Comparative study on the large-scale intensive culture of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) larvae: Evaluation of two different live exogenous food optionsOriginal PaperVáclav Kuèera, Tomá¹ Pìnka, Oleksandr Malinovskyi, Carlos Yanes-Roca, Zhaxygali B. Sci., 2024, 69(6):243-254 | DOI: 10.17221/42/2024-CJAS This study is focused on the comparison of production efficiency (growth, survival, and development) and economic evaluation of large-scale larvae culture in pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) using Artemia (Group A) compared to using rotifers and the subsequent combination of rotifers and Artemia (Group R) as a first exogenous feed following weaning and intensive culture of juveniles. Both experimental groups were stocked with the same initial density (100 pcs per litre) of larvae at 4 days post hatching (DPH). Each group was cultured in triplicate until 65 DPH. Assessed parameters included FBW (final body weight), FTL (final total length), SGR (specific growth rate), SR (survival rate), CR (cannibalism rate), SBI (swim bladder inflation rate), and TDR (total deformity rate). Production costs were confronted with total number of all produced and high-quality juveniles to determine the cost per one juvenile. Juveniles in Group A displayed more rapid growth (significantly higher FBW, FTL and SGR). On the other hand, parameters concerning quality of the fish (SBI, SR, Share of high quality juveniles and TDR) were significantly higher in Group R. Statistical difference in CR also benefits Group R. Production of bigger share of high-quality juveniles in Group R decreased overall production cost per one high-quality juvenile by 59.7%, from 0.72 EUR in Group A to 0.29 EUR in Group R. Use of established feeding protocols confirmed significant production and economic improvements in pikeperch larvae culture and production of high-quality juveniles. Even though the price of rotifer cultivation significantly exceeded the price of Artemia purchase and cultivation, the production cost of high-quality pikeperch juveniles significantly decreased. |
Comprehensive comparative study of Chiari-like malformation in veterinary and human medicineReviewJH Jung, H Park, WS Kim, HY YoonVet Med - Czech, 2024, 69(7):217-233 | DOI: 10.17221/125/2023-VETMED This review aims to enrich our understanding of Chiari-like malformation (CLM) by combining human and veterinary insights, and providing a detailed cross-species overview. CLM is a developmental abnormality characterised by caudal displacement of the hindbrain into the foramen magnum due to an entire brain parenchymal shift caused by insufficient skull volume. This malformation leads to a progressive obstruction at the craniocervical junction, which disrupts the normal cerebrospinal fluid flow, leading to secondary syringomyelia. The clinical signs of CLM and syringomyelia include phantom scratching, head tilt, head tremor, ataxia, tetraparesis, pain, muscle atrophy, and scoliosis or torticollis. Magnetic resonance imaging remains the gold standard for diagnosing CLM, since it allows the visualisation of abnormal findings such as the caudal cerebellar herniation, caudal cerebellar compression from occipital dysplasia, and attenuated cerebrospinal fluid cisternae. Although various medical and surgical interventions, including foramen magnum decompression, can provide temporary symptomatic/clinical sign relief, current literature shows a lack of sustained long-term efficacy. Therefore, additional research is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of existing treatment strategies and to compare different techniques utilised in conjunction with foramen magnum decompression. |
Molecular identification of yellow rust resistance genes in some wheat and triticale cultivars and their resistance to Puccinia striiformis f.sp. triticiOriginal PaperEmad Mahmood Al-Maaroof*, Sarkawt Hama Salih AliCzech J. Genet. Plant Breed., 2024, 60(4):223-236 | DOI: 10.17221/39/2024-CJGPB Yellow rust (YR), caused by Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici (Pst), is a global threat to wheat production. In this study the response of 46 wheat and triticale cultivars to Pst at the adult plant stage (APS) was evaluated during two successive growing seasons at Sulaimania, Iraq. Also, we used a molecular analysis to find the yellow rust resistance (Yr) genes present in the individual cultivars. The results revealed large differences in the response to Pst between the cultivars. Most of the cultivars were susceptible to YR; the mean coefficients of infection (CI) varied from 0.23 in cv. Sarah to 83.33 in Hsad. High resistance levels were found in Al-Wand, Kalar 1, Rezan, and Sarahat APS, while Al-Rashid, Charmo, Faris 1, Maaroof, Rabiea, and Iratom displayed moderate resistance. The level of Yellow rust infection was higher in 2023 than in 2022 in most tested cultivars. Molecular analysis revealed the highest number of Yr genes (Yr2, Yr5, Yr7, Yr9, Yrvav, Yr15, Yr24, Yr26, and Yr32) in the cv. Al-Wand, followed by Sulaimani 2 with eight Yr genes (Yr2, Yr5, Yr7, Yr9, Yr15, Yr24, Yr26, and Yr32). Only one Yr gene was found in Iratom and Tamuz 3. Yr2 was the most frequently identified gene, present in the majority of tested cultivars (87%), followed by Yr7 (76%) and Yr9 (74%), respectively. |

