Study of biochemical variability of potato cultivars by soluble protein, isoesterase, and isoperoxidase electrophoretic patternsJ. Bárta, V. Čurn, J. DivišPlant Soil Environ., 2003, 49(5):230-236 | DOI: 10.17221/4118-PSE Biochemical variability between thirteen European and five Czech potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars grown in theCzechRepublic was studied by soluble protein, isoesterase, and isoperoxidase electrophoretic patterns. It was confirmed that cultivar differences in protein polymorphism can be revealed by applied electrophoretic patterns. It was shown that the different character of protein and isozyme profiles required different approaches to their evaluation. For complex patterns such as electrophoretic soluble protein spectra, it is more convenient to use the evaluation of their absorbance profiles and for simpler profiles of isozymes the evaluation based on the presence or absence of a band in a definite position (simple matching) should be used. In spite of the complexity of tetraploid disposition of analysed cultivars, the results suggested higher similarity of profiles between relative cultivars and they also indicated the existence of higher similarity between cultivars from the same breeding firm. |
Adaptation of Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei to barley resistance genes in the Czech Republic in 1971-2000A. DreiseitlPlant Soil Environ., 2003, 49(6):241-248 | DOI: 10.17221/4120-PSE Results of scoring the resistance of 35 selected spring barley varieties to powdery mildew, exhibiting high powdery mildew severity, in 307 variety trials of the Central Institute for Supervising and Testing in Agriculture were analysed. The varieties can be divided into two groups: the varieties that could not induce any changes in the pathogen population (the varieties with no effective resistance gene and varieties carrying gene mlo) and the varieties possessing major resistance genes [a total of 12 Ml-genes: a1, a3, a6, a7, a9, a12, a13, at, k1, La, g and (Kr)] to which the pathogen population adapted in 1971-2000. The time slope of decreasing resistance of varieties is described. The importance of individual evolutionary forces (mutations, migration, direct selection, indirect selection and recombinations) for the erosion of efficiency of respective major resistance genes and the effects of pathogen adaptation on population complexity and diversity are discussed. |
Effects of heavy metal concentrations on biological activity of soil micro-organismsM. Šmejkalová, O. Mikanová, L. BorůvkaPlant Soil Environ., 2003, 49(7):321-326 | DOI: 10.17221/4131-PSE The distribution of cadmium, lead and zinc in exchangeable, organic, and 2M HNO3-extractable fractions as well as the effect of heavy metal concentrations on soil microflora was investigated. Six sampling transects were chosen in theLitavkaRiveralluvium in 1999-2001. Concentrations of all metals increased with decreasing distance from the source of contamination. The concentrations of Cd and Zn in exchangeable fraction were higher than in organically bound fraction, a reverse trend was found in Pb speciation. All measured parameters of soil microbial activity were affected by heavy metal concentrations. The decrease in CFU was most significant in the case of oligotrophic bacteria and spore-forming bacteria. Significant inhibition of C-biomass occurred in soils highly contaminated by heavy metals. The Cbiomass:Cox ratio decreased with increasing soil pollution. Generally, the values of enzymatic activities were highest in the soil above the source of contamination and they were decreased as approaching the source of contamination. Our results demonstrate that several parameters of microbial activity could be used as good indicators of increasing concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn in soil. |
Phosphorus availability in hydromorphic soils of Eastern CroatiaD. Petosić, V. Kovacević, M. JosipovićPlant Soil Environ., 2003, 49(9):394-401 | DOI: 10.17221/4143-PSE The phosphorus (P) availability was tested on hydromorphic soils located in theSavavalley. 480 soil profiles covering the area of31 227 hawas analysed in our study. The plant available P was determined by the Ammonium-Lactate method. The P availability in the surface layer (0-30 cm) is very low (up to 5 mg P2O5/100 g of soil) in about 30% of the tested agricultural land (9 440 ha), next 32% (9 897 ha) is in the range of a low P availability (from 5.1 to 10 mg), while only 17% (5 445 ha) has a good or very good P availability (above 20 mg). Especially high frequency of low P availability was found in vertic gley, amphygley and hypogley soils (total8 680 haor 28% of tested agricultural land). |

