Influence of diets containing raw or extruded peas instead of soybean meal on meat quality characteristics in growing-finishing pigs

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of pea-based diet fed to growing and finishing pigs on performance, carcass and meat quality. Thirty pigs (Slovak White Meaty or crossbred Slovak White Meaty × Pietrain) were tested for the malignant hyperthermia (MH) syndrome using a DNA based test. Pigs were allotted to control and experimental groups (of 10 pigs each, equal for normal - NN and he-terozygotes - Nn and equal for barrows and gilts) with 2 pigs per pen. Pigs receiving the control treatment were fed soybean meal diets. In all diets fed to experimental pigs the soybean meal was replaced by 30% of raw or extruded pea-based meal balanced on an isonitrogenous and isoenergetic level. Pig performance was monitored for the entire experimental period. At the conclusion of the experiment, carcass and meat quality were measured. The results did not show any effects of dietary treatments on average daily gain (P > 0.05). The evaluation of carcass composition showed no significant differences (P > 0.05) in backfat and lean percentage values between the control and experimental pigs. Chemical composition (total water, protein, intramuscular fat) and fatty acid profile did not differ among treatments (P > 0.05). The differences in the omega-6/omega-3 ratio were significant (P > 0.05) between animals fed the control ration with soybean meal and animals receiving the pea ration. No differences were observed between control and experimental pigs in pH (45 min and 24 h), colour (24 h), drip loss (24 h) and tenderness (5 day) measured with Warner-Bratzler instrument (P > 0.05). In conclusion, peas may replace the soybean meal in diets fed to growing and finishing pigs without negative influence on pig performance, carcass composition and meat quality.

Nucleotides in broiler chicken diet: effect on breast muscles quality

The study evaluated the effects of nucleotide dietary supplementation on the physical and nutritional characteristics of the Pectoralis major muscle of male broiler chickens (n = 60 000), divided into two homogeneous groups: Control (C) and Nucleotides (N). The animals of the two groups, from the birth (24 h of age) to the slaughtering age (52 days), received the same diet, supplemented (N) or not (C) with 0.1% of a Nucleotide pool. At the slaughtering, on a sample of 130 animals per group, randomly selected, the physical and nutritional characteristics of Pectoralis major muscle were determined. The meat of the N group showed significantly higher redness and Hue values, lower shear force values, higher lipid and ash percentages and iron content. Moreover, nucleotides significantly increased monounsaturated acids and linolenic acid and decreased eicosapentanoic and docosahexanoic acids. The unsaturation degree was higher in the Nucleotides group and Atherogenic index was positively influenced by the nucleotide supplementation. Nucleotide dietary supplementation improved the physical and nutritional characteristics of the Pectoralis major muscle of broiler chickens.

Antioxidant activity of enzymatic system of two different wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars growing under salt stress

Soil salinity and semi-arid and arid climate of Pakistan is a major constraint in agriculture and predominantly in foodstuff production. It limits crop yield and use of land previously uncultivated. Wheat is moderately salt tolerant. A great variation was observed between and within the cultivars (genotypes: S-24 salt tolerant and DN-27 salt sensitive) in relationship to the choice of salinity level (control and treatments: in increment of 25 mol/m3 NaCl/day to a final level of 80 and 160 mol/m3 NaCl into the nutrient solution) that will be used for screening purpose. Relative water content (RWC), membrane stability index and the activities of some antioxidant enzymes were determined after 20 and 40 days of salt stress exposure. As a result of activity enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase increased in S-24 with the increase of salt stress, while in DN-27 all the enzymes showed constant activity at all the stress levels. Meanwhile, relative water content and membrane stability index decrease the value as well as they increases the stress levels. It can be concluded that all three antioxidant enzymes were limiting factors for these genotypes and these reasons also led to the salt sensitivity in DN-27. Different selection methods should be applied to improve different traits in different conditions in wheat.

