Evaluation of two chemical weed control systems in sugar beet in Germany and the Russian FederationOriginal PaperK. Bezhin, H.-J. Santel, R. GerhardsPlant Soil Environ., 2015, 61(11):489-495 | DOI: 10.17221/482/2015-PSE Roundup Ready® sugar beets are widely grown in the USA since their market introduction in 2005. The system has proven to be cost-efficient and reliable. However, the negative social image among consumers and politicians has prohibited the adoption of this technology in Europe. Seven field experiments were conducted over three years in Germany and the Russian Federation to compare weed control efficacy and sugar beet yields of post-emergent glyphosate applications with conventional selective herbicides. Although weed infestations at the Russian sites were higher than in Germany, weed control efficacies were similar at both locations ranging between 78% and 100%. Glyphosate applications resulted in significantly higher weed control efficacies than the conventional herbicides in four out of 7 experiments. In five experiments, a single glyphosate application gave equal weed control efficacy as two and three glyphosate applications. White sugar yield was always higher in the weed control treatments than in the untreated plots. There was no yield difference between treatments based on glyphosate and conventional herbicide applications in 6 out of 7 experiments. The results demonstrate a slight benefit of the glyphosate-based weed control program compared to the conventional herbicide system in terms of weed control efficacy. |
Frequency of occurrence of a certain air temperature at various sites in the Czech RepublicV. Šleger, P. NeubergerRes. Agr. Eng., 2010, 56(4):127-137 | DOI: 10.17221/4/2010-RAE The present paper analyses the problem of calculation of the average number of hours in a year during which air temperature is lower than a preselected limiting level. A method for estimating the number of hours in situations where only the minimum, average, and maximum daily temperature data are available has been suggested and tested. The work encompassed 30 sites in the Czech Republic at different altitudes and with different average temperatures, using weather data from the 1961-2000 period. The results are presented in the tabular form. It is shown that interdependence exists between the number of hours with temperatures lower than a preselected limiting level and the average yearly temperature at the specific site. For instance, temperatures below 15°C during a typical year at a site with an average yearly temperature θyr (°C) within the range of 2.8°C to 9°C can be expected (coefficient of determination 0.986) for a time τ (h) calculated from the quadratic equation τ = -12.992 × θyr 2 - 116.6 × θyr + 8,483. |
Soil pH changes in long-term field experiments with different fertilizing systemsOriginal PaperFilip VAŠÁK, Jindřich ČERNÝ, Šárka BURÁŇOVÁ, Martin KULHÁNEK, Jiří BALÍKSoil & Water Res., 2015, 10(1):19-23 | DOI: 10.17221/7/2014-SWR The changes of soil pH in long-term 14-year field experiments with different fertilizing systems are described. The field experiments were located at four sites of the Czech Republic with different soil and climatic conditions (Červený Újezd, Hněvčeves, Lukavec, and Prague-Suchdol). At each site, the same fertilizing systems and crop rotation (potatoes - winter wheat - spring barley) were established. Six experimental treatments were applied to crop rotation: (1) unfertilized treatments (control); treatments with organic fertilization: (2) farmyard manure (FYM), (3) sewage sludge (SS); treatments with mineral fertilizers: (4) nitrogen (N), (5) nitrogen with straw application (N + straw), and (6) nitrogen with phosphorus and potassium (NPK). The long-term effect of fertilizers significantly depends on soil conditions. At the site Prague-Suchdol minimal differences in the soil pH were observed by all treatments. This is caused by the high buffering capacity of Chernozems against the soil acidification. At Červený Újezd (Haplic Luvisol), Hněvčeves (Haplic Luvisol), and Lukavec (Stagnic Cambisol) sites, soil pH decreased by all treatments. Only at Hněvčeves site the soil pH did not change with N treatment. The highest soil pH decrease in the treatment with NPK (ΔpH -0.89) and N + straw (ΔpH -0.70) was observed at Hněvčeves site. By the treatments FYM and SS the highest decrease was registered at Červený Újezd (ΔpH of about -0.30 and -0.63, respectively). The highest decrease in control treatment (ΔpH of about -0.63) was observed at Lukavec site. The results showed that to evaluate long-term soil pH changes a whole complex of factors must be examined. |
