The aims of this study were to compare selected haemostatic and fibrinolytic parameters between healthy dogs and dogs with gastric dilatation and volvulus syndrome, estimate the incidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and determine the most sensitive test for detection of DIC in these patients. Blood was collected from 22 dogs with gastric dilatation and volvulus syndrome, and nine healthy control dogs. Platelet counts, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen concentrations and fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products were measured in all control dogs and patients with gastric dilatation and volvulus syndrome, before and after surgery. Significant differences between control dogs and patients were seen in activated partial thromboplastin time and fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products before surgery and all measured parameters after surgery. The incidence of DIC was 59%. The most sensitive tests for detection of DIC before surgery were those for activated partial thromboplastin time and fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products. |
Acardius acephalus in a goat kid - radiological and gross findings: a case reporCase ReportF. Macri, G. Lanteri, S. Ferraro, G. Marino, G. The foetus was part of a triple gestation, from which two male kids presented no morphological abnormalities and underwent regular slaughtering. X-ray examination and necropsy were performed. On the basis of gross and radiological findings the malformation was classified as acardius acephalus. In human medicine, acardius is a rare and severe abnormality reported as a unique complication of monozygotic twin pregnancies, and is known as twin-reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP). |
Pericardial mesothelioma in a German Shepherd dog: a case reportCase ReportS. Ceribasi, M. Ozkaraca, A.O. Ceribasi, H. OzerVet Med - Czech, 2013, 58(11):594-598 | DOI: 10.17221/7143-VETMED In this case report, a diagnosis of pericardial mesothelioma in a four year old male German shepherd dog is described. The dog, which had anorexia, bloody diarrhoea, dehydration and depression and, died on day 10 of therapy, was systematically necropsied. At necropsy, approximately 1.5 litres of cloudy and bloody exudate were detected in the thoracic cavity. The parietal lamina of the pericardium was covered with multilobular nodular masses related with each other, 1 to 5 cm in diameter and grey-yellow in colour. There were proliferations characterised with grey-yellow colour and approximately 1 to 5 mm in length on visceral pleura. The presence of abscess foci with liquefied-centrum was observed when examining a section surface of the lung. The appearance of the oesophageal serosa, thoracic aorta and the thoracic section of the diaphragm were similar to pleura. A thickening was microscopically determined in the parietal lamina of the pleura and pericardium due to papillary proliferations consisting of cells similar to cubic or cylindrical epithelium. Severe lymphocyte and plasma cell infiltrations were observed in the pleural sections next to the lung. Neoplastic cells had nuclei with large eosinophilic granular cytoplasms and large vesicular and single nucleoli. Some neoplastic cells were determined to include intracytoplasmic vacuoles. The neoplastic cells contained some mitotic figures. It was observed that some tumour cells contributed to giant cell formation through integration. In periodic acid Schiff-haematoxylin (PAS-H) examinations it was determined that the pleural basal membrane maintained its integrity. Immunohistochemically, the tumour gave a weak positive reaction with anti-pancytokeratin staining while giving intense reaction with anti-vimentin staining. |
Productivity of the hired and family labour and determinants of technical inefficiency in Ghana's fish farmsEdward Ebo ONUMAH, Bernhard BRÜMMER, Gabriele HÖRSTGEN-SCHWARKAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2010, 56(2):79-88 | DOI: 10.17221/38/2009-AGRICECON This paper examines the productivity of hired and family labour and determinants of technical inefficiency of fish farms in Ghana. A modified Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function which accounts for zero usage of family and hired labour is employed on cross-sectional data of 150 farmers collected in 2007. The results reveal that family labour, hired labour, feed, seed, land, other costs and extension visit have a reasserting influence on fish farm production. Findings also show that family and hired labour used for fish farming production in Ghana may be equally productive. The combined effects of operational and farm specific factors (age, experience, land, gender, pond type and education) influence technical inefficiency although individual effects of some variables may not be significant. Mean technical efficiency is estimated to be 79 percent. Given the present state of technology and input level, the possibility of enhancing production can be achieved by reducing technical inefficiency by 21 percent through adoption of practices of the best fish farm. |

