Food Sci., 2018, 36(2):139-145 | DOI: 10.17221/267/2017-CJFS Germinated seeds are rich in various nutrients but are vulnerable to fungal contamination which favours micromycete formation on the sprouts. The main aim of this work was an investigation of strategies to reduce the contamination of sprouted seed foods. Over the course of 96 hours of sprouting, seeds of organic spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), naked oat (Avena nuda L.), triticale (xTriticosecale) and rye (Secale cereale L.) were irrigated in water filtered using the Pazdroid Med-1500 filtration device with and without 4% ethyl alcohol. Germinated seeds were stored at 18°C for one, three and seven days and the levels of Mucor spp., Penicillium spp., Alternaria spp., Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp. and Bipolaris spp were determined. Micromycete numbers were greater in sprouted winter wheat and rye but were reduced when these were soaked and irrigated with filtered water and filtered water containing 4% ethyl alcohol. Filtered water led to greater reductions in micromycete numbers in sprouted winter and spring wheat than in other seeds. |
Soil nitrate accumulation and leaching in conventional, optimized and organic cropping systemsOriginal PaperDapeng WANG, Liang ZHENG, 3, Songdong GU, Yuefeng SHI, 5, Long LIANG, Fanqiao MENG, Yanbin GUO, Xiaotang JU, Wenliang WUPlant Soil Environ., 2018, 64(4):156-163 | DOI: 10.17221/768/2017-PSE Excessive nitrogen (N) and water input, which are threatening the sustainability of conventional agriculture in the North China Plain (NCP), can lead to serious leaching of nitrate-N (NO3--N). This study evaluates grain yield, N and water consumption, NO3--N accumulation and leaching in conventional and two optimized winter wheat-summer maize double-cropping systems and an organic alfalfa-winter wheat cropping system. The results showed that compared to the conventional cropping system, the optimized systems could reduce N, water consumption and NO3--N leaching by 33, 35 and 67-74%, respectively, while producing nearly identical grain yields. In optimized systems, soil NO3--N accumulation within the root zone was about 80 kg N/ha most of the time. In the organic system, N input, water consumption and NO3--N leaching was reduced even more (by 71, 43 and 92%, respectively, compared to the conventional system). However, grain yield also declined by 46%. In the organic system, NO3--N accumulation within the root zone was generally less than 30 kg N/ha. The optimized systems showed a considerable potential to reduce N and water consumption and NO3--N leaching while maintaining high grain yields, and thus should be considered for sustainable agricultural development in the NCP. |
Effect of long-term mineral fertilizer application on soil enzyme activities and bacterial community compositionOriginal PaperYanling CHEN, Jintao LIU, Shutang LIUPlant Soil Environ., 2018, 64(12):571-577 | DOI: 10.17221/658/2018-PSE Soil bacteria are critical to maintain soil fertility. In this study, soil chemical properties, enzyme activities and soil bacterial community from a long-term fertilizer experiment (37 years) were analysed to elaborate the effects of long-term mineral fertilizer application on soil enzyme activities and bacterial community composition. Compared with control treatment, bacterial community richness was reduced in low nitrogen (N) fertilizer and high N fertilizer treatments and increased in high N fertilizer and phosphorus (P), high N fertilizer and potassium (K) (N2K), and high N fertilizer, P and K (N2PK) treatments. The distribution of each phylum and genera was obviously changed and the range of the dominant phyla was not affected in all fertilization treatments. Principal component analysis showed that soil bacterial community in the N2K treatment was clearly different than in the N2PK treatment. The N2PK treatment had much higher available P, total organic carbon, invertase, urease and phosphatase activities than the N2K treatment, which might change soil bacterial community composition. In conclusion, fertilization with combined application of P, K and N in appropriate proportions is an optimum approach for improving soil quality and soil bacterial community abundance in non-calcareous fluro-aquic soils in the North China Plain. |