RastijaPlant Soil Environ., 2003, 49(11):505-510 | DOI: 10.17221/4185-PSE Three maize inbred lines (Os86-39, Os89-35 and Os87-24) were grown in pots with Eutric Cambisol using 9 fertilisation variants (control 10 kg/ha Zn - on soil surface; 5 kg/ha - foliar application; 61 kg/ha P; 61 kg/ha P and 10 kg/ha Zn - on soil surface; 61 kg/ha P and 5 kg/ha Zn - foliar application; 183 kg/ha P; 183 kg/ha P and 10 kg/ha Zn - on soil surface; 183 kg/ha P and 5 kg/ha Zn - foliar application). The effects of phosphorus and zinc fertilisation on the dry matter yield, plant height, stalk diameter as well as phosphorus and zinc concentrations in ear-leaves were investigated. Significant differences were found between the lines in all parameters investigated except for phosphorus concentration. Line Os87-24 was characterised by the best results in the total biomass production. Zinc fertilisation decreased while phosphorus fertilisation increased total plant dry matter mass. Phosphorus fertilisation increased its concentration in the ear-leaves. Zinc fertilisation, especially foliar, resulted in Zn concentration increase in the ear-leaf of the lines investigated. |
Potassium dynamics in the soil and yield formation in a long-term field experimentH.W. Scherer, H.E. Goldbach, J. ClemensPlant Soil Environ., 2003, 49(12):531-535 | DOI: 10.17221/4189-PSE The influence of an interrupted K fertilisation on different K fractions of the soil, yield formation and K uptake by different crops was investigated in a long-term field experiment on Luvisol derived from loess. Irrespective of the previous K fertilisation, the interruption of K fertilisation resulted in a sharp decline of CAL extractable K. K concentration in the saturation extract as well as HCl extractable K were reduced while K fixation capacity increased within 10 years after omitting K. Omitting K fertilisation decreased yields of sugar beet and potatoes while cereals were not affected, although K uptake of all crops reacted to the differentiated K supply to a different extent. |
Effects of zeolite amendment on microbial biomass and respiratory activity in heavy metal contaminated soilsG. Mühlbachová, T. ŠimonPlant Soil Environ., 2003, 49(12):536-541 | DOI: 10.17221/4190-PSE A laboratory incubation experiment with zeolite and glucose was performed to evaluate the effects of zeolite amendment in heavy metal contaminated soils from two smelter areas on some microbial characteristics [Kremikovtzi (K1, K2) in Bulgariaand Příbram (P1, P2) in the CzechRepublic]. The content of microbial biomass showed a tendency to decrease in Kremikovtzi soils whereas in Příbram soils no significant effects were found after zeolite amendment. Respiratory activity and metabolic quotient (qCO2) decreased on the second and third day in Kremikovtzi soils amended with zeolite, no effects were observed in Příbram soils. Heavy metals decreased the content of microbial biomass in Kremikovtzi soils whereas the contaminated soil from Příbram area had the highest microbial biomass compared to non-contaminated soil during incubation, probably due to lower mineralization of carbon. The respiratory activity did not show any significant effects of zeolites on the evolution of CO2 and qCO2 in heavy metal contaminated Příbram soil. The respiratory activity in non-contaminated Příbram soil remained during the experiment lower in comparison to contaminated one, however the addition of zeolite increased qCO2. |
Cadmium and zinc phytoextraction potential of seven clones of Salix spp. planted on heavy metal contaminated soilsM. Vysloužilová, P. Tlustoš, J. SzákováPlant Soil Environ., 2003, 49(12):542-547 | DOI: 10.17221/4191-PSE The Cd and Zn accumulation and phytoextraction potential of seven willow clones was investigated in a pot experiment for two vegetation periods. Heavily polluted Fluvisol-Litavka, moderately contaminated Cambisol-Pribram, and unpolluted control Chernozem-Suchdol were used. Significant differences were found in Cd and Zn accumulation between the willow clones. Cd and Zn were transferred from roots to aboveground tissues and all tested clones confirmed higher Cd and Zn accumulation in leaves than in twigs. Cd and Zn amounts removed by willow leaves were the highest from the most polluted soil (up to 83% Cd and 71% Zn of total removal). Therefore the harvest of leaves is necessary if willows are planted for heavy metal phytoextraction. Although the extremely high Zn contamination of Fluvisol-Litavka significantly reduced biomass production, willows planted in this soil showed the highest Zn removal because of extremely high Zn accumulation (max. 5061 ppm in leaves). Clones planted in moderately contaminated soil achieved the highest Cd removal. Clones showed different abilities to remove Cd and Zn, which was dependent on soil type and contamination level. Remediation factors were determined less than 1% for Zn in the heavily polluted soil and also unsatisfactory for Cd. However, it was shown that willows were suitable phytoextractors of moderately contaminated soil. About 20% of Cd and 4% of Zn were removed by harvested biomass from the total content of soil after two vegetation periods. |
