Internal environment of an agricultural farmD. KudováAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2008, 54(1):26-31 | DOI: 10.17221/253-AGRICECON Zemspol, Dešná, Ltd is a large corporation engaged in various aspects of agriculture in the Czech Republic, including agricultural production, the assembly, maintenance and repair of agricultural machinery, the production of feed stuffs and feed mixtures,special agricultural services demanding special entitlement, business related matters and accounting. This paper focuses on agricultural production. The farm manages 2 100 hectares of agricultural land suitable for growing potatoes, although the largest area is used for growing wheat. The range of produce remains constant. Regarding livestock, the corporation specializes in cattle with the steady head count 250 for the past 15 years. These are predominantly red and white cattle, optimized for both milk and meat production. The average annual production is 1 350 000 litres of milk and 250 tons of beef. The agricultural farm can be described as being a strong perfomer with a very stable base, good reputation and very attractive products, both of crops and livestock. In order to keep this enviable status, frequent internal and external environmental analyses are undertaken. |
Integration and independence in the perspective of rural municipalitiesH. Hudečková, M. PitterlingAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2009, 55(12):596-604 | DOI: 10.17221/98/2009-AGRICECON In order to develop the quality of life in small rural municipalities, their representation faces the thoughts about the perspective of these municipalities in economic terms (the capacity to finance long-term investments) as well as in the socio-cultural terms (the development of participation in public life embedded in the local identity). This article presents the results of the pilot empirical survey in one micro-region of the Czech Republic. The results of the in-depth interviews clearly indicate the preference of the investigated communities to choose the strategy of supporting their independence (which might result in the risk of lower ability to deal with economic problems) prior to the strategy to strengthen the economy of the community through merging the municipalities (and to risk the potential loss of local identity). The conclusions consider the possible forms of municipal cooperation reinforcing the capacity to address economic problems while preserving the autonomy of small rural municipalities. However, the low ability of the partnership cooperation of these municipalities is demonstrated. |
Effect of the mycoflora of ergot (Claviceps purpurea)sclerotia on their viabilityMichal ONDŘEJ, Bohumír CAGAŠ, Eliška ONDRÁČKOVÁPlant Protect. Sci., 2010, 46(2):66-71 | DOI: 10.17221/48/2009-PPS Twenty fungal species were isolated from sclerotia of ergot (Claviceps purpurea) originating from rye. In in vitro tests with the anamorphic stage of ergot (known as Sphacelia segetum) high mycoparasitic activity was exhibited only by two of them - Clonostachys rosea and Trichoderma harzianum, moderate mycoparasitic activity was detected in Ulocladium sp., Clonostachys catenulata, Trichoderma hamatum, and Trichothecium roseum. In in vitro tests of mycoparasitic activity with sclerotia of the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum their rapid and total destruction was brought about only by the fungi Clonostachys rosea and Trichoderma harzianum. The viability of overwintering ergot sclerotia in the soil was influenced by their placement, age, depth of placement and treatment with a conidial suspension of the fungus Clonostachys rosea. The highest viability values were reported in fresh one-year-old sclerotia. In two-year-old sclerotia their viability was reduced and their sensitivity to microbial activity was higher. The sclerotia aged 3 years or more did not germinate and were all microbiologically degraded in the soil. More than 80% of degradation of sclerotia which were 1 to 2 years old was caused by the fungus Clonostachys rosea. The degradation of sclerotia aged 3 to 4 years was brought about by bacteria, soil edafauna (mites, nematodes) and fungi of the genera Trichoderma, Fusarium, Clonostachys, etc. |