Diagnosis of cerebral ventriculomegaly in felines using 0.25 Tesla and 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imagingOriginal PaperP. Przyborowska, Z. Adamiak, P. Holak, Y. Zhalniarovich, W.S. MaksymowiczVet Med - Czech, 2018, 63(1):28-35 | DOI: 10.17221/59/2017-VETMED Twenty European shorthair cats with neurological disorders, aged 1-3 years and with body weights of 2.6-4.05 kg, were studied in low-field and high-field magnetic resonance imaging systems. Aims of the study were to evaluate the dilation of lateral ventricles in the examined population of cats with the use of quantitative analysis methods and to identify any differences in the results of low- and high-field magnetic resonance imaging. The average brain height was determined to 27.3 mm, and the average volume of the brain was 10 699.7 mm3. Moderately enlarged ventricles were observed in 16 symptomatic cats. Moderate unilateral enlargement was observed in one cat. Mild ventricular asymmetry was described in four animals. The average difference in ventricular height between measurements obtained in low- and high-field magnetic resonance imaging was 0.37 ± 0.16% and for ventricular volume it was 0.62 ± 0.29%. The magnetic resonance imaging scan did not reveal statistically significant differences in brain height or volume between healthy and cats with ventriculomegaly. The differences in the results of low- and high-field magnetic resonance imaging were not statistically significant. Described findings could facilitate the interpretation of magnetic resonance images in cats with ventriculomegaly or hydrocephalus. |

The aim of the testing was to investigate the anthelmintic resistance of cyathostomins and ascarids. One hundred and eighty-six horses were included in the test, 54 of which were infected by ascarids and 174 by cyathostomins. Faecal egg count reduction tests were used to assess anthelmintic resistance. The faecal egg count reduction for ascarids was within the range of 87.9% to 100% for avermectins and 100% for pyrantel embonate. Faecal egg count reduction for cyathostomins ranged from 99% to 100% for avermectins and 89.3% to 98.2% for pyrantel embonate. |
Is economic institutional adaptation feasible for agri-environmental policy? Case of Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition standardsReviewJana POLAKOVAAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2018, 64(10):456-463 | DOI: 10.17221/138/2017-AGRICECON This review focuses on Czech implementation of standards for soil and water protection called Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions (GAEC), with linkage to the European Union (EU) level. I investigate different elements of adaptive institutional economics: (i) summarise current knowledge regarding the social reasons for introducing GAEC; (ii) assess the evidence linked to GAEC to better understand the potential as well as boundaries of formalizing cause-effect links; (iii) clarify the pertinence of producers' claims on costs accruing from GAEC implementation. These three points highlight the thesis of this paper: implementation in farmers' practices of the theoretical concept of sustainability in terms of bridging together economics, society and the environment. The economic reasoning for GAEC introduction within adaptive institutional economics stems from the relational positioning of the knowledge of the costs of the impact of agricultural land use on other characteristic rural land uses. GAEC are needed, albeit the size of support obtained by producers surpasses the costs of complying; therefore, the result pays off for farms. We have learned that GAEC implementation is important from regional to EU levels and that its role is more related to economic institutional adaptation than to regulation. Adaptation of institutional economics is therefore feasible, making it possible to understand GAEC as a network which manages and enables knowledge transfer linked directly to regulation. Institutional economics can link sustainability with farmers' practices and accounts for the behaviour of the farmers. In this review, I find that, for society, it is necessary to require measurement of agri-environmental outcomes for water resources, soil and biodiversity through GAEC at appropriate scales. These scales are likely to be relevant to adaptive institutional economy localities perceived by the rural public. |