Food Sci., 2008, 26(10):S49-S54 | DOI: 10.17221/248/2008-CJFS Antioxidant activity and free radicals were studied in various parts of Vitis vinifera plant in vivo and in wines using EPR spectroscopy. Antioxidative properties of polyphenolic substances play an important role for the evaluation of quality of natural products. Determination of antioxidant activity of experimental samples by EPR method was based on measuring the changes of EPR spectrum of stable nitroxide radicals as a result of their interaction with antioxidants. In the leaves of Vitis vinifera vine varieties for the production of red wines there was observed a higher decrease in free Tempol radicals as compared to the leaves of varieties used for the production of white wines. For all monitored wines there was established a clear decrease in free Tempol radicals to the average value of 75.5 ± 15.6% as compared to the original EPR spectrum. A higher antioxidant activity was observed in yeast sediments from the production of red wines than in those from white ones. |

In this work, the influence was investigated of different types of pectin on colour and textural properties in strawberry jams and low-calorie strawberry jams containing fructose and aspartame or fructose syrup and aspartame. The highest anthocyanin content and total phenol content were detected in strawberry jam samples prepared with low methoxy amidated pectin. During storage, after 4 and 6 weeks at both storage temperatures, room temperature and 4°C, anthocyanin content and total phenol content decreased. Also, free radical scavenging activity decreased during storage. As far as the texture parameters are concerned, namely firmness, consistency and cohesiveness, the highest values were found in strawberry jam samples prepared with high methoxyl pectin. |
Effect of Closure, Packaging and Storage Conditions on Impact Odorants of WineG. J. Pickering, A. Blake, Y. KotseridisCzech J. Food Sci., 2009, 27(10):S62-S65 | DOI: 10.17221/1104-CJFS 3-alkyl-2-methoxypyrazines (MPs) represent an important and potent class of odor-active compounds associated with wine quality. 30 ng/l each of 3-isobutyl-2-methoxypyrazine, 3-isopropyl-2-methoxypyrazine and 3-secbutyl-2-methoxypyrazine were added to a Riesling and Cabernet Franc wine and monitored with HS-SPME-GC-MS over 18 months to investigate the effects of various closure and packaging options as well as light and storage temperature on MPs. Other impact odorants were monitored using SPE-GC-FID. Changes in MP concentrations during bottle aging varied with closure/packaging option, with the greatest decrease evident in Tetrapak® cartons. We observed similar changes in other impact odorants to previous studies, with synthetic corks displaying an increased capacity for sorption compared to natural corks and screwcaps. MPs did not vary consistently over time with light or temperature conditions. Acetate esters decreased, regardless of light or temperature conditions, while phenethyl acetate and isoamyl acetate decreased at a greater rate in ambient temperature conditions compared with 12°C. Free and bound SO2 retention was higher in light-excluded conditions and influenced by bottle hue. |

Food Sci., 2009, 27(11):SII12-SII17 | DOI: 10.17221/676-CJFS A collection of lactic acid bacteria (38 Enterococcus and 41 Lactobacillus strains) was tested for the antilisterial activity against 15 Listeria spp. strains (two L. monocytogenes, one L. ivanovii and 12 L. innocua strains) using agar spot method. Out of all 79 bacteria only six Enterococcus strains (1/3A, 3/3A, 6/4D, 6/1A, 1282 and EN3) exhibited antilisterial activity against almost all used indicator strains, when their live cells were tested. When their cell free neutralised supernatants (CFNS) were tested against four selected indicator strains (L. innocua Ln-03, Ln-06, Ln-10 and L. monocytogenes CCM5576) only two Enterococcus spp. strains were active - E. faecalis 6/1A strain from raw cow milk of minor interest due to the activity of its CFNS only against L. innocua Ln-06 and thermolability of the compound and E. mundtii 1282 strain from goat raw milk with CFNS active against 13 Listeria spp. strains including L. monocytogenes. E. mundtii 1282 strain produced probably a bacteriocin, because it completely lost the activity after treatment CFNS with proteinase K. |
Antioxidant activity of selected phenols and herbs used in diets for medical conditionsDiana Chrpová, Lenka Kouřimská, Michael Harry Gordon, Veronika Heřmanová, Iva Roubíčková, Jan PánekCzech J. Food Sci., 2010, 28(4):317-325 | DOI: 10.17221/129/2010-CJFS The antioxidant capacity of some herbs used in dietology practice was determined by the DPPH free radical method, which was calibrated with ascorbic acid. Partially hydrophilic phenolic compounds are the most active compounds in plants, and therefore water was used as the extraction agent. Besides antioxidant capacity, the content of total phenolic compounds was also measured and a strong correlation between these two variables was found. The extracts of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.), oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), Greek oregano (Origanum heracleoticum L.), sage (Salvia officinalis L.) and winter savory (Satureja montana L.) showed very significant activity. It was comparable with the activity of green tea in the case of oregano and peppermint. Lower activity was observed in the case of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), marjoram (Majorana hortensis), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.), sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum), and lovage (Levisticum officinale Koch.). The inhibitory activity of the herb extracts was monitored also during the autooxidation of lard. Very high antioxidant capacity was observed mainly in sage samples, but also in marjoram and Greek oregano. The extracts of peppermint, oregano, rosemary, winter savory, lemon balm and hyssop showed middle activity comparable to that of α-tocopherol. The antioxidant capacity of sweet basil and lovage was insignificant. |