Toxicological and biochemical effects of some insecticides on peach fly, Bactrocera zonata (Diptera: Tephritidae)

The peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata (Saunders, Diptera: Tephritidae), has been a serious pest in the last decade attacking a wide range of fruits in Egypt. The toxicity of Malathion, Diazinon, Methoxyfenozide and Lufenuron to adult males and females of B. zonata was studied under laboratory conditions. The results showed that Diazinon was the most toxic among the tested compounds followed by Malathion, Lufenuron and Methoxyfenozide. LC50 values for adult males and females were 0.20 ppm, 0.09 ppm and 0.02 ppm (for males), 0.91 ppm, 0.14 ppm and 0,01 ppm (for females), respectively. The results showed that the level of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) of treated adult males and females in 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h post treatment increased compared to untreated adults. The highest activities of GOT in treated adult males in 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h were 92.11µM, 101.99µM and 112.21µM pyruvate released × 103/min/g FW (fresh weight), respectively, for Methoxyfenozide LC10, and in treated adult females after 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h they were 84.24µM, 94.33µM, and 111.12µM pyruvate released × 103/min/g FW, respectively, for Diazinon LC25. The activities of acetylcholine esterase of treated adults decreased compared to untreated adults. The highest activities of acid phosphatase in adult males after 24 h and 48 h were 249.43 µg and 270.52 µg AchI hydrolysed/min/g FW, respectively, for Methoxyfenozide LC25. The highest activities of alkaline phosphatase in adult males were 139.04 µg, 175.67 µg, and 199.29 µg phenol × 103/min/g FW for Malathion LC10 and in adult females they were 123.31 µg, 162.10 µg and 199.59 µg phenol.103/min/g FW, respectively, for Lufenuron LC25 in 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h post treatment.

Effect of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) treatment with brassinosteroids on the content of cadmium and lead in plant aerial biomass and grain

Spring wheat var. Vánek was cultivated in pots in a soil naturally contaminated with heavy metals. Experimental plants were treated with three different types of brassinosteroids (BRs; 24-epibrassinolide, 24-epicastasterone and 4154) during two different growth stages 29-31 DC (off shooting) and 59-60 DC (beginning of anthesis). Content of heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn) was determined using AAS method in the plant growth stages 47-49 DC (visible awns), 73-75 DC (30-50% of final grain size) and 90-92 DC (full ripeness). At the stages 47-49 DC and 73-75 DC, the content of the heavy metals was determined in the biomass of whole plants, while at the stage 90-92 DC it was determined separately in straw and grains. After the treatment of plants with BRs a decrease in heavy metals content was observed in the growth stage 73-75 DC (i.e. during the period when the plants are harvested for ensilage purposes. Likewise, a decrease of lead content in the grains by 70-74% in the plants treated at both stages 29-31 DC and 59-60 DC and by 48-70% in the plants of the third group (plants treated at stage 59-60 DC) was determined as compared with the untreated plants.

Antibacterial potential of lactobacilli isolated from a lamb

The antimicrobial properties of three potential probiotic strains of lactobacilli isolated from a lamb (Lactobacillus murinus C, Lactobacillus mucosae D and Lactobacillus reuteri E) were studied using the streak line method and the agar well diffusion assay. The probiotic lactobacilli strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 53103, Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730, Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55845 and Lactobacillus plantarum DSM 9843 were used for comparison. Using the streak line method the inhibitory activity of lactobacilli products towards ten Gram-positive and Gram-negative potential pathogenic bacteria under different cultivation conditions (anaeorobic or microaerobic preincubation of lactobacilli for 24 h or 48 h) was tested. The strongest inhibitory activity was demonstrated by the Lactobacillus reuteri E strain. The most sensitive strains to the antimicrobial activity of lactobacilli were Yersinia enterocolitica clinical isolate (19.9 ± 6.8 mm) and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 51774 (17.7 ± 6.0 mm) after microaerobic and anaerobic preincubation, respectively. Generally, microaerobic conditions and longer preincubation of lactobacilli resulted in stronger inhibition of target bacteria. The inhibitory activity of lactobacilli towards selected lactobacilli strains was also tested. Only low inhibition of growth was observed. In the agar well diffusion assay the inhibitory effect of natural and modified lactobacilli culture cell-free supernatants, obtained from MRS broth cultures, on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 growth was determined. Supernatants were modified by heat (10 min/60 °C; 60 min/100 °C) and protease treatment and neutralization of pH. Neutralization elicited the most significant impact on the activity of supernatants and resulted in total loss of activity. After all other modifications supernatants retained some residual activity. The highest inhibitory activity was observed for the cell-free supernatant produced by Lactobacillus mucosae D.