Reliability of PCR based screening for identification and quantification of GMOsJaroslava Ovesná, Ladislav Kučera, Jan Hodek, Kateřina DemnerováCzech J. Food Sci., 2010, 28(2):133-138 | DOI: 10.17221/67/2009-CJFS Handling with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is regulated namely in EC. Laboratories often use polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based screening methods to monitor the presence of GM particles in food commodities as a cost effective approach. The reliability was tested of such screening using 35S CaMV promoter as the target sequences. Soya grown from non-GM cultivar as declared by a seed company was investigated after the harvest, transport to the silo, and before processing. The results based on PCR and real-time PCR analysis clearly showed that, the contamination with debris of other species, dust during transport, storage, and other kind of handling led to contamination with detectable amounts of Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV). Impurities are allowed by EC regulations but may, as we have shown, interfere with the analytical procedures based on PCR. The identification of 35S CaMV promoter and NOS terminator in food with uncertain history and no approved specific events may indicate unknown GMOs and perhaps emergency situation. |
Impact of long term fertilization on soil water content in HaploborollsC.Y. Song, X.Y. Zhang, X.B. Liu, Y.Y. Sui, Z.L. LiPlant Soil Environ., 2010, 56(9):408-411 | DOI: 10.17221/173/2009-PSE Soil water content under no fertilizer (NF), fertilizer (F) (N:30; P2O5: 45 kg/ha), and fertilizer plus pig manure (FO) (N:30; P2O5: 45 kg/ha; pig manure 15 000 kg/ha in 2003; and 30 000 kg/ha in 2004 and 2005) treatments was measured using neutron probe instrument for a period three years in a long term field experiment in order to investigate the impact of different fertilization treatments on Haploborolls soil water content. Fertilization had significant effects on the soil water content. FO treatment had greater soil water content in 10 cm depth than F treatment with average 9.9% increase (P < 0.05) but lower than NF treatment; however, in the depth from 30 to 90 cm, there was no water content difference between F and FO treatments. Treatment with organic amendments reduced total soil water content on the long term experiment basis. Across the three years, no fertilizer treatment had total soil water content higher by 1.2% and 3.1% than fertilizer treatment and fertilizer plus pig manure treatment within 10 to 210 cm soil profile in most of the months, respectively. |
How can wheat landraces contribute to present breeding?L. Dotlačil, J. Hermuth, Z. Stehno, V. Dvořáček, J. Bradová, L. LeišováCzech J. Genet. Plant Breed., 2010, 46(10):S70-S74 | DOI: 10.17221/1519-CJGPB Two sets of winter wheat landraces and obsolete cultivars were studied in three-year field experiments, and compared with 3 modern control cultivars. The higher spike productivity in modern cultivars could mainly be attributed to an increased number of grains in a spikelet and harvest index (HI), whereas thousand grain weight (TGW) has only a slight effect. Landraces and old cultivars proved to have a higher content of crude protein. Spike productivity characteristics, except for TGW, showed a negative correlation with the crude protein content in the grain. The number of kernels in a spikelet strongly affected the spike's productivity, whereas the TGW has only half the effect. The mean yield of four modern cultivars was 51% higher than the mean yield of 31 landraces and obsolete cultivars. Regression analysis proved the much stronger response of modern cultivars to environment (b = 1.63), then was the response of old cultivars (b = 0.87). Different responses to environments were found within the set of 31 landraces, as well. We could also identify potentially valuable donors of earliness and winter hardiness among the old cultivars. High crude protein content (up to 18%), and other valuable quality characteristics, were rather frequent. In both sets, HMW Glu-subunits were described, and we have additionally studied 67 selected lines. Among them, 10 lines showed the crude protein content of 17.5% to 18.3% (where the gluten index and Zeleny test varied from 28.5 to 54.0 and 36.8 to 61.7, respectively). High values of all quality characteristics showed lines gained from the cultivars Mindeszentpusztai (HUN), Szekacz 19 (HUN), Bartweizen linie a (AUT), Viglašská červenoklasá (CZE), as well as some others. |
The spinal nerves that constitute the plexus lumbosacrales of the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)A. AydinVet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(4):183-186 | DOI: 10.17221/3021-VETMED This study was aimed at investigating the lumbosacral plexus of squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris). Ten squirrels were used in this work. The animals were carefully dissected and the spinal nerves that constitute the lumbosacral plexus were examined. It was discovered that the lumbosacral plexus was formed by L6, L7, S1, S2 in nine animals and in the one remaining animal in addition to these branches rami ventralis of L4 and L5 were forming the plexus. The common root forming the last part of the lumbosacral plexus and giving branches dispersing to the hind limb was formed by the rami ventralis of L6, L7, S1, S2. Thus, in squirrels, the spinal nerves forming the lumbosacral plexus and the joining of these spinal nerves to each other differs from other rodents and mammals. |