Biochemical parameters and oxidative resistance to thermal treatment of refined and unrefined vegetable edible oilsRajko Vidrih, Sergeja Vidakovič, Helena AbramovičCzech J. Food Sci., 2010, 28(5):376-384 | DOI: 10.17221/202/2008-CJFS In human nutrition fats are physiologically important food constituents but also the components most liable to oxidative degradation. The oils included in the study were refined (sunflower, extra-sunflower, soybean, and rapeseed) as well as unrefined (olive and pumpkin-seed) oils. The aim of our study was to determine the fatty acid composition, tocopherol content, and quality parameters such as the free fatty acid content, peroxide value, and induction time. Extra virgin olive oil had the highest average peroxide value, while unrefined pumpkin seed oil had the lowest one. The acid value of the unrefined oils was higher on average than that of the refined oils. Soybean oil had the highest total tocopherol content and extra virgin olive oil the lowest one. The refined oils with higher contents of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids and lower polyunsaturated fatty acid contents had a high oxidative stability. A negative correlation has been found in the oils between the induction time and polyunsaturated fatty acid content. Among the oils investigated, unrefined pumpkin seed oil was the most oxidatively stable, the other oils following in the decreasing order: extra virgin olive > high oleic sunflower > rapeseed > soybean > sunflower oil. The oxidative stability of the unrefined oils was better than that of the refined oils. |
Effect of milk chocolate supplementation with lyophilised Lactobacillus cells on its attributesDorota Żyżelewicz, Ewa Nebesny, Ilona Motyl, Zdzisława LibudziszCzech J. Food Sci., 2010, 28(5):392-406 | DOI: 10.17221/217/2009-CJFS Manufacturing of novel foodstuffs supplemented with live probiotic bacteria has recently been intensively investigated. The supplementation of confectionery with probiotics is troublesome since some unit technological processes are conducted at high temperatures and the products are usually stored at ambient temperature. Our group has developed a method of the production of milk chocolate, sweetened with either sucrose or isomalt and aspartame, containing 32, 36, or 40 g/100 g fat, and supplemented with live cells of probiotic bacterial strains: Lactobacillus casei and paracasei. This new milk chocolate displayed the same sensory properties as the reference, probiotic-free chocolate. The number of live bacterial cells was maintained at the functional level of 106 / 108 cfu/g after keeping for 12 months irrespective of the temperature. The highest number of live probiotic bacteria survived in the chocolate kept at 4°C. Thus the product can be regarded as functional food. |

(i) Which width of adaptation? Genotype נlocation interaction is region-specific and may be wide enough to justify breeding for specific adaptation. Genotype נexploitation interaction requires contrasting plant types for mowing and intensive grazing. (ii) Can we breed very drought-tolerant varieties? One drought-tolerant landrace exhibited a drought-avoidance, water-conservation strategy based on limited root development, while large root featured material adapted to favourable environments and/or frequent mowing. (iii) Which selection scheme and variety type? Many schemes were proposed for synthetic varieties, but empirical or theoretical comparisons were limited in number and inference space. Non-additive genetic variation may be exploited by free hybrids (semi-hybrids) through procedures varying in complexity, possibly assisted by marker evaluation. Previous selection of exotic germplasm for adaptation is essential. (iv) How to improve the forage quality? Selection for modified stem morphology (increased internode number, decreased internode length) proved effective. Combined selection for forage yield and leaf/stem ratio seems also feasible. (v) Which opportunities for marker-assisted selection? Linkage maps for lucerne are available but useful markers for forage yield may be site-specific. Bulk segregant analysis is promising in breeding for stress tolerance. (vi) How to exploit genomic information from M. truncatula? This model species can help in developing markers and locating genes which control metabolic pathways, such as saponin content and composition. Information from M. truncatula on marker-trait association for forage yield or tolerance to abiotic stresses may be little exploitable. |
The impact of cultivar resistance and fungicide treatment on mycotoxin content in grain and yield losses caused by Fusarium head blight in wheatOriginal PaperVáclav Šíp, Jana Chrpová, Ondřej Veškrna, Ludmila BobkováCzech J. Plant Breed., 2010, 46(1):21-26 | DOI: 10.17221/93/2009-CJGPB Reactions to artificial infection with Fusarium graminearum isolates and a new fungicide Swing Top were studied in nine winter wheat cultivars evaluated in field experiments at two sites for three years for expression of symptoms, deoxynivalenol (DON) content in grain and grain yield. The results demonstrate a pronounced and relatively stable effect of cultivar resistance on reducing head blight, grain yield losses and contamination of grain by the mycotoxin DON. It is advantageous that the moderate level of resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB) was detected also in two commonly grown Czech cultivars Sakura and Simila. Average fungicide efficacy for DON was 49.5% and 63.9% for a reduction in yield loss, however, it was found highly variable in different years and sites. The joint effect of cultivar resistance and fungicide treatment was 86.5% for DON and even 95.4% for reducing the yield loss. A very high risk was documented for susceptible cultivars and also the effects of medium responsive cultivars were found to be highly variable in different environments and therefore not guaranteeing sufficient protection against FHB under different conditions. |