Inhibition of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity by cadmium in excised etiolated maize leaf segments during greening

Supply of 0.1-0.5 mmol CdCl2 inhibited δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (EC 4.2.1.24, ALAD) activity and total chlorophylls in excised etiolated segments of maize leaves during greening. Due to cadmium supply δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) content was reduced significantly at 0.5 mmol Cd only. Also the Cd treatment decreased the protein content and accumulated significantly the Cd in the tissue. Significant correlation between Cd accumulation in the leaves and various parameters measured is observed, with the R-squared values being 0.727 with ALAD activity, 0.885 with ALA content, 0.902 with total chlorophylls and 1.00 with proteins. The % inhibition of ALAD activity by Cd was decreased in the presence of nitrogenous compounds, glutamine and NH4NO3 and the observed inhibition was 25% and 16%, respectively. More substantial reduction in % inhibition of enzyme activity by Cd was observed during treatment with glutathione, a ubiquitous thiol and levulinic acid, a competitive inhibitor of ALAD, with the inhibition being only 2% and 4%, respectively. Supply of some essential metal ions, such as Mg, Zn, and Mn, also reduced the % inhibition of enzyme activity by Cd. Inclusion of varying concentrations of ALA during assay also affected the % inhibition of enzyme activity by Cd showing an increased inhibition from 17% to 53% with increasing ALA concentration. It is suggested that Cd inhibits ALAD activity by affecting the ALA binding to the enzyme and/or disrupting thiol interaction.

Effects of selenomethionine and sodium selenite supplementation on meat quality, selenium distribution and antioxidant status in broilers

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of selenomethionine (Se-Met) and sodium selenite (SS) supplementation on meat quality, selenium (Se) distribution, and antioxidant status in broilers. A total of 360 seven-days-old Ross 308 broilers of an average body weight 162 ± 0.59 g were randomly allotted to three treatments, each of which included three replications of 40 birds. The treatments included a control diet containing 0.04 mg Se/kg and other two diets that contained 0.15 mg Se/kg supplemented by SS or Se-Met. The experiment lasted for 42 days. Selenium supplementation improved (P < 0.05) the Hunter a value of breast muscle in 8 and 16 h and decreased (P < 0.05) the drip loss of breast muscle in 24 and 48 h. Both Se sources and exposed time significantly influenced (P < 0.01) the drip loss of breast muscle. Selenium and glutathione concentrations in serum and in the studied organs were significantly higher (P < 0.05) after dietary Se supplementation while the Se-Met group showed the highest value (P < 0.05). Glutathione peroxidase activity in serum and in the studied organs was also significantly elevated (P < 0.05) by dietary Se supplementation while SS increased the glutathione peroxidase activities in pancreas and breast muscle to a larger extent (P < 0.05) than did Se-Met. The addition of Se from either source caused a significant increase (P < 0.05) in superoxide dismutase activities in tissues (except for kidney) whereas the Se-Met group was more effective (P < 0.05) than the SS group in breast muscle. Selenium supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the total antioxidant capability in serum, liver, kidney and breast muscle while the Se-Met group proved to be more effective (P < 0.05) than the SS group except for kidney. The Se-supplemented diets had a lower (P < 0.05) malondialdehyde concentration in serum and in the studied organs but the effect was more pronounced (P < 0.05) when Se-Met was used except for the serum. These results indicated that Se-Met supplementation was more effective than SS supplementation for depositing Se in serum and tissues, enhancing the antioxidant status and reducing the drip loss of breast muscle.

Contribution to the knowledge of diversity of Fusarium associated with maize in Malaysia

The Fusarium species associated with maize are widely distributed in Malaysia. Eight Fusarium species were obtained in this country. A series of field samplings was conducted from 2006 to 2008, when 167 Fusarium isolates were obtained from maize plants in seven locations throughout Malaysia. The determination was based on micro- and macromorphological features (growth rates, colony features, mode of production of microconidia, macroconidia, conidiophores, and chlamydospores). F. proliferatum (29.9% isolates), F. semitectum (22.2% isolates), F. verticillioides (13.7% isolates), and F. subglutinans (12.6% isolates) were found out most frequently. F. equiseti, F. pseudograminearum, F. oxysporum, and F. solani were also isolated. This is the first report on the occurrence of F. equiseti, F. pseudograminearum, and F. subglutinans associated with maize plants in Malaysia.

Microbiological measurements for the development of a new preservation procedure for liquid egg

Since recently, the food industry has been increasingly using ready-to-process egg products as the basic materials instead of shell eggs. Subsequent to breaking shell eggs and completing pasteurisation, they are put on the market as liquid egg products or in powdered form as dried eggs. Consumers prefer liquid eggs which better preserve the advantageous properties of natural eggs, however, their shelf life is short with quick spoilage. We have examined, how long heat treatment is needed at temperatures below pasteurisation to influence the microbiological status of liquid egg products and in this way also their shelf life. A significant difference was found between the microorganism reducing effects of the commonly used pasteurisation process and that of keeping liquid eggs at 55°C for 24 hours. While pasteurisation can only "considerably" reduce the viable cell count in liquid egg products, keeping the product at 55°C for 24 h would very probably result in no or very low viable cell count.

Salt resistance of tomato species grown in sand culture

In this study, Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, chlorophyll and proline levels and the rate of lipid peroxidation level in terms of malondialdehyde (MDA), were investigated in tissues of 15 different tomato cultivars in salt tolerance. As a material, 15 different tomato genotypes were used during a 28-day period and 150 mmol NaCl was applied in sand culture. While one of tomato genotypes was a wild type belonging to Lycopersicum peruvianum, the others were local genotypes belonging to Lycopersicum esculentum L. Better NaCl-stress tolerance in salt-tolerant cultivars as compared to salt-sensitive cultivars observed during the present investigation might be due to restriction of Na+ accumulation and ability to maintain high K+/Na+ ratio in tissue. The chlorophyll level decreased more in salt-sensitive than in salt-resistant cultivars, whereas proline level increased more in salt-sensitive than in salt-resistant cultivars. The exposure to NaCl induced a significant increase in MDA level in both salt-resistant and salt-sensitive cultivars; yet, MDA level was higher in salt-sensitive cultivars. As a result, exclusion or inclusion of Na+, Cl-, K+ and Ca2+ MDA levels, chlorophyll and proline levels may play a key protective role against stress and these features can be used as identifiers for tolerance to salt.

Differentiation of Lactobacillus species by ARDRAOriginal Paper

The Lactobacillus species by 16S Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis (16S-ARDRA) was identified. Lactobacilli are bacteria often found in foodstuffs of both animal and vegetable origins. On one hand, they play an important role in the food spoilage and, on the other hand, they are used as starter cultures in food fermentation processes. The species-specific identification by traditional biochemical methods is time consuming and not always fully effective. Therefore, more efficient techniques are searched for. We focused on rapid identification of Lactobacillus isolates from different habitats. Forty-nine collection strains and isolates belonging to the genus Lactobacillus were discriminated. ARDRA was carried out with two restriction endonucleases. For the comparison of similarity, the Jaccard coefficient and clustering by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA) were used. The percentages of similarity between profiles varied from 22% to 100% (AluI) and from 27% to 100% (MspI). This method proved applicable to the differentiation of 10 species.

Molecular detection of antimicrobial resistance genes in E. coli isolated from slaughtered commercial chickens in Iran

This study was carried out to detect the distribution of antibiotic-resistant genes in Escherichia coli isolates from slaughtered commercial chickens in Iran by PCR. The investigated genes included aadA1, tet(A), tet(B), dfrA1, qnrA, aac(3)-IV, sul1, blaSHV, blaCMY, ere(A), catA1 and cmlA. According to biochemical experiments, 57 isolates from 360 chicken meat samples were recognized as E. coli. The distribution of antibiotic-resistance genes in the E. coli isolates included tet(A) and tet(B) (52.63%), dfrA1, qnrA, catA1 and cmlA (36.84%) and sul1 and ere(A) (47.36%), respectively. Nine strains (15.78%) were resistant to a single antimicrobial agent and 11 strains (19.29%) showed resistance to two antimicrobial agents. Multi-resistance which was defined as resistance to three or more tested agents was found in 64.91% of E. coli strains. The results indicate that all isolates harbour one or more of antibiotic resistance genes and that the PCR technique is a fast, practical and appropriate method for determining the presence of antibiotic-resistance genes.