The extent of root rot damage in Norway spruce stands established on fertile sites of former agricultural landR. MarešJ. For. Sci., 2010, 56(1):1-6 | DOI: 10.17221/36/2009-JFS The aim of this study was to compare the degree of root rot damage in two large complexes of Norway spruce stands established on former agricultural land at fertile sites. The root rot infection was observed on the stump cutting area on both intended and salvage clear fellings. Stands in Kružberk area in the Nízký Jeseník Mts. established on arable land showed very poor stability and large root rot damage at the age of 40-50 years. In contrast, stands in Lužná area in the Javorníky Mts., founded on former sheep pastures, were markedly much less damaged at the age of 90-110 years and proved to be able to provide quality timber, although they were damaged by the root rot as well. |
A trend of proliferation of proleptic shoots in partial populations of Scots pineJ. Nárovcová, V. NárovecJ. For. Sci., 2010, 56(12):571-579 | DOI: 10.17221/79/2009-JFS The incidence of the summer (late-seasonal) growth of shoots was monitored following the planting of Scots pine from different provenances of the Czech Republic and different planting regimes in an experimental plot in Týniště nad Orlicí. In the third year after reforestation the local populations had the highest proportion of summer growth of the shoots (18%) compared to other populations. From the second to the fourth year after planting the percentage proportion of summer shoots was determined for the species Scots pine in conditions of the Polabí region, it was 13.5% of the individuals in each year. The analysis of stem sections demonstrated double rings as a result of the cambium activation through the growth of summer shoots. |

BalíkPlant Soil Environ., 2010, 56(7):305-311 | DOI: 10.17221/47/2010-PSE Mixture of plants (Festulolium: Trifolium pretense L.) was grown in the pot experiment with different forms of nitrogen nutrition. The fertilizers (ammonium sulphate or calcium nitrate or ammonium nitrate) were applied conventionally or according to the CULTAN method (Controlled Uptake Long Term Ammonium Nutrition). The absolute growth rate (AGR) and contents of free asparagine and proline in the aboveground biomass were determined. Additional nitrogen increased the dry weight of biomass and AGR of the plants treated with sidedress application in comparison with plants treated with the CULTAN method. The results suggest increased levels of free proline in CULTAN-treated plants while those of asparagine did not increase. The significance of these observations to the loss of potential yield and the relationship between methods of application is considered. |

PavlikVet Med - Czech, 2008, 53(6):283-306 | DOI: 10.17221/1859-VETMED Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is the etiologic agent of paratuberculosis, a disease with considerable economic impact, principally on dairy cattle herds. Animals with paratuberculosis shed viable MAP especially in their milk, faeces and semen. MAP may have a role in the development of Crohn's disease in humans via the consumption of contaminated milk and milk products. The current methods of milk pasteurization are not sufficient to kill all MAP cells present in milk and MAP has been cultured from raw or pasteurized milk and isolated from cheese. The purpose of the present study was to review the different methods used for detection of MAP in milk and milk products. We analyze the current methods for direct or non direct identification of MAP and culture and molecular biology methods that can be applied to milk and milk products. |