Results of projects on collecting, mapping, monitoring, and conserving of plant genetic resources 1990-2008V. Holubec, P. Hauptvogel, F. Paprštein, W. Podyma, M. Ševčíková, T. VymyslickýCzech J. Genet. Plant Breed., 2010, 46(10):S2-S8 | DOI: 10.17221/2673-CJGPB Old landraces and obsolete cultivars represent a national heritage that must be conserved for future generations. Similarly, crop wild relatives (CWR) are a valuable gene pool for plant breeding or for direct introduction as a new crop. These materials have been mapped, collected, evaluated, regenerated, and conserved in the Gene Bank. In total, 3726 seed and vegetative samples have been collected in the Czech Republic, as well as 1582 abroad (in Slovakia, Poland and Austria) during cross-border cooperation projects. All collecting sites (over 1000) were located by GPS and plotted using the Geobaze Professional 2.8 mapping software. Altogether, 688 samples were declared as a national collection, and 627 seed accessions were conserved in the Gene Bank. In addition, 842 accessions of fruits were recommended for in situ conservation. Selected species of the families Poaceae, Fabaceae, and Alliaceae, which are rare or threatened in the Czech Republic, have been monitored in situ for 3-5 years. Two sites were suggested for protection as new protected areas. |
Study of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) quality for feeding ruminants using in vitro and in vivo methodsJ. Pozdíšek, K. VaculováCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2008, 53(6):253-264 | DOI: 10.17221/359-CJAS : Nutrient digestibility and parameters of nutritive value for ruminants of two winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars were evaluated by means of an in vivo balance trial performed by the regression method on two groups of heifers with an increasing proportion of grain in DM (from 6 to 46%). Sulamit and Rapsodia, chosen on the basis of the in vitro test from a set of 25 cultivars (grown in 2002-2004) reached significant differences in DM fermentability in vitro (by 43.7-78.6 ml/g DM, P < 0.05). In vivo digestibility of crude protein, nitrogen-free extract, organic matter, parameters of N retention, energy concentrations (metabolisable energy, net energy for lactation and for fattening) and parameters in the PDI system (especially PDIE) increased along with the grain proportion in the diet. At the comparable proportion of grain in the ration the positive differences were significantly higher (P < 0.05) for Sulamit than Rapsodia. |
Longitudinal patterns in fish and macrozoobenthos assemblages reflect degradation of water quality and physical habitat in the Bílina river basinP. Jurajda, Z. Adámek, M. Janáč, Z. ValováCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2010, 55(3):123-136 | DOI: 10.17221/14/2009-CJAS The aim of this study was to provide the first account of fish and macroinvertebrate communities in a heavily degraded river basin in the Czech Republic. Fish and macrozoobenthos were surveyed at 18 sites in the Bílina River and 11 sites in tributary streams during June-July 2007. Fish were sampled by electrofishing and macrozoobenthos were collected by kick-sampling using a sweep net. The composition of macroinvertebrate assemblages in headwater and reference sites in the upper Bílina River indicated clean water with saprobic index (SI) 1.31-1.43 followed by a transitional stretch downstream the Kyjická reservoir (SI 2.05-2.32) and dramatic decline of water quality to SI 3.18 in the river stretch downstream of industrial and municipal pollution at Litvínov-Záluží. Despite several minor pollution sources on the subsequent downstream river stretch until its mouth into the Elbe River, the water quality indicators fluctuated in the range of lower betamesosaprobity (SI 2.06-2.58). Species richness and biodiversity indices followed a similar pattern as river saprobity. Twenty-three fish species were documented in the Bílina River basin. Chub (Leuciscus cephalus), gudgeon (Gobio gobio) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) were the most frequent species at the Bílina sites. Chub was the most numerous fish in the tributaries. Fish species richness in the longitudinal profile did not increase downstream in the Bílina mainstem, most likely because the presence of reservoirs and water pollution interrupted the river continuum pattern. Qualitative data on fish assemblages corresponded to the course of environmental stress. A sustainable fish community was documented only in the lowermost site in Ústí nad Labem near the confluence with the Elbe River. The Bílina River tributaries constitute potential refuges for fish in this basin. |