Control of plant sap-sucking insects using entomopathogenic fungi Isaria fumosorosea strain (Ifu13a)Original PaperGhulam Ali Bugti, Cao Na, Wang Bin, Lin Hua FengPlant Protect. Sci., 2018, 54(4):258-264 | DOI: 10.17221/118/2017-PPS The virulence of the Isaria fumosorosea strain (Ifu13a) against different plant sap-sucking insects such as Jacobiasca formosana Paoli (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), and Stephanitis nashi Esaki et Takeya (Hemiptera: Tingidae) in laboratory condition at 21 ± 1°C temperature and 78 ± 5% relative humidity was determined. We found that the Ifu13a strain had excellent potential to control the target insects. The mortality of the tested insect species ranged from 81 to 100% in the concentration of 1 × 108 conidia/ml. However, the lowest mortality of 33% was observed in the concentration of 1 × 105 conidia/ml against the S. nashi population. Median lethal times (LT50) were obtained from a regression-probit value which indicated 4.1, 4.1, 4.8, and 7.3 days at a concentration of 1 × 108 conidia/ml, whereas, median lethal concentration dosages (LC50) were calculated as 3.9 × 103, 6.8 × 104, 3.0 × 104, and 6.9 × 105 conidia/ml against J. formosana, A. gossypii, B. tabaci, and S. nashi, respectively. The present study showed that the Ifu13a fungal strain is highly pathogenic to the target insects, and it can be used as a biocontrol agent against plant sap-sucking insect species under favourable weather conditions. |

Research material included table potato tubers obtained in a three-year field experiment. The experiment was a split-plot design with three replicates. The factors were as follows: factor I - three table potato cultivars (Bartek, Gawin and Honorata), factor II - five methods of biostimulant and herbicide application (1. control - without biostimulants or herbicides; 2. Harrier 295 ZC (linuron + chlomazon); 3. Harrier 295 ZC (linuron + chlomazon) and growth regulator Kelpak®SL; 4. Sencor 70 WG (metribuzin); 5. Sencor 70 WG (metribuzin) and growth regulator Asahi®SL. Variance analysis demonstrated that total sugars, reducing sugars and sucrose content were affected by the biostimulants and herbicides applied as well as cultivars and weather conditions. Compared with control, a significant increase in total sugars followed an application of Sencor 70 WG as well as Sencor 70 WG and the growth regulator Asahi®SL whereas reducing sugars and sucrose content significantly increased after Sencor 70 WG and the growth regulator Asahi®SL were applied. |

(Prague), 2018, 45(4):173-180 | DOI: 10.17221/101/2017-HORTSCI Apple trees which grafted on M.M. 106 stocks were planted at the beginning of spring 2014 in pots at the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice, Poland. The used treatments in the experiment were: NPK fertilization and bioproducts: Fertigo (Manure), Micosat, Humus UP, Humus Active + Aktywit PM, BioFeed Quality, BioFeed Amin, Vinassa, Florovit Natura and Florovit Eko. In the spring, these treatments were applied to apple trees alone or enriched with Pantoea sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Klebsiella oxytoca and Rhizobium sp. bacterial strains. Growth, yield and fruit quality parameters were evaluated. The results revealed that photosynthetic rate was greatly improved by the addition of bacteria to Fertigo (Manure), Micosat, Humus UP and Humus Active + Aktywit PM as compared to NPK. Tree trunk thickness was significantly enhanced with Vinassa, Florovit Natura and Florovit Eko enriched with bacteria. The application of bacterial strains increased the effectiveness of Fertigo (Manure), Humus UP, Humus Active + Aktywit PM, Biofeed Amin and Yeast in increasing significantly number and weight of fruits as compared to NPK. |

Econ. - Czech, 2018, 64(6):256-264 | DOI: 10.17221/270/2016-AGRICECON The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) emphasizes the right of everyone to have access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food in its Rome Declaration. This article suggests how this noble FAO goal can be achieved. We suggest that a first step could be the introduction of a global meat tax, where the size of the negative externalities from meat production could be calculated based on foresight and big data. Applying the tool of a global meat tax will lead to a "double dividend" as negative externalities are reduced and at the same time huge tax revenues will be generated which could be used to make further steps in the direction of achieving the stated FAO goal in the Rome Declaration. |

The highest resistance to the pathogen was observed in bell-type pepper. Moreover, genetic diversity of pure lines was investigated using selected inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) primers. Generally, genetic markers showed genetic diversity, so that long-type pure lines were separated from the other accessions. This is the first report on host reactions of Turkish pure lines as breeding material. These results provide significant information for future pepper breeding programs. |