Course and branch of the celiac artery in the red falcon (Buteo rufinus)A. Haligur, A. DuzlerVet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(2):79-86 | DOI: 10.17221/144/2009-VETMED The present study was aimed at determining the origin, course and distribution of the celiac artery in eight adult red falcons, using a latex injection and dissection method. The celiac artery was ascertained to originate from the aorta at the level of the last 2-3 costae. The celiac artery was determined to split into two main branches, namely, left branch of the celiac artery and right branch of the celiac artery, in between the proventriculus and gizzard, and in the proximity of the lien. Prior to the indicated bifurcation, the celiac artery was observed to give off an esophageal artery and superior proventricular artery. In seven of the red falcons examined, splenic arteries, varying from two to four in number, were determined to spring from the celiac artery. Both the left and right hepatic arteries were ascertained to stem from the left branch of the celiac artery. The terminal branch of the left branch of the celiac artery, namely, the left gastric artery, was determined to have a fan-like distribution to the left surface of the gaster. The artery of the gall bladder was demonstrated to emanate from the left branch of the celiac artery in all of the red falcons examined, excluding one. The right branch of the celiac artery was determined to ramify into its terminal branches, namely, the right inferior gastric artery, ileocecal artery, pancreaticoduodenal artery, duodenojejunal artery and gastroduodenal artery, in the proximity of the pylorus which constitutes the gastro-duodenal passage. |
Effect of seven-day administration of carprofen or meloxicam on renal function in clinically healthy miniature pigsP. Rauser, L. Stehlik, P. Proks, R. Srnec, A. NecasVet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(9):438-444 | DOI: 10.17221/2980-VETMED Carprofen or meloxicam are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which may elicit a variety of renal disturbances. Prior to this study, the effects of carprofen or meloxicam on renal function in pigs were unknown. A total of 21 clinically healthy Goettingen miniature pigs (36.9 ± 7.22 kg) were divided into three groups based on what they were administered - carprofen, meloxicam or saline. First, blood was collected from the jugular vein and urine by ultrasound-guided cystocentesis. Serum urea (U) and creatinine (CR), fractional clearance of sodium (FCNa), urine gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities, urine protein/creatinine ratio (UP/UC), urine gamma-glutamyltransferase/creatinine ratio (GGT/CR) and urine alkaline phosphatase/creatinine ratio (ALP/CR) and urine analysis - urine specific gravity (USG) and sediment microscopy were assessed before and seven days after daily intramuscular administration (IM) of saline (1.5 ml per animal), carprofen (2 mg/kg) or meloxicam (0.1 mg/kg). All animals had identical housing, feeding and unlimited water intake and had not undergone surgery or been administered any medication for three months prior to this. All pigs served as control groups for an experimental study of fracture healing using transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and scaffolds. The data were analyzed using a one way ANOVA and a Mann-Whitney test (P < 0.05). In pigs receiving carprofen, serum urea and creatinine were significantly decreased, compared to the control (P < 0.01) or meloxicam (P < 0.05) groups. In animals receiving meloxicam FCNa was significantly increased (P < 0.05) and urine specific gravity significantly decrease (P < 0.05) compared to the pretreatment values. Two carprofen-treated pigs had a slight increase in renal tubular epithelial cells upon urine sediment examination. Intramuscular administration of carprofen or meloxicam in healthy miniature pigs for seven days causes no clinically important changes in selected renal parameters (without azotemia). However these changes indicate mild damage of renal tubules. Despite these findings, meloxicam or carprofen are recommended for analgesia in healthy pigs. |
Soil characteristics under selected broadleaved tree species in East NorwayK. Rejšek, O. Haveraaen, A. Sandnes, K. SomerlíkováJ. For. Sci., 2010, 56(7):295-306 | DOI: 10.17221/86/2009-JFS Comprehensive analyses of soil properties of sites of native Scandinavian broadleaved tree species were performed in 36 habitats in East Norway. The material consisted of stands of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.), white birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.), black alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.), speckled alder (Alnus incana Moench.), European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) and sessile oak (Quercus petraea [Matt.] Liebl.). The main objective was to describe the vertical characteristics and variations in some selected soil variables of the soil profiles. Particular soil horizons of 15 Brunisolic soils, 11 Regosolic soils, 6 Gleysolic and 4 Podzolic were sampled and analyzed for soil texture, bulk density, specific density, porosity, oxidizable carbon, total nitrogen content, pH in water, exchangeable