The effect of exogenous application of salicylic acid and ascorbic acid on forage quality and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) under water deficit conditionsOriginal PaperNavvab Haji Hassani Asl, Farhad Farah Vash, Mohsen Roshdi, Bahram Mir Shekari, Mehdi GaffariPlant Soil Environ., 2024, 70(3):142-153 | DOI: 10.17221/181/2023-PSE The effects of the foliar application of plant growth regulators (PGRs), salicylic acid (SA) and ascorbic acid (AA) were studied on yield and some qualitative traits of corn silage under drought stress in a field experiment conducted in the Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center of Khoy in two consecutive years. The experiment was performed in four replications as a split plot in a randomised complete blocks design. Irrigation treatment was in two levels, ir75 and ir150, and the foliar applications of SA and AA at seven levels (100, 200, and 300 ppm, as well as a control treatment). The amount of water consumed in ir75 and ir150 during 10 and 7 times irrigation was 6 000 and 4 200 m3/ha, respectively. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content was increased over the plant growth period in both ir75 and ir150, but with the difference that its range was 3.72 to 12.9 nmol/g FW (fresh weight) under ir75 and 12.5–109.5 nmol/g FW under water shortage conditions. The results show that ir150 decreased plant height, forage yield, ear weight, and nitrogen uptake versus ir75. In plants treated with SA and AA, nitrogen uptake and chlorophyll content increases (45–33%) were observed compared to the control plants under ir75. In most traits, there was no significant difference between AA and SA levels, but plants treated with SA100 showed higher protein yield, dry forage yield, and ear yield. |

Utilising Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), we analysed the interplay of climate-related issues (F1), market dynamics (F2), and external events (F3), like COVID-19 and wars, alongside socio-demographic factors such as education, income, and land ownership. Findings revealed that higher education and increased agricultural income reduced price-related risks while expanding wheat cultivation areas heightened risk perceptions. Farmers in irrigated regions prioritised cyclical risks, whereas those in dry areas perceived climatic risks as more severe. Capital-intensive practices and storage facilities mitigate climate change and market variability risks, with committed wheat producers showing lower climate change risk perceptions. External factors like the Russian-Ukrainian war and the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impact irrigated area farmers. This study contributes to the existing literature by using empirical evidence from Turkish wheat farming to explore diverse risk perceptions, employing SEM to unravel complex risk factors and decision-making processes, thereby offering new insights for future agricultural risk management research. |

(Prague), 2022, 49(4):197-204 | DOI: 10.17221/27/2022-HORTSCI Producing high-quality daughter plants of the June-bearing strawberry is very important for fruit production around the year. This study was conducted to investigate the impacts of different substrates on the runner production of the June-bearing strawberry cultivar 'Senga Sengana'. In April 2019, strawberry mother plants were planted while the daughter plants were examined November 2019. The nursery trial field was separated into four substrate treatments, each included ten strawberry mother plants, approximately homogeneous. The place where the mother plants were planted was with the same substrate (PTS substrate "Pindstrup") and separated from the field for the rooting of the daughter plants. In the field for the rooting of the daughter plants, four types of substrates were used: The first substrate treatment (S1) (soil 50% - decomposed manure 50%); the second substrate treatment (S2) (PTS substrate "Pindstrup" with modules (pots) with a volume of 200 mL/daughter plant); the third substrate treatment S3 (river sand 50% - soil 50%); lastly, substrate treatment four S4 (sawdust 100%). During the research, several parameters were determined for the mother plants: the crown diameter, number of flowers, number of runners per plant, number of daughter plants per runner and number of daughter plants per plant. The examination of some of the qualitative parameters was also performed on the daughter plants: the crown diameter, root length and number of roots. Based on these parameters, the daughter plants were categorised according to the standards: A++, A+, A, A-, OS (out of the standard). From the examined results, it was concluded that S3 formed the largest number of daughter plants at 123 (A++ 19.1, A+ 45.1, A 28.7, A- 17.8, OS 12.3 plants); S2 formed 69.4 daughter plants, but with the highest standards (A++ 34.7, A+ 33.6, A- 1.1 plants); S4 formed 74.8 daughter plants (A++ 26.2, A+ 30.4, A 14 OS 4.2 plants), while S1 formed 62 daughter plants and showed the worst results for both the number of plants and the standard (A+ 7, A 3.8, A- 0.8, OS 50.4 plants). |