Incidence of bovine tuberculosis in wild and domestic animals other than cattle in six Central European countries during 1990-1999I. Pavlik, M. Machackova, W. Yayo Ayele, J. Lamka, I. Parmova, I. LipiecVet Med - Czech, 2002, 47(5):122-131 | DOI: 10.17221/5815-VETMED The study was undertaken in Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia laying between Baltic and Adriatic seas on 610 402 km2. Mycobacterium bovis infection was diagnosed in 70 animals belonging to 17 species other than cattle. The set of wild animals comprised 12 European bison (Bison bonasus), one red deer (Cervus elaphus), five wild boars (Sus scrofa), and one European wild goat (Capra aegagrus) bred in a game park. Further positive animals included two farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) and one bactrian camel (Camelus ferus) owned by a circus. The infection was also demonstrated in 18 domestic animals belonging to 3 species living on farms where bovine tuberculosis was diagnosed in cattle. This set included 12 domestic pigs (Sus scrofa f. domestica), two domestic sheep (Ovis ammon f. aries), and four dogs (Canis lupus f. familiaris). The set of animals bred in zoological gardens consisted of 30 animals belonging to 9 species as follows: three bison (Bison bison), four tapirs (Tapirus terrestris), one cassowary (Casuarius casuarius - isolate identified by the biological assay in guinea pigs only), eight sitatungas (Tragelaphus spekei), three elands (Taurotragus oryx), one gnu (Connochaetes taurinus), eight reticulated giraffes (Giraffa cameloparadlis reticulata), one puma (Puma concolor), and one Vietnamese pot-bellied pig (Sus bucculentus). Although, considering the population sizes, absolute numbers of the infected individuals are rather low, wild animals or such animals bred in captivity should be regarded as possible reservoirs of the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis. Tests for bovine tuberculosis are therefore necessary before transportation of all wild animals. Any lesion arousing suspicion of tuberculosis found on necropsy of wild animals must be laboratory examined for the presence of mycobacteria. |
Resveratrol - occurrence in wine originating from Czech vineyard regions and effect on human healthOriginal PaperK. Melzoch, V. Filip, D. Buckiová, I. Hanzlíková, J. ŠmidrkalCzech J. Food Sci., 2000, 18(1):35-40 Resveratrol is a substance of a natural character, naturally present in some foods, namely in wine. The grape peels of Vitis vinifera contain about 50 to 100 mg of resveratrol/g and the average resveratrol concentration in red wines produced in the world fluctuates between 1.0 to 3.0 mg/l. A few biological activities were discovered with resveratrol in the last few years such as positive action against some cardiovascular diseases described as so called French paradox and anti-cancer chemo-preventive activity. The denominators of those activities are anti-oxidizing and free radical scavenging features of resveratrol molecule. As expected, red wines from vines originating in the Czech vineyard regions appear to contain relatively high levels of resveratrol (from 1.4 to 9.4 mg/l. |
Effect of the year and storage on ascorbic acid content and total polyphenol content in three apple varietiesShort CommunicationJ. Lachman, M. Orsák, V. Pivec, J. KučeraCzech J. Food Sci., 2000, 18(2):71-74 | DOI: 10.17221/8313-CJFS Ascorbic acid (AA) and total polyphenol content (TP) are important plant antioxidants with many healthy effects, such as "scavengers of free radicals", they inhibit oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, lower cholesterol levels, decrease fragility of blood vessels and increase their permeability, decrease heart coronary risk, etc. One of important sources of these compounds in human nutrition are apples. In two years (1997 and 1998) was investigated ascorbic acid content (AA) and total polyphenol content (TP) in three apple varieties (Idared, Gloster and Ontario) cultivated under equal conditions on the experimental plot of Czech University of Agriculture in Prague-Suchdol. AA content was determined by titration method with 2,6-dichlorphenolindophenol and TP content spectrophotometrically with Folin-Ciocalteau's