Sci., 2024, 69(5):191-199 | DOI: 10.17221/29/2024-CJAS This research investigates the high prevalence of morphological defects in the sperm of a particular rabbit breed, namely the Zemplin rabbit (ZR). We tried to uncover the possible causes and consequences of the observed abnormalities. Ejaculate samples from ten adult males were divided into two qualitative groups according to the motility parameters revealed by CASA (computer-assisted sperm analysis). Group A contained samples with total motility (TM) above 50% and progressive motility (PM) above 30%. Group B contained samples with TM and PM below these values. Viability (SYBR-14/DRAQ5TM and SYTOXTM Green/DRAQ5TM staining) and apoptosis (YO-PRO TM-1/DRAQ5 TM stainig) analyses through flow cytometry served as an additional insight into the characteristics of the qualitative groups. In both cases, we noted significant differences (P < 0.05) between groups which corresponded to motility values. Both groups showed an increased incidence of abnormal spermatozoa, and we did not observe any significant differences between them. Simultaneously, we assessed the practical implications of these sperm defects on artificial insemination (AI), and also, we did not notice any significant differences in these parameters. The use of transmission electron microscopy enhanced our understanding of the morphological defects at the ultrastructural level. In summary, the study provides an understanding of the qualitative differences in rabbit semen, highlighting variations in quality parameters. While these differences exist, they may not necessarily translate into significant variations in AI outcomes. Our study shows higher values of cytoplasmic droplets in ZR semen, but it also shows that these conditions do not necessarily mean a fundamental obstacle to fertility in the case of AI. |

Therefore, we combined gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) with nitrapyrin to address the limitations of nitrapyrin in enhancing yield. We conducted indoor incubation experiments and pot experiments in Chernozem and Calcic Kastanozem, respectively. The results demonstrated that GABA exerted an influence on the effectiveness of nitrapyrin by altering its degradation rate. In Chernozem, GABA accelerated nitrapyrin degradation, whereas, in Calcic Kastanozem, the results were the opposite. The pot experiment results showed that the combination of nitrapyrin and GABA increased rice total biomass by 5%, grain yield by 18 ± 2%, and plant nitrogen (N) uptake by 9 ± 1% compared to nitrapyrin applied alone. The increase in yield was attributed to the combined effect of nitrapyrin and GABA, which elevated root biomass and leaf area. In contrast, the effect of GABA on yield through altering the degradation rate of nitrapyrin was weaker. Therefore, the combination of nitrapyrin and GABA combined with urea increases rice yields in Chernozem and Calcic Kastanozem. The aim of this endeavour was to foster the development of a novel fertiliser product that offers both favourable agronomic outcomes and environmental benefits. |

Econ. - Czech, 2024, 70(9):436-445 | DOI: 10.17221/51/2024-AGRICECON The main research objective of this study is to present the dynamics of land productivity changes in EU agriculture in the years 2012–2020 and evaluate the influence of direct subsidies received by farmers on land productivity. The source data for 2012–2020 are secondary and come from Eurostat. The research results were prepared for the entire European Union (EU-28), and divided into ‘old’ countries (EU-15) and ‘new’ countries (EU-13). The results were developed using the method of assessing convergence (in terms of differences in land productivity in individual countries) using the coefficient of variation and the relative index of changes in individual Member States in relation to the EU average over the period under study. Results showed that between 2012 and 2020, average land productivity in the EU increased by 7%. At the same time, differences in land productivity between EU countries decreased. The correlation analysis confirmed a statistically significant relationship between land productivity and the amount of direct payments per ha of agricultural land. Additionally, results of the correlation between productivity per 1 ha and the total area of agricultural land in EU countries confirmed the law of decreasing marginal productivity of land. |