acidity, exchangeable cations and anions (Mg, Ca, Mn, Al, S, Fe, B, P and K), cation exchange capacity and base saturation. No regular patterns were found in selected soil properties when tested between various soil units in silver birch stands. Furthermore, silver birch stands were found on sites, which topsoil (i) significantly differed in their cation exchange capacities, (ii) did not differ significantly in their pH values, and (iii) mostly differed in their clay contents and (iv) mostly did not differ in BS. Differences among the Humic Regosols, Luvic Gleysols, Sombric Brunisols, Eutric Brunisols and Humo-Ferric Podzols for silver birch stands in their topmost horizons of humified organic matter intimately mixed with the mineral fraction horizons and differences among particular soil horizons for the main soil properties under all the selected broadleaved tree species stands are discussed. |
Structural changes in the German agri-food complex: the end of small and medium enterprises?Miroslava BAVOROVÁAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2010, 56(12):591-600 | DOI: 10.17221/9/2010-AGRICECON The article describes the concentration process, structural changes and competitiveness in the German agri-food sector over the last decade. This descriptive analysis aims to outline the developments at the individual stages of the food chain and to identify the challenges the sector will face in the upcoming years. The study is based mainly on the data published by the German Statistical Office and the ZMP1, and the evaluation of the primary and secondary literature sources. The data shows that small and medium-sized enterprises were sustainable alongside the large ones and have played an important role in the German agriculture and food processing sectors in the recent years. Various business strategies can be expected to make the coexistence of small and large-scale enterprises also possible in the future. |
First Record of Horidiplosis ficifolii Harris 2003 (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in the Czech RepublicJakub BERÁNEK, Ivana ŠAFRÁNKOVÁPlant Protect. Sci., 2010, 46(4):189-191 | DOI: 10.17221/53/2009-PPS In November 2009 the gall midge species Horidiplosis ficifolii Harris 2003 was detected in the Czech Republic on leaves of an ornamental fig Ficus microcarpa. The insect is native to South East Asia, where it lives on the genus Ficus. No information is currently available on the prevalence of the pest in the countries of its origin. Imported Ficus plants from China into the Netherlands are sometimes heavily infested with the gall midge. In Europe it is also known from Denmark and the United Kingdom. As Horidiplosis ficifolii is a tropical species, no environmental and social damage is expected. |

Food Sci., 2009, 27(1):29-38 | DOI: 10.17221/130/2008-CJFS Phytic acid has been considered to be an antinutrient due to its ability to bind minerals and proteins, either directly or indirectly, thus changing their solubility, functionality, absorption, and digestibility. In this study, the influence of the flour type (type 500, type 850, and whole meal flour) and three different breadmaking procedures (direct, indirect, and with sourdough addition) on phytic acid was investigated. The results showed that the flour type influenced the phytic acid content. The phytic acid contents of flour type 500, type 850, and whole meal flour was 0.4380, 0.5756, and 0.9460 g/100 g dm, respectively. The dough and bread prepared from flour with a higher phytic acid content also contained higher amount of phytic acid. During fermentation and baking, degradation of phytic acid occurred. Phytic acid was also influenced by pH. Samples of lower pH had a lower phytic acid content. Dough prepared from flour type 500 and type 850 with 10% addition of sourdough had especially low phytic acid contents, and the bread prepared from the respective dough contained no phytic acid at all. |
Microbial contamination after sanitation of food contact surfaces in dairy and meat processing plantsJarmila Schlegelová, Vladimir Babák, Martina Holasová, Lucie Konstantinová, Lenka Necidová, Frantisek Šišák, Hana Vlková, Petr Roubal, Zoran JaglicCzech J. Food Sci., 2010, 28(5):450-461 | DOI: 10.17221/65/2009-CJFS The occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., and Escherichia coli in raw food materials, food products, and on food contact surfaces after sanitation was investigated during the period of 2005-2006 in three dairy cattle farms (120 samples), one dairy (124 samples), and two meat processing plants (160 samples). A total of 1409 isolates were identified. The epidemiological characterisation and determination of the virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance were performed on selected isolates. The level of bacterial contamination generally decreased during the production process (the contamination of food products was lower than that of raw material). However, the contamination of food contact surfaces was relatively high even after sanitation. Moreover, specific microbiological profiles were found on the inside equipment surfaces in dairy facilities, where genetically closely related multi-resistant strains persisting in biofilm communities may occur as demonstrated for staphylococci. Although the occurrence of potentially significant pathogens was not high, the microorganisms such as L. monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., and shiga-toxin positive E. coli principally contaminated the meat processing plants. B. cereus isolates, among which 76% were positive for diarrhogenic enterotoxin, typically occurred on the inside equipment surfaces and in the heat-treated products. |
Influence of mercury on chlorophyll content in winter wheat and mercury bioaccumulationD. Liu, X. Wang, Z. Chen, H. Xu, Y. The aims of the present studies are to investigate the effect of Hg on chlorophyll content in winter wheat var. jinan No. 17. Moreover, calcium (Ca) levels and bioaccumulation of Hg in wheat leaves were studied with the technique of inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometer (ICP-SF-MS). The study conducted a range of Hg concentrations from 0~500 mg Hg/kg in the dry weight soil. The soil was artificially contaminated with Hg as follows: 0, 100, 200, and 500 mg Hg/kg as HgCl2. At early stages of the wheat growth, both low and high concentration of Hg stimulates chlorophyll content, but inhibits chlorophyll content at later stages of the wheat growth. Furthermore, the concentrations of Ca and Hg in wheat leaves increased with the increasing concentration of Hg on the thirty-fourth day with the technique of ICP-SF-MS. The results indicate that Hg can accelerate the absorption of Ca in winter wheat and Hg stress may affect Ca levels in wheat leaves. |

Causes and Consequences of a Flood Wave on the Lower Reach of the Dyje River Near BřeclavOriginal PaperMilan Palát, Alois Prax, Milan Palát jr., Jaroslav RožnovskýSoil & Water Res., 2010, 5(4):121-127 | DOI: 10.17221/32/2010-SWR The settlements situated on broad flat floodplains of rivers are threatened by floods during increased water flows in the rivers. The floodplain of the Dyje river situated in the area between the Nové Mlýny water reservoir and Břeclav has been protected from former annual floods since the 70s of the last century due to the water-management measures. The realised measures including the construction of the new floodway protect the town of Břeclav as well. A long-term research into the soil water regime of the floodplain forest is underway in the region. The results obtained document its historical evolution and current status. Only in the early April of 2006 (i.e. after 34 years), an unexpected "flash flood" occurred again due to a specific climatic situation. The combination of the high snow cover in higher parts of the basin and a rapid warming up caused an intensive runoff. The so-called dry polder (floodplain forests, meadows and fields) above Břeclav protected the town and its infrastructure from potential catastrophic consequences. |
The effect of rockwool on physical properties of growing substrates for perennials 38M. Dubský, F. ŠrámekHort. Sci. (Prague), 2009, 36(1):38-43 | DOI: 10.17221/22/2008-HORTSCI The possibility of peat replacement with crushed water absorbent rockwool in growing substrates in the amount of 35% vol. was verified in the experiment with perennials in containers. Three types of substrates, i.e. peat, and two mixtures of peat with alternative components - green waste compost (25% vol.) or composted spruce bark (40% vol.) were compared. A sand box in the range of -0.5 to -10 kPa was used to determine retention curves and other physical properties of the components and substrates. The addition of rockwool to the peat substrate increased content of air and easy available water, the plant growth was not affected. Plants grown in substrates with alternative organic components were smaller in comparison to peat substrate. The growth of perennials significantly decreased, mainly in substrates with bark, but the plants had good market value. The addition of rockwool to these substrates had no significant effect on the growth. Crushed rockwool in the amount of 35% vol. can replace peat in peat substrates and in mixtures with alternative components. |