Evaluation of nitrogen availability indices and their relationship with plant response on acidic soils of India

Plant's nitrogen (N) requirement that is not fulfilled by available N in soil has to be supplied externally through chemical fertilizers. A reliable estimate of soil N-supplying capacity (NSC) is therefore essential for efficient fertilizer use. In this study involving a pot experiment with twenty acidic soils varying widely in properties, we evaluated six chemical indices of soil N-availability viz. organic carbon (Corg), total N (Ntot), acid and alkaline-KMnO4 extractable-N, hot KCl extractable-N (KCl-N) and phosphate-borate buffer extractable-N (PBB-N), based on their strength of correlation with available-N values obtained through aerobic incubation (AI-N) and anaerobic incubation (ANI-N), and also with the dry matter yield (DMY), N percentage and plant (maize) N uptake (PNU). In general, the soils showed large variability in NSC as indicated by variability in PNU which ranged from 598 to 1026 mg/pot. Correlations of the N-availability indices with AI-N and ANI-N decreased in the order: PBB-N (r = 0.784** and 0.901**) > KCl-N (r = 0.773** and 0.743**) > acid KMnO4-N (r = 0.575** and 0.651**) ≥ Corg (r = 0.591** and 0.531**) ≥ alkaline KMnO4-N (r = 0.394** and 0.548**) > Ntot (r = 0.297** and 0.273*). Of all the indices evaluated, PBB-N showed the best correlations with plant parameters as well (r = 0.790** and 0.793** for DMY and PNU, respectively). Based on the highest correlations of PBB-N with biological indices as well as plant responses, we propose PBB-N as an appropriate index of N-availability in the acidic soils of India and other regions with similar soils.

Accumulation of copper and zinc in soil and plant within ten-year application of different pig manure ratesOriginal Paper

Fertilization of crops with pig manure is a common practice throughout the world. Nevertheless, due to the relatively high copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) contents in pig manure, continuous application of pig manure could have negative effects on soil and plant. The study aimed at the impacts of long-term applying different pig manure rates (equivalently 0, 100, 250 and 500 kg total N/ha/year from 2002 to 2008 and 0, 10, 25 and 50 t fresh weight/ha/year from 2009 to 2011, respectively) on Cu and Zn accumulation in soil and plant. During the 10 years of the experiment, a total of 2.04 to 10.20 kg/ha/year for Cu, 3.15 to 15.73 kg/ha/year for Zn were applied to the soil. Results from this study showed that long-term pig manure application resulted in serious accumulation of Cu and Zn in soil, total Cu and Zn concentrations increased by 204% and 107% at high application rates, respectively. Although topsoil Cu and Zn concentrations were below concentrations considered phytotoxic to crops, according to current Chinese legislation, it would take only less time than 16 and 27 years of high application rates to reach the allowable limits. Our result also suggested that Cu and Zn leaching occurred in the tested soil. The Cu and Zn concentrations in stalks and grains were not affected by the application of pig manure, and these values were lower than the threshold values for animal and human ingestion.

Changes of sperm quality parameters in Caspian roach (Rutilus rutilus caspicus) during spawning migrationOriginal Paper

In this study, changes of pH, ionic (Na+, K+, Ca2+,and Mg2+), biochemical (total protein, glucose, and cholesterol)compositions of seminal plasma, sperm motility traits (percentage of motile spermatozoa and sperm movement duration), and sperm production characteristics (sperm volume, spermatocrit, and sperm density) were studied in Caspian roach, Rutilus rutilus caspicus, during spawning migration. Sperm of 10 males was collected three times during the spawning migration (in February, March, and April). The results showed that sperm motility parameters (percentage of motile spermatozoa and sperm movement duration) changed significantly (P < 0.05) during the reproductive season, but sperm density, spermatocrit, and sperm volume did not show significant differences during spawning migration. Analyses performed at each sampling time (February, March, and April) showed significant differences (P < 0.05) in calcium,magnesium, potassium, and cholesterol, whereas there were no significant changes in Na+, pH, total protein, glucose, and cholesterol.