(Prague), 2022, 49(1):52-58 | DOI: 10.17221/15/2021-HORTSCI A field experiment was undertaken in a vineyard in southern Romania to evaluate the insect species abundance in this temperate climate area, over a period of 24 consecutive weeks, starting from April 2nd to September 27th, 2019. A total number of 19 303 insects were collected. After their morphological analysis, 89 species of insects were identified (nine orders and 28 families), of which 52 came from beneficial fauna (six orders and 14 families, 1 316 individuals) and 37 came from pest fauna (six orders and 26 families, 17 987 individuals). The beneficial species richness of the Coleoptera and Hymenoptera orders were the best represented. The pest insects of the Coleoptera and Hemiptera orders registered a high number of families, while the Thripidae family had the highest number of individuals. The highest diversity of insect species was found in the middle of April, and the lowest was found in the middle of August. The Bray-Curtis analysis revealed the stability of the insect community in the studied grapevine growing area. Grouping insects based on their similarities revealed the highest similarity (91.05-97%) in the warmest periods (June-August) and the lowest similarity (33%) in the spring (April). |
Application of FT-NIR spectroscopy as a rapid tool for analysis of the fish fillet chemical compositionOriginal PaperLucia Bene¹ová, Silvia Jakabová, Ladislav Ondru¹, Jozef GolianCzech J. Food Sci., 2022, 40(5):359-366 | DOI: 10.17221/30/2022-CJFS The basic chemical composition of the meat of fifteen freshwater and saltwater fish species was studied. Fourier transform-near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy was applied for determination of the content of fat, protein and dry matter in the fish meat samples. The fish species analysed differed significantly in dry matter, fat, and protein content (P < 0.05). The highest fat percentage was determined in the samples of Cyprinus carpio (17.14 ± 0.53%) and the lowest value was found in the samples of Lophius piscatorius (0.06 ± 0.003%). Thunnus albacares samples had the highest content of proteins (24.26 ± 1.89%), whereas the lowest protein content was observed in Oreochromis niloticus (14.73 ± 0.87%). The results of the measured dry matter varied from the highest content in C. carpio samples (35.73 ± 0.47%) to the lowest content of L. piscatorius samples (15.64 ± 0.43%). Principal component analysis (PCA) extracted three major groups, which differentiate the analysed samples based on their protein, lipid and dry matter content. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLSDA) confirmed the use of three variables (protein, fat, dry matter) measured by FT-NIR to separate the observed fish species. |

In this study, the damage the frost had on the flower buds of some cherry cultivars on 'Gisela 5' at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center (SWMREC) and different cherry scion/rootstock combinations at the Clarksville Horticultural Experiment Station (CHES) were determined. In cherries, the frost damage at SWMREC varied from 26.7% to 99.3% depending on the cherry cultivar while it varied from 41.9 to 99.3% at CHES depending on the cherry combinations. 'Rainier/Gisela 6' at CHES and 'NY119' at SWMREC were promising. The bud development stage during the freeze, the cultivar, the rootstock, the ages of the trees and the low temperature level were effective in the spring frost resistance. |

Prevention of spoilage by HRMs for processed food products can be done through the reduction and decontamination of these microorganisms. This review aims to provide a perception of HRM and mycotoxin contamination, assessment, prevention and their consequences for food and human health. |
Behaviours and attitudes of consumers towards bioplastics: An exploratory study in ItalyOriginal PaperSandra Notaro, Elisabetta Lovera, Alessandro PalettoJ. For. Sci., 2022, 68(4):121-135 | DOI: 10.17221/26/2022-JFS Bio-based and biodegradable plastics produced from wood residues can have a positive impact on the environment by replacing conventional plastics. However, the current bioplastics market is held back by a lack of available information and weak marketing activities aimed at final consumers. To increase the available information, the present study investigated the consumers' attitudes and behaviours towards bioplastic products. A web-based survey was conducted on a sample of potential consumers in Italy. 1 115 consumers filled out the questionnaire with a dropout rate in compilation of 14%. The results showed that the environmental characteristics of bioplastics (lower impact on climate change and renewable sources used to produce them) are considered more important by respondents than the non-environmental characteristics (technical properties, origin of raw material, potential trade-off between bioplastics and food production). The results highlighted that the most important behavioural factor is the purchase intentions, followed by control of perceived cost and subjective norm. It is interesting to emphasize that the cost of bioplastics compared to conventional plastics is a key variable in the choices of many Italian consumers. The results provided can be useful to the manufacturing industries to better understand the consumers' attitudes towards bioplastics. |

We researched the effects of liming (no lime and lime with 1 t/ha) and mineral fertilisers (control – no fertilisers, PK-P60K60, N20PK-N20P60K60, N80PK-N80P60K60, and N140PK-N140P60K60) for nine years on the Danthonia alpina Vest. grassland community. Based on Brown-Blanquet cover abundance, we calculated Shannon-Wiener evenness and abundance of plant functional groups (based on height, canopy structure, storage organs presence and flowering duration). We also researched Landolt’s ecological indicator values for nutrients, moisture, reaction, light, and temperature. Results revealed that fertilisers stimulated tall species with longer flowering duration. Shannon-Wiener evenness in control was 0.45, and N20PK increased to 0.71 but significantly decreased in treatment N140PK (0.25). Mean Landolt ecological value for nutrients and moisture increased while temperature dropped. The coverage of legumes and Landolt indicator value for nutrients increased because of the lime application, while the lime had no effect on Shannon-Wiener evenness and abundance of functional groups. Greater Shannon-Wiener evenness in treatments of PK and N20PK is a prerequisite for resistance to the effects of extreme climate events. |

Effect of agricultural socialisation services on green grain production efficiency: Evidence from Jiangsu Province, ChinaOriginal PaperYue-Dong Zhang, Jing-Jing Li, Yi-Fang Zheng, Jia-Xian XuAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2025, 71(4):173-184 | DOI: 10.17221/296/2023-AGRICECON In this study, we examine the effect of Agricultural Socialisation Services (ASS) on green grain production efficiency in Jiangsu Province, China, by using data from the China Land Economy Survey. We used the generalised random forests model in this research to address potential issues of farming household self-selection into ASS and unobserved heterogeneity in treatment effects. The results show that participation in ASS significantly improves green production efficiency, particularly for small-scale farmers. Efficiency gains are most pronounced in critical agronomic operations such as pest control, seeding and planting, whereas smaller efficiency effects are observed in plowing, harvesting and straw treatment. The findings suggest that targeted expansion of ASS could substantially enhance sustainable farming practices, especially for resource-constrained farms. This study provides important policy insights for promoting agricultural sustainability through improved access to and delivery of agricultural services, contributing to more efficient and ecofriendly grain production. |
Effect of lotus seed paste as a fat replacer on the quality attributes of pork pattiesOriginal PaperShirong Huang, Fenfen Chen, Min Tang, Shengnan Zhao, Dongfang ChenCzech J. Pork patties were prepared by substituting varying levels of fat (0, 20, 40, and 60%) with LSP. LSP addition increased moisture while reducing fat content. Compared to control, LSP-added pork patties had significantly higher thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, L* values and microbial counts (P < 0.05), but lower thawing, centrifugal, and cooking losses, and diameter reduction. Furthermore, LSP incorporation enhanced hardness, springiness, chewiness and adhesiveness of the patties. Patties with 60% fat replacement by LSP had the highest b* value and cohesiveness, and the lowest a* value. Substituting 40% or more fat significantly improved the colour, taste, texture and overall acceptability of pork patties (P < 0.05). |

(Prague), 2025, 52(1):42-52 | DOI: 10.17221/11/2024-HORTSCI To select tree peony varieties with high ornamental value suitable for the hot and humid environment of the south Yangtze River area, 74 tree peony varieties from the Chenshan Botanical Garden in Shanghai were selected as experimental materials. The experiment involved initial selection for leaf humidity and heat tolerance, assessing the ornamental value during the flowering period of the following year and measuring a series of indicators such as the relative chlorophyll content of the leaves. Methods including principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and comprehensive membership function were employed. The results indicated that among the varieties assessed for humidity and heat tolerance, 43 obtained a composite score of 3.75 or above. Upon further assessment of the flowering period for these 43 varieties in the subsequent year, 14 varieties clustered in the top tier based on their scoring for ornamental value. Then, during the summer season, physiological indicators were measured for the previously selected 14 tree peony varieties. Combining these data with the comprehensive membership function, the humidity and heat tolerance of each variety were quantified. The synthesis of scores, combined with cluster analysis, revealed that varieties including ‘Yinhong Qiaodui’, ‘Shengge Jin’, ‘Linghua Zhanlu’, ‘Baixue Gongzhu’, ‘Di Guan’, and ‘Cunsong Ying’ exhibit both high ornamental value and tolerance to humidity and heat, making them suitable for cultivation in the south Yangtze River area. |