FabisVet Med - Czech, 2010, 55(7):331-335 | DOI: 10.17221/2928-VETMED During the archaeological excavation of a multicultural settlement at the Nitra-Chrenova site (south-western Slovakia) an assemblage of animal bone remains was revealed. In one of the settlement features dated to the Roman period a complete horse skeleton was discovered. An investigation was carried out in the hind limb of the horse's skeleton involving macroscopic and radiographic analysis. Exostoses were observed on the tibia, talus, calcaneus, tarsal and metatarsal bones. The articular surfaces were destroyed. The anatomical structure of the talus, calcaneus and tarsal bones was not visible due to new bone formation. Additionally, osteomyelitis was observed in the talus, calcaneus and tarsal bones. It is suggested that the pathological changes developed during the septic inflammation process as a consequence of the complicated wound of the tarsal region or the tarsal joint perforating trauma. |
Development of foliage biomass of young spruce and beech stands in the mountain water balance research areaP. Kantor, F. Šach, V. ČernohousJ. For. Sci., 2009, 55(2):51-62 | DOI: 10.17221/72/2008-JFS The investigation of foliage biomass development including LAI and the growth of spruce and beech stands in the juvenile stage (age 1 to 21 years) represents a special complementary study to long-term research of water balance components on the experimental forest hydrology area Deštné Mountainside. The experiment is located in the Orlické hory Mts. at the altitude of 900 m on a clear-felled area. In 1982 the spruce plantation was established at 1.5 ´ 1.5 m spacing (4,600 plants/ha) and the beech plantation at 1.0 ´ 1.0 m (10,000 plants/ha). According to tending programs applicable to forest stands in the Czech Republic, two improvement fellings were carried out (1995 and 2001) in spruce and none in beech. In 2002, some 1,550 spruce trees/ha (mean height 10.1 m) and 7,440 beech trees/ha (mean height 4.8 m) were recorded. At the end of the first vegetation season in 1982, the dry matter (DM) of foliage in spruce and beech amounted to 35 and 70 kg/ha, respectively. Five years later (1987), these values increased to 770 and 360 kg/ha in spruce and beech, respectively. At a stand age of 21 years, foliage DM was determined to be 11,940 kg/ha for spruce and 3,050 kg/ha for beech. At the same time, the leaf-area index (LAI) was calculated to be 5.55 and 5.94 in spruce and beech, respectively. The method of foliage biomass quantification, based on the determination of foliage DM of mean sample trees and stand density, enabled to acquire complementary data usable in long-term research of the water regime of spruce and beech and simultaneously to provide information on the potential of biomass production and LAI value of both main commercial species in mountain forests of the Czech Republic. |
Different approaches to the classification of vertical structure in homogeneous and heterogeneous forestsV. Šebeň, M. BošeľaJ. For. Sci., 2010, 56(4):171-176 | DOI: 10.17221/49/2009-JFS The paper shows difficulties in the evaluation of the forest status when considering forests with different height structure (uneven-aged forests). It is the main problem in categorizing such forests. Concerning the actual forest management conception in Slovakia, it is assumed that the area of forests with close-to-nature management system will increase. It leads to more structured forests, as for the tree species, age, height, as well as the spatial structure. The typical vertically homogeneous forests account for only 50% of all Slovak forests, according to results from the National Forest Inventory in Slovakia (NFI SR). During the processing of NFI data the stands were divided into 2 classes as follows: (i) vertically homogeneous stands, which are classified into nine growth stages; (ii) vertically heterogeneous stands, which are classified into two growth stages (lower and advanced), and stands in the process of regeneration. New approaches are not based on the visual subjective estimation of forest homogeneity, but on objective analyses of measured values from inventory plots (tree heights, diameters, and age). The paper shows a new approach to the classification of forest stands on an example of the variability of measured heights on inventory plots from NFI. |