reagent. In two years' trials AA and TP contents were estimated immediately after harvest in September and then monthly during storage for six months at +5°C. Statistically high significant differences were determined both in AA and TP contents during storage period - there was observed meaningful AA and TP decrease. The highest antioxidant content showed in both years early variety Ontario (in average 12.05 mg/kg AA, 2011.5 mg/kg TP), the lowest semi-early variety Gloster (in average 5.45 mg/kg AA, 1738.0 mg/kg TP). In this context the variety Ontario is the most favourable. The highest decrease of AA content was in variety Ontario (-30.05 %rel), the lowest in variety Gloster (-22.93 %rel ); in TP contents were differences negligible (-27.14 and -27.82 %rel). In spite of this decrease were in Ontario variety both values after six months storage the most favourable (8.45 mg/kg AA, 1466.5 mg/kg TP). Results were statistically evaluated with F-test and t-test. There could be seen differences among varieties and years of cultivation, but these differences were under the level of statistical significance showing only apparent tendencies. While varietal differences in decreasing of AA content during storage were greater (in interval from -22.93 %rel in Gloster variety to -30.05 %rel in Ontario variety), decreasing of TP contents during storage was nearly the same (about -27 %rel of original content |
Proof of authenticity of pure instant coffeeOriginal PaperI. Bohačenko, Z. VeselýCzech J. Food Sci., 2000, 18(5):165-169 | DOI: 10.17221/8337-CJFS An HPLC method with refractometric detection was worked out for the determination of the limiting contents of marker saccharides (free mannitol and total glucose and xylose) used for the proof of authenticity of pure instant coffee. This method, even though more laborious, yields results comparable with those obtained by the HPAE-PAD method and is intended mainly for those laboratories where the current HPLC technique with refractometric detection is presently used for saccharide analysis. The survey of market supply showed that instant coffee imported in bulk and subsequently packaged in the Czech Republic is most frequently adulterated - only one out of 7 samples examined contained authentic coffee. On the other hand, only one out of 10 samples of instant coffee imported in original packaging did not meet the authenticity criteria. The samples of instant coffee by domestic producers indicated that one producer placed on the market an adulterated product, whereas the other brand is authentic coffee. |
Outbreak of mirid bugs (Heteroptera: Miridae) on hopsOriginal PaperJosef Šedivý, Vladimír ŘehákPlant Protect. Sci., 2000, 36(4):150-155 | DOI: 10.17221/9647-PPS Outbreaks of mirid-bugs on hop in Czech hop region recurred in 1875, I 928/29, 1947/48 and 1998/99. The spectrum and importance of specific harmful mirid species varied with the type of hop-garden. Calocoris fulvomaculatus was a dominant species in pole hop-gardens. Lygus rugulipennis was a dominant pest in trellises in 1998/99, when it locally damaged more than 50% of bines. Mirid-bugs migrate to hops at temperatures over l0°C, and stay there over the growing season. Bine tops are damaged by sucking, drying back later. Bines that grow from under the sites of injury are distorted and cease twining. This damage is caused before and after the training, up to 2.5 m of the bines height. An economic threshold is at I0% of damaged bine tops and more in the period after training. Years with warm, dry autumn, mild winter and warm, dry spring provide favourable conditions for outbreaks of the mirid-bugs and their spring activities. |

The information was obtained in the frame of Project PHARE-ACE P97-8098-R "Institutional Economics in the Agri-Food Business: How can Structural Policy Help to Integrate EU?" The research was performed in year 2000 by means of a questionnaire method and a method of interviews with managers of individual entities in the food chain of pig meat sector. Problems of the execution of property rights in supplier-customer relations in the Czech pig meat sector are the following (institutional view): poor enforceability of property rights, sale for cash, refraining from long-term contracts, decrease of trust between business partners and trust in legal institutions, increase of transaction costs, lack of business ethics etc. |

Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(1):36-48 | DOI: 10.17221/5286-AGRICECON Decreasing numbers of tourists to the Czech Republic point at a weakening competitive position of Czech destinations during the most recent years. For many communities, tourism may be a short-lived economic dream when understanding of tourists´ perceptions and travel motives is lacking. The two objectives pursued in this study are 1) an identification of the positions of competing destinations and 2) an a-posteriori segmentation with psychographic variables. Market segmentation becomes the crucial factor in the strategic design process of target marketing. Like many other markets, tourism markets do not respond homogeneously to marketing activities. Subdividing visitors into useful groups may provide a basis for competitive advantage. Our study establishes taxonomy of visitors to Southern Moravia. The study tries to overcome well-known insufficiencies of single segmentation approaches by exploiting the advantage of the multivariate nature of combined push factors, pull factors, and other factors of more restrictive nature (i.e. time and money). The segmentation task employs multivariate data analysis techniques such as factor analysis, cluster analysis and multi-dimensional scaling. Recent research on the European Vacation Style Typology is incorporated. |
Globalisation and concentration in the Czech agro-food sectorT. DouchaAgric. Utilising information from foreign sources and developed countries, the paper tries to present a complex view on the Czech situation from the structural and institutional aspects. Based on limited Czech information sources, the market structure in the individual links of the food chains is presented, together with the hypothesis about the sequence of the market power in the present Czech agro-food sector: input suppliers and retailers - farmers - processors. The paper also implies possibilities of the state to suppress negative effects of globalisation and concentration, especially as regards the adjustment of the Czech market regulations to the EU ones. |
Globalisation and regionalisationV. JeníčekAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(2):87-92 | DOI: 10.17221/5293-AGRICECON What regards the vision of the future relationship of the global and regional liberalisation, two variants are offered. According to the first, multilateralism will go on perpetually around the present trajectory and gradually will, supported by the processes of internationalisation and interdependence, accelerated by the condensing net of trans-national corporations and their activities, suppress regionalism. According to the second, regionalism will, closely connected to multilateralism, spread territorially into the shape of several macro-regions as a transitive stage to the unified liberalised world economy. In both cases, it regards of course the visions of a system and not matter-of-fact type. In the frame of each region, there will further exist different comparative advantages, which will influence the volumes and structure of production and trade, as well as certain specific fields of economic policy. However, that changes nothing of the fact, that namely multilateralism contributes to a considerable extent to reaching a higher equilibrium, adaptability and coherence of the world economy as a whole, even if reaching of this state is connected with considerable, mostly, however, short-time, costs. The contribution content is the characteristics and comparison of the regional policy level in the European Union and the CzechRepublic. In the European Union, this policy has developed for a long time and it has been modified to the form which it has at the beginning of the 21st century. In this, it is a continuous process. On the contrary, in the Czech Republic during directive management, regional policy was not formulated and most of decisive processes were centralised. Since the beginning of 90ies, significant changes have taken place and in 2000 it was possible to say that the necessary presumptions for the use of efficient regional policy principles had been created. |
Czech consumers´ evaluation of choosen meat productsM. Pourová, V. StehlíkAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(3):121-125 | DOI: 10.17221/5459-AGRICECON The article summarises the main results of the analysis of the perception of selected meat products in theCzechRepublic (i.e. the following types of salami: Gothai, Famer´s, Tourist, Poličan, chicken ham salami, Hunter´s, pork ham salami and turkey roll). Two factors have been defined on the basis of a composition approach, which influence the evaluation of meat products by Czech consumers during their purchase. The first factor was the perceived quality of the product and the second one was the healthiness factor. It has been found out that the perceived quality of the product has a decisive influence on forming of the preferences of Czech consumers in all analysed meat products. This finding has resulted from both direct and indirect acquisition of preference data. The healthiness factor is also important even though it has a relatively higher importance mainly in the meat products made from poultry and lean parts of other slaughter animals. Further, the analysis has confirmed the hypotheses of the influence of the consumers´ perception on forming their preferences. |