Food Sci., 2025, 43(4):291-299 | DOI: 10.17221/143/2024-CJFS sn-1,3-Dioleoyl-2-palmitoylglycerol (OPO) is a structural triglyceride with a specific distribution of fatty acids, which is an important component of breast milk fat and which can better promote the absorption of minerals and energy in infants. In this study, a lab-made immobilised Aspergillus niger lipase (IM-ANL), which is more economical than a commercial lipase, was used for hydrolysis to produce free fatty acids (FFA) and acidolysis interesterification to produce OPO. The enzyme was used for multiple purposes, reducing the cost of enzymatic production. The optimum conditions for hydrolysis were determined by experiments: the amount of IM-ANL enzyme dosage was 3%, the reaction temperature was 45 °C, and the reaction time was 48 h. The optimum conditions for acidolysis interesterification were as follows: the amount of IM-ANL enzyme dosage was 4%, the molar ratio of tripalmitin to oleic acid was 1 : 8, the reaction temperature was 55 °C, and the reaction time was 3 h. In this study, economical palm stearin and high oleic acid sunflower seed oil were selected as reaction raw materials, and the reaction temperature was moderate, the safety risk was low, the energy consumption was reduced, the process was more economical, and the economic value of high oleic acid vegetable oil was improved, which was conducive to the further promotion of OPO production. |

The valuation of these services by stakeholders offers important information that can be used to manage them more efficiently. In agroecosystems, individual stakeholder preferences can be heterogeneous and even opposing. This paper puts forward a novel analytical framework based on game theory to integrate the valuation of ecosystem services by different stakeholders into agroecosystem management. To illustrate it, the agricultural region of Los Vélez (south-eastern Spain) is used and three game modalities are applied (prisoner’s dilemma, common-pool resource game and battle of the sexes). Results indicate that the use of game theory contributes to more effective conflict resolution between stakeholders with different interests and priorities, making it easier to reach consensus on optimal management strategies. This approach can guide policymakers in the design and implementation of socially accepted agroecosystem management policies. |

Food Sci., 2025, 43(6):438-449 | DOI: 10.17221/24/2025-CJFS This study examines composite films made from pectin and alginate, enhanced with ginger essential oil (GEO) at 0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5% concentration. The films were analysed for their structure, physical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activities, and effectiveness in preserving sliced bread over 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days. The outcomes presented that incorporating GEO upgraded pectin-alginate films' properties. SEM images revealed increased essential oil distribution on the film surface with higher GEO concentrations, indicating good compatibility. Higher GEO concentrations enhanced the films' abilities to scavenge free radicals DPPH, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl; and ABTS, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and inhibit bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli). Furthermore, increasing GEO concentrations in the films helped maintain key quality attributes of sliced bread, such as moisture content, water activity, microbial counts, and firmness. Films with 1.0 and 1.5% GEO concentrations were the most effective in preserving bread, potentially inhibiting mould formation and maintaining sensory properties over the 8-day storage period. This study demonstrates that pectin-alginate films supplemented with GEO at 1 and 1.5% concentration are suitable for storing sliced bread. |

We theorised top dressing (TD) higher amounts of soybean meal (SBM) might mimic these effects. Fifty-one multiparous Holstein cows 1 day after calving were assigned to 3 dietary treatments: a base total mixed ration (CON) with 196 g/kg crude protein and 329 g/kg neutral detergent fibre; 17 cows TD with l kg of SBM (SBM1); and 17 cows TD with 2 kg of SBM (SBM2) for 30 days. Milk and milk components were measured at days 9, 18, and 27. Rumen and urine samples were collected on day 27; blood samples were obtained on day 30. Statistical inference was by JMP software (Version 10.0.2, 2012) with production variables analysed as a repeated measures design. Cows fed SBM increased milk yield (P = 0.02; 35.4, 36.6, and 42.6 kg/day for CON, SBM1, and SBM2, respectively). Yield of milk true protein was not different among treatments. Cows fed SBM had lower serum non esterified fatty acids concentrations at day 30 (1.35, 1.13, and 0.59 mM/l; P < 0.01). We conclude that SBM TD beginning immediately after calving may increase milk yield rapidly and decrease dependence on fatty acids for energy. |

