Yield performance of two buckwheat genotypes grown as a full-season and stubble-crop

Traditional way of growing buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L.) in Slovenia is stubble-crop production, but grown as a full-season crop it yields more. Genotypes that are adapted to stubble-crop system may not necessarily be the best adapted for the full-season crop. The objective of this study was to determine yield performance of two buckwheat genotypes under stubble-crop and full-season production system. The experiments (randomised block design) were conducted in Podravje region with two common determinant buckwheat genotypes (land race population and cultivar Darja) in 1997 and 1998. Buckwheat grown as a full-season crop had a greater leaf area index, more flower clusters, more developed seeds and 42% higher yield than the stubble-crop buckwheat. Although cultivar Darja had 10% less flower clusters than the land race population, the number of flowers and the number of developed grains were higher. The 35% higher grain yield of cultivar Darja was associated with larger leaf area index than land race population (4.0 vs. 2.3). Cultivar Darja outperformed the land race population under full-season crop production, whereas the yield difference between the two varieties was not significant under the stubble-crop production. These results suggest that the best yielding buckwheat genotypes should be determined separately for stubble-crop and/or full-season production system.

The accumulation of zinc in oat grown in soils treated by incubated sewage sludge with peat and straw

The effect of addition of treated sewage sludge on the accumulation of Zn in plants was tested in pot experiment. The additions of eight months preincubated sewage sludge at temperature of 20°C under aerobic and anaerobic conditions with addition of peat and straw were tested. Two different combinations were designed: first consisted of 50% sludge + 35% peat and 15% straw, and second was made of 50% sludge + 5% peat and 45% straw (expressed as dry matter). Three different soils Chernozems, Luvisols, and Fluvisols and three sludges were tested in the experiment. Oat (cv. Pan) was planted as experimental crop. All treatments were fertilized by NPK. Green biomass of oat was harvested and analyzed. At treatments with addition of both composted sludges pH dropped down causing higher mobility of Zn in sewage sludge. Oat grown in these treatments contained higher amount of Zn compared to untreated soils. The application of anaerobically treated sludge led to increased Zn content in biomass compared to aerobically incubated one. Predominant effect on Zn accumulation in plants was determined by tested soil. The highest content was determined in plants grown on Fluvisols. The biomass yield was more affected by source of sewage sludge than by the soil type used. Treatments amended by anaerobically incubated sludge showed tendency to higher biomass production due to their higher content of nitrogen and carbon.

New technologies and improvement of nursery stock quality

This four years experimentation work was aimed at research on using various waste organic materials and especially timber bark in cultivation substrates as a substitute of peat. Sixty-four special isolated cultivation beds were established for this purpose, each of 4.8 m3 volume, in which 11 variants of substrates consisting of different proportions of different components in several replications were tested. Standard substrates Horticultural substrate B and RKS I. were used as controls. Another variant was used as a control for growing tests of plants in containers. All tested substrates were enriched with hydroabsorbent TerraCottem. In some variants reserve fertilisers with slow release of nutrients (Silvamix Forte) were applied. For cultivation testing of studied substrates four ornamental tree species (Alnus glutinosa, Fraxinus excelsior, Salix alba, Salix matsudana) were chosen. The best evaluated variants were the ones containing 50 and 75% of bark in combination with sand. The worst was the variant composed of chips and sawdust. Thanks to the use of hydroabsorbents, even the variant containing 100% of sand appeared to be very good. The tested trees had different reactions to the different types of substrates depending on their species requirements. The limiting growth factor for Alnus was the content of water in the substrate. Similarly, the content of available nutrients in the substrate was essential for Fraxinus. The hardwood cuttings of Salix not only rooted into the substrate in a few weeks, but also formed aboveground parts of the required sizes. Obtained data on growth parameters differed according to the diversity of requirements of the different studied species.

Natural loss of trees, recruitment and increment in stands of primeval character in selected areas of the Bieszczady Mountains National Park (South-Eastern Poland)Original Paper

In three investigated stands the highest increment (8.8 m3/ha per year, i.e. 1.5% of the actual stand volume, measured at the end of the control period) was reached by Jawornik I stand in the initial period of the growing up stage, and Tworylczyk stand in the advanced growing up stage (7.4 m3/ha per year, i.e. 1.2% of the actual stand volume). Jawornik II stand, in the optimum stage, the aging phase, had the lowest increment (3.9 m3/ha per year, i.e. 0.7% of the actual stand volume). The process of a natural volume loss was the most intensive in Tworylczyk stand (7.6 m3/ha per year), a little less intensive in Jawornik II stand (7.1 m3/ha per year), and the least intensive in Jawornik I stand (5.8 m3/ ha per year). The analysis of tree loss, recruitment, and increment, and the relations between these processes, can form the basis for a conclusion that stable stands developed in the Carpathian primeval beech forests in the years 1988-1998. Such steady processes can be used for the development of a stable, multifunctional model of the forest managed by the selection system, or the Swiss irregular shelterwood system in the Carpathian beech stands of a similar structure.