Food Sci., 2018, 36(3):227-232 | DOI: 10.17221/328/2017-CJFS Changes in mango fruit quality, malondialdehyde content, and enzymatic activities in response to pathogen Alternaria alternata infection were studied. A. alternata significantly affected the appearance of mango fruit at 5 and 7 days after treatment (DAT). The quality of pathogen-infected fruit first showed a significant decrease in titratable acidity and vitamin C content and a significant increase in pH since 3 DAT. The malondialdehyde content was higher than that in the untreated controls at 3 and 7 DAT. The enzyme activities of ascorbate peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase showed significant increases since 3 DAT. Significant increases in l-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and superoxide dismutase activities were observed at 7 DAT. These results indicate that A. alternata infection first significantly affects some biochemical constituents and enzyme activities in mango fruit since 3 DAT and that there was no significant effect on appearance until 5 DAT. |
Use of active microorganisms of the Pseudomonas genus during cultivation of maize in field conditionsOriginal PaperZlata HOLEČKOVÁ, Martin KULHÁNEK, Josef HAKL, Jiří BALÍKPlant Soil Environ., 2018, 64(1):26-31 | DOI: 10.17221/725/2017-PSE The aim of this research is to estimate the influence of a bioeffector (BE) application on dry matter yield and nutrient content (P, K, Ca, Mg, S) in maize (Zea mays L.). Between 2014 and 2016, a field experiment with silage maize as a testing plant was realized on sandy loam Cambisol. The application of Pseudomonas sp. in combination with phosphorus (rock phosphate (RP) or triple superphosphate (TSP)) and nitrogen fertilizers (ammonium nitrate with urea, ammonium nitrate with limestone, calcium nitrate or ammonium sulfate with a nitrification inhibitor) and with different application strategies was studied. The effects of a bioeffector application on the increase of dry matter yields were not confirmed. An important influence on the BE application and its activity was probably those of soil and site conditions and competition of the researched microorganisms with other present microorganisms. Higher yields of dry matter were shown in treatments where P fertilizers were applied. There was almost no difference between the application of RP and TSP. This could be caused by the fact that the soil had a slightly acidic pH value. In this case, the RP showed similar results to the TSP. The application of bioeffector significantly increased Mg, K and S contents in maize above-ground biomass. An increase of the Ca content was almost significant and a tendency towards a higher average content of phosphorus was also recorded. |

The objective of research was to evaluate hyperspectral visible and near infrared reflectance (VNIR) spectroscopy for field-scale prediction of soil properties and assessment of factors affecting soil spectra. Two hundred soil samples taken from the experiment field (soil depth: 30 cm; sampling grid: 15 × 15 m) were scanned using portable spectroradiometer (350-1050 nm) to identify spectral differences of soil treated with ten different rates of mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer (0-300 kg N/ha). Principal component analysis revealed distinction between higher- and lower-N level treatments conditioned by differences in soil pH, texture and soil organic matter (SOM) composition. Partial least square regression resulted in very strong correlation and low root mean square error (RMSE) between predicted and measured values for the calibration (C) and validation (V) dataset, respectively (SOM, %: RC2 = 0.75 and RV2 = 0.74; RMSEC = 0.334 and RMSEV = 0.346; soil pH: RC2 = 0.78 and RV2 = 0.62; RMSEC = 0.448 and RMSEV = 0.591). Results indicated that hyperspectral VNIR spectroscopy is an efficient method for measurement of soil functional attributes within precision farming framework. |
Genetic differences in eggshell ultrastructural properties of Saudi native chicken breeds kept at high ambient temperaturesOriginal PaperMoataz Fathi, Tarek Ebeid, Gamal Rayan, Salah El-Safty, Osama Abou-EmeraCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2018, 63(9):363-370 | DOI: 10.17221/29/2018-CJAS Egg quality and eggshell ultrastructural properties of four Saudi native chicken breeds were compared to detect genetic differences. A total of 480 laying hens at 28 weeks of age, representing four Saudi native breeds of chicken (black, black-barred, gray, and brown) kept under hot environmental conditions (34 ± 1°C) were randomly assigned to the current experiment. Laying hens were housed in individual cages in an open-sided house during hot summer season. A total of 360 intact eggs were randomly collected (90 from each breed) for egg quality assessment. Eggshell samples were prepared to evaluate ultrastructural measurements using a scanning electron microscope. No significant