A total of 103 different provenances occurring naturally across 12 countries were planted in research plots No. 67, Èernovice (Èeskomoravská vrchovina), and No. 77, Nové Hrady (Novohradské hory). The total tree height, diameter at breast height (DBH) and assessment of the health status of all trees in the area were measured with the same methodology. Subsequently, the volume of large wood was calculated by the volume equation, and the growing stock per hectare was recalculated. Based on our analysis of average height growth, it was found that trees with the best growth came from provenances that included the Czech provenances CZ 70 – ®dírec nad Doubravou, CZ 82 – Vizovice, CZ 42 – Lukov, CZ 76 – Nýrsko, Suchý Kámen, and CZ 53 – Opoèno. The last three mentioned provenances also dominated in other growth parameters (DBH and volume of large wood). Of the foreign provenances, D 146 – Schwarzwald mit Baar, S 9 – Kriváò, and S 6 – Èierny Váh produced trees that showed above-average values. The smallest growth in height was found in the trees from the provenances BG 132 – Rila, Borovets, F 104 – Departement de µ Aude, I 228 – Vallombrosa, A 93 – Wörschachwald. Although some trees of Italian provenance achieve above-average volume, due to high mortality, they are not suitable for economic use in the forests of the Czech Republic. Based on the European zoning for forests, the units from the Central European region (3.11.0 – Èeské Polabí, 3.32.0 – Schwarzwald with foothills and Baar, and 9.14.0 – Southern Apennine Mountains) were the best rated in all parameters. Specimens from 9.12.0 – Mountain forest of the northern Apennines, and 4.05.0 – Vosges showed the lowest parameters. |
Analysing the impact of climate change on evapotranspiration in a climate-sensitive region: Example of Central Anatolia (Türkiye)Original PaperMuhammet Azlak, Levent ªaylanSoil & Water Res., 2024, 19(1):64-76 | DOI: 10.17221/107/2023-SWR Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the main components of the hydrological cycle and plays a crucial role for water resources. It is sensitive to climate change, and therefore, estimating ET under changing climatic conditions is essential in comprehending hydrological processes, particularly in agricultural water management. In this study, the impact of climate change on ET in the Central Anatolia region of Türkiye was assessed. For this purpose, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios based on two Earth System Models, HadGEM2-ES and MPI-ESM-MR, were employed for three future time periods: 2025–2049, 2050–2074, and 2075–2098. As a baseline period for comparison, the time interval spanning 1980–2000 was considered. ET values were computed by using the Penman-Monteith equation, recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization, along with five widely utilized methods. The study revealed a consistent increase in ET depending on the employed methods for the future period in response to climate change. The average of the ET amounts for the region was determined as 1089 mm for the reference period 1980–2000. As the average of the six methods utilized, amounts estimated by HadGEM RCP4.5, HadGEM RCP8.5, MPI RCP4.5, and MPI RCP8.5 models for the future period were obtained as 1 199, 1 285, 1 166, and 1 248 mm, respectively. Considering the results, it is found that the ET amount in the Central Anatolia region of Türkiye will increase by up to 11% by the end of this century under the optimistic RCP 4.5 scenario and by up to 19% under the extreme RCP 8.5 scenario. These findings regarding increased evapotranspiration play a significant role in water resource management and agricultural production planning in the region, holding crucial implications for sustainable agriculture. |

In this research, a prototype of a multipurpose ohmic heating apparatus was successfully designed, fabricated, and tested. This apparatus was designed based on low-cost and versatile sensors and components available worldwide. Three independent chambers could be operated parallelly and individually with different treatments. Parameter data, i.e., voltage, electrical current, the temperature of heated material and environmental humidity-temperature, could be recorded by an embedded data logging system. The sensor had been tested and validated by comparing all the sensors used with commercial standard instruments. The result showed that all sensors had high measurement accuracy, indicated by very low mean absolute error (MAE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), with R2 > 0.999. The performance test revealed that product temperature could be accurately maintained according to the set point temperature with a deviation value lower than 0.1 °C. The data logging system was able to record and store the parameter data in SD card memory for up to several days without interruption. The prototype of the ohmic heating apparatus could be an effective alternative to process many purposes such as pasteurisation, cooking, warming, and fermentation based on the ohmic heating principle. |