Choosing an appropriate hydrological model for rainfall-runoff extremes in small catchmentsOriginal PaperPavel Kovář, Michaela Hrabalíková, Martin Neruda, Roman Neruda, Jan Šrejber, Andrea Jelínková, Hana BačinováSoil & Water Res., 2015, 10(3):137-146 | DOI: 10.17221/16/2015-SWR Real and scenario prognosis in engineering hydrology often involves using simulation techniques of mathematical modelling the rainfall-runoff processes in small catchments. These catchments are often up to 50 km2 in area, their character is torrential, and the type of water flow is super-critical. Many of them are ungauged. The damage in the catchments is enormous, and the length of the torrents is about 23% of the total length of small rivers in the Czech Republic. The Smědá experimental mountainous catchment (with the Bílý potok downstream gauge) in the Jizerské hory Mts. was chosen as a model area for simulating extreme rainfall-runoff processes using two different models. For the purposes of evaluating and simulating significant rainfall-runoff episodes, we chose the KINFIL physically-based 2D hydrological model, and ANN, an artificial neural network mathematical "learning" model. A neural network is a model of the non-linear functional dependence between inputs and outputs with free parameters (weights), which are created by iterative gradient learning algorithms utilizing calibration data. The two models are entirely different. They are based on different principles, but both require the same time series (rainfall-runoff) data. However, the parameters of the models are fully different, without any physical comparison. The strength of KINFIL is that there are physically clear parameters corresponding to adequate hydrological process equations, while the strength of ANN lies in the "learning procedure". Their common property is the rule that the greater the number of measured rainfall-runoff events (pairs), the better fitted the simulation results can be expected. |
Impact of evapotranspiration on diurnal discharge fluctuation determined by the Fourier series model in dry periodsOriginal PaperPavel KOVÁŘ, Hana BAČINOVÁSoil & Water Res., 2015, 10(4):210-217 | DOI: 10.17221/122/2015-SWR Precise measurements of discharges at the outlet of a small catchment, using high resolution sensing equipment, can currently be done without difficulty. In particular, measurements can take place even during dry periods, when high temperatures increase actual evapotranspiration on the catchment and diurnal streamflow fluctuation changes occur in a harmonic wave at any time of the day. Some 10-15 years ago, a current runoff measurement record based on a high resolution equipment clearly recognizing a diurnal wave-shape fluctuation could hardly be available. The measurement of discharge ordinates from the catchment, and from free water pan evaporation, showed an undulating fluctuation tendency. However, the discharge minima appeared at day time and their maxima at night. The measured discharge data are represented not only by a fluctuating form, but also by a mild form, an even straight line, or by a flat depletion curve. For the purpose of analyzing the wave shape of discharge we implemented the Fourier series model, simulating the measured data through the Fourier input, output, and transformation coefficients. The purpose of this analysis was to use the Fourier equations in order to substitute the missing data (when the discharge or evaporation measurements collapsed). Due to very sensitive data, when the measured discharge series are jagged, the equation can be smoothed by the harmonic approximation or by the polynomial approximation. Our study was carried out on the small experimental catchment of the Starosuchdolsky Brook, in the vicinity of the campus of the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague. The harmonic analysis provided an interesting outcome, as well as innovative methodology. |
Effects of inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis on polymorphonuclear leukocyte function and myeloperoxidase activity in horsesOriginal PaperS. Ulgen, C.P. Yaramis, E. Rayaman, U. Soyogul Gurer, M.E. Inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis (iPPVO) is currently used in equine medicine as an immunomodulator to improve the immune system and as a prophylactic treatment to prevent or treat infectious diseases. This study was designed to determine the effects of iPPVO on polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) function (phagocytosis and intracellular killing activity) and the myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity of PMNLs in horses. Twenty-four healthy English thoroughbred horses with an average age of 11 years were included in the study. Venous blood samples (10 ml) were taken before (agent-free controls) and after the