The influence of feeding diets containing white cheese, produced with prebiotics and the potentially probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum strain, on the gastrointestinal microflora of ratsMonika Modzelewska-Kapituła, Jan Kłobukowski, Lucyna Kłębukowska, Danuta Wiśniewska-PantakCzech J. Food Sci., 2010, 28(2):139-145 | DOI: 10.17221/187/2008-CJFS The effects of inulin HPX and maltodextrins, and also the potentially probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum 14 strain, used separately and in combination in white cheese production, on the gastrointestinal microflora of Wistar rats was investigated. The prebiotic addition to the cheese was 2.5%, whereas probiotic and synbiotic cheeses contained at least 107 CFU/g of live L. plantarum cells. The counts of Bifidobacterium sp., Lactobacillus, coliforms, and the most probable number of anaerobic proteolytic bacteria were evaluated. After a 10-day feeding experiment, significant changes (P < 0.05) were noted in the most probable number of anaerobic proteolytic bacteria spores, which was the highest in the group receiving a diet with the cheese containing the potentially probiotic strain and inulin HPX. A short-time ingestion of low doses of prebiotics or synbiotics did not alter the counts of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and coliforms in healthy rats. |

MaPlant Soil Environ., 2010, 56(1):8-15 | DOI: 10.17221/129/2009-PSE A micro-plot field experiment with reduced urea 15N application was conducted to study the effects of urease inhibitor NBPT (N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide) and nitrification inhibitor DMPP(3,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrazolium dihydrogen) on the fate of applied urea 15N; it aimed to find an efficient way to reduce the urea N application rate while improving the agronomic and environmental benefits. Five treatments were installed, i.e., 180 kg N/ha (N1, conventional application rate), 126 kg N/ha (N2, reduced to 70% conventional application rate), N2 + NBPT, N2 + DMPP, and N2 + NBPT + DMPP. Compared with treatment N1, all the other treatments had a significantly higher total 15N recovery by both soil and plant (P < 0.05 48.20, 41.39, 37.69, 38.85 and 34.83% soil recovery for N2 + NBPT + DMPP, N2 + DMPP, N2 + NBPT, N2 and N1treatment, respectively; and 42.68, 40.86, 40.25, 37.18 and 36.30% plant recovery for N2 + NBPT + DMPP, N2 + DMPP, N2 + NBPT, N2, and N1 treatment, respectively). In the plant 15N recovery, the 15N absorbed in grain/stem was highest in treatment N2 + NBPT + DMPP. The maize biomass and the maize yield had a slight increase in treatment N2 + NBPT + DMPP, compared with those in treatment N1. In sum, for the maize production in study area, N2 + NBPT + DMPP application method would be a feasible way to ensure the normal maize yield while improving yield quality, saving urea fertilizer, and protecting the environment. |
Can Festulolium, Dactylis glomerata and Arrhenatherum elatius be used for extension of the autumn grazing season in Central Europe?J. Skládanka, V. Adam, P. Ryant, P. Doležal, Z. HavlíčekPlant Soil Environ., 2010, 56(10):488-498 | DOI: 10.17221/91/2010-PSE The paper compares the quality of Festulolium, Dactylis glomerata and Arrhenatherum elatius at the end of the growing season over three years with the contrasting weather in the Czech Republic. The effect of pre-utilisation dates in June or July on the quality of grass forage in October, November and December (harvest dates) was investigated. In the first two years, Arrhenatherum elatius exhibited higher yields (P < 0.05) than Festulolium and Dactylis glomerata. In all treatments, differences between the species and between the years were inconsistent for organic matter digestibility (OMD) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) but Festulolium showed the lowest crude protein (CP) in all years and crude fibre (CF) in the first 2 years. The longer re-growth time due to earlier final cut in summer increased the yield and decreased the nutritive value in winter. Yields of DM, OMD and CP content generally declined and the CF content increased with the delay of winter harvest. Significant species harvest date interactions in some years were due to the steep increase of CF and NDF in Festulolium. Based on DM yields and nutritive value, all species have some merits as forage for use in possibly extended grazing season. Festulolium and Dactylis glomerata could be used to extend the grazing period in continental conditions. Arrhenatherum elatius had sufficient quality at both dry and warm end of the growing season due to the fact that Arrhenatherum elatius was a representative of drought-resistant species; however, intense grazing could suppress it. |

In the case of Portuguese blue and Pinot noir pr飯ce, we additionally identified the influences of environmental conditions on their must composition and wine quality. Clear differences in sugar accumulation among varieties were detected, as well as differences in earliness. |