Natural, production and economic conditions individual farms and enterprises of restructuring in the Slovak Republic

In the framework of Slovakia preparation for entering the European Union, there was done a Phare-ACE survey in years 1999-2000. The name of this survey was "Micro-economic analysis of farming households restructuring in pre-accession period to the EU". This survey was done in two regions of Slovakia, characterized by different natural conditions, production and economic conditions. This project was aiming not only at private farmers but also at other legal entities producing agricultural products. The first monitored group consisted of 412 private farmers, farming in average 43.2 ha of agricultural land. The second group consisted of 150 businesses, having 1,866 ha of agricultural land in average.

The analysis of financial situation of agricultural enterprises in productive and marginal conditions with the use of non-financial indicators

The paper is focused on the evaluation of the development of financial situation of agricultural co-operatives in the CzechRepublic in 1997-2000 operating in both productive and marginal regions. The comparison of financial situation in these two groups of agricultural firms comes from the classification of firms according to productive regions. Presented results cover firms from the sample of agricultural firms observed in the RIAE Praha. Development tendencies of agricultural co-operatives in these two regions are analysed by means of chosen debt, liquidity, activity and profitability indicators. Non-financial indicators enlarging the above mentioned characteristics of firms' financial situation are suggested and analysed in the last part of this paper.

Citrus flatid planthopper - Metcalfa pruinosa (Hemiptera: Flatidae), a new pest of ornamental horticulture in the Czech Republic

In late August of 2001 a population of Metcalfa pruinosa (Say, 1830) consisting of several dozens of adults and larvae was observed in a nursery of ornamentals at Brno-Bystrc. The species occurred mostly on young twigs of cultivars of Thuja occidentalis L., Juniperus communis L. and Sorbus aucuparia L. but also Lilium spp. and singly on other various wood and herbal ornamental plants. The damage was rather of an aesthetic kind: young twigs were covered by 5-10 cm long spots of waxy fluff produced by the larvae. The pest is native to North America and was introduced in the late 1970's to Italy, from where it spread to southern France, Slovenia and southern Austria. The Brno population might have been imported, in the egg stage, on ornamental shrubs from Italy. The polyphagous pest is very common in Southern Europe, causing damage especially on fruit trees by the secretion of honeydew that, being colonised by Capnodiaceae moulds, inhibits the transpiration. The species could stay permanently in theCzechRepublic or could be repeatedly imported again.

Influence of ozone on properties of jams

The influence of ozone on some properties of fruit jams was studied. Ozone did not influence the pH value, the contents of reducing sugars and organic acids, or the sensoric properties of the fruit jams tested. It may be used as a source of sterile air over the jam surfaces in yoghurt production.

Side effect of iodosulfuron-methyl/Na + mefenpyr-diethyl and isoproturon on micromycetes on winter wheat

Side effect of two herbicides (iodosulfuron-methyl/Na + mefenpyr-diethyl = Husar and isoproturon = Tolkan) on micromycetes on winter wheat was study. Herbicide treatment reduced the whole number of fungi and number of genera in phyllosphere. It reduced number of the rhizosphere fungal genera, too. Population of Chrysosporium sp. markedly increased after Husar application, whereas population of Trichoderma harzianum was markedly reduced. Tested herbicides inhibited the development of Fusarium avenaceum on wheat leaves. Iodosulfuron-methyl/Na + mefenpyr-diethyl significantly reduced the growth of F. avenaceum in vitro.

Characterisation of a PR-1: Luciferase transgenic line deployed to uncover novel defence-related Arabidopsis mutants by luciferase imaging

In order to identify components of the defence signalling network that may contribute to the establishment of disease resistance, we generated a novel PR-1::Luciferase transgenic line which was deployed in an imaging based screen to uncover novel defence-related mutants. Approximately, 5000 ethylmethane sulfonate (EMS) lines and 30 000 activation tagged lines were generated and screened for enhanced LUC activity via ultra low light imaging.