Analysing the impact of climate change on evapotranspiration in a climate-sensitive region: Example of Central Anatolia (Türkiye)Original PaperMuhammet Azlak, Levent ªaylanSoil & Water Res., 2024, 19(1):64-76 | DOI: 10.17221/107/2023-SWR Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the main components of the hydrological cycle and plays a crucial role for water resources. It is sensitive to climate change, and therefore, estimating ET under changing climatic conditions is essential in comprehending hydrological processes, particularly in agricultural water management. In this study, the impact of climate change on ET in the Central Anatolia region of Türkiye was assessed. For this purpose, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios based on two Earth System Models, HadGEM2-ES and MPI-ESM-MR, were employed for three future time periods: 2025–2049, 2050–2074, and 2075–2098. As a baseline period for comparison, the time interval spanning 1980–2000 was considered. ET values were computed by using the Penman-Monteith equation, recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization, along with five widely utilized methods. The study revealed a consistent increase in ET depending on the employed methods for the future period in response to climate change. The average of the ET amounts for the region was determined as 1089 mm for the reference period 1980–2000. As the average of the six methods utilized, amounts estimated by HadGEM RCP4.5, HadGEM RCP8.5, MPI RCP4.5, and MPI RCP8.5 models for the future period were obtained as 1 199, 1 285, 1 166, and 1 248 mm, respectively. Considering the results, it is found that the ET amount in the Central Anatolia region of Türkiye will increase by up to 11% by the end of this century under the optimistic RCP 4.5 scenario and by up to 19% under the extreme RCP 8.5 scenario. These findings regarding increased evapotranspiration play a significant role in water resource management and agricultural production planning in the region, holding crucial implications for sustainable agriculture. |

For. Sci., 2024, 70(4):185-201 | DOI: 10.17221/117/2023-JFS This paper examines changes in soil physical and chemical properties in relation to tree proximity on different slopes. Topsoil and subsoil were sampled at 12 research plots on four slope types, the soil pits being placed at the base of a tree (near tree, NT) and between the test tree and an adjacent tree (between trees, BT). We observed a significant decrease in vertical topsoil response to slope on lower, middle and upper slopes, and a decrease in fine roots (R < 2 mm) on flat ground. Overall, middle and lower slopes showed the highest similarity, and upper slopes and flat ground the least, with the greatest subsoil changes observed mainly on middle slopes and least on lower slopes. There was clear topographic dependence between subsoil water stable aggregates (WSA) and C dynamics, with BT total carbon (Ctot) higher on flat ground and lower on middle slopes; unlike topsoil, where the strongest WSA correlation was with distance from the tree. The highest N : OM (organic matter) ratios occurred on middle slopes facing north-west, and lowest on lower slopes facing north and flat ground. Our findings confirm the influence of slope type on soil characteristics, with NT soil supporting soil formation by transporting water to deeper layers, especially on slopes > 5°. These observations contribute to a better understanding of the dependence of soil properties on slope type and tree position when planning sustainable forest management. |