Comparison of PRKAG3 and RYR1 gene effect on carcass traits and meat quality in Slovenian commercial pigsM. Škrlep, T. Kavar, M. Čandek-PotokarCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2010, 55(4):149-159 | DOI: 10.17221/6/2009-CJAS The effect of polymorphisms at PRKAG3 (R200Q and I199V) and RYR1 (R615C) genes on carcass traits and meat quality was examined in a sample of 257 commercial pigs, crosses of Landrace × Large White as maternal line and Pietrain (N = 96), Pietrain × Landrace (N = 42) or Pietrain × Hampshire (N = 119) as paternal line. Pigs were genotyped (PCR-RFLP) and traits of interest were measured (which included carcass and ham weight, measurements of fatness, meatiness, ultimate pH, colour parameters and drip loss). The observed genotype frequencies at PRKAG3 gene were 9.7%, 38.9%, 32.7%, 6.2% and 12.5% for R/R-I/I, R/R-I/V, R/R-V/V, Q/R-I/V and Q/R-V/V genotype, respectively. RYR1 genotype frequencies were 57.2% for N/N and 42.8% for N/n genotype. Studied polymorphisms exhibited a significant effect on meat quality, but mainly an insignificant effect on carcass traits. No significant interaction between PRKAG3 and RYR1 was found. Carriers of RYR1 mutant allele "n" had less intense longissimus dorsi muscle colour (subjective score, Minolta L* and b*) and higher drip loss. Regarding PRKAG3, the ultimate pH decreased and Minolta L*, a*, b* and drip loss increased in the following order: R/R-I/I, R/R-I/V, R/R-V/V, Q/R-I/V and Q/R-V/V, according to the presence of 199I and absence of 200Q alleles. The study shows that the I199V polymorphism is an important source of variation in pigs free of 200Q. In particular the 199I proves beneficial for meat quality. The results of combining the RYR1 and PRKAG3 genotypes indicate that R/R-I/I genotype could be used in counterbalancing the negative effects of "n" allele on meat quality. |

Sci., 2010, 55(11):463-467 | DOI: 10.17221/1714-CJAS Milk components originating from blood plasma substrates are synthesized in epithelial cells of the mammary gland. Milk lipids are synthesized from fatty acids which bind to specific proteins - FABPs (fatty acid binding proteins). FABPs are a family of small cytoplasmic proteins; nine members of the family have been identified so far (FABP1-FABP9) (Chmurzyńska et al., 2006). Their main roles include fatty acid uptake, transport and metabolism. FABPs can modulate the fatty acid concentration in cells and therefore they affect different cellular processes, especially lipid metabolism. FABP3 and FABP4 are present in tissues with a high demand for fatty acids, such as heart muscle, skeletal muscles, lactating mammary gland, liver or adipose tissue (Roy et al., 2003). FABP3 gene was mapped to bovine chromosome 2 (Calvo et al., 2004), where QTLs affecting milk fat yield and content were described (Khatkar et al., 2004). FABP4 gene was mapped to BTA14 (Michal et al., 2006), which is very rich in QTLs for milk production traits (Khatkar et al., 2004). Fatty acid transport is assisted by the specific proteins called FATPs (fatty acid transport proteins). This protein group includes SLC27A3 (solute carrier family 27, member 3). It belongs to the family of proteins that facilitate long-chain fatty acid transport across the cytoplasmic membrane. Another protein with similar functions is ANXA9 (annexin A9), the member of Ca2+ and phospholipid-binding protein family (Calvo et al., 2006b). Genes encoding SLC27A3 and ANXA9 were mapped to chromosome 3, within the region where QTLs for milk fat content and the other milk traits have been mapped. Both of the above-mentioned genes are expressed in the mammary gland (Calvo et al., 2006b). The polymorphic sites (SNPs - single nucleotide polymorphisms) within the bovine FABP3, FABP4, SLC27A3 and ANXA9 genes were identified (Wu et al., 2005; Calvo et al., 2006b; Michal et al., 2006; Cho et al., 2008). Associations between SNPs in these genes and milk production traits in cattle have not been reported so far. However, polymorphism in the FABP4 gene has been significantly associated with carcass traits in cattle (Michal et al., 2006; Cho et al., 2008). Due to their expression sites, physiological properties and chromosomal localisation, the described genes might be considered as candidate genes for milk production traits. The aim of this study was to determine allele and genotype frequencies and to establish possible associations between the ANXA9, SLC27A3, FABP3 and FABP4 SNPs, and selected milk traits in Jersey cows. |
Relationship between antiradical activity, polyphenolic antioxidants and free trans-resveratrol in grapes (Vitis vinifera L.)M. Šulc, J. Lachman, A. Hejtmánková, M. OrsákHort. Sci. (Prague), 2005, 32(4):154-162 | DOI: 10.17221/3782-HORTSCI Contents of polyphenolic antioxidants as total polyphenols (TP), free trans-resveratrol (R) and their antiradical activity (ARA) in grape skins and seeds of grape varieties and TP in grape musts originating from 5 wine-growing Czech areas from the harvest 2003 were determined. TP content was determined spectrophotometrically with phenol Folin-Ciocalteau's reagent, R content by HPLC method, and ARA employing the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl stable free radical (DPPH.). Obtained results were evaluated statistically by Statistica programme. TP did not show any statistically significant differences between the analysed varieties (p < 0.05) in grape seeds and skins, but regarding wine-growing regions a significant difference in TP (p < 0.10) in grape skins was found. ARA (p < 0.05) was not significant either for grape seeds or for grape skins in relation to wine-growing regions and varieties. The highest TP contents were found in grape seeds (536.6 mg/g DM), whereas R contents were higher in the skins (av. 1.67 μg/kg DM). Blue grape varieties showed a higher TP content in grape skins and also in must as compared with white grape varieties. The assessment of ARA of extracts of model constituents of grapes tannin (T) and gallic acid (GA) revealed their higher antiradical activity in comparison with ascorbic acid (AA). |