administration of iPPVO (2 ml i.m. injection on Days 1, 3, and 5). PMNLs (1 × 107 cells/ml) were isolated from venous blood containing EDTA (0.1 g/ml) with Ficoll-Hypaque gradient centrifugation. Cellular phagocytosis and intracellular killing activities were assayed using a modification of Alexander's method before and after treatment with iPPVO. MPO activity was also measured. The administration of iPPVO significantly increased the phagocytic, intracellular killing, and MPO activities of equine PMNLs (P = 0.0058, P = 0.0050, and P = 0.0070, respectively). This study demonstrates a strong correlation between MPO activity and PMNL function. The administration of iPPVO to horses has a supportive effect on their cellular immunity and an immunomodulatory effect against equine viral infections. |

HayirliVet Med - Czech, 2015, 60(1):6-15 | DOI: 10.17221/7920-VETMED This study was conducted to evaluate effects of breed, parity, sampling day, and sampling time on somatic cell count (SCC) and milk lipid and protein profiles in intra-mammary infection-free early lactating dairy cows (Holstein, n = 5 and Swiss Brown, n = 6; 34 ± 6 DIM). SCC was assessed by flow cytometry. Milk lipid (free fatty acid, triacylglycerol, diacylglycerol, cholesterol, phospholipid) and protein IgG and A, albumin, caseins (α, β, κ), α-lactalbumin, and β-lactoglobulin were determined using HPTLC and SDS-PAGE methods. Data were analysed by 4-way ANOVA and subjected to hierarchical backward elimination of insignificant interaction terms. SCC varied by parity and sampling time. Apart from sampling time, other fixed factors altered milk lipids. There was only a breed × parity interaction effect on milk lipid profiles. All proposed factors affected milk proteins. Among proteins only the IgG fraction exhibited diurnal variation. There were significant breed × parity, breed × sampling day, and parity × sampling day interactions for milk proteins. In conclusion, factors relating to the cows themselves (breed and parity), sampling day, and sampling time cause variation in parameters that are pertinent to mammary gland health and milk quality. |
Effect of Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium butyricum and Lactobacillus acidophilus endospores on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, meat quality, relative organ weight, microbial shedding and excreta noxious gas emission in broilersOriginal PaperM.M. KimVet Med - Czech, 2015, 60(2):77-86 | DOI: 10.17221/7981-VETMED This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium butyricum and Lactobacillus acidophilus (tri-strain probiotics, TSP) endospores in broilers. TSP can benefit the host animal by increasing nutrient absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and altering the intestinal ecosystem in poultry. A total of 500 day-old ROSS 308 mixed sex broiler chickens with an average initial body weight (IBW) of 45 g ± 0.6 g were used in this 35-day feeding study. Broiler chickens were randomly allotted to one of five dietary treatments: (1) CON (antibiotic free diet), (2) ANT1 (CON + enramycin 5 ppm), (3) ANT2 (CON + avilamycin 5 ppm), (4) TSP1 (CON + 0.1% TSP), and (5) TSP2 (CON + 0.2% TSP) with five replicates per treatment and 20 chicks per pen. Broiler chickens fed on TSP diets exhibited linearly increasing body weight gain (BWG) and decreased feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to those on the CON diet (P < 0.05; Day 21 to Day 35 and Day 1 to Day 35, respectively). Further, dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) digestibility were improved (P < 0.05) in the TSP treatment at the end of study. The inclusion of TSP reduced (linear, P = 0.02) meat lightness (L*) compared with CON and ANT treatments. Broiler chickens fed with TSP diets had relatively higher (linear, P < 0.05) bursa weight than those fed with ANT and CON diets. The supplementation of TSP increased (P < 0.05) the ileal and caecal Lactobacillus count compared with CON and ANT diets. The ileal and caecal Escherichia coli and caecal Clostridium perfringens counts were reduced (P < 0.05) in the TSP2 group compared with the CON group. Broiler chickens fed with TSP diets exhibited increased (P < 0.05) caecal Bifidobacteria counts compared with CON and ANT diets. Excreta ammonia (NH3) gas emission was lower (P < 0.05) with the TSP treatment compared with the CON treatment. In conclusion, the supplementation of TSP improved growth performance, nutrient digestibility, meat quality, gut health and reduced noxious gas emission in broilers. |