Whether the green transition of agriculture depends on environmental regulatory policy constraints and expected economic revenue incentives is related to the level of agricultural technology development and market development. Technology and market play a positive role in the agricultural green transition by enabling the realisation of agricultural green production and the realisation of the agricultural green market. |
Does a relation between bone histomorphometry and fractures exist? This study investigates whether the incidence and types of fractures can be related to the histomorphometric features of the radius and tibia, which experience different biomechanical stresses and exhibit varying incidences and types of fractures. Clinical observations suggest that, in adults, slightly transverse and comminuted fractures are present in the radius, while the tibia shows a higher frequency of longitudinal and spiral fractures. Microscopic observations reveal no apparent distinctive characteristics between the radius and tibia, whereas the histomorphometric data highlight differences in the osteon density, eccentricity, and diameters of the osteons and Haversian canals. To sum up, tibial osteons are more numerous and smaller than those in the radius, resulting in a 15% higher total extension of the cement line in the tibia compared to the radius. These histomorphometric differences are an evolutionary adaptation to the different biomechanical stresses that involve the thoracic and pelvic limbs. Our results could help better understand numerous clinical realities detectable through retrospective analyses and aid in evaluating a specific bone’s predisposition towards traumatic events in all mammals, including humans. |
Lessons learnt from the use of passive samplers to measure ammonia emissions in multi-plot experimentsOriginal PaperNils Carsten Thomas Ellersiek, Hans-Werner OlfsPlant Soil Environ., 2024, 70(12):760-771 | DOI: 10.17221/453/2024-PSE Chemical additives can reduce ammonia emissions from ammonium-containing fertilisers. We aimed to investigate the effect of an additive based on carboxylic acid derivatives on ammonia emissions from slurry. In a randomised multi-plot field trial, three slurry treatments with increasing amounts of the additive based on carboxylic acid derivates were tested in comparison to untreated slurry and mineral fertiliser. Ammonia emissions were measured with so-called passive samplers, a method already used in numerous studies. However, problems arose during the evaluation of the collected data, so we examined the methodology used in more detail. The results of the measurements were analysed with regard to their spatial distribution and temporal variation. The results show that the more additives were used, the less ammonia was emitted, up to an emission reduction of 48% at the highest additive application rate. However, the spatial distribution of ammonia emissions reveals a drift of ammonia and, thus, an interaction between the plots. Thus, even in unfertilised plots, ammonia emissions of up to 50% of the treatment with the highest emissions were determined. Furthermore, it was also proven that the different times at which the slurry was applied influenced the level of ammonia emissions. Due to the interaction between the plots and the temporal differences in the application of the slurry, measuring ammonia emissions with passive samplers in multi-plot field trials, as presented in this study, is not suitable to quantify differences between the ammonia emissions from different treatments. Based on these results, recommendations for the use of passive samplers to measure ammonia emissions in field trials are proposed. |

However, there are a set of practices that could increase both the availability and quality of the water resources, but which are not yet widely used. In view of the scarcity situation mainly produced by the consequences of climate change, the objective of this work is to analyse the adoption of sustainable irrigation management practices in agriculture. To this end, the aim is to identify and evaluate the variables involved in adopting sustainable practices in agriculture through the use of different qualitative research tools in successive phases (literature review, in-depth interviews, Delphi method and workshop). The results indicate that the sustainable practices to be adopted to improve water management in the study area are rainwater harvesting (RWH) and pond covering (PC). The main barriers are the costs, some farm characteristics and lack of research, while the facilitators include easy access to technology and the existence of farmer-to-farmer networks. Furthermore, the most influential stakeholders for these practices are the farmers, policymakers and researchers. Proposals for the adoption of sustainable water use practices have also been made consensually with all the involved agents. |
Improving drainage conditions of forest roads using the GIS and forest road simulatorOriginal PaperMehran Nasiri, Behnaz AskariJ. For. Sci., 2020, 66(9):361-367 | DOI: 10.17221/16/2020-JFS In this study a new method of locating culverts is presented with the composition of achieved discharge from hydrological analysis and simulated forest roads in RoadEng 3D simulator to improve drainage condition. Locating culverts was performed on a small scale (1:20 000, using GIS) and large scale (1:2 000, road geometric design simulator). The small-scale study regarding the achieved discharge from streams shows that the installation of some culverts is not necessary. The large-scale study also showed that the geometric design of forest road has a significant effect on locating culverts and its accuracy. To improve drainage conditions 6 culverts and 2 waterfronts taking into account the geometric design of forest road, hydrological conditions and appropriate intervals (155 m) have been proposed. No installation or lack of accuracy to find the best location of culverts may result in the occurrence of creep and landslide, so the cost of destruction would be several times higher than the cost of technical buildings construction. |
How to combine precious metals with corn in a risk-minimizing two-asset portfolio?Original PaperDejan ®ivkov, Petra Balaban, Boris KuzmanAgric. Econ. - Czech, 2021, 67(2):60-69 | DOI: 10.17221/411/2020-AGRICECON This paper tries to find out which precious metal futures are the best hedging tools for corn spot commodity, taking into account three different risk measures - variance (Var), value at risk (VaR), and conditional value at risk (CVaR). For computation purposes, we use an optimal dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) specification for every considered pair. Our findings indicate that portfolio with gold outperforms the other three precious metals (silver, platinum, and palladium) with respect to all three risk metrics. The reason for such findings is two-fold. First, gold has the lowest average dynamic correlation with corn (below 11%), and gold also has the lowest average risk of all precious metals. The second-best combination is corn-platinum, whereas the corn-silver pair gives the worst hedging results. This happens because silver has the highest average dynamic correlation with corn (14.5%), but more importantly, silver is the riskiest commodity, which makes this asset unsuitable for combining with corn. According to the results, the ratio between corn and gold in a two-asset portfolio should be about 27 : 73. |