It is characterized by considerable morphological and genetic variation. The crop comprises seven main groups of cultivars (including oilseed lettuce) differing phenotypically; they are usually described as morphotypes. Lettuce breeding is primarilly focused on various morphological features and resistance against diseases and pests. The accurate description of lettuce germplasm provides basic information useful for lettuce breeders. The construction of a lettuce descriptor list has been stimulated by the international genebank community. This list consists of 55 descriptors with 15 elucidated by figures. It provides a tool for detailed characterization of and discrimination within the intraspecific variation of L. sativa, verification of old varieties, and identification of putative duplicates and gaps in germplasm collections. These descriptors, along with descriptors of wild Lactuca species, provide an efficient analytical tool for studying the complex morphological variability of this genus and relationships among the species. |
Occurrence and correction of chlorosis in young petunia plantsF. Šrámek, M. DubskýHort. Sci. (Prague), 2009, 36(4):147-153 | DOI: 10.17221/6/2009-HORTSCI : A glasshouse pot experiment tested the effects of 14 different combinations of substrate type, pH and nutrient treatments on the occurrence and severity of leaf chlorosis in a susceptible variety of petunia. Plants grown at optimal pH level (4.7) in peat substrate with low limestone dose were symptom-free even without added micronutrients. Severe chlorosis occurred in plants grown at high pH in peat substrate with high limestone (pH 6.7) and in peat-bark-compost (pH 6.2); it was associated with decreased Fe and Mn content in leaves. Regular application of nutrient solution with low concentration of Fe, Mn, and other micronutrients as EDTA chelates greatly reduced chlorosis in plants grown in peat-bark substrate and in peat-bark-compost, and it improved Fe uptake. An exception was peat substrate at high pH level and high limestone where chlorosis was only partially reduced by this treatment. Regular application of Fe, Mn, and other micronutrients as sulphates or citrates had no substantial effect; only application of three additional substrate drenches of 30 mg/l Mn from Mn-EDTA and 90 mg/l Fe from either Fe-EDTA or Fe-EDDHA substantially corrected chlorosis and increased foliar Fe and Mn in cases where plants were grown in high limestone peat substrate. |
The characteristics of diameter growth and increment of introduced North American ash species at the sites of common alderD. Kremer, J. Čavlović, I. AnićJ. For. Sci., 2005, 51(6):237-243 | DOI: 10.17221/4559-JFS Research was conducted into diameter growth and increment of introduced American ash species at the sites of common alder (Alnus glutinosa[L.] Gaertn.) in three mixed stands of introduced ash and common alder in the lowland part of Croatia. About 10 samples of increment cores of each species were taken from trees in the diameter class of the mean basal area. In the process, an attempt was made to reach the centre of the trees with the purpose of getting an insight into the development of the trees over a long period, i.e. from the moment when the trees reached breast height. The increment cores were analysed by measuring the width of each individual ring to the tenth of the millimetre. Bark thickness was also measured. The results obtained from the analysis of the increment cores yielded trends of ring widths for individual trees as well as trends of the average ring widths for each species within a locality. On the basis of the increment core analysis, parts of the diameter growth curve of the mean stand tree were obtained. The increment curve of mean stand diameter was obtained by deriving the growth curve of mean stand diameter. Introduced ash was found to have average ring widths from 0.92 to 4.21 mm. The measured minimal and maximal values of ring widths in total were 0.2 and 6.5 mm, respectively. Consequently, introduced ash may have significantly large ring widths in conditions of prolonged flooding as well. Therefore, its pioneering role is not irrelevant at poor sites naturally inhabited by common alder. The average ring width of introduced ash is the highest up to the age of 30 years, after which it retains the value of 2 mm or less. In common alder, the average ring width in the studied stand ranged from 1.40 to 4.59 mm. The measured minimal and maximal values of ring widths in total were 0.4 and 7.0 mm, respectively. A comparison of average ring widths of introduced ash and common alder revealed that in Draganić locality common alder had a statistically significantly larger average ring width than introduced ash. In the localities Karlovac and Đurđevac the difference was not statistically significant. |
Soil and plant communities development and ecological effectiveness of reclamation on a sand mine castM. PietrzykowskiJ. For. Sci., 2008, 54(12):554-565 | DOI: 10.17221/38/2008-JFS The aim of the study was to assess terrestrial ecosystem development (mainly vegetation and soil characteristics) in the area of a sand mine cast (located in southern Poland) that has been either reclaimed or left for natural succession. A total of 20 sites in a chronosequence of 5, 17, 20 and 25 years were set up in two site categories: reclaimed and non-reclaimed sites. Selected properties of initial soils and features of vegetation were measured and they included carbon accumulation in soil; biomass and diversity of communities were also estimated. Next, based on carbon accumulation, the energy trapped in ecosystem components was estimated. Although the results of plant community investigation did not show the same distinct differences between site categories, the case study suggests that reclamation significantly accelerates ecosystem development. In comparison with spontaneous succession, the complete forest reclamation was found to increase the amount of carbon accumulation, thickness of humus horizon, and energy trapped in soil organic carbon and plant biomass in the developing ecosystem 2-3 times and nitrogen accumulation 5 times. |