Associations between claw lesions and reproductive performance of sows in three Greek herdsOriginal PaperM. Lisgara, V. Skampardonis, E. Angelidou, S. Kouroupides, L. LeontidesVet Med - Czech, 2015, 60(8):415-422 | DOI: 10.17221/8416-VETMED Claw lesions, which are nowadays very common in sows, are associated with a high risk of early culling and compromised welfare. In this study, we investigated the associations between the severity of claw lesions and three of the most important reproductive indicators, the number of live-born and weaned piglets and the wean-to-first service interval in three Greek farrow-to-finish herds. All studied sows were individually housed during their previous gestations. Sows were examined for lesions, which were scored on a severity scale, on several anatomical sites of the claws, before farrowing. Data on the examined reproductive indicators were retrieved from productivity databases of the herds. Because scoring of lesions on several claw sites resulted in many correlated variables for each sow examined, we employed factor analysis to create a smaller set of uncorrelated variables (factors) which contained all the information in the original variables and produced the corresponding factor scores. The number of live-born and weaned piglets was associated with the produced factor scores in two multivariable linear regression models, whereas the possible associations between the wean-to-first service interval and the factor scores was modelled with the use of zero-inflated negative binomial regression. The number of live-born piglets was negatively associated with factor scores representing lesions on heel (P ≤ 0.001) and sole of front feet (P = 0.019). The number of weaned piglets was also negatively associated with factor scores representing lesions on heel (P = 0.003) of any foot, on sole of front feet (P = 0.001) and on white line, sole and wall of rear feet (P = 0.008), while the wean-to-first service interval was associated with factor scores representing lesions on heel of any foot (P = 0.02), on sole of front feet (P = 0.02) and of dew claw length of front feet (P = 0.009). Our results indicate that combinations of lesions on the dorsal and ventral part of the claws, negatively affected the reproduction parameters considered, emphasising the importance of general improvement of feet health. |
Effects of the dexmedetomidine, midazolam, butorphanol, and atropine combination on plasma oxidative status and cardiorespiratory parameters in raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides)Case ReportX.J. FanVet Med - Czech, 2015, 60(8):450-455 | DOI: 10.17221/8420-VETMED Oxidative stress in the body occurs when the production of free radicals overwhelms the antioxidant defence systems. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a combination of dexmedetomidine, midazolam, butorphanol, and atropine (DMBA) as an anaesthetic on plasma oxidative status in twelve raccoon dogs. Baseline measures were recorded prior to anaesthesia, and then the animals were anaesthetised with the combination of dexmedetomidine (25 ug/kg), midazolam (0.45 mg/kg), butorphanol (0.25 mg/kg), and atropine (0.035 mg/kg). Temperature, respiratory rate, haemoglobin saturation by oxygen, pulse rate, systolic arterial pressure, diastolic arterial pressure, and mean arterial pressure were continually monitored. Blood pressure was significantly decreased at 30 to 60 min (P < 0.05). Pulse rate ranged from 96 to 123 bpm, without episodes of severe bradycardia or tachycardia. Blood samples were collected from saphenous venipuncture at 0, 0.5, 1, and 24 h before, during, and after anaesthesia. Plasma superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase activity, and malondialdehyde concentrations were measured by colorimetry, and plasma vitamin E level was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities increased significantly (P < 0.05) at 0.5 h, and then gradually decreased to baseline values after 1 h. Catalase activity increased significantly (P < 0.05) at 0.5 h, 1 h, and then gradually decreased to baseline values after 24 h. There was no significant change in vitamin E level (P < 0.05).The concentration of malondialdehyde decreased significantly at 0.5, 1, and 24 h after injection (P < 0.05). The results show that the administered dose of dexmedetomidine, midazolam, butorphanol, and atropine has antioxidant effects in raccoon dogs. Our study is the first to demonstrate that dexmedetomidine, midazolam, butorphanol, and atropine exert antioxidant effects, which may be exploited to alleviate the stress of examination and research at veterinary clinics. |

Overcoming the legacy of the past? Analyzing the modes of governance used by the Polish agricultural producer groupsOriginal PaperVolker BECKMANN, Ilona M. OTTO, Rong TANAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2015, 61(5):222-233 | DOI: 10.17221/190/2014-AGRICECON The cooperative movement in Poland has a long but difficult history, which has caused farmers to have an aversion to cooperatives. Nonetheless, in the early 1990s, the first farmers' cooperative marketing organizations, which were called agricultural producer groups, appeared in the market. These groups are bottom-up, voluntary organizations the primary purpose of which is to jointly sell their members' output. In this paper, it is investigated why the new forms of governance, namely cooperative arrangements, were chosen, and we evaluate the implications of these choices on the market success of these groups. Empirical data were collected from 62 producer groups in one Polish province. We found that the groups were typically functioning as associations, unions, and limited liability companies. The factors that had an impact on the choices made were the number of members and the specific investment per member. Additionally, if the initial investment level was low, not only set-up and operational costs but also tax considerations played a role in the decision. Therefore, we argue that the new bottom-up cooperatives, which are theoretically suitable when the start-up capital is high or the number of members is large, will gradually be recognized and accepted in the market despite the fact that these cooperatives have a "bad reputation" caused by the socialist legacy. The new cooperative development trend confirms this argument. |

Econ. - Czech, 2015, 61(5):234-247 | DOI: 10.17221/48/2014-AGRICECON The contribution is focused on the food problem in the least developed countries, on the chosen areas where the overall situation is the most problematic. It deals with Burundi, belonging to the low income food deficit countries with one of the world's lowest rates of the gross domestic product per capita. The paper defines the food security situation in the global connection, representing a wide complex of economic, social, demographic, technologic and political aspects of production, distribution, shift and consumption of foodstuffs. The inter-related causes of food insecurity are mainly the long lasting civil wars, a limited access to land, environmental degradation, climatic shocks and the rapid population growth resulting from the high birth rates and the return of refugees. Subsistence crops and livestock products represent the main source of income for most households. The performance of these subsectors is very low, and generates chronic food deficits. Agriculture is thus the key sector in the predominantly rural economies and there is still a significant room for growth, diversification, increasing productivity and improving competitiveness. |

Econ. - Czech, 2016, 62(8):345-3 | DOI: 10.17221/129/2015-AGRICECON In a time of a constant change, a company with high-quality, talented employees not only has an advantage in the competitive environment but it is also a more attractive proposition for the potential employees. It is also a 'great place to work' for the existing employees. The article therefore focuses on the approaches to implementing the strategic talent management which are taken by the agricultural and forestry companies. The paper investigates the position taken regarding the talent management in theory. It is based on the aims of a primary survey, the purpose of which was to develop a deeper understanding of the supporting theoretical concepts underpinning the company approaches to talent. The objective of the work is to identify the main components of the strategic talent management based on the primary survey of companies operating in agriculture and forestry. This is accomplished by evaluating the data obtained from the primary analysis of the methods and approaches used on 101 farms and other agricultural companies. The data comes from the manager surveys for which a single manager represented the given company. The mono-dimensional and multi-dimensional statistics were used to evaluate the data. The results indicate that in 62% of the companies examined are familiar with the principles of the talent management and that the talent management forms part of the mission of the company (48%). A deeper analysis is used to further examine the differences in the approach of the companies included in the study. The paper contains an in depth discussion of the concept of the strategic talent management, as well as identifying the main processes connected with it. Moreover, the paper presents new research findings by defining and validating the main attributes of the strategic talent management (TM); additionally the gap between the awareness of the top management of the talent management concept and its use in practice is found and discussed. |