Sci., 2024, 70(7):353-367 | DOI: 10.17221/1/2024-JFS In response to the decline of Central European spruce monocultures driven by various factors, the Demonstration Object of Reconstruction of Spruce Forests (DORS) was established in Husárik locality, Javorníky Mts., northwestern Slovakia. The area includes the Husárik trial site, where the applicability and efficiency of different artificial regeneration methods are studied. The trial was established on a 24-ha area cleared following the outbreak of spruce bark beetles in 2011. Its altitude is 800 m a.s.l., aspect NW, slope 30%, the soil is Ranker on the soft flysch sandstone bedrock. Our study covered 4 conifers – Norway spruce (spruce), European larch (larch), silver fir (fir), and Douglas fir (doug fir). Each species was regenerated using 4 different approaches: planting of commercial bareroot transplants (BR), planting of container transplants (CON), direct seeding (DS) and vegetative cell seeding using seed shelters (VCS). Results concerning the nine-year development of transplants and seedlings, along with the calculation of cost-efficiency, are presented. As to the species, BR and CON transplants of spruce and larch reached the best survival and height. The DS larch was the most cost-efficient method of establishment of a successfully established plantation (survival > 50%; stem height > 2/3 of the weed height; ratio of damaged individuals < 50%) with a total cost of 2 372 EUR·ha–1. On the contrary, the slow initial growth of fir and Douglas fir and their extensive damage resulted in the incomparably higher cost of establishment of their successfully established plantation, such as 4 980 EUR·ha–1 for five-years-old BR fir transplants. Our findings documented that current efforts related to the restoration of salvage-felled clearings remained difficult, especially in the case of introduction or reestablishment of coniferous tree species more vulnerable to open site conditions. |
Identification, classification, and transcriptional analysis of TCP gene family from Scutellaria baicalensis and SbTCP genes response under MeJA and SA treatmentsOriginal PaperChangying Dong, Purong Zhang, Dan WangPlant Protect. Sci., 2024, 60(4):393-406 | DOI: 10.17221/61/2024-PPS TCP transcription factor is a plant-specific gene family which plays important roles in many developmental control pathways, regulating secondary metabolites and plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. Nevertheless, this gene family remains unknown in Scutellaria baicalensis. Here, by identifying and analysing all the TCP transcription factor family members based on the transcriptome of S. baicalensis, a total of 19 SbTCP genes were obtained following gene classification, the phylogenetic relationship, conserved domain structure, functional differentiation, and an expression activity analysis. Phylogenetic analysis grouped the SbTCP genes into two subfamilies; we also found that SbTCP with the same motif structure clustered together in the evolutionary tree, and these results suggest that SbTCP proteins with the same gene structure have similar functions. Gene Ontology (GO) categorised the SbTCP genes into 17 functional subcategories, suggesting that they have diversified in functionality, even though their putative proteins share a number of conserved motifs. After the MeJA and SA treatments, the expression of SbTCP candidate genes containing MeJA and SA promoter elements was significantly higher or lower compared with the control, indicating that these candidate SbTCP genes could respond to different concentrations of MeJA and SA treatments. These comprehensive data provide a reference for elucidating the functions of TCP transcription factor family in the growth, development, and MeJA and SA stress response of S. baicalensis, this study can create a new avenue for understanding the role of TCP gene family in S. baicalensis. |

Food Sci., 2024, 42(5):382-389 | DOI: 10.17221/112/2024-CJFS The aim of the study was to define and compare the quality properties of dry-cured heat-treated meat products from the meat of free-living semi-aquatic wildlife species. Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) and nutria (Myocastor coypus) are wild animals whose presence in the countryside is regulated in the Czech Republic. Basic chemical, microbiological, sensory analyses, and instrumental measurements of the colour and texture of dry-cured sausages (pork, as a control group with 51% lean pork and experimental groups with 51% lean beaver and nutria meat in fresh state) were performed. There were no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05) in microbiological counts per gram between the sausage groups according to the meat used after 3 weeks of storage. In the sensory analysis, beaver sausages were rated as the darkest and least attractive (P < 0.05). The data obtained using the Meullenet-Owens Razor Shear (MORS) test did not show a statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). However, a significant difference (P < 0.05) was measured between the beaver product and the pork and nutria variants using the compression method. |

A 10-year field experiment was conducted in a paddy field and included three treatments: rice straw biochar (SC); rice straw (RS), no biochar or rice straw. The elemental analyser, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) analysis were used to study the soil humus composition and structure under different treatments. The results verified that the incorporation of rice straw and biochar significantly improved soil pH values and the soil organic carbon contents compared with the control. Rice straw significantly increased the contents of extractable humus, humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid in soil, while biochar only significantly affected HA and humic degree values. The molecular structure of HA affected by biochar is characterised by high humification and aromaticity, but rice straw increased the aliphaticity of the HA structure, as presented by elemental composition. Moreover, 3D EEM spectroscopy combined with FRI analysis showed that RS treatment formed soil humus had more aliphatic compounds, while SC treatment increased the aromatic components of humus. These results suggest that rice straw promotes the renewal of humus, and biochar enhances the humification degree of humus and the aromaticity of HA. |