Ecological requirements of some ant species of the genus Formica (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in spruce forestsA. Véle, J. Holuša, J. FrouzJ. For. Sci., 2009, 55(1):32-40 | DOI: 10.17221/56/2008-JFS Five types of stand stages (clearings-samplings, plantations, thinnings, thickets, and mature forests) of spruce forests were examined at the foothills of the Jizerské hory Mts. in summer 2005 and 2006. The presence of ants was surveyed by catching them into pitfall traps and observing on baits. Higher numbers of Formica fusca ants were found in clearings-samplings and in plantations. Their activity was higher at the soil and air temperature of 20-30°C. The peak of activity was observed in July. Most specimens were trapped at lighter habitats and in the sites with more than 50% herbaceous and gramineous vegetation cover. F. pratensis was trapped in plantations and thickets. It was active at the soil temperatures 12-21°C and air temperatures 16-25°C. It occurred both in dark and light areas. F. sanguinea most commonly occurred in thinnings. This species was the most active at the soil temperature 20-30°C. Its activity depending on air temperature grew almost linearly. It occurred both in dark and in light stand stages with at least 60% vegetation cover. F. truncorum was observed only in thinnings. The activity of F. truncorum was the highest at the air and soil temperatures 15-25°C. The peak of activity was recorded in July. It was observed only in stands with the quantity of incident radiation 1,030 lx and with 20-80% of undergrowth cover. |
Arginine and the shade tolerance of white spruce saplings entering winter dormancyD. J. DurzanJ. For. Most free amino acid N was found in roots in saplings at full light, and the least at 13% light. Glutamate, glutamine, and aspartate N contributed to the accumulation of soluble arginine N. Arginine-derived γ-guanidinobutyric acid, agmatine and an unidentified guanidino compound accumulated mainly in stems with buds at 25 and 13% light. The profiling N metabolism and arginine-derived guanidino compounds extend models for shade tolerance based mainly on photosynthesis, respiration and carbon gain. |

Regel as a species, whose biological properties are vital for its survival. In the Svyatoi Nos Peninsula, three sites differing in altitude were selected. At all sites the growth form of P. pumila was determined. At the high and medium sites, the following parameters were measured: linear increment on terminal branches, leaf mass per area and the content of nitrogen per unit leaf area. Anatomical studies were carried out on shoots and four needle-year classes. It was found that needles were longer and narrower at the medium site when compared to the high site. Leaf mass per area was higher and a substantial increase in older needles occurred at the high site. Nitrogen content per unit leaf area served as an indicator of assimilation capacity and was higher at the high site. We can conclude that P. pumila has xeromorphic needles, higher assimilation capacity, better protection ability against pathogens and slower growth rate of terminal branches at the high site. Important is also a significant increment of the growth rate of terminal branches at the high site in recent years. Therefore, data obtained from sites at the upper forest limit are valuable in assessing the climate changes and are useful for the forest management practice in mountain areas. |
Possibilities of using the portable falling weight deflectometer to measure the bearing capacity and compaction of forest soilsR. Klvač, P. Vrána, R. JiroušekJ. For. Sci., 2010, 56(3):130-136 | DOI: 10.17221/71/2009-JFS The paper discusses possibilities of using the portable falling weight deflectometer to measure the bearing capacity and compaction of forest soils. Within the study, measurements were made using manual penetrometer and Loadman II portable falling weight deflectometer. To eliminate the extreme values, Grubbs's test was used. The results indicate that Loadman II deflectometer may be used to measure both the bearing capacity and compaction of forest soils under the canopy as well as in transport lines. A significant difference was found between deflection of water-unaffected sites and water-affected sites (12.08 and 2.31 mm, respectively). Measurements of bearing capacity after removal of forest litter give far more precise details; however, the authors do not refuse the measurements without litter removal, either. To determine the degrees of soil compaction, it is useful to measure the soil reaction time; to measure the bearing capacity it is vital to measure deflection. |