Econ. - Czech, 2016, 62(9):395-406 | DOI: 10.17221/260/2015-AGRICECON The goal of the paper was to define recommendations of a suitable business strategy for SMEs in the area of primary agricultural production. First, the external environment was analysed to define suitable recommendations for the industry, and also to discover opportunities and threats through fitting strategic analyses, that affect the aforementioned businesses. Secondly, it was necessary to get familiar with the internal environment and functioning of specific businesses in the industry (namely those that operate in the Western region of Prostějov at the foot of the Drahanska Highlands) and to evaluate their efficiency to define their strengths and weaknesses. The paper demonstrates that there is a wide range of means that can be taken advantage of when defining fitting strategies for agricultural businesses, e.g. the Porter's Five Forces Model, the IFE and the IE Matrix, the SWOT Matrix as well as the general strategies by Ansoff. Among the most important recommendations for increasing the competitiveness of SMEs in the agricultural industry, there belong: taking advantage of all the suitable agricultural subsidies, taking advantage of accredited agricultural advisors, making sure that the legal requirements of governmental bodies are met, increasing revenues for arable farming (through a good quality seed stock, chemicals and fertilizers, the foundation of suitable storage facilities in order to postpone the sales of the grain after the harvest season), creating sales cooperatives/associations to balance the competing force of buyers, rejuvenating the workforce, solidifying the ownership structure in the businesses, entrepreneurial diversification (electrical energy production), increasing quality in animal farming. |

Econ. - Czech, 2017, 63(5):217-227 | DOI: 10.17221/338/2015-AGRICECON The specificity of the agricultural sector (seasonality, the methods of obtaining human resources and so on) affects the situation in the labour market. The demand of agriculture companies for qualified workers is relatively high; unfortunately, people still prefer to work in the related or other fields where they have more suitable work conditions related. Building the brand of the employer, improving the awareness of the public and increasing the loyalty of the present employees can raise the offer of vacancies and obtain new qualified employees. The aim of the paper is to identify the benefits of human resource branding in businesses arising therefrom. A partial aim is to identify the present key managerial challenges of agriculture businesses. In the work, the data collected from a questionnaire survey (n = 108) were used together with the information from the Czech Statistical Office, in the opinion of which the labour market in the agricultural sector does not exhibit a positive trend. A great variety of studies in the field of manufacturing and production process use it, but there are few applications of this methodology in the area of the supply chain management. In the paper, the philosophy of the SMED methodology is applied to the part of the supply chain that includes the spare parts and fixtures in the food sector. This involves studying the relationship with the supplier of the installation of spare parts and fixture on the machine. The study shows how the spare parts management has several phases: the coordination and purchase of the spare parts to the supplier, the storage of these spare parts, the coordination of these spare parts and the scheduled maintenance, and the installation of these spare parts on the machine. The implantation of the developed working methodology has obtained a relevant improvement in the coordination and management of the spare parts. In such a way, that storage time has been reduced (inside the company's storages) and the performance has been increased, focusing on and detailing the maintenance task and scheduling the available resources. |

Political decisions, especially these related to the agricultural sector, may be treated as of a great importance. As a consequence, farm owners seek to diversify their sources of income and run other strategies aiming to stabilize their earnings i.e. by off-farm activities. The paper selected key groups of the determinants of the off-farm income with the aim to evaluate the current state and to propose further steps of the detailed analysis. The authors identified the mechanisms how the particular instruments influence farmers' decisions on generating the off-farm income. It may be concluded that the significance of direct payments is still very high. Subsidies generally discourage farmers from the non-agriculture employment. The influence of socio-demographic characteristics is significant, however, the strength of this impact is determined by the additional factors like the situation in the labour market. In case of environmental determinants, it should be noted that there is a limited group of factors that may be out of control by the farm operators. The value added of the article is an attempt to identify the mechanisms how the particular instruments may influence farmers' decisions on generating the off-farm income. The article finishes with the authors' recommendations for further empirical studies. |