Changes in requirements on vernalization of winter wheat varieties in the Czech Republic in 1950-2000

The need for vernalization of winter wheat varieties cultivated in the CzechRepublic in 2000 was studied in comparison with the need for vernalization in the past decades since 1950. In 2000, many foreign varieties were cultivated in the Czech Republic, mostly West European. Varieties with a vernalization of 40-50 days and 50-60 days show the highest representation in the assortment (47.3% and 31.6%, resp.). The share of varieties with a long vernalization over 60 days is 15.8%. In around 1990, when varieties of domestic breeding were mostly grown, there were, next to the largest group with a vernalization of 40-50 days, 21.7% of varieties with a vernalization of 30-40 days and the same amount with a vernalization of 50-60 days. During the last ten years, the share of varieties with a longer vernalization has risen, not only due to foreign varieties, but also due to new domestic varieties. It is apparent from a 50-year overview that what has predominated are varieties with a vernalization of 40-50 or 40-60 days, which is a range usual for winter varieties of wheat in Middle and West Europe. After 1950, a departure from original domestic varieties appeared; those were represented by original alternative varieties (in Czech přesívky, in German Wechselweizen, in Russian dvuručki) and half-winter varieties with a shorter vernalization, strictly speaking with a vernalization fixed to a short day, and a strong photoperiodic reaction. Representation of varieties as related to their length of vernalization has changed in the course of the decades following utilization of foreign varieties; this was affected above all by varieties from Russia (the former USSR), Germany, but also Yugoslavia. Varieties from these countries were utilized also as parent components in domestic breeding.

Barley seed sensitivity to water stress at germination stage

Barley seed sensitivity to water and anoxia was tested. Standard germination, mean time of germination (MTG), germination in sand wetted by water to 100% water capacity (anoxia) or by hydrogen peroxide (wet conditions without anoxia), germination in 0.75% hydrogen peroxide and laboratory emergence (15 and 20°C) were evaluated. Barley seed responds sensitively to stress conditions during germination. Significant germination decrease was found in abundance of water. Percentage of reduction depends on the variety and on the year of seed production. Extreme values of water sensitivity are in interval 4-90%. At wetted sand by 0.75%, solution of H2O2 the germination was significantly less reduced. That means that barley seed is very sensitive to oxygen deficiency above all and is less injured by quick imbibition. Heterogeneity in seed vigour was demonstrated in laboratory emergence tests. Quick test of germination in 0.75% hydrogen peroxide deserves attention for its high correlation coefficient with the seed laboratory emergence. The results significantly demonstrate a higher sensitivity of deteriorated seed to germination in abiotic stresses conditions. Variability in speed of germination is increasing, which unfavourably extends the mean time of germination.

Rapid hydroponic screening for molybdenum tolerance in rice through morphological and biochemical analysis

High yielding varieties of rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars were tested for their tolerance to different levels of molybdenum (Mo) (0.1µM - control, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6µM) in nutrient solution at pH 6.8. Seeds of rice were germinated and grown in presence of molybdenum under controlled environmental conditions. Standard growth parameters such as root length, shoot length, root/shoot dry biomass and root/shoot tolerance index were tested as markers of molybdenum toxicity. Measurements as early as 48 hours after the germination did not yield consistent results. However, root measurement on 3rd, 6th and 9th day after root emergence showed significant differences among cultivars of rice. Rice cultivars Annapurna, Kusuma, Deepa and Vaghari developed better root system while, Paridhan-1, Pusa-2-21 and Ratna showed poor growth of the roots in presence (0.8µM) of molybdenum. The root tolerance index (RTI) and the shoot tolerance index (STI) in Annapurna, Kusuma and Deepa in rice were high indicating their tolerance to molybdenum; Paridhan-1 and Ratna, however, showed low RTI and STI. Based on the growth parameters, twenty cultivars of rice were ranked in respect of their tolerance to molybdenum: Annapurrna > Deepa > Kusuma > Vaghari > Hamsa > Vikram > Bharati > Paridhan-2 > Aswathi > Subhadra > Sankar > Sakti > Nilgiri > Rudra > Hema > Pragati > Pusa-2-21 > Ratna > Paridhan-1, respectively. Molybdenum toxicity was correlated with increased peroxidase and catalase activity in different cultivars of rice. This method can be employed for quick screening of rice cultivars for molybdenum tolerance in breeding programmes.