variations between the breeds concerning egg weight, egg-shape index, yolk index, albumen (%), yolk (%), shell (%), and shell thickness traits were detected. Brown breed showed significantly higher Haugh units compared to the other breeds. Moreover, brown breed scored the best for eggshell breaking strength trait (the highest crack resistance), followed by gray, black, and black-barred breeds, respectively (P < 0.005). Total ultrastructural score for mammillary layer measurements was significantly higher in black-barred breed if compared with black, brown, and gray breeds. Gray, brown, and black Saudi native breeds had an outstanding eggshell ultrastructure and, in turn, stiffer and stronger eggshell comparable with black-barred counterpart under high ambient temperatures. At the national level, for cross-breeding and selection programs aimed at producing good quality table and hatching eggs the use of gray, brown, and black breeds can be recommended due to excellent ultrastructural properties of their eggshell. |

(Prague), 2018, 45(2):64-68 | DOI: 10.17221/97/2017-HORTSCI This 12-year study was conducted to evaluate the performance of new plum cultivars from the Czech Republic. A new cultivar, 'Stáňa', was the most productive, followed by 'Kamir' and the standard cultivar 'Stanley'. The new plum cultivar 'Stáňa' also had the highest mean yield per cubic meter of tree canopy. Next in order of production efficiency were 'Stanley', 'Amátka', 'Kamir' and 'Čačanska lepotica'. According to canopy volume, the most vigorous cultivar was 'Kamir' followed by 'Samera' and 'Stáňa'. The least vigorous was 'Dwarf', having a canopy volume distinctly smaller than 'Amátka', which was next in the order. The shape of tree canopies ranged from 'Dwarf', which had the most upright canopy, to 'Simona' with a more distinctly overhanging canopy at the opposite extreme. The highest percentages of fruiting on first and second year wood were observed on trees of 'Simona' and 'Čačanska lepotica'. |
Urocystitis, pyelonephritis, renal papillary necrosis and chronic tubulointerstitial disease causing chronic renal insufficiency in a Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica): a case reportCase ReportS.W. ParkVet Med - Czech, 2018, 63(10):482-487 | DOI: 10.17221/132/2017-VETMED The present case report describes a case of chronic renal failure characterised by renal medullary fibrosis and renal papillary necrosis in a male Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica). A 12-year-old male Siberian tiger presented with depression, anorexia and weight loss. Blood urea nitrogen (> 50.4 mmol/l) and ammonia (71.7 µmol/l) were increased, suggesting chronic renal failure and uraemia. The tiger died secondary to gastric haemorrhage. At necropsy, the kidneys had yellow lesions in the medulla and renal papillae and petechiae in the cortex. The stomach had multiple mucosal ulcers and haemorrhage. Microscopically, marked renal medullary fibrosis and renal papillary necrosis were observed with tubular atrophy, degeneration, coagulative necrosis, calcification and chronic inflammatory cell infiltration. The renal cortex showed moderate interstitial inflammation. The urinary bladder exhibited epithelial desquamation and submucosal fibrosis. The tiger was diagnosed with chronic renal failure secondary to renal papillary necrosis and medullary fibrosis. |

Food Sci., 2018, 36(2):175-180 | DOI: 10.17221/165/2017-CJFS Apples are a source of sugars, acids, and various biologically active compounds, such as phenolic compounds, which are responsible for most of the antioxidant activities of the fruit. The aim of this study was to evaluate how the cold storage of apple fruits affects the nutritional composition of selected organic acid and sugar content in juice in comparison to juice from fresh fruits. Statistical differences were confirmed between the content of citric acid, malic acid, total acid, pH, sucrose, fructose and glucose in juice from fresh fruits and from juice stored for 140 days. No statistical differences were observed between juice from fresh fruit and juice from fruits stored for 140 days in the content of acetic acid, tartaric acid, total sugar and sweetness index. |