Has the regulation of old debts in the successor companies proven worthwhile?P. Hagelschuer, A. HägerAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(4):161-165 | DOI: 10.17221/5297-AGRICECON The old debt problem resulting from the transformation of the agricultural co-operatives of the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) is described with respect to its evolution and its economic policy treatment during the process of transformation. So far, the measures for the treatment of old debts have had business economically stabilising effects. Nevertheless, debts are still growing. The farms which are affected by such old debts are strongly interested in solving this problem. This explains the intensity of the results' discussion of a scientific expert opinion on an analysis of the mode of action of the old debt regulation in agriculture. The conclusions which can be drawn from the public discussion of these results with respect to the future treatment of these old debts show, that the affected farms favour a kind of bonus rule for debt repayment. Such a regulation also seems to be acceptable for the treasury as the final bearer of the remaining debts and as a solution to minimise the taxpayers' burden. |
Agricultural co-operatives: perspectives for the 21st CenturyB. BoučkováAgric. However, they have diversified during the last decades and developed from the "classical" co-operative of the Rochdale type into several forms, which do not always fully observe all the recognised co-operative principles. These are namely the share co-operatives, daughter co-operatives, "New Generation Co-operatives" and limited liability co-operatives. Among the individual EU countries, there are also considerable differences with regard to the co-operative legal frame. For the future, co-operatives can play important role both in the economic field and in the social field. |

Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(5):197-210 | DOI: 10.17221/5303-AGRICECON The paper is based on a special sampling survey of farms that was conducted under EU PHARE ACE research project P97-8158-R "Micro-economic Analysis of Farm Restructuring in Central and Eastern Europe" in 2000 in one of the NUTS 2 regions of the CR - in the South-East region. The region involves two administrative regions - Vysočina and South Moravian NUTS 3 and consists of subregions with different natural and market conditions (of hilly, lowland and suburban type) representing the conditions of agricultural production in the Czech Republic as a whole. The main results of the survey focused on farms of three different categories are presented: farms as legal entities (separately agricultural production cooperatives, joint stock companies and limited liability companies), officially registered individual farms of different size (formally licensed to business activities) and unregistered individual farms including small farming units - households with self-sustaining agricultural production. |

The slow and inexperienced legal system makes third party contract enforcement non-viable. Market enforcement of contract is imperfect due to incompleteness of contracts and underdevelopment of informal features (institutions) of the society, such as codes of behaviour, low importance of goodwill, low adherence to ethical norms, inexperience with conflicts solving in market economy. The survey data related to contracting in transitional agriculture are presented. |

The aim is to analyse the wants and the needs and the current situation of farming entities represented through the sample of 412 farmers spread in two production areas in South and Northwest Slovakia. In the questionnaires, farmers were asked not only about the objectives but as well about their subjective feelings of their current situation in terms of economy, their life standard and their planes to the future. |

Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(6):245-250 | DOI: 10.17221/5312-AGRICECON Recent literature and research on social capital has demonstrated the economic importance of social features, such as trust and norms that facilitate cooperation. This article focuses on the role of social capital in the context of the Czech agricultural sector. Obtaining credit, sharing machinery, and proliferating information serves as examples where an awareness and reliance on the social capital of rural communities matter. By forming groups and strengthening existing networks, Czech farmers can improve their productivity, as well as their welfare. The article concludes by warning that the Czech state cannot invest directly in social capital, but should create the necessary legal and economic incentives to encourage the formation of social capital. |