Fruit weight, firmness and soluble solids content during ripening of Karešova cv. sweet cherry

Changes in fruit weight, firmness and soluble solids content during the ripening period of Karešova cv. Including relationships between these characteristics were studied in 1998-2001. These years differed from each other in the amount and distribution of rainfall and in the course of temperatures. The length of ripening period fluctuated from 14 to 21 days. An increase in average fruit weight during the ripening period was 0.1 g per day. The actual increase in fruit weight was in a close correlation with the amount of rainfall in a few previous days. After heavy rainfalls, above 40 mm, fruit weight increased by nearly 1 g within in a few days. In the course of the ripening period fruit firmness decreased from about 2.5 N at the beginning of the period to about 1.5 N at its end. This decrease seems to be mainly the function of time during ripening. However, a low correlation between the amount of rainfall in the previous days and the decrease in firmness was also found. This correlation could be connected with negative regression of fruit firmness on the weight of the fruit. In the more rainy years 1998 and 1999 these decreases in firmness were more significant than in the other two years. Soluble solids content (SSC) increased from about 12% Brix at the beginning of the period to about 16% at its end. There were also found positive correlations between the weight of fruits and SSC. Taking into account contributions of all studied factors and their changes a conclusion was drawn that Karešova cv. should be harvested within one week from the beginning of its ripening period.

Reduction of timber value from damaged spruce stands after their diebackOriginal Paper

The paper presents a method for the derivation of total timber production and of increments in value units, particularly in net financial yield for spruce stands damaged by crown defoliation after their dieback. The value production was derived by means of value growth models of undamaged stands and models for the adjustment of volume and qualitative production of damaged and died stands. Changes in timber quality after tree drying and changes in the production of damaged stands compared with undamaged ones are illustrated in tables and graphs. The changes are expressed by means of the indexes of total mean increment and total current increment. They depend mainly on the degree of stand damage expressed by crown defoliation, age and yield class of stand, the age of stand when the damage started and duration of damage. The value of damaged stands after their dieback is lover minimally by 50% than before their dieback. It is caused mainly by deteriorated quality of timber from dead trees in stand.

Nutrient status of natural and healthy sissoo forest and declining plantation sissoo forest (Dalbergia sissoo, Roxb.) in NepalOriginal Paper

Sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo, Roxb.) is a nitrogen fixing leguminous tree species with natural habitat in the lowland region of Nepal called Terai up to an altitude of 1,000 m. For the last few years, this economically important tree species has been dying rapidly in the plantation forests. On the contrary, its status in the natural forest in riverine areas has been unknown yet. The paper compares the nutrient status of natural and healthy sissoo forest with declining plantation sissoo one. It is evident from this study that both stands do not differ very much with respect to their soil and plant nutrients. Therefore it was concluded that the waterlogging of soil was the main factor responsible for the decline of plantation sissoo forest.

The country population trend in the selected region of the Czech Republic

There are 80% municipalities under one thousand inhabitants in the CzechRepublic. The population trend observed in the region ofSouth Bohemia has proved a long-term and gradated depopulation of such small municipalities. While population has fallen in municipalities under one thousand inhabitants, towns and municipalities with more than one thousand inhabitants show the opposite trend. The possibility of changing this trend seems to lay in the state help for small municipalities parallel with the expected change of the situation after the EU accession because it is very probable, that many young families will be looking for the financially more convenient living in the country.

Labour implementation and efficiency of the foodstuffs wholesales

The analysis is made in the set of the selected foodstuffs wholesales in the Slovak Republic and shows their differences from the viewpoint of the size (sale place 15 m2-1 300 m2 , storage space 106 m2-6 500 m2 ), number of workers (1-81) and yearly turnover (219 thousand SKK-2 748 thousand SKK). The main part of wholesales is operated by owners (83%) and a small part (17%) is on lease. From the viewpoint of location, the wholesales are situated in the centre of town (50%) and village (27%). The rest is located in the habitations and suburbs of town. The competitive wholesales (43%) are situated in the distance from 11 to 500 m. The highest labour productivity was obtained at the wholesale with location in the suburbs of town and the distance from competitive firms is about 500-1 000 m. Suitable results were achieved in the wholesales on lease with location in the suburbs of towns. The efficiency of wholesales was affected by the main factors, including the number of workers, size of sale place and storage space which determined up to the 92% of the volume of yearly turnover.

