., 2019, 65(7):272-282 | DOI: 10.17221/45/2019-JFS Yew (Taxus baccata L.) is one of the most important and threatened tree species in the Arasbaran region of northwestern Iran. To understand the natural stand structure of yew forests to inform forest management, we assessed the structural characteristics and composition of yew communities using the nearest neighbour and full callipering method at three sites with different conservation histories. Within a one-hectare sampling area, tree species identity, diameter, height, and crown diameter were measured. In each of these sampling areas, 56 sample points were surveyed in a 25 m × 25 m grid for tree species identity, diameter, height, and distance from reference to neighbour trees. To quantify the structural characteristics in areas of different conservation status, some indices were calculated including mingling, distance between reference tree and its nearest neighbouring trees, diameter and height differentiation, uniform angle, and Clark-Evans index. Results revealed that four species - hornbeam (68%), maple (8%), yew (7%), and oak (5.2%) - composed 88% of the tree species. The majority of trees had a short distance (2-3 m) between neighbours. The mean diameter differentiation index for long-term and short-term conservation areas was 0.59 and 0.06, respectively. The uniform angle index showed that there was no class value = "1" at all three sites. In the long-term enclosed area, Clark-Evans index was 1.18. In short-term enclosed areas, it was less than 1 (0.82). At all sites, yew trees were in the least vital class. We conclude that enclosing affects the yew stand structure, specifically in long-term periods of enclosure. |

Sci., 2019, 65(7):283-290 | DOI: 10.17221/55/2019-JFS The effect of root reinforcement depends on the biotechnical characteristics of the root system including the tensile strength of individual roots, the root density and the distribution of the root system in the soil. This research was conducted in the Hyrcanian forest in Iran, where shallow landslides are frequent due to road construction. The effect of the root biotechnical characteristics of Alnus subcordata, Paulownia fortunei and Populus deltoides each one in 2-, 10- and 15-year-old plantations was assessed. The profile trenching method was used in this study to obtain the root area ratio of individual species by counting the number of roots and measuring the root diameter. For each species, single root specimens were sampled and tested for tensile tests in the laboratory using the standard Instron apparatus. The natural moisture content (two weeks after rainfall), Atterberg limits, shear strength of the soil were determined for plantations, stable and unstable sites. Results of this study indicated that plastic index and internal friction angle decreased with increasing root diameter rate. Moreover, internal friction angle and cohesion increased with increasing root area ratio and root diameter and density index. Tensile strength of roots decreased with increasing stand age. The highest and the lowest tensile strengths among species were observed for Paulownia fortunei and Populus deltoides, respectively. The findings of this research contribute to expanding the knowledge of root biotechnical properties of some tree species and to the choice of the most appropriate species for improving plastic index and shear strength in landslide prone areas. |

In order to dissect the physiological components of the low regeneration, pollen originated from different sites as well as from trees of different height was investigated in terms of viability and in vitro germination capacity. In addition, embryo development and viability of the first year immature seeds were further assessed. Pollen was found to present high viability (61.5-93.2%) in all sites and tree height classes. However, pollen germination was quite low (maximum germination percentage recorded was 30.2%). The low pollen germination capacity recorded in trees above 6 m in height was reflected in the subsequent low percentages of successful embryo development and viability found in the produced seeds. These results suggest that low seed fertility in Juniperus excelsa is associated with reduced pollen germination, suggesting a complex regeneration mechanism and is considered an additional step in shedding light on the physiological basis of the low natural regeneration of Juniperus excelsa. |

Sustainable development and maintenance of its ecological stability are among the reasons. The paper compares the 30-year development of the beech stand originated from artificial regeneration on former agricultural land in the area where the Ipeľ River rises in central Slovakia. Two methods of tending were used on three long-term research plots (LTPs) established at the age of 20 years: negative crown thinning, free crown thinning and the third LTP was left to its spontaneous development. The results confirmed the positive impact of tending on the development of these stands. Compared to naturally regenerated stands under comparable site conditions, their higher quantitative production was found. Regarding the qualitative production expressed by the number of trees of selective quality, the worst results were obtained on the control plot. Based on these results, it is recommended to pay more attention to the planting stock quality used for afforestation. |

Sci., 2019, 55(3):191-201 | DOI: 10.17221/38/2018-PPS The presence of Cryphonectria parasitica (Murrill) M.E. Barr was studied in six natural and planted stands of sweet chestnut in Serbia. The fungus was detected on the sweet chestnut in five localities and on the sessile oak in one locality. In total, 77 isolates from the sweet chestnut and five isolates from the sessile oak were obtained. Based on the culture morphology, all the obtained isolates were proven to be free from Cryphonectria (Saccardo) Saccardo & D. Saccardo hypovirus. The isolates of C. parasitica from the sweet chestnut were compatible with three different vegetative compatibility types, EU-12, EU-2, and EU-1, while the isolates from the sessile oak belonged to EU-12. After inoculation in laboratory conditions, the isolate from the sweet chestnut and sessile oak caused the decline in 88 and 76% of the sweet chestnut plants, respectively. In the case of the sessile oak, both isolates caused the decline in 52% of the plants. In field conditions, both isolates were aggressive to sessile oak trees after previous bark wounds and they were statistically significantly different compared to the control trees. The isolate from the sweet chestnut caused significantly larger cankers compared to both the isolate from the sessile oak and the control. |