It attempts to present the partial results of a questionnaire survey whose goal was to determine the quality of HRM (Human Resource Management) departments in basic agricultural enterprises. Studies focusing on the HRM of basic agricultural enterprises have been published in many countries. In the Slovak Republic, experts and academics from the Slovak University of Technology in Nitra, and the Slovak Research Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics have arrived at perceptive conclusions on the current state of human capital in the agri-food sector and have proposed innovative directions for further development. Surprisingly, however, academia still fails to perceive HR management as a partner in an enterprise, rather than simply a service unit in the organisational structure of the agricultural enterprise. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of the role of HRM departments is missing and this paper aims to fill that gap. The methodology of research is based on Ulrich's model of the mixed roles of HR departments (2009), which is used as a framework to determine the quality levels of role performance, defined by the model, of HRM departments. The survey sample consists of 70 basic agricultural enterprises. |
The influence of national culture on changes in R&D expenses among agrochemical firmsShort CommunicationMichal JIRASEKAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2017, 63(11):524-530 | DOI: 10.17221/230/2016-AGRICECON Research and development (R&D) represents a significant expenditure and investment into the future competitiveness of a given firm. The behavioural theory of the firm assumes that these expenditures are subject to changes caused by performance feedback. This paper builds upon these assumptions and extends them by considering the possible effect of national cultures on the nature of these responses to the performance feedback. The research follows 119 firms from nine countries over the period 2001-2015 and analyses their behaviour using generalized linear mixed models. The findings mostly support an effect of national cultures, measured by Hofstede's cultural dimensions, on changes in R&D expenditure and indicate that national culture is one of the factors which needs to be taken into account when utilizing the behavioural theory of the firm. |
Collection of food relevant microscopic fungi under the Czech national programme of protection of genetic resources of economically significant microorganisms - a short reportAlena KubátováCzech J. Food Sci., 2010, 28(1):79-82 | DOI: 10.17221/235/2009-CJFS A unique project exists in the Czech Republic, namely the Czech National Programme of Protection of Genetic Resources of Economically Significant Microorganisms and Tiny Animals (NPPGR), which includes nineteen Czech collections of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi), viruses, and tiny animals. It is fully financed by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic. Under this Programme, the Culture Collection of Fungi (CCF) in Prague maintains 293 fungal strains, 225 of which are food and feed relevant fungi (e.g. toxigenic Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium verrucosum, and Fusarium sporotrichioides). The main aims of the Programme are to provide adequate protection of the microbial genetic resources that are of importance to the agriculture and food industries, to provide strains (free of charge) for the research and educational purposes, and to support the cooperation between Czech and foreign institutions. A database of all microorganisms is accessible online. |