Food Sci., 2021, 39(5):384-392 | DOI: 10.17221/265/2020-CJFS Although collagen is widely used (for example, in the food industry, in the pharmaceutical industry and in biomedicine), the rheological properties of the material are not well known for high concentrations (8% collagen, 90% water). Rheological properties were measured using a capillary-slit rheometer (an extrusion process), where the tested sample of collagen matter was pushed by a hydraulically driven piston through a narrow rectangular slit at very high shear rates of 50-6 000 s-1. The Herschel-Bulkley (HB) constitutive equation and a new correlation taking into account the finite gap width was used to evaluate the rheological properties (n = 0.2, K = 879 Pa sn, τ0 = 2 380 Pa). Use was made of a new yield stress measurement method evaluating τ0 'post mortem' after extrusion stops. The effects of wall slip and of air bubbles, which caused apparent compressibility of the 'silly putty' collagen material, were also studied. Corrections of the wall slip effect were implemented using sliding layer thickness δ. |

Econ. - Czech, 2021, 67(4):121-128 | DOI: 10.17221/474/2020-AGRICECON One of objectives of the Common Agricultural Policy is to ensure an appropriate living standard for agricultural households. The paper uses EU-Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) data to assess the income situation and living conditions of agricultural households. The agricultural household income does not reach the average household income in any of the EU countries. Multidimensional cluster analysis is applied to classify EU countries according to the income situation of agricultural households. The cluster analysis revealed five segments and the fact that living conditions at a satisfactory level can be achieved irrespective of the economic status of the agricultural household, although it depends on an appropriate setting of agricultural policy. The index of living conditions is constructed and used for the comparison. Based on the analysis results, the variables included in the assessment of the living standard of agricultural households should be taken into account when fulfilling the objectives of the Common Agricultural Policy, especially the part that relates to improving the living conditions of agricultural households. The current EU-SILC database is appropriate for the evaluation of the household income situation. However, it does not reflect the specifics of agricultural households, so additional measurement is needed. |

Eng., 2021, 67(4):199-207 | DOI: 10.17221/84/2020-RAE To investigate the effects of organic matter activators combined with a pig slurry on a soil's physical properties, a field experiment was carried out in a monoculture of corn (2015-2017). Three pig slurry application variants complemented with the activators in question, i.e. with PRP SOL spread directly on the soil surface (SOL), with Z'fix added to the slurry during the pig housing (ZF) and with a combination of both PRP SOL and Z'fix (ZF_SOL), were compared with just the pig slurry (C) under an equal dose of nitrogen and a uniform growing technology. According to the results, a positive effect of the penetration resistance with the pig slurry and the activators of organic matter (Z'fix and PRP SOL) was not proven. The saturated hydraulic conductivity was demonstrably better achieved with the Z'fix activator, but PRP SOL activator also provided a certain improvement. The largest change in the unit draught was observed in the ZF_SOL application (20% increase). The results seem ambiguous; however, they give a good indication of the activators' effect in practice. Nevertheless, the findings would certainly benefit from further verification. |