Incidence of bovine tuberculosis in wild and domestic animals other than cattle in six Central European countries during 1990-1999

The study was undertaken in Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia laying between Baltic and Adriatic seas on 610 402 km2. Mycobacterium bovis infection was diagnosed in 70 animals belonging to 17 species other than cattle. The set of wild animals comprised 12 European bison (Bison bonasus), one red deer (Cervus elaphus), five wild boars (Sus scrofa), and one European wild goat (Capra aegagrus) bred in a game park. Further positive animals included two farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) and one bactrian camel (Camelus ferus) owned by a circus. The infection was also demonstrated in 18 domestic animals belonging to 3 species living on farms where bovine tuberculosis was diagnosed in cattle. This set included 12 domestic pigs (Sus scrofa f. domestica), two domestic sheep (Ovis ammon f. aries), and four dogs (Canis lupus f. familiaris). The set of animals bred in zoological gardens consisted of 30 animals belonging to 9 species as follows: three bison (Bison bison), four tapirs (Tapirus terrestris), one cassowary (Casuarius casuarius - isolate identified by the biological assay in guinea pigs only), eight sitatungas (Tragelaphus spekei), three elands (Taurotragus oryx), one gnu (Connochaetes taurinus), eight reticulated giraffes (Giraffa cameloparadlis reticulata), one puma (Puma concolor), and one Vietnamese pot-bellied pig (Sus bucculentus). Although, considering the population sizes, absolute numbers of the infected individuals are rather low, wild animals or such animals bred in captivity should be regarded as possible reservoirs of the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis. Tests for bovine tuberculosis are therefore necessary before transportation of all wild animals. Any lesion arousing suspicion of tuberculosis found on necropsy of wild animals must be laboratory examined for the presence of mycobacteria.

Field resistance of six cultivars of winter oilseed rape against Turnip yellow mosaic virus

The resistance of six cultivars of winter oilseed rape (SL 509, SL 507, Darmor, Solida, Jet Neuf, Silesia) against Turnip yellow mosaic virus was studied. The number of over-wintering plants and plants with symptoms of TYMV infection were monitored. All plants were tested by the double diffusion test in agar and by DAS-ELISA to prove infection. ELISA was the most sensitive method, revealing 32-76% of latent virus infections in individual cultivars. The results clearly illustrated that monitoring of plant symptoms is not sufficient to prove TYMV infection in the field and that sensitive, large scale methods like ELISA must be employed to obtain reliable data.

Evaluation of barley cultivars for resistance to leaf stripeOriginal Paper

A total of 19 Iranian native barley cultivars were in artificial infection experiments tested for resistance against isolate19 of the leaf stripe fungs, Pyrenophora graminea. The cultivar Eram was immune against isolate 19 and the cultivarsJonob, Makoy, C2, showed high resistance with less than 6% plant infected, the cultivars Zarjo, Valfajr, Reyhan, Karun,Karun × Kavir were the most susceptible cultivars.

Response of winter wheat cultivars to artificial infection with Pyrenophora tritici-repentis in field and greenhouse conditions

The response of 22 winter wheat cultivars to artificial infection with Pyrenophora tritici-repentis has been studied in the field conditions for three years and in the greenhouse conditions as well. The set of cultivars included the cultivars registered in the Czech Republic and Swiss cultivar Arina known for satisfactory resistance to different foliar and head blights. High level of field resistance to Pyrenophora tritici-repentis was detected in cultivars Arina, Vlasta, Rialto, Athlet, Trane, Siria, Vega, Alana, Samara. Not all cultivars showed similar reaction in field and greenhouse tests. Correlation between results of the field and the greenhouse tests was significant for 18 of 22 cultivars. Arina, Vlasta and Vega showed acceptable field resistance and high resistance in the greenhouse tests to Pyrenophora tritici-repentis too. The greenhouse experiments helped to differentiate between examined isolates collected from the territory of the Czech Republic. Cultivar reaction to isolates No. 98001, 98007, 98010, 00071 correlated significantly with the field results.