In semi-arid regions of the United States, Pyrenophora semeniperda kills seeds of the winter annual Bromus tectorum. We report on pathosystem outcomes under manipulated water potential and temperature environments commonly observed within semi-arid environments for dormant and non-dormant seeds. We propose a range of outcomes for infected seeds. During summer, seeds remain dormant and are killed across a range of water potentials. During autumn, seeds survive by rapidly germinating or are killed if radicle emergence is delayed by intermittent hydration. In winter/spring, secondarily dormant seeds can be killed by the fungus. The only likely scenarios where seeds escape death include absence of infection (autumn, spring, or following autumn, germination) or infection in autumn when seeds germinate rapidly.

Composition and sensory analysis for quality evaluation of a typical Italian cheese: influence of ripening periodOriginal Paper

Caciottina massaggiata di Amaseno, a typical dairy product of the Lazio Region prepared from buffalo milk, was analysed for moisture, fat, protein, pH, and acidity content at different storage (0, 3, 6, and 9 months after production). Cheeses were also evaluated for various sensory attributes (taste, flavour, texture, and overall acceptability) during storage. We evaluated the flavour profile and acceptability of Caciottina cheeses of varying maturity using a descriptive analysis. Descriptive sensory profiles of selected cheeses were determined using a trained panel (n = 12) and an established cheese flavour sensory language. In quantitative descriptive analysis a trained panel rated the cheeses for colour, odour, taste and texture. In the affective tests the panellists evaluated the samples for overall quality. The results proved that months of production had significant effects on the sensory quality of the cheeses.

Fruit quality attributes of blackberry grown under limited environmental conditions

Fruit quality attributes were studied for two consecutive years in seven blackberry cultivars grown in a Serbian climate and on acidic soil. Physical parameters [berry weight (BW), size and shape] and chemical parameters [soluble solids content (SSC), acidity, total phenolic (TPH) and flavonoid content (TFC) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC)] were evaluated. A high variability was found in the set of the evaluated blackberry cultivars and significant differences were found among them in all studied quality attributes. Year-by-year variations were observed for all quality traits, except berry length (L) and berry shape index (BSI). A high correlation was found among TPH and TAC. In addition, most of cultivars had good adaptation capability and respectable fruit quality attributes, and also had good potential as a commercial crop for fresh and processing markets and future breeding programs.

Standardised uptake values of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-d-glucose using PET/CT in normal catsOriginal Paper

In this study we assessed the normal physiological and dynamic thoracoabdominal distribution of 18F fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake and the standardized uptake values (SUVs) of the major parenchymal organs in five normal young adult domestic short haired cats. Dynamic PET data were acquired with a transaxial field-of-view (FOV) PET/CT scanner, Regions of interests (ROIs) were manually drawn over the left ventricular free wall, left ventricular blood pool, liver, spleen, and left and right renal cortices. The SUVs of these organs were calculated for 5-min frames over the 90 min acquisition. The uptake of 18F-FDG within the major organs, showed a tendency to gradually decline, except for the left ventricle and blood pool. The decrease in SUV was rapid after injection with a plateau occurring after 30 minutes. The uptake of 18F -FDG within the hepatic parenchyma was low compared to that in the kidney at the beginning of study. A steady decline in the hepatic parenchyma SUV was quite similar to that observed for the kidneys .The SUV of 18F-FDG within the spleen was low. Uptake of 18F-FDG within the myocardium was minimal. These SUV data from the parenchymal organs of normal cats compares favourably with those of normal humans and dogs and can be used in feline studies using PET/CT for the evaluation of various diseases. Furthermore, PET/CT can provide higher quality images over shorter examination times than conventional PET.

Water use of winter cereals under well-watered and drought-stressed conditionsOriginal Paper

A reduction in the water available to plants will lend increasing importance to the dynamics of water uptake and to the water use efficiency (WUE) of cereals. The effect of drought on the water use efficiency of winter cereals was investigated in a greenhouse experiment in the Centre for Agricultural Research. The effect of water deficiency on the water use properties was studied by measuring changes in the grain weight, thousand-kernel weight and aboveground biomass. The water use efficiency of wheat varieties generally ranged from 1.5-2.3 kg/m3 and 1.06-2.0 kg/m3 in the case of optimum and limited water supplies, respectively, while these figures were 1.4 kg/m3 and 0.8 kg/m3 for winter barley and 0.8 kg/m3 and 0.5 kg/m3 for winter oat. Investigation on the relationship between harvest index (HI) and WUE was found that the harvest index is only one indicator of drought tolerance; but the stability of HI under non-optimum environmental conditions also needs to be determined.