Food Sci., 2018, 36(6):487-493 | DOI: 10.17221/62/2018-CJFS The colour, chemical composition, texture parameters, hydration properties and fatty acids profile of fresh wild boar meat and meat after 2 months of freezing were compared. The research material was the M. longissimus dorsi muscle cut out of wild boar carcasses (Sus crofa). Analyses of physical and chemical properties of samples taken from 16 boars were performed. Samples were packed and frozen to -18°C and stored under such conditions for a period of two months. Freezing storage significantly increased the elasticity value and the colour of the meat as indicated by the decrease in L* and b* values. In frozen meat there slightly increased thermal drip and forced drip. The changes in the fatty acid profile under the effect of freezing were found more often in fat from muscle M. longissimus dorsi than in back fat of wild boar. In conclusion, it should be noted that freezing storage in a short time does not affect negatively the quality of frozen meat. |

The rainfall interception decreased with gravel size but increased with the thickness of the gravel mulch layer, following two exponential functions. Interception was 15.1% of the gross rainfall at 1 cm thickness, followed by 17.2, 20.9, 30.5 and 45.6 % at 3, 5, 7 and 10 cm thickness, respectively. For the equivalent gravel grain size of 3.43 mm, relative interception was 45.6%, which was about 1.1, 1.2, 1.4 and 2.3 times higher than that for the equivalent grain size of 11.01, 19.31, 32.8 and 43.72 mm, respectively. |
Stability of haematological parameters in stored blood samples of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792)Original PaperF. Fazio, V. Ferrantelli, C. Saoca, G. Giangrosso, G. PiccioneVet Med - Czech, 2017, 62(7):401-405 | DOI: 10.17221/51/2017-VETMED The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of storage time at +4 °C on haematological indicators in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792). For this purpose, 60 Italian trout were evaluated and red blood cells, white blood cells, thrombocyte count, haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration were determined. After blood collection (T0), all samples were immediately analysed using an automatic method to assess the haematological parameters and then divided into two different aliquots and stored at +4 °C. The first aliquot was refrigerated for 168 h (T1), the second one for 336 h (T2). Statistical analysis (one-way repeated-measures ANOVA) showed a significant effect of storage time (P < 0.05) on red blood cells, thrombocyte count, haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. The obtained data expand our knowledge of haematological evaluation techniques and could contribute to the development of an appropriate method for haematological analysis that is suitable for the evaluation of the health status of wild and farmed fish. |

Based on the clinical signs, and physical and radiographic examinations, including computed tomography, his condition was diagnosed as hypospadias, along with atresia ani and urethrorectal fistula. Hypospadias is a congenital malformation of the urethra that is relatively uncommon in dogs, while atresia ani is a rare congenital anomaly of the rectum and anus. An additional anatomic abnormality that can be associated with atresia ani is a fistula between the urogenital tract and rectum. After appropriate surgical procedures, the puppy recovered and defaecation via the anus was restored. |
Monoxenic rearing of Ditylenchus weischeri and D. dipsaci and microplot examination of the host suitability of yellow pea to D. weischeriOriginal PaperAbolfazl Hajihassani, Mario Tenuta, Robert H. Populations of D. weischeri from creeping thistle (Cirsium arvense L.) in Manitoba and D. dipsaci from garlic (Allium cepa L.) in Ontario were examined for their potential to grow on callused carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) disks, alfalfa (Medi- cago sativa L.) and creeping thistle callus tissues, and pure cultures of eight fungal species, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani, Verticillium dahliae, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Cladosporium cucumerinum, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Chaetomium spp. Ditylenchus weischeri and D. dipsaci could not be reared on any of the fungal isolates nor in the callus tissues of creeping thistle. In contrast to D. weischeri, D. dipsaci was successfully reared on the alfalfa callus tissue. On the callused carrot disks, with no media, an increase of 54 and 244 times the initial density of 80 nematodes was obtained for D. weischeri and D. dipsaci, respectively. Monoxenic rearing was performed using callused carrot disks to provide sufficient D. weischeri inoculum for the microplot study. The effect of D. weischeri on yellow pea varieties Agassiz and Bronco was determined in a microplot trial using initial densities of 0, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 nematodes/plant. While it had no impact on pea grain yield, D. weischeri slightly reduced plant height, aboveground biomass, and pod length at the population densities of 1600 and 3200 nematodes/plant. The final population densities at harvest were not significantly different from the initial densities indicating the pea varieties were poor hosts to D. weischeri. The results of the present study indicate that D. weischeri is unlikely to be a pest of yellow pea for weather conditions of the Canadian Prairies. |