The entrepreneurs started to build their activities on the base of market economy principles. The farmers started founding of specialized or universal-trading organizations aimed to sale of the agricultural production. The legal forms of the companies were cooperatives or companies incorporated. In practice, the subjects proved the reasonability of their existence not only on the side of agricultural production sale, but also on the side of purchasing inputs necessary for the agricultural production process. One of the best trading organizations is Agropork-družstvo in Brno, which is specialized in purchasing and sale of pigs, cows and recently poultry as well. |
Environmental analysis in the winegrowing industryP. TomšíkAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(7):298-302 | DOI: 10.17221/5324-AGRICECON Environmental analysis in the winegrowing industry is necessary for strategic management of businesses in this industry. The paper is focused on PEST analysis and pays attention to individual factors. It emphasizes the necessity of adjustment of the Czech legislation to the EU conditions, fulfilment of its conditions, e.g. compulsory registration of vineyards. In the field of economics, it is necessary to pay attention to renovation of vineyards with the help of subsidies from the state budget because the industry contributes to keeping the cultural level of the region and the human resources on the territory. It can be also a source of the environmental pollution. The technology of vine processing follows the changes in viniculture, changes of growing-technology and of the structure of white and red varieties. In conditions of the Czech Republic, it means to gradually transfer to production of quality varieties of vines by gradual renovation, which has to be a priority. The winegrowing sector is the industry with the highest value added also in the Czech Republic, and its share in the total agricultural production in a region can reach a significant level. |

Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(7):311-314 | DOI: 10.17221/5326-AGRICECON The paper is a part of solution of a post-doctorate grant awarded by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GAČR No. 402/02/P059) connected with the research plan of the FBE MUAF in Brno (GAMSM 431100007), and it focuses on environmental analysis of the brewing industry in the Czech Republic with a focus on the key driving forces in this industry. The basic types of analysed driving forces are the following: long-term growth rate of the industry, character of customers and how they use the product, product innovation, process innovation, marketing innovation, entry/exit of major firms, diffusion of proprietary knowledge, changes in cost and efficiency, buyer preferences for a differentiated product, regulatory influences and government policy changes, changing societal priorities and lifestyles, uncertainty and business risk, and globalisation. Factors identified in the above-mentioned areas are examined also owing to their period of influence, and the possible implications on actions and strategies of breweries are discussed. |
Factors influencing intensity of competition in the Czech dairy industryR. ČerníkováAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2002, 48(7):315-320 | DOI: 10.17221/5327-AGRICECON The paper is a part of solution of the research plan of the FBE MUAF in Brno, No. GAMSM 431100007, and it is focused on analysis of factors influencing intensity of competition fight among the existing firms in the Czech dairy industry - describing their actual situation and their possible development in the future relating to the expected integration of the Czech Republic into the European Union. All analysed factors are important and significantly intensify competition fight among the existing firms in the industry. The level of concentration is low - 16% of businesses in the industry control 60% of market, but almost 30% of businesses in the industry have only 3% share in the market, growth of the industry is slow - about 5% annually, and barriers of exit from the industry are significant. Situation of the next four factors (level of fixed and storage costs, product differentiation and switching costs, size of capacity augmentation, diversity of competitors) is similar. |