Mineral fertilisation as a factor determining selected sorption properties of soil against the activityof phosphatasesOriginal Paper

The paper presents the contents of phosphorus and potassium available in soil, soil sorption properties against the activity of alkaline and acid phosphatase. The fertilisation applied involved P, K, Mg, Ca and S: (P K Mg Ca S), (K Mg Ca S), (P Mg Ca S), (P K Ca S), (P K Mg S), (P K Mg Ca) as well as nitrogen fertilisation at the following rates: 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 kg N/ha. The application of high nitrogen rates with no liming applied resulted in an unfavourable increase in hydrolytic acidity and a decrease in the total bases, cation exchange capacity as well as the sorption complex saturation with bases. According to the criteria provided in PN-R-04023, the soil investigated can be classified as the 3rd class with an average available phosphorus (PE-R). The analysis of Luvisol salinity demonstrated that the unbalanced mineral fertilisation applied did not trigger any chemical degradation. Significant values of the coefficients of correlation were recorded between the activity of alkaline and acid phosphatase and the parameters investigated (hydrolytic acidity, total exchangeable, base stauration, PE-R). The calculated enzymatic index of soil pH (AlP/AcP) ranged from 0.11 to 0.72.

Growth of Norway spruce seedlings after transplanting into silty soil amended with biochar: a bioassay in a growth chamberShort Communication

Biochar (BC), the carbon-rich by-product resulting from pyrolysis of biomass, is used for bioenergy and increasingly as a soil additive for carbon sequestration and soil improvement. However, information about the effects of BC on forest productivity and reforestation success, especially on boreal and temperate forest soils, is scant. We examined the effects of two BC types (Canadian and Finnish) added in proportions up to 60 vol.% into a common alluvial silty soil on the growth of transplanted Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) seedlings in a growth chamber. We found no marked differences in seedling growth among the binary growing media mixes used. Seedling growth attributes (seedling height, terminal shoot growth, root volume) differed consistently only between the BC types in the highest proportion used. The terminal shoot growth differed overall among the two BC types. These results suggest that BC may be applied into mineral soils without detrimental chemical effects on tree plantation success. Our results provide foundation for further field research on the longer-term impacts of adding BCs to boreal forest soils.

Critical success factors influencing the transformation of the agricultural biotechnology industry in Taiwan

The study uses the fuzzy Delphi and FANP (fuzzy analysis network process) methods to integrate the views of experts from enterprises and academia regarding the future direction of the agricultural biotechnology industry in Taiwan, in order to extract the critical success factors influencing its transformation. This study compares the differences in the "cross-domain" and "non-cross-domain" critical success factors, and expects that the research results could be a decision-making reference for both the industry and the government. The research results show that the cross-domain critical factor that influence the transformation of the agricultural biotechnology industry in Taiwan are sequentially: a stable source of raw materials, control of the trend of market demand, a new production equipment, the capability in supporting upstream and downstream industries, the integration of the human resources of the upstream, midstream, and downstream industries, and the capability in marketing and promotion. The non-cross-domain critical factors are sequentially: the capacity to establish the system of product technology, the capacity to control intellectual property rights, a perfect educational system, the capacity to carry out risk management of the new product development, the competence in cultivating the capacity of technical and R&D personnel, and laws and regulations.

Effects of biocontrol agents and plant products Macrophomina phaseolina and colchicine content in Gloriosa superba

Gloriosa superba is a medicinal plant severely infested with soil-borne Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid. Under in vitro conditions a commercial formulation of Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens inhibited the mycelial growth of M. phaseolina isolates. Among the oil cake, mahua cake at 10% completely inhibited the mycelial growth of the M. phaseolina isolates. Under field conditions both the soil and foliar application of biocontrol agents is attributed to the healthy growth of G. superba crops by controlling the tuber rot disease and ultimately boosting the colchicine content.