Can late flushing trees avoid attack by moth larvae in temperate forests?Original PaperJán Kulfan, Lenka Sarvaąová, Michal Parák, Marek Dzurenko, Peter ZachPlant Protect. Sci., 2018, 54(4):272-283 | DOI: 10.17221/11/2018-PPS We investigated moth larvae (Lepidoptera) developing in temperate forests in Central Europe shortly after the tree budburst (the "brumata-viridana complex"). Larvae were collected in southern Slovakia in May 2015 and May 2016 from young and mature trees of late flushing Quercus cerris L. and early flushing Q. pubescens Willd. Although Q. cerris yielded fewer species (40 species) than Q. pubescens (47 species), the rarefied number of species and the Chao index suggested a similar number of species on mature trees of both oak species. Both the total number of moth larvae in assemblages and the abundance of dominant species (pests) were significantly lower on Q. cerris than Q. pubescens. The results suggest the release of Q. cerris with delayed budburst from heavy infestations by folivorous moth larvae. Knowledge obtained can be applied in silvicultural and horticultural practices aimed to protect and maintain forest, fruit, and ornamental trees. |
Biosolids affect the growth, nitrogen accumulation and nitrogen leaching of barleyOriginal PaperIduna ARDUINI, Roberto CARDELLI, Silvia PAMPANAPlant Soil Environ., 2018, 64(3):95-101 | DOI: 10.17221/745/2017-PSE Biosolids are organic fertilisers derived from treated and stabilised sewage sludge that increase soil fertility and supply nitrogen to crops over a long period, but can also increase the risk of nitrogen (N) leaching. In this work, spring barley was grown in lysimeters filled with soil amended with biosolids, and with and without mineral N fertilisation. Biomass and the N concentration and content of shoots and roots were determined at flowering and maturity, and the N remobilization was calculated during grain filling. Drainage water was collected and analysed for N leaching. Biosolids increased soil porosity and soil nitrate, and positively affected the growth and N uptake of barley. Compared to mineral fertilisers, biosolids produced 18% higher vegetative biomass and 40% higher grain yield. During grain filling, both N uptake and N remobilization were higher with biosolids, which increased the grain N content by 32%. Nitrogen loss in leachates was 1.2% of plant uptake with mineral fertilisers and 1.7% with biosolids. Thus, soil fertilisation with biosolids greatly benefits spring barley, only slightly increasing N leaching. |
Surgical treatment of a mandibular symphyseal fracture in a calf using a continuous wire-loop technique: a case reportCase ReportR. Yaygingul, N. Kilic, B. A 1.5-month-old male Holstein weighing 65 kg was presented to the Surgery Clinic, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Adnan Menderes University with a history of salivation and anorexia for three days. After clinical and radiographic assessments, a mandibular symphyseal fracture was determined. Stabilisation of the fracture region was achieved using cerclage wire with a continuous wire-loop technique under general anaesthesia. The cerclage wire was removed five weeks post-surgery. The calf was clinically healthy. |

Food Sci., 2015, 33(5):416-423 | DOI: 10.17221/578/2014-CJFS The prooxidant capacity of rapeseed, sunflower, soybean, and olive oil was determined before and after heating at a temperature of 180°C for 2, 4, and 6 hours. It was quantified as losses of α-tocopherol caused by the studied oils during 24-h incubation of their acetone-methanol solutions with addition of α-tocopherol at 30°C, whereas the decrease in α-tocopherol concentration was studied as a decrease in antioxidant capacity determined by the spectrophotometric DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method. During heating of all the studied plant oils, the prooxidant capacity grew due to the formation of reactive lipid oxidation products, but, except the sunflower oil, it did not depend on the time of heating - after the initiatory increase, the prooxidant capacity typically remained approximately constant or decreased. The prooxidant capacity of the heated oils ranged from 58 mg to 360 mg α-tocopherol/kg and decreased in the order soybean oil > rapeseed oil > olive oil ≈ sunflower oil. It did not correlate with the content of polymerised triacylglycerols (except the sunflower oil) and was generally higher than the residual content of α-tocopherol. |