That not only decreases the quality of the product on the market, but it can also represent a potential health hazard for consumers. To prevent such adulteration, the method is needed that could clearly detect the presence of the low-quality poppies in the products on the market and which can also confirm the authenticity of the genetic material for growers. For that reason, length polymorphism of Simple Sequence Repeats was evaluated in the blue and non-blue poppy varieties of Czech and foreign origin. Used markers clearly distinguished 'Czech blue poppy' cultivars from blue poppies of another origin as well as from poppies of non-blue seed colour. We conclude that used markers can be applied to a commodity verification on the market to detect/exclude the presence of other genotypes. |
Present restrictions of sewage sludge application in agriculture within the European UnionReviewHana Hudcová, Jan Vymazal, Milo¹ Rozko¹nýSoil & Water Res., 2019, 14(2):104-120 | DOI: 10.17221/36/2018-SWR The use of sludge in agriculture within the European Union (EU) is currently regulated only by the limits of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) listed in Council Directive 86/278/EEC. This document is now more than 30 years old. Several European countries have introduced more stringent requirements in comparison with the directive, and have adopted limits for concentrations of other heavy metals, synthetic organic compounds and microbial contamination. The paper provides an overview of the current limits of these substances in sewage sludge and concentration limits of heavy metals in soil intended for sludge application, together with applicable laws and regulations in European Union countries. There is a need to update these regulations taking into account the current risks associated with the application of sludge to agricultural land, with the possibility of using ecotoxicological tests to assess the risks. A wide range of technologies for sewage sludge processing is used in EU countries. The predominant choice is a direct application in agriculture followed by composting. The use of sewage sludge in agriculture in 2014 and 2015 in 13 EU countries that provided data amounted to 22.6% (2014) and 22.1% (2015) of produced sludge and 23.3% (2014) and 23.1% (2015) of sludge disposed. It is also highly variable within EU countries ranging between zero (Malta, Slovenia, Slovakia) and 80% (Ireland). Over 50% of sewage sludge is used in agriculture in Bulgaria according to 2015 data. |

However, there is no universally recognized quantitative classification for patterns of consumption by alcohol doses. This is because the pattern of alcohol consumption does not only describe how much alcohol was consumed, but also takes into account a number of boundary conditions. This review deals with variabilities in the definitions of standard alcohol doses and patterns of alcohol consumption. These terms are being discussed with respect to the benefits and harms associated with alcohol consumption as well as the risks intrinsic to studies of such a complex phenomenon as the effect of alcoholic beverages on human health. |

Sci., 2021, 67(5):195-203 | DOI: 10.17221/83/2020-JFS The aim of the article is to describe the issue of determining the characteristics and parameters of raw timber natural losses due to shrinkage at long-term storage, defining the theoretical basis for creating standards, and verify its finding by means of a case study in raw timber storing. This issue is very topical in forestry practice in the Czech Republic as well as in other countries. The lower and upper limits of the standards were calculated, and the proposed mean value was grouped according to woody plants that reflected the most frequent commercial usage with respect to subsequent processing. Subsequently, experimental verification was carried out on a representative sample of 2 209.99 m3 of raw timber of Norway spruce (Picea abies /L./ H. Karst.) at selected forest administrations. Furthermore, the article addresses the related accounting and tax issues of the standards of natural losses of raw timber. Currently, no legislation mandates an entity to establish standards. |

Detection of the T1640C RYR1 mutation indicating malignant hyperthermia in dogsShort CommunicationJ Haluskova, B Holeckova, L Kokulova, M Galdikova, J Bucan, V Schwarzbacherova, S SedlakovaVet Med - Czech, 2023, 68(11):428-434 | DOI: 10.17221/46/2023-VETMED Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a clinical syndrome exhibiting elevation of expired carbon dioxide, hyperthermia, muscle rigidity, rhabdomyolysis, acidosis and hyperkalaemia, as well as cardiac dysrhythmia and renal failure. The syndrome manifests itself as a response to anaesthetic agents, such as e.g., halothane, desflurane, and succinylcholine. Depending on the animal species, MH is characterised by autosomal dominant or recessive inheritance, and so far two genes have been identified whose mutations can be linked to MH: RYR1 and CACNA1S. In different species, various mutations of the RYR1 gene have been described which may underlie MH. One of these mutations in dogs is T1640C, which results in the substitution of alanine for valine of the amino acid 547 (V547A) in the RYR1 protein. In our work, we aimed to investigate MH at the DNA level by identifying the T1640C mutation in a group of 50 dogs. For this purpose we used the PCR-RFLP technique, and in six dogs also direct sequencing of PCR products and subsequent comparison of their sequences with the RYR1 gene sequence in an online database. The results of our study show that none of the dogs analysed had any mutant allele of the RYR1 gene, indicating that none should be affected by MH. |
Seasonal dynamics and abundance of brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys (Stål) on four trap cropsOriginal PaperLuka Batistiè, Tanja Bohinc, Stanislav TrdanPlant Protect. Sci., 2023, 59(3):264-277 | DOI: 10.17221/2/2023-PPS The main purpose of the study was to examine the potential of crops, such as soybeans (Glycine max), sunflowers (Helianthus annuus), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), as trap crops for Halyomorpha halys. We monitored the abundance and seasonal dynamics of H. halys (egg clusters, larvae, and adults) on a selected number of various crops at 10-day intervals. The experiment was performed in two different regions of Slovenia (western and central) and in two different years (2021, 2022). The results varied depending on the location and the year. In the first experiment, data from the entire year showed that sorghum was the most attractive for H. halys adults (1.56 ± 0.12), followed by sunflowers (0.61 ± 0.05), soybeans (0.37 ± 0.03) and alfalfa (0.41 ± 0.21). In the second experiment, the abundance numbers of the pest were significantly lower compared to those of the first experiment [sorghum and soybeans (0.003 3 ± 0.002), sunflowers (0.000 3 ± 0.000 3)]. In both cases, the abundance numbers increased when all the crops entered the fruit development stage (BBCH 70+). Overall, the lower density of the H. halys population and the experimental design could also be some of the factors for such a low incidence of stink bugs in the central region of the country. More research will be needed to further develop effective control methods for this invasive pest. |