Soil preparation by ploughing in the floodplain forest and its influence on vegetation and primary soil characteristicsJ. Libus, O. Mauer, D. VavříčekJ. For. Sci., 2010, 56(4):183-196 | DOI: 10.17221/46/2009-JFS The paper analyzes the effect of whole-area site preparation by ploughing and of alternate field and forest crops on the understorey, soil biological activity and physical and chemical characteristics in the commercial forest. Another factor of the study was to assess the effect of the clearcut size on forest stands. Analyzed were 20-years-old stands of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur [L.]) on alluvial sites 1L9 (Fraxino pannonicae-Ulmetum). It can be deduced from the conducted analyses that after twenty years neither different site preparation nor clearcut size affected the understorey and soil biological activity. Field crops and forestry in alternation had a significantly adverse effect on porosity and water-retention capacity in the lower layer of top-soil (25-30 cm). Whole-area ploughing had a negative influence on the loss of organic substances due to accelerated mineralization. Nevertheless, the observed differences are not significant; the values did not fall below critical limits and in no case did they affect other studied site parameters or the development of root systems and aboveground parts of oak trees. |
The effect of point application of fertilizerson the soil environment of spread line windrows in the Krušné hory MtsD. Vavříček, J. Pecháček, P. Jonák, P. SamecJ. For. Sci., 2010, 56(5):195-208 | DOI: 10.17221/66/2009-JFS The plateau of the Krušné hory Mts. belongs to areas that suffered the greatest damage caused by air-pollution stresses in Europe. A part of cultural practices aimed at the reconstruction of local mountain forests was the inconsiderate use of bulldozer technologies for the preparation of sites for forest stand restoration. In the course of large-scale scarification the top-soil horizons were moved into line windrows, which caused marked degradation of the soil environment. The present revitalization of the soil environment is based on the principle of spreading these man-made windrows. Experimental plots were established in localities affected by scarification; the organomineral material from windrows was superimposed on them and subsequently they were reforested with Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.). In 2005 the point application of fertilizer tablets of Silvamix type in three treatments and calcic dolomite was performed into the rhizosphere of plants. Before fertilization and after three years of the experiment soil samples were taken from the organomineral zone of the root balls of plants, and the condition of the soil environment on spread windrows and changes in pedochemical properties as a result of applied fertilization were evaluated. Three years after the windrow spreading the content of the majority of soil macrobiogenic elements (N, K, Ca, Mg) is at the level of medium-high to high reserves, and only the low phosphorus reserves pose a certain hazard. The organomineral substrate of spread windrows is a suitable growth environment for the root systems of target tree species. The proportion of humus substances is the most important factor in spread windrows from which the characteristics of the other parameters of soil are derived. Along with the higher proportion of humus substances in Špičák locality significantly higher reserves of major macrobiogenic elements (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) were determined. The applied fertilizers of Silvamix type significantly increased the reserves of soil P, K, Ca, Mg and are a suitable means for the stimulation of spruce plantations in the restored environment of the Krušné hory Mts. Silvamix Forte fertilizer tablets are the most complex fertilizer with the most balanced effects that significantly increases the reserves of soil P, Mg and K. This fertilizer has a high effect on an increase in the reserves of soil phosphorus that may be deficient in conditions of spread windrows. Silvamix R is the most efficient fertilizer to increase potassium reserves. A positive effect of calcic dolomite on an increase in Ca and Mg content was observed while no such effect on the other elements was recorded. |
Differences in the structure, species composition and diversity of primary and harvested forests on Changbai Mountain, Northeast ChinaDONGKAI SU, DAPAO YU, LI ZHOU, XIAOKUI XIE, ZHENGGANG LIU, LIMIN DAIJ. For. Sci., 2010, 56(6):285-293 | DOI: 10.17221/84/2009-JFS Broadleaved-Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) mixed forest is a typical vegetation type in the eastern Eurasian continent. We compared the structure, composition and diversity of a primary forest and a logged forest for effective management and regeneration of a mixed forest ecosystem on Changbai Mountain, Northeast China. The logged forest was subjected to selective harvesting twenty years ago. The mean diameter and basal area for overall trees (≥ 2 cm dbh) were higher in the primary forest than in the logged forest, whereas overall tree density was significantly lower in the former (994 ± 34 trees∙ha-1) than in the logged forest (1921 ± 79 trees∙ha-1). The values of species richness and both Simpson's and Shannon's diversity indices for seedlings (< 2 cm dbh, ≥ 50 cm tall), saplings (2-9.9 cm dbh) and overall trees were greater in the primary forest. These results indicate that the selective logging had a lasting impact on the structural characteristics of the forest. There were major differences in species composition between the two forest sites, with the logged forest having more pioneer and mid-tolerant species than the primary forest. Diversity was more extensive in the logged forest due to the invasion of pioneer species. Twenty years is clearly an insufficient time for the logged forest to regain "primary" forest composition and structure. These two characteristics of the primary forest may serve as a reference for developing management plans for forest regeneration. |