Cattle slurry at annual rates of 60 (S1), 120 (S2), 180 (S3), and 240 kg nitrogen (N)/ha (S4) was applied to Arrhenatherion grasslands in moderately wet (WS), slopy (SS), and moderately dry (DS) sites cut three times a year over six years, to assess its effects on plant functional types, the Ellenberg N indicator value (Ellenberg N), herbage dry matter (DM) yield, herbage N content and offtake, N nutrition index (NNI), and N use efficiency (NUE). The site-specific changes in an increase in graminoid cover, Ellenberg N, herbage DM yield and N offtake, and NNI along with slurry application rates revealed, while cover of legumes, short forbs, and NUE decreased. In more productive sites (WS and SS), slurry application in the amount of 180 kg N/ha could be suggested as a slurry dose ensuring beneficial agronomic objectives. However, nature conservation requirements via maintaining plant biodiversity were not met. On the contrary, short-term slurry application up to 120 kg N/ha ensured on permeable DS not only sufficient agronomic objectives, but also plant biodiversity conservation requirements. |

The following crops were rotated within the trial: potatoes- winter wheat-spring barley. All three crops were grown each year. The trial comprised 6 treatments: (1) no fertilization; (2) farmyard manure; (3) half dose of farmyard manure + nitrogen (N) in mineral nitrogen fertilizers; (4) mineral nitrogen fertilizers; (5) NPK in mineral fertilizers; (6) straw of spring barley + N in mineral nitrogen fertilizers. The recovery rate of potassium from farmyard manure by crops was 24-26%, from mineral fertilizers it was 27-52%. Different fertilization intensities were manifested by significant differences in the content of exchangeable K in soil. Changes in non-exchangeable K (Kne) were recorded only at the Luvisol site (850 mg Kne/kg), but not at the Cambisol site (3000 mg Kne/kg). The maximum negative balance (-2376 kg K/ha/21 years) was recorded at the mineral nitrogen fertilization treatment. |

In the present study, we examined for the first time the response of fertilizer N use efficiency to experimental warming using 15N labeling with a free-air temperature increase facility (infrared heaters) in a double rice cropping system. 15N-urea was applied in micro-plots to trace the uptake and loss of fertilizer N. Results showed that moderate warming (i.e. an increase of 1.4°C and 2.1°C in canopy temperature for early and late rice, respectively) did not significantly affect grain yield and biomass. Warming significantly reduced N uptake from fertilizer for both early and late rice, while increased N uptake from soil. The N recovery rate of fertilizer was reduced from 35.5% in the control and to 32.3% in the warming treatments for early rice and from 47.2% to 43.1% for late rice, respectively. Warming did not affect fertilizer N loss rate in the early rice season, whereas significantly increased it from 38.9% in the control and to 42.7% in the warming treatments in the late rice season, respectively. Therefore, we suggest that climate warming may reduce fertilizer N use efficiency and increase N losses to the environment in the rice paddy. |

Long-term stationary fertilisation experiments established in 1996 at 2 sites were evaluated. Experiments consisted of unfertilised control treatment and 6 other treatments, combining mineral fertilisation with the application of farmyard manure, sewage sludge and straw. To record the changes in mobile Al forms, we used 5 extraction procedures with agents: water, CaCl2, KCl, CaCl2/DTPA (CAT) and Mehlich 3 solutions. At treatment nitrogen (N) + straw, topsoil acidification was observed, resulting in the increased content of mobile Al. At treatments with mineral fertilisation (N, NPK), increased content of mobile forms of Al was recorded. Application of cattle manure and sewage sludge helped to stabilise the soil pH and reduce mobile Al forms. The close correlation between the methods determining the exchangeable Al (CaCl2 and KCl solutions) was observed; however, KCl extraction was more favourable in soils of low Al extractability, as the amount of extracted Al was 3-4 times higher. Positive correlations were determined between Al extracted by Mehlich 3 solution and the content of exchangeable Al. The less frequently used CAT method also turned out to be perspective for mobile Al determination. Furthermore, aluminium content determined in Mehlich 3 extract was compared with mobile phosphorus amounts in H2O, CAT and Mehlich 3, respectively. All three investigated phosphorus forms showed significantly negative correlations with Al. |