Gibberellin and auxin production by plant root-fungi and their biosynthesis under salinity-calcium interaction

Rhizosphere and rhizoplane of fababean (Vicia faba), melochia (Corchorus olitorius), sesame (Sesamum indicum) and soyabean (Glycine max) plants are inhabited with fungi, mostly Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Fusarium oxysporum, Penicillium corylophilum, P. cyclopium, P. funiculosum and Rhizopus stolonifer. All fungal species have the ability to produce gibberellin (GA) but F. oxysporum was found to produce both GA and indole-acetic acid (IAA). The optimum period for GA and IAA production by F. oxysporum was 10 days in the mycelium and 15 days in the filtrate at 28°C. The contents of GA and IAA were significantly increased at 0.5 and 1% NaCl after 5 days, but they were lowered at 4% (700 mM) NaCl. Cytochrome P-450 was significantly increased under salt stress at 0.5-7% NaCl. Calcium decreased NaCl stress on F. oxysporum by significant elevating GA biosynthesis at 40 mM Ca2+/700 mM Na+. GA at 10 µM and Ca2+ at 10 mM enhanced the germination of seeds under 175 mM Na+.

The effect of fluridone and flurochloridone on the incidence of albinism in pea (Pisum sativum) and on the abscission of leaves of privet (Ligustrum vulgare)

The effect of fluridone (or flurochloridone), the inhibitor of carotenoid, chlorophyll and abscisic acid synthesis, on the abscission of Ligustrum vulgare leaves was investigated. Both forms of fluridone inhibited the abscission of petioles when they were applied as a 1.0% concentration in lanolin to the leaf blade. Fluridone was capable of inhibiting abscission even when it was applied to the petiole as late as 7 hours after the blade was cut off. Fluridone applied in lanolin to the apical part of intact pea seedlings or on the cut surface after decapitation of the epicotyl caused albinism of the stipules. The degree of albinism decreased according to the concentration of applied flurodine (from the highest - 0.5% to the lowest - 0.03%) and was higher in intact than in decapitated plants. Albinism also appeared in pea seedlings grown from seeds swollen in differently concentrated solutions of flurochloridone, particularly in the basal part of the shoots. Complete albinism occurred only in plants cultivated from seeds swollen in high concentrations (0.06-0.12%). The lowest concentration (0.007%) stimulated root growth of the pea seedlings, but inhibited epicotyl growth.

Wine volatiles composition in the sensory evaluation of bouquet and flavour of two vine cultivars

Analytic measurement data acquired by an SFE/CGC analysis were compared with sensory evaluation of two wines from South Moravia. The sensory descriptive analysis showed a large variation in sensory quality from neutral character to full expression of the variety. Whereas the cluster analysis of volatiles was sufficient for differentiating both wines, the sensory observation data based on seven descriptors did not suffice either for bouquet or flavour characteristic. The descriptor citrus could be related to analytically established substances whose statistical significance was supported by a stepwise multiple analysis. The possibility of recognising vine cultivars via sensory descriptors is statistically feasible only by nutty and caramel descriptors in the case of bouquet and by big fruit for flavour.

Determination of effects of desiccation and frost stresses on the physiological quality of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) seedlings by measurement of electrolyte leakage from the root systemOriginal Paper

Two-year, bare-rooted seedlings of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) were used in this study. The seedlings were exposed to artificial desiccation and frost stress after spring lifting. After exposure to these factors, electrolyte leakage from the root system was measured. The results showed that artificial desiccation significantly affected the rate of electrolyte leakage. The effect of desiccation was confirmed by the survival of plants and height increment (100% survival and 49% height increment of control seedlings in contrast with plants after 6 hours of desiccation: 9% survival and 2% height increment). On the other hand, frost stress did not affect the rate of electrolyte leakage (the rate of REL did not correlate with the intensity of stress treatment).

External and internal entropy assessment on farms in relation to their competitiveness

Internal and external entropy are indicators of evaluation of the success of the firm management. The evaluation of the file of the chosen agricultural firms shows, that the level of internal and external entropy is not too high for the future dynamics and development. Competitiveness of the evaluated firms can be influenced especially by problematic level of their interior social situation (it means social subsystem measured with the help of the internal entropy) that is connected with a not very efficient management of the human resources.

Factor conditions of the viniculture and wine sector in the EU member states, in the Czech Republic and in the selected candidate countries

The paper is a part of the solution of the research plan of the FBE MUAF in Brno, No. GAMSM 431100007, and it is focused on the analysis of factors influencing competitiveness of the wine-growing and viniculture. This paper is based on the hypothesis that the competitiveness of the viniculture and wine sector could be influenced, amongst other things, by specific national conditions as defined by "Porter's diamond". This essay deals with factor conditions like the total area of vineyards, the average per hectare yield of grapes, the total wine production and wine consumption including the foreign trade with this commodity. The comparison of the chosen national conditions is made within the EU member states and also within six candidate countries - Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic.