Influence of long-term exposure to lead on its accumulation and elimination from tissues and on selected reproductive parameters in the Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio B.) in pond environmentOriginal PaperE. Sci., 2015, 60(10):459-472 | DOI: 10.17221/8526-CJAS The bioaccumulation of lead in selected tissues of Prussian carp kept in pond condition during 12 and 24 months of exposure to different doses (8, 13, 24, and 49 mg/kg) of this metal in feed and its elimination from tissues during the following 12-month depuration period was studied. Additionally gonadosomatic index and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion, as the effect of exposure to Pb, were examined. The concentration of lead in all the studied tissues, except for the gonads, correlated positively with the metal concentration in the diet, and the maximum level was usually achieved after 3 months of the exposure. The highest levels of lead, i.e. 2.1 ± 0.14 mg/kg, were found in the posterior intestine in the 15th month of the exposure, followed by bones, scales and kidneys, in which the level of lead amounted to 1.8 ± 0.20, 1.22 ± 0.07, and 1.17 ± 0.17 mg/kg, respectively. The negative effect of chronic exposure to lead was manifested by a significantly higher spontaneous LH secretion in groups exposed to 24 and 49 mg/kg of lead and a higher LH secretion level 6 h after the stimulating secretion. After 12 months of exposure and 12 months of depuration, as well as after 24 months of exposure, the effects of lead on LH secretion were not observed. Environmental lead can be a potent endocrine disruptor, which may have an adverse impact on fish reproduction. Prussian carps become resistant to the negative effects of lead with age and their organisms cope by reaching a state of homeostasis. |
Cuttlebone used as a bone xenograft in bone healingOriginal PaperE. Dogan, Z. OkumusVet Med - Czech, 2014, 59(5):254-260 | DOI: 10.17221/7519-VETMED This study was conducted to examine the potential of cuttlebone xenograft in the healing of bone using radiography and histology for a period of 24 weeks. One hundred and five New Zealand male rabbits with radius defects in the metaphyseal region were divided into five groups treated with cuttlebone, demineralized bone matrix, bovine cancellous graft, and tricalcium phosphate. The control was no treatment. Clinical, radiological, biochemical and histological evaluations were made 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, and 24 weeks after surgery. Physiological measurements (body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate) were not affected by the treatments. The radiological score was greatest in the demineralised bone matrix and tricalcium phosphate groups (score of 8), followed by the bovine cancellous graft (score of 6), cuttlebone (score of 6), and control groups (score of 5). The histological score was greatest in the tricalcium phosphate group (score of 55), followed by the cuttlebone (score of 50), bovine cancellous graft (score of 48), demineralized bone matrix (score of 44) and control groups (score of 42). Oxidative enzyme activities were not different across the treatments. The lack of reinfection and infection responses and faster bone union highlight the potential of cuttlebone xenograft in orthopaedic surgery. |
Canine mammary anaplastic carcinoma with concurrent aorto-iliac thrombosis in a dog: a case reportCase ReportJ.H. Kim, W.J. Kim, J. Park, J.I. Shin, H.Y. YoonVet Med - Czech, 2015, 60(7):391-398 | DOI: 10.17221/8388-VETMED An 11-year-old, 6.75 kg, spayed female Maltese dog was referred for evaluation of a recurrent mammary gland tumour (MGT) after recent lumpectomies. We performed a regional mastectomy, and the mammary gland tumour was diagnosed as a mammary anaplastic carcinoma. On the 11th postoperative day, the dog presented with a one-day history of lethargy and left hind limb weakness. Increased D-dimer level and two-dimensional and Doppler ultrasonography revealed a unilateral aorto-iliac thrombus. Although prompt thrombolytic drug administration by intravenous infusion was recommended, the owner did not consent to further examination and treatment due to the side effects, and the patient died 24 h after it was diagnosed with arterial thrombosis (AT). This is the first report of a canine mammary anaplastic carcinoma with concurrent arterial thrombosis in a dog. These results suggest that cancer malignancy-induced hypercoagulability should be considered in the differential diagnosis of arterial thrombosis. |