Frequent removal methods, in fact, allow for the reduction of gasses produced from fermentations of the organic matter contained in manure, that affect animal welfare and farmer health and are emitted from animal housings into the atmosphere as a consequence of ventilation. The present study aims to evaluate the performance of a Robotic Scraper (RS) operating on the floors in a full-scale, operative free-stall dairy barn. The research is focused on the evaluation of gaseous emissions from the two types of floors (concrete and rubber mat coated), and with and without RS operation. The floors with rubber coating demonstrated higher emission rates of ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), and methane (CH4) compared to the uncovered concrete floors, both before and after RS operations. The operation of RS, furthermore, determined significant reduction of greenhouse gasses (GHG) but did not have relevant effect in terms of NH3 emission, which reduced only of 1.4% from concrete floors, but increase of 12.7% from rubber coated floors. |
Total content of macroelements and trace elements in Holocene calcareous gyttja from the post-bog area of north-western PolandOriginal PaperGrzegorz Jarnuszewski, Edward MellerSoil & Water Res., 2019, 14(1):40-46 | DOI: 10.17221/146/2017-SWR The study covered 6 sites located in the Vistula glaciation area in north-western Poland, where the Holocene calcareous (gyttja) deposits occur. Three types of such calcareous deposits were isolated: marly (groundwater calcretes) (CaCO3 > 80%, loss of ignition < 20%, non-carbonate fractions < 20%), calcareous gyttja (CaCO3 50-80%, loss of ignition < 40%, non-carbonate fractions < 40%), and clay calcareous gyttja (CaCO3 20-50%, loss of ignition < 30%, non-carbonate fractions < 60%). The content of major and trace elements was determined in different horizons. Several parameters of Holocene calcareous deposits were determined, namely carbonate status, total organic carbon, non-carbonate mineral fractions and several major and minor components. Close correlations between CaCO3 and Ca, Mg contents, between non-carbonate fraction and K, Zn and Cu contents, as well as between ignition loss and Zn and Cu contents were observed in the sediments. The sediments exhibit vertical variability which relates to the genesis of sediments and soils. The highest content of macroelements was recorded in the uppermost layers for Ca, Mg, Na, and Mn and for microelements (trace elements) in bottom layers for S, P, K, Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Ni. |

In this study, different methods were used to quantify non-volatile light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) and water from sample columns subjected to different water to LNAPL ratios. The objective of the study was to evaluate methods for porous media water and LNAPL contents analysis. The liquids were sampled from the sample columns using activated carbon pellets (ACP). Sample columns water content was also measured using soil moisture sensors. Dielectric mixing model (DMM) was evaluated for the estimation of LNAPL content after water and LNAPL contents of the sample columns were determined through gravimetric analysis method. The result shows that it was possible to sample both water and LNAPL using ACP proportionally but with high standard deviations. It also shows that more liquid was sampled from sample columns subjected to only one liquid compared to sample columns subjected to two liquids. On the other hand, analysis of water and LNAPL using gravimetric analysis method gave the best result although the presence of LNAPL resulted in underestimation of water content at higher LNAPL contents. Meanwhile, the presence of LNAPL modified the bulk relative permittivity (εa) of the sample columns and resulted in overestimation of water contents measured using soil moisture sensors at higher LNAPL content. The modification of εa was used for the estimation of LNAPL using DMM. The evaluation of the model with known water and LNAPL contents and in estimating the LNAPL content of the other sample columns shows that the model could be used for the proper estimation of LNAPL in porous media. |
The influence of soil texture on the course of volume changes of soilOriginal PaperAndrej Tall, Branislav Kandra, Milan Gomboš, Dana PavelkováSoil & Water Res., 2019, 14(2):57-66 | DOI: 10.17221/217/2017-SWR Volume changes of soil associated with soil moisture changes are caused by the presence of clay minerals from illite and montmorillonite groups. Clay minerals are found in the so-called clay soil component which can be quantified by laboratory analysis of the soil particle-size distribution. Consequently, the potential for volume changes in soil can be assessed from soil texture. In our study, 172 soil samples with different textures were used to measure dependencies between volume changes in soil and changes in soil moisture under laboratory conditions. The samples were collected from 11 sites in the Eastern Slovak Lowland. On the basis of the measurements, 10 mathematical models were created to compute the correlation between volume changes of soil and soil moisture content and texture. The highest accuracy was obtained with the model which assumes the content of particles < 0.002 mm. When comparing the clay particles < 0.001 mm (colloidal clay) with the particles < 0.002 mm (colloidal + physical clay) it was also found that the particles < 0.002 mm have a larger impact on the volume changes of soil than the particles < 0.001. The inclusion of particles > 0.002 mm (silt + sand) into the models resulted in either no or only negligible refinement of the soil volume change calculations. |