Interactive effect of AM fungi with Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens on growth and yield of broccoliOriginal Paper

Most of the vegetable crops are known to depend upon arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AM) symbiosis for growth and development, since AM fungi provide nutrients and water in exchange for photosynthates. The influences of AM fungi (Glomus intraradices (G) and Acaulospora laevis (A)) with Trichoderma viride (T) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (P) alone and in combinations on growth, mycorrhization, chlorophyll content, nutrient uptakes, and yield of broccoli plants were studied in pot culture under glasshouse conditions. The obtained results demonstrated that the single inoculation of broccoli plants with T. viride significantly increased the above ground fresh weight, root length, chlorophyll b, head diameter, root phosphorus, and shoot nitrogen in comparison to uninoculated control plants. On the other hand, consortium of G+A+T+P significantly increased plant height, above ground dry weight, root fresh weight, chlorophyll a, head fresh weight, and root nitrogen content. Similarly, G+T showed maximum leaf area, and P alone showed maximum uptake of shoot phosphorus. Whereas when P was supplied along with T, early flowering was recorded. AM fungal colonisation was negligible and only root tips were found infected in G or A treated plants which confirms low dependency of broccoli on AM fungi.

Foetal and neonatal energy metabolism in pigs and humans: a review

The aim of this review was to elaborate a conceptual framework of the most important aspects of the main biochemical processes of synthesis and breakdown of energy substrates that human and pig foetuses and newborns can use during the transition from foetus to newborn. Under normal physiological conditions, the growth and development of the foetus depends upon nutrients such as glucose, lipids and amino acids. In addition to the maternal and foetal status, genetic factors are also reported to play a role. The main function of the placenta in all species is to promote the selective transport of nutrients and waste products between mother and foetus. This transport is facilitated by the close proximity of the maternal and foetal vascular systems in the placenta. The foetus depends on the placental supply of nutrients, which regulates energy reserves by means of glycogen storage. Also, the synthesis of foetal hepatic glycogen guarantees energy reserves during perinatal asphyxia or maternal hypoglycaemia. However, the foetus can also obtain energy from other resources, such as gluconeogenesis from the intermediary metabolism of the Krebs cycle and most amino acids. Later, when the placental glucose contribution ends during the transition to the postnatal period, the maturation of biological systems and essential metabolic adaptations for survival and growth is required. The maintenance of normoglycaemia depends on the conditions that determine nutrient status throughout life: the adequacy of glycogen stores, the maturation of the glycogenolytic and gluconeogenic pathway, and an integrated endocrine response.

The introduction of a double-channel system for the intrafollicular treatment of cattleOriginal Paper

The aim of this study was to evaluate a new double-channel system for ultrasound-guided transvaginal intrafollicular treatment in cattle. The system is equipped with separate aspiration and treatment channels facilitating the aspiration of a small part of follicular fluid followed by the immediate injection of the same amount of treatment solution. In Experiment 1 an intracystic injection was performed successfully in all cows (6/6). In Experiment 2 saline was administered to dominant follicles with an overall success rate of 87.5% (14/16). This new double-channel system represents a reliable method for intrafollicular treatment preceded by an aspiration of the necessary amount of follicular fluid without an increase in intrafollicular pressure.

The influence of land use practices on earthworm communities in saline agriculture soils of the west coast region of China's Bohai BayOriginal Paper

The effects of land use practices on soil fauna, especially earthworms, are poorly known in coastal saline agricultural soils. Here we compare earthworm communities in six types of land use practice in the coastal region of China's Bohai Bay, namely uncultivated saline soil, two orchard (pear and winter jujube) lands, man-made forests (chinese ash), vegetable land and cropped land (maize). In addition, we recorded selected physicochemical properties of the soil. Soil organic matter content and total N were significantly higher under pear orchard and vegetable land than under the other land use practices, and their lowest values were observed from uncultivated saline soil. Vegetable land and pear orchard land showed a significantly higher abundance of earthworms than the other land use practices, whereas no earthworm was found in uncultivated saline soil. The sites under individual practices supported one to three earthworm species. Aporrectodea trapezoides species was present under four types of land use practice, and the biomass of this species accounted for more than 60% of the community. Vegetable land and pear orchard land supported richer earthworm community than the other land use practices, dominated by Aporrectodea trapezoides and Drawida japonica. These preliminary results indicated that land use practices have substantial effects on the abundance and composition of earthworm communities in saline soils.