Influence of the excavator hydraulic system efficiency on the productivityOriginal PaperMichal Jùza, Petr HeømánekRes. Agr. The hydraulic oil flow rate is measured in hydraulic circuits for controlling the moving of the bucket of the UDS 214 excavator. From the measured values, the total power losses of the individual hydraulic circuits and their efficiencies are evaluated by calculations and measurements. Furthermore, the times of the excavator cycles during a soil excavation and loading of the transport vehicle were measured. From the measured operating cycle times of the excavator, the average value of the operating cycle time was evaluated and, from this average time, the theoretical performance and the operating performance of the given excavator in the given operational states were calculated. Then, at the end of the paper, the individual calculated power losses as well as the efficiencies of the hydraulic circuits for controlling the moves of the excavator are evaluated. According to the findings, the swing hydraulic circuit of the excavator, which has the second highest power loss of 5.926 kW and its percentage in the average tested cycle time of the excavator is 48%, seems to be a suitable hydraulic circuit for the innovation. |
Citalopram in vitro metabolism in a beagle dog: A role for CYP2D15 in the production of toxic didesmethylcitalopram?Original PaperB Rochat, E Paus, C Maitre, P BaumannVet Med - Czech, 2023, 68(4):135-144 | DOI: 10.17221/65/2022-VETMED After administration of the serotonergic antidepressant citalopram (CIT) to beagle dogs, they may experience severe convulsive attacks in relation with considerably higher plasma concentrations of the metabolite didesmethyl-CIT (DDCIT), when compared to those in humans medicated with CIT. This pilot study aimed at determining the role of cytochrome P-450 (CYP450) isozymes in the in vitro metabolism of CIT to desmethyl-CIT (DCIT), and of DCIT to DDCIT in the liver microsomes of a single beagle dog. The incubations with racemic CIT or DCIT reveal a high affinity enzyme with Km between 0.3 µM and 1.4 µM for S- and R-DCIT and S- and R-DDCIT productions, respectively. In comparison to human enzymes, the intrinsic clearance values of this high affinity enzyme are between 15 µL/(min x mg of protein) and 52 µL/(min x mg of protein), i.e. very high. In vitro experiments with inhibitors suggest that CYP2D15, which shows analogy with human CYP2D6, is by far the main CYP450 isozyme involved in the production of DCIT and DDCIT whereas CYP3A12 and CYP2C21/41 showed a weak implication. These observations partly explain why in humans, plasma concentrations of the toxic DDCIT are considerably lower than those observed in dogs, after administration of CIT. |

One of the basic indicators that is evaluated in soil science is the rate of water infiltration into the soil. The article specifically states how soil texture and soil moisture affect the rate of water infiltration. The results show that changes in water infiltration can be significant and certain trends can be traced. The rate of water infiltration into the soil is most affected by the sand fraction (soil particles 0.05–2 mm). The higher the percentage of these soil particles in the soil, the lower the changes in infiltration rate depending on the degree of saturation. The article further evaluates soil moisture in relation to texture. The results were obtained at several research locations within the period 2014–2021 in the territory of the Czech Republic. The above findings are primarily applicable to the region of Central Europe or can be used as comparative values for regions in the rest of the world. |