Application of InDel markers based on the chloroplast genome sequences for authentication and traceability of tartary and common buckwheatFood Analysis, Food Quality and NutritionKwang-Soo Cho, Su-Young Hong, Bong-Kyoung Yun, Hong-Sik Won, Young-Ho Yoon, Ki-Beom Kwon, Manjulatha MekapoguCzech J. Food Sci., 2017, 35(2):122-130 | DOI: 10.17221/116/2016-CJFS A reliable, qualitative PCR-based detection method for the traceability and authentication of common and Tartary buckwheat was developed. Five InDel markers developed from chloroplast genome variation between the two species were applied for 96 buckwheat accessions and all accessions were easily differentiated as Tartary and common buckwheat using these markers. We also determined the sample detection limit by PCR and qPCR as 0.001 and 0.02 ng/µl, respectively. InDel markers could detect the mixture of two species flour up to 10% contamination. InDel markers were also applied to processed foods such as noodles and tea, and we found that species-specific PCR bands could be used to identify buckwheat even after processing. Hence, these InDel markers are simple with higher specificity and sensitivity and are reliable for the authentication of buckwheat processed foods. |

Food Sci., 2017, 35(2):160-164 | DOI: 10.17221/374/2016-CJFS We present a successful use of the plasmid inhibition detection and DNA isolation protocol optimisation for four food/feed samples in qPCR analysis of the sequence coding for chloroplast tRNA-Leu: two meat meal samples and two samples made of cranberries (jam and dried fruit). The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) can be inhibited by various substances and the DNA content in the sample can be underestimated. It is necessary to identify the PCR inhibition and choose an optimal DNA isolation protocol to correctly evaluate the sample. In a previous study, we have developed an assay using plasmid DNA carrying a non-homologous random sequence identifying possible inhibitors in qPCR in food/feed samples. The plasmid assay allowed to effectively reveal the PCR inhibition in all of the different sample matrices and to choose an optimal DNA isolation protocol. |

Food Sci., 2017, 35(5):386-391 | DOI: 10.17221/243/2016-CJFS The purpose of this investigation was the identification of chicken, beef and sheep meat in pork sausages using PCR-RFLP and PCR with pecies-specific primers. Six dry fermented pork sausages were produced by adding beef, sheep and chicken meat to each in the amount of 1 and 5%. DNA was extracted from five regions of each sausage and PCR-RFLP together with PCR using species-specific primers was performed. PCR-RFLP analysis was successful only for chicken meat, while species-specific PCR was effective for identification of chicken, eef and sheep meat in all ratios and from all regions of the sausages. The results of our study show that discovering adulteration using PCR-RFLP is suitable only for chicken meat in the investigated products, while for detection of beef and sheep meat use of species-specific oligonucleotides is more effective. |
Assessment of sensory quality of calf chops with different fat cover using a specific sensory method by a trained panelFood Analysis, Food Quality and NutritionIñaki Etaio, Pilar F. Food Sci., 2017, 35(5):392-400 | DOI: 10.17221/276/2016-CJFS Carcass fat cover is used in many countries as a predictor of meat quality, although studies relating this parameter to sensor y quality of meat are scarce and are mainly based on acceptability or palatability evaluation. The samples of calf chops with three different degrees of carcass fat cover were analysed according to a specific method for sensor y quality assessment. A trained panel evaluated the samples and scored the sensor y quality related to odour, texture, flavour, and persistence. Samples with higher carcass fat cover presented significantly better scores for texture, flavour, and persistence, although not for odour. When calculating global sensor y quality by integrating the cited parameters, significant differences were found between the three fat cover groups. Texture, f lavour, and persistence were also correlated with fat cover and marbling degree. Specific sensor y characteristics (medium tenderness, slightly tough, rancid odour, cooked meat aroma, equal or higher than fat aroma, ver y low aroma intensity, dominance of fat aroma, obvious liver aroma and milky aroma) contributed to explaining the quality differences obser ved among the groups. |

Food Sci., 2017, 35(5):466-468 | DOI: 10.17221/32/2017-CJFS The effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP1 80% O2/20% CO2 and MAP2 70% N2/30% CO2) on the selected parameters (ammonia, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances /TBARS/) and antioxidant capacity in chilled meat (2 ± 2°C) of organic chickens (breast and thigh) was evaluated. Control samples were packaged using a polyolefin film. The experiment was conducted on day 2 and repeated on day 7, 10, and 14 of storage. TBARS of samples in MAP1 were higher than in samples stored in MAP2. Ammonia in meat in MAP2 was constant during storage. In general, the DPPH inhibition percentage of meat in MAP1 was lower than that in meat in MAP2. Results of the present study indicated that MAP2 could be preferable for the packaging of organic chicken meat